A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

  9:06am
pierre:

  9:09am
still b/p:

Good morning.
I believe that Celmins picture was in a college drawing class textbook I still have at home, and it always amazed me.
  9:16am
trouble:

good morning all! lots of dumb typing required today as we need to give info to the record man, urgggg
  9:17am
pierre:

dumb typing ?
info?
record man ?
  9:20am
pierre:

Syreeta ! total love, this song (and this album) made my summer, listened to it all day long !!! :)
  9:21am
trouble:

oui pierre! every so often we have to list all the record labels and full info on all our plays so that the RIAA can try to pay some of the artists, but alas i fear it is a giant scam and not as many of the artists actually get the $ as the RIAA...
  9:24am
pierre:

i see.
  9:27am
Andrew:

Morning, Trouble! How's that Simon Reynolds book coming along? Haven't tracked it down yet, myself.
  9:27am
listener mark:

good morning trouble
good morning everyone in the modern world
my electricity came back this morning,
I don't know where it went, but so glad it is back
  9:29am
Parq:

¡Me gusta Peret!
  9:30am
Vivian:

Good morning all! Trouble, I know you have family up in RI. Everyone okay?
  9:33am
doctor b.:

What's with the bird songs? Not objecting to 'em. I'm just curious.
  9:35am
doctor b.:

Hope you guys came out of the hurricane OK. Heard you on the air while it was happening. That was reassuring.
  9:35am
pierre:

@ doctor b : birds always show up on the modern world, from time to time you would also have a french ornithologyst that would speak along.
  9:36am
Namaah:

always look forward to your show i hope that is not a photo out your window
  9:37am
hauswolf:

I love das birds
  9:44am
trouble:

yes vivian, thank you. i think NJ saw the worst of it, although lots of family without electric
  9:47am
pierre:

sorry Trouble (it has nothing to do with the tempest what so ever) but do you know Steve Waring ?
  9:50am
trouble:

pierre i don't know who steve waring is, do tell...
  9:51am
trouble:

today's artist is vija celmins, the picture is not a photo but graphite on paper
  9:54am
pierre:

I didn't know this artist, her work seems really neat.

Steve Waring is a American singer who sings folk song in French and writtent for kids. Fun stuff about farmer who wants to kill their cats, or frogs speaking together…
  9:57am
trouble:

i will look him up pierre, merci
  9:57am
Jennique:

This drawing (which is amazing) reminds me of some of Hiroshi Sugimoto's photographs of the ocean. He gave a lecture here at the museum because he photographed some of the dioramas a ways back. His photos are wonderful.
  9:58am
pierre:

i think the "fun" fact would be that being american, he is still more famous in France than in the u.s. I'm not sure that he is this famous in France though
  10:02am
Kevin:

Jennique: i thought the same thing about the image, but it's probably just the black + white + water.

  10:04am

Did Kitty or Daisy, whichever was doing the vocal, sound in a fun way a bit like Doris Day in that track? ..or is that just me?
  10:06am
pierre:

totally not just you still b/p
  10:14am
kwhitehead:

I liked Reynold's analogy between recorded music and Orange Juice. LP's=fresh squeezed, MP3's= from concentrate.
  10:14am
hauswolf:

Birds. How I love zem.
  10:14am
Andrew:

Reynolds is nothing if not an Orange Juice lover.
  10:15am
trouble:

yes kwhitehead, i agree!
  10:15am
adam:

good show today! helping me through the first half of work
  10:17am
pierre:

i'm sorry, Reynolds who ?
  10:17am
Andrew:

Love this song. Maybe I'll skip Retromania. Still haven't finished Rip It Up... Thanks for the time-saving analysis, Trouble!
  10:17am
?:

Simon Reynolds should talk to the Old Codger.
  10:22am
trouble:

pierre the author we are talking about is simon reynolds. the book is "retromania" . he is most famous for "rip it up" a post punk analysis
  10:26am
pierre:

right Trouble, funny fact (again) i just command his book.
i'm waiting for it now.
  10:26am
Jennique:

Kevin, thanks for that link! Here's my feeble attempt at capturing the sea in black and white. You can click on each image for a larger one if interested...

  11:41am

I always envision someone retreating to a woodshed to hone their jazz chops or something. but if there's wood in a woodshed, how can you practice in it? i don't know.
  11:45am
Dead Corporate Eyes:
