Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from August 30, 2011 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Listener comments!

  3:04pm
dw:

Hey welcome back BT!
  3:04pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

hej
  3:05pm
paul:

this mms bar album sounds amazing
  3:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

What section of the coach is this snack cart? I'm looking all over here and can't find it...
  3:06pm
Coach:

below my belt
  3:07pm
Carmichael:

Hi Bri, and howdy everyone.
  3:07pm
Don't Go:

@Coach: There.
  3:07pm
Coach:

too late, the whistle has been blown
  3:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

I once took a train the time I was in England--never heard these airline-style announcements. Maybe on the longer journeys, I took National Rail (Great Western) from London Paddington to Slough and back. They have scattered announcements on the DC-NY train, but not as many as that recording.
  3:09pm
bill:

remind me to stay off that flight
  3:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

Also glad to have you back Brian!
You were in Canada? Did you encounter any extreme/"metal" weather there?
  3:10pm
Carmichael:

@Matt: You never heard "Mind the gap ... Mind the gap"?
  3:13pm
Matt from Springfield:

On the Tube, sure (London Underground). But the long announcements regarding snack carts, quiet coaches and all, I didn't hear on my relatively short National Rail journey.
  3:15pm
Derek Walmsley:

These kinda announcements crop up at the beginning of most intercity journeys in the UK ie between major cities. The catering is usually outsourced to a company who, to keep costs as low as possible, try and do the buffet car thing as quickly as possible – they open as soon as you leave the station, and often close up well before the end of the journey. This sense of speed is why they typically read the buffet car announcements off a scrip, as on the MMs Bar Recordings. You can almost hear the costs being cut! This great piece is lots of those announcements edited back to back of course.
Probably more than you wanted to know, but hey.
  3:16pm
JT:

LUBRICATED GOAT!!!!
  3:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

LUBRICATED GOAT!!!!
You read my mind, Brian! Last week or so on Irwin's show I said he should get out Stu Spasm more often--this is the original article!
  3:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

@JT: Great minds, down to the exclamation points!

Also credit Brian for introducing me, through this very cut on this very program.
  3:18pm
Cheri Pi:

Hell yeahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!
  3:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Derek: Thank you very much, good sir. I was wondering about the background of those announcements.
  3:19pm
D.Lactose:

CY THOTH!!!!! Violations of consensual reality ADIYM!
  3:23pm
Cheri Pi:

Head on the Curb?
  3:24pm
JT:

Wow, not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 matching exclamation points. Weird.
  3:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

@JT: I know, and all caps, no spelling errors, no comments in between. Like I said, "great minds..."
  3:32pm
Cheri Pi:

hey, I just ordered Ongaku 70 from AQ today...Brian you are a mind reader.
  3:33pm
BT:

Yeh Cheri, some killer stuff on there...there's an 80s one too
  3:35pm
TG:

I saw that Ongaku comp listed and thought it was the recent Group Ongaku reish. Doah.
  3:39pm
hubba:

Hello Brian and folks... got about 20 minutes in between meetings... Erkin Koray, like a slingshot around the moon...
  3:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

Harpsichords!
PGB played some during a fill-in, Julie followed up, now some "Harpsicorpse"! WFMU once again leads the harpsichord revival!
  3:41pm
hubba:

speaking of sling shot, The Men rolled through with Milk Music... fuuuuudge! Milk Music was rad, total carry-away guitar, but The Men was like bad acid gone good... they destroyed all! Thanks Brian for turning me onto both!
  3:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

The Bushwick Under Under Ground Rock Party!
  3:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Dallas Mavericks forward DIRK NOWITZKI shoots a BB gun at you in an open field! But there's more!..."
  3:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

This track is killa! Oesko killa.
  3:44pm
hubba:

I've got sweat, and you don't want to know where it is coming from!
  3:45pm
BT:

killer hubba, where was the show?
  3:45pm
paul:

  3:45pm
hubba:

  3:45pm
frak:

gyyawwwdammmm..
  3:45pm
dc pat:

  3:46pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

  3:46pm
hubba:

They were totally late... "Hi, we're The Men, we're assholes..." 1,2,3 go!
  3:47pm
hubba:

  3:56pm

  3:56pm

  4:13pm
D.Lactose:

CAPN JACK!! ARRGHH!!!
  4:14pm
Carmichael:

Aren't there any relaxing, happy, lilting tunes about devotion to Satan?
  4:34pm
wilD nEIL:

Nice place to visit, hated living there, 125° F in the summer!
  4:35pm
disastrogirl:

It can be a little more pleasant to visit the desert in winter.
  4:36pm
andy-t:

The happy lilting Satan songs are even creepier.
  4:39pm
BSI:

Southern AZ was a treat as well. For psychedelic rock formations, I-10 east out of tucson to Dragoon..... wicked alien planetscape.
  4:45pm
Carmichael:

I lived in Tucson for a while. I loved it, as I don't mind the heat and I'm an athletic nut. Sabino Canyon is a great place to cool off.
  4:48pm
BSI:

Carmichael: dig... I'm native DC but spent 10 yrs in Tucson. Sabino is great. Mt.Wrightston south of town was a favorite for vertical hiking. And Patagonia to hang out with the ravens and talk sh*t about Phoenix....
  4:49pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I hear those ravens are real sons'a'bitches though if you cross them
  4:51pm
BSI:

DCE, the ravens are cool as hell. But don't turn your back on a drunk javelina.
  5:03pm
andy-t:

didn't even know there was a Sheffield Black Psychedelia scene. Getting on it!
  5:10pm
Carmichael:

I remember an Ajo Mountain ("Mount A"?) for riding our bikes up. No ravens, but those little bastard nuisance pigs were everywhere.
  5:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

Indonesian folk!--is this the 60s/70s period?
  5:13pm
jason:

"Hai Clum Dong" is familiar from the Street Music of Java comp on Original Music. I don't think it's the same recording though.
  5:13pm
BSI:

@Carmichael: well there's Sentinel Peak south of town (known cleverly as "A Mountain" due to the university "A" painted on the side) ... a popular spot for conspicuous consumption and all manner of evil at dusk.....
  5:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

Blessed be--another fan of "Trans"!
  5:21pm
Carmichael:

@BSI: That must be what I'm thinking of. Many years and peyote plants between then and now.
  5:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

@BT: This also means that you're playing a record off the Geffen label--but that's okay because what we're hearing helped to get Neil thrown off that label. The yuppies must've lost their lunch once they heard THIS album on their label!
  5:28pm
Mike East:

Enjoying the show today, Brian. Welcome back.
  5:30pm
BT:

Thanks kindly, Mike.
  5:33pm
hubba:

Is this band coming to the states?
  5:34pm
BT:

I believe so.
  5:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

  5:46pm
hubba:

safe to say i miss comets, yet a new recording... from the vaults?
  5:49pm
Martha:

Awesome show Brian - great return!
  5:49pm

  5:49pm
