  6:24am
love:

DJ JEFFM???????
  6:24am
Andrew:

ahh Fad Gadget! I found by the side of the road a cassette mix tape someone had made up with some Fad Gadget. Could have had that song on it, it's been a long time since I listened to it.

Hi Jay & T-Zero ^_^
  6:26am
T-Zero:

Hi, Andrew :)
  6:26am
Meghan:

Nope Love..... it's Meghan.....
  6:27am
Jay/ London:

Hi Andrew my sister is on her way over from kent to take me out for lunch so will miss some of the show
  6:27am
T-Zero:

@Jay. I called, no one can come until Tuesday. I'm pissed and want credit.
  6:28am
Meghan:

Awww no worries Jay.... I guess you'll have to catch the archives!
  6:31am
4NTHR4XF4X:

I know it's Meaghan cause I can read, but isn't Keili H. normally in this block? Anyhow, it's almost the same music...are you the substitute?
  6:31am
Elwyn:

I've got to do the dishes and clean the bathroom but I'll be back to the comments board later.
  6:32am
C From Thailand:

Cool show so far.
Unfortunately, much of central Thailand is also an underwater theme park!
  6:33am
Jay/ London:

@ T-zero that is not good enough sue them !!!!!
  6:33am
Meghan:

I've locked Keili in the closet and have taken over the show..... mwahahahaha
  6:35am
4NTHR4XF4X:

Oh no, not the closet with the Pigeons!
  6:35am
T-Zero:

@Jay: Heh. Once the problem is fixed I'll definitely be asking for a credit for the days the service hasn't been working correctly.
  6:35am
Jeff:

I was just thinking that the guy in horns last night was probably jeff, which is why he didn't come out later in the show.
  6:37am
Andrew:

ahhh, I thought that song was familiar...I've only heard rateyourmusics cover album of it.

It's good to hear you twice in a week ^_^
  6:40am
Jeff:

I'm dancing!
  6:41am
Meghan:

Oh god.... I can only imagine you dancing
  6:45am
fred:

Meghan, is anyone at the station planning something fun for Nigel Tufnel day?
  6:47am
T-Zero:

A bit of third-grade humor this morning for the time change
http://tinyurl.com/d82j23h
  6:47am
Meghan:

I am hoping Diane is! She would be the best person for it!
  6:48am
4NTHR4XF4X:

Liking this song better than all the others so far...
  6:50am
fred:

Diane would be a perfect fit, but she isn't on the air that day, so I'd be left out. Bryce is, and if he gets into that, it could be mind-blowing
  6:54am
Dave B:

Lookitchu all over the place
  6:55am
Meghan:

ha! morning Dave!
  6:56am
fred:

Amazing: here I am talking about 11/11/11 and Dave B appears
  6:58am
Meghan:

hmmmm, that is interesting Fred..... he must have felt it in his bones.

Dave... it's going ALL over the place today!
  6:58am
Dave B:

Heheheheh

"wha's the matter wif being sexy?"
  6:58am
Andrew:

here's a fb page for it
http://www.facebook.com/NigelTufnelDay
i'd never thought of it before, but it's funny & appropriate! 11/11/11
  7:01am
Elwyn:

@Andrew: I'm hosting a This is Spinal Tap video night at my place on 11/11/11 :-)

Dishes are done. Procrastinating before cleaning the bathroom. *shudders*
  7:02am
fred:

I live in France and it's actually a holiday (though I've heard that status comes from something else, but it's just a rumor)
  7:05am
Dave B:

MTV or VH1 appropriated it as "metal day"

Douchey
  7:05am
Richard from Venezuela:

DJ Shadow. Maestro.
  7:06am
Dave B:

November was particularly palindromic this year
  7:07am
fred:

@dave: so lame, but I'm not surprised.
  7:08am
Elwyn:

F#@k MTV and VH1.

MTV went downhill after Tabitha Soren left.
  7:08am
Richard from Venezuela:

@Elwyn I miss Daria.
  7:10am
?:

@Richard: Oh so do I! I also miss actual music on either one of those channels...
  7:10am
fred:

There's someone at work who's doing a PhD on computer modeling of tube amps. For 11/11/11 he'll be pushing his models to 11, actually going beyond what's physically possible
  7:10am
Davice:

Play some Denge Fever.
  7:11am
Dave B:

@fred - what's the French holiday?
  7:11am
4NTHR4XF4X:

Going to have to start tuning to your Thursday morning Global Edition...
  7:12am
Caryn:

I loved it a few years back when they started building amps that actually went to 11 and of course had Nigel Tufnel as the spokesperson.
  7:12am
fred:

@Richard: I think Daria was my last fave show before I gave up on TV completely
  7:13am
4NTHR4XF4X:

<----With Fred
  7:15am
Richard from Venezuela:

@fred I love cartoons like Daria and Metalocalypse. And seinen anime like Monster, Death Note and the metal theme Detroit Metal City.
  7:15am
Dave B:

@Caryn - I have a friend who has a poster from Marshall with those amps/Nigel. Good stuff

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/steve_kyle/NigelTufnel1.jpg
  7:16am
fred:

@Dave: something about the end of WWI, at least that's the official story. I heard some general wanted to sign the armistice on 11/11@11:11, which delayed it enough for more guys to get slaughtered. I believe Nigel Tufnel's awesomeness just traveled back in time to inspire him
  7:17am
Dave B:

I heard somewhere that "Liquid Television" has been released to disk
  7:17am
Andrew:

O_O that's a lot of records! Where are they all from? do people bring theirs to sell or is it all WFMUs stuff?

hehe I liked Daria too ^_^ it was on the ABC here.
  7:18am
Meghan:

I loved Liquid Television!

Andrew... that is nothing compared to what the fair looks like! Seriously... it's amazing. It's both WFMU and other's selling
  7:21am
fred:

I already had quit on TV when Daria aired here, I would go to my parents' place to watch it
  7:22am
Dave B:

I can confirm its a lot of records from WFMU. Helped load the truck out on Friday and back in on Sunday
  7:22am
Caryn:

@Dave B: I saved the ad from a music mag. So it's... somewhere in my messy apartment.
Also, in Europe, MTV went downhill when Ray Cokes left.
  7:24am
Andrew:

oh yeh, Liquid Television! I remember watching that on SBS....some thing like Dog Boy? was on it, that was cool.
  7:24am
4NTHR4XF4X:

@ Meaghan, great show so far, will be listening on the road...Daria was great, but I especially liked Stressed Out Eric, unfortunately it took off more in the U.K. and it canceled here I think only after a few episodes- was hard to keep up after that cause back then there was no youtube...
  7:26am
Meghan:

I remember watching MTV in Berlin and they played a Bauhaus video at noon.... I was in total awe.
  7:26am
Caryn:

I still have a few Daria eps on tape somewhere. But I think a few years back they released all of Daria on a DVD box set, so need to get that at some point.
  7:26am
fred:

@Caryn: looks like FVH finally got around to emailing you. Have you met him yet?
  7:29am
Caryn:

@fred: nope, been busy as heck. At work, someone accidentally threw away most of the work I had spent a week doing, so I gotta do it all again... I did notice the e-mail but haven't even had time to look at it yet :(
  7:31am
Jay/ London:

nice mix maghan soon to go to the pub now my sister is here we are all enjoying the show
  7:32am
Meghan:

Hopefully putting you in the mood to drink!
  7:33am
fred:

@Caryn: I may be wrong but I got the impression that you live in Finland, FVH is in Helsinki so I wondered whether you actually knew each other. Not that it's a small place, but FMU listeners tend to belong to small communities
  7:34am
Meghan:

Speaking of.... where is that other Fred?
  7:35am
Caryn:

@Caryn: whoah, didn't know that. I knew he lived in Europe, but did not imagine Finland. I actually don't live in Helsinki right now, but will be going there for the next 2 weekends, so will have to see about that.
  7:36am
Dave B:

and, as fate would have it, I finally fixed my turntable - unfortunately a week late for the fair...

One of these beasts: http://ps-f5.com/
  7:38am
Caryn:

I mean, @fred... sheesh, my brain has stopped working today.
  7:40am
Richard from Venezuela:

Cuarto Poder!!!!!!

Thanks Meghan. Venezuela represent.
  7:41am
Meghan:

oh I didn't know he was from Venezuela! Sweet!
  7:44am
fred:

@Caryn: mine hasn't even started yet, so we're even. I met Fred once, he's a cool guy, well worth meeting in my opinion. I thought the "von helsing" moniker gave away his location, but maybe that's because I expect double meanings
  7:50am
Elwyn:

I bet Keili has run off with cats that look like Hitler!
  7:52am
Danne D:

Booo no Keili :(
But yay Meghan's on the air :)

Hope Keili's doing okay and will be back soon.
Hi everyone!!! :D
  7:53am
Richard from Venezuela:

Hi Danne D.
  7:53am
Elwyn:

Ha ha! The last time you filled in for Keili, it may have been when I was at the airport and you played the original of this song half an hour before I had to board.
  7:54am
Meghan:

Morning Danne D!
  7:55am
Caryn:

@fred; well, the von helsing could just hint at some affection for horror movies or something. Also, since the Scandinavian countries have cities ranging from Helsingfors to Helsingborg to Helsingör, it also casts a wide net.
  7:55am
Danne D:

morning Ricardo, and Meghan and Stormtrooper Elwyn and folks I'm too tired to enumerate )
  7:57am
Dave B:

Fugazi - best served LOUD!
  7:57am
Caryn:

Yay, Danne D in the hizzouse! And where the hell did that expression suddenly pop into my head?
  7:58am
Elwyn:

Morning Danne D and Fred.
  8:00am
fred:

Hi Danne! Are you always that tired or is that just because of the early hour?
@Caryn: does "Helsing" mean something in those languages? I guess it does it it's that common, but I don't know what
  8:00am
Danne D:

yay Caryn :)
  8:02am
Dave B:

30 minutes... then the shitshow starts:
http://www.nycmarathon.org/entrantinfo/start_services.htm

My neighborhood will be besieged with "baked potato people" shortly there after
  8:05am
fred:

@dave: are you running today? I guess not, if even stormtrooper Elwyn bailed out of his bike race, I don't really expect you to fill in. Then again, it's fill-in day
  8:06am
Danne D:

@Dave B tell the marathon folks to go on ahead without me.. I'll catch up.,...
  8:07am
Dave B:

I knocked that off my bucket list back in 2000.

Finished in just under 5:30.

First thing I did when I got home? Had a smoke and a beer...
  8:10am
Caryn:

@fred: well, all the places a derived from the word "hals" which means peninsula/headland, connecting road, thin part of a stream etc. Most of the cities are on peninsulas or along a river. Some were also built along main connecting roads. So there are many versions of where each city got its' name from. But basically then helsing/hälsing/haelsinge means "someone who lives on the peninsula/by the river/by the road" and then the end of the town name is another location name (like fors is "a rapids", which they have in Helsingfors, and borg is "castle"). That concludes etymology 101 (except to say that in Icelandic, helsingi means goose, which also comes from the word hals, this time meaning "neck").
  8:14am
Nanker de Tucson:

Thanks for the Albert Collins!
  8:14am
Meghan:

No worries! Told you I was going all over the board today!
  8:15am
fred:

@Caryn: most interesting is that I've always been told that Finnish is a very peculiar language. Seems like it does share things with neighbors after all
  8:19am
Caryn:

@fred: Well, mostly certain cultural words (associated with old pagan festivals that have metamorphosed into modern festivals) and place names, which mostly come from the times when we were still part of Sweden. Helsinki is just the Finnish bastardisation of the original Swedish name for the city, Helsingfors (like in English you say Rome instead of Roma or Spain instead of Espana).
  8:21am
Dave B:

or "to-may-to" instead of "to-mah-to"

The english language is the bastardization of all bastardizations...
  8:22am
fred:

OK, that makes sense. You seem to know a lot about these things, are you a linguist?
  8:23am
Caryn:

@fred: nope, a translator. So close enough :)
  8:24am
fred:

@dave: I think english is a trader's language, very accepting of whatever works to be understood. French is a diplomat's language to me, meant to confuse.
  8:27am
Dave B:

@fred - http://chrisblattman.com/files/2011/07/facebook_like_button_big1.jpg
  8:28am
Caryn:

Stephen Fry talked about how English, like most naturally evolved languages, is like a city like London: often confusing, messy, full of small and crooked streets that are not always logical and may lead nowhere near where you thought they would. While artificial languages, like Esperanto, are like Milton Keynes: purpose built at once, clean, simple, easy to wrap your head around, all straight clear lines and streets, but ultimately without depth.
  8:28am
marc:

Is "ONE NIGHT IN BANGKOK" the song you are referring to Meghan?
  8:31am
Jefff:

I'm loving the show (although I'm guessing you knew that) but you're not being fair! For the love of the theme, please consider my request for next week!!
  8:31am
Meghan:

amazingly it is not......
  8:33am
Dave B:

The String Quartet version I shared isnt AS bad. (though the violin comping the vocal part is equally shrill!)
  8:34am
Dave B:

and BAD = GOOD in the previous statement
  8:34am
Meghan:

I felt that was too long too.... and painful. I was not happy when Jeff was playing it....
  8:35am
fred:

@Caryn: Linguist and translator close enough? Don't tell that to linguists. Or rather do, it's a button that always works. I wish I knew more about London streets, but maybe my lack of knowledge is for the best: I manage to get confused by the Paris ones, despite (or is that because of) Haussmann's efforts to make them all tidy and neat
  8:36am
marc:

ok, good.i like that song. it is a bit racy tho.
  8:36am
Dave B:

play the original at 45rpm. The voice will drive Bosco bonkers!
  8:37am
Meghan:

Oh yes... Marc the cheese of that song is good.... the other song we are referencing is the band of which we do not talk about ..... or at least I don't....
  8:38am
Caryn:

@Yeah, I know, don't say that to translators either. Even I would blow my top if someone said that to me seriously. But for the purposes of an ethymological discussion they're close enough, since neither is exactly an expert in that field, but does skirt around it a lot.
  8:38am
Dave B:

@ Jefff - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSOBa-YfXuw
  8:44am
marc:

OH, its kinda like Lord Voldemort from Harry Potter. "The Band which cannot be named."
  8:44am
Jefff:

@Dave B - how did anyone ever make that connection?!
  8:45am
Meghan:

It does have an evil like that..... very true!
  8:45am
Dave B:

maybe they were smokin what ever Denzel was!
  8:46am
Jefff:

By the way Meghan, once again R*** is the topic of conversation on the comments board... and you started it!
  8:47am
fred:

@Caryn: the whole point for me is to make fun of labels and how much we invest in those. I sometimes define my field as applied philosophy, which pisses off philosophers as much as regular geeks. I really believe that too, so the ludicrous side of it keeps me in check
  8:48am
marc:

now my curiosity is peaked,
  8:52am
glenn:

it's thursday?
  8:53am
Meghan:

ha! Yep Glenn! You slept through 5 days!
  9:00am
Nanker de Tucson:

Great show Meghan!
  9:01am
Caryn:

@fred: regularly I try to avoid lables too, but at the University of Helsinki, there is a history of linguists vs. translators (with the administration usually being all pro-linguist), so it's an especially touchy subject for anyone from there.
