Favoriting November 16, 2011: JERRY SHIRLEY interview! Plus a whole lot of Humble Pie and related music!

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Earlier this year, legendary Humble Pie drummer Jerry Shirley called in to the Evan "Funk" Davies show -- at 3am UK time! -- to share some memories of his friend and bandmate Steve Marriott on the 20th anniversary of Marriott's death. Jerry's fascinating autobiography, Best Seat In The House: Drumming In The '70s with Marriott, Frampton and Humble Pie (Rebeats/Hal Leonard), has just been released and we're happy to welcome him back to the WFMU airwaves for a more extensive interview! In addition to spending his late teens and early 20s with The Pie, one of rock & roll's first supergroups, Jerry played on Syd Barrett's solo records and did sessions with John Entwistle, B.B. King, Sammy Hagar and Badfinger's Joey Molland, among others. Jerry will be sharing stories from his remarkable career behind the kit, and EFD will be spinning plenty of Humble Pie and other related records. Don't miss this! And come out to meet Jerry (along with fellow drumming legend Carmine Appice!) at the book release party on Thursday Nov. 17 at the Cutting Room, 44 E. 32nd St in NYC.

The drumming is Already Good. Yeawoo!
  9:03pm
Bad Ronald:

Smoking opener!
  9:10pm
glenn:

i thought jerry shirley was going to be last week? i guess i didn't miss it after all.
  9:13pm
efd:

glenn, you did not! Hi everyone, thanks for tuning in! Should be interesting as I attempt to drop songs in on the fly during the interview playback -- no time to actually 'produce' it since I just recorded the interview last night.
  9:21pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Man, I think this is a first--a Ray Charles song on the EFD show! The guys in his band, particularly the drummers, always talked about how slow Ray Charles songs were--I think you could fit an entire Ramones' song in between beats here
  9:22pm
efd:

haha, I think you're correct on all counts Michael!
  9:24pm
glenn:

i think ray's an acquired taste, and i don't know if i'll ever acquire it. i can see that he's very influential though.
  9:25pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Yeah--Dino Daneli, king of the groove!!!
  9:28pm
glenn:

p.s. production's way overrated. let 'er rip, potato chip.
  9:29pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

What a great drum sound here!

Woggle, could you please email me at evan -at- wfmu.org? I'll explain.

That's funny, I was just looking up the origin of "humble pie" a couple of days ago.

  10:34pm
Melvin Marriotti:

Good job efd! More Pie please...can't get my fill.
  10:35pm
efd:

sadly that's the one thing I didn't have time to track down! I wanted to, too -- that early Hagar is tops! I do have some Montrose handy though, as kind of a consolation prize.
  10:37pm
efd:

Thanks Melvin, if indeed that is your true name... although I suspect you're playing off one of the running stories from the book?
  10:40pm
Dave B:

Hey hey!

Hope I didn't miss all the slices of Pie. Luckily there's always seconds (and thirds) in the archives!
  10:41pm
Melvin Marriotti:

Very astute efd. I didn't want to divulge I am Clem Clempson.
  10:42pm
efd:

Ha! Well you're secret's safe with me!
  10:43pm
efd:

  10:57pm
Holly in NC:

Hi Evan & all other friends!
@Julie - are you familiar with the post-Syd 'lost' soundtrack to Zabriskie Point (aka 370 Yards)? I just discovered, and like....and I am not the hugest post-Syd Floyd fan
  10:59pm
Parq:

Wow, never heard this Pie version of "Rain" -- fire-breathing!

  11:16pm
efd:

thanks Kat!
Holly, have not heard that but sounds like something I should check out!

Hi Danne!
  11:19pm
Holly in NC:

Hi Danne!
@Julie - ask me how many morose adolescent moments I spent listening to 'Wish You Were Here".... almost as much as 'Behind Blue Eyes' & 'Reign o'er Me' or (Rush alert!) Caress of Steel or....
anyway, once I was less angsty I got into Meddle.
And of course I went to that silly light show, which, um, I don't really remember!
  11:23pm
Danne D:

Hope you have a great Thanksgiving Evan :) I'm yet to know if I need to go away or not :/
  11:24pm
Danne D:

If I'm going it'll be to NC. I'm assuming Holly will have the state spruced up if need be :)
  11:26pm
Julie:

I'm sorry I missed the Floyd laser show. I like NC, well some of it. The part that's not around my brother-in-law
  11:27pm
cheri:

hiya danne,,long time no see,,how have you been?? happy holidays!
  11:28pm
cheri:

night evan,, julie & danne
  11:29pm
Danne D:

HI Cheri!. Happy Thanksgiving Cheri! G'night Cheri!
  11:30pm
Danne D:

Whoa Ira The K!

Evan bringing the big guns in!

Ira is good people as well. Got the pleasure of meeting him during the WFMU fundraising marathon.
  11:33pm
Danne D:

Going to Maxwell's Sunday to see John Wesley Harding :)
  11:36pm
Holly in NC:

Danne - Just let me know if I need to start sprucing! Earlier today I successfully fended off a pot-bellied pig with sharp teeth & vengeance on its mind (I do eat rather a lot of pig products) - so I feel up for anything ;-)
BTW - Numero's Eccentric Soul Revue is playing in Durham this Saturday! I'll miss the show, but Numero folks are going to be spinning 45s at my housemate's bar later in the evening - how cool is that? Anyone in the area should come out
  11:41pm
Holly in NC:

@Julie -
How horrible is your brother-in-law that he wrecks this fine state?
  11:42pm
Danne D:

lol thx Holly :)
  11:44pm
Julie:

He's incredibly narrow-minded
  11:45pm
G:

I know someone off the grid near the Great Dismal Swamp, and while I would never cast aspersions let me state as a factual matter that were his rather flimsy porch roof to collapse several yellow dogs would instantly meet their makers.
  11:45pm
Holly in NC:

Yeah, "Piggy" 0, Holly 1 - in fairness, Piggy was on a retractable harness
  11:48pm
Rickwaukee:

Just popped for Mr. Shirley's book plus S.Marriot bio and a couple Small Faces compilations. Maybe they'll arrive before my birthday next week. Enjoy your Wed. off and have a happy turkey (or tofurkey), EFD!
  11:48pm
Holly in NC:

I used to think anyone with a Southern accept was stupid - talk about narrow-minded!
  11:49pm
Holly in NC:

accent. accent.
  11:49pm
cheri:

evan & julie i sure hope you two stay at fmu for very long time,
  11:49pm
Julie:

@holly ewww Jerry Garcia is on the soundtrack. I have seriously considered moving there, but I don't know I worry I will deal with a lot of that.
  11:51pm
BuddieBear:

Oh yeah!
  11:55pm
Holly in NC:

Julie - give both the soundtrack & NC a chance! While I'm totally moving to coastal Rhode Island as my final permanent home, my time here in NC has - seriously- made me a better person.
  11:56pm
cheri:

ty evan & julie for making this show a funky one!!
  11:57pm
Holly in NC:

efd - THANK YOU for Bush Tetras
  11:58pm
Danne D:

:( RIP Laura Kennedy :(

Thanks for a great show Evan!

Have a good night everyone!
  11:58pm
charlesinsb:

great to hear too many creeps, thank evan for remembering laura
  12:04am
The Count of Al Dente:

We were a jaded crowd here in Mpls. We had bands like Husker Du, The Replacements, etc., that had enough material to do three sets. When various NYC bands like The Bush Tetras or, Eight-Eyed Spy would come, they'd do their twenty-minute set of six or so songs, take a break and then come back and repeat the first set. Real hip.
  11:14am
Reality Check:

@Count: Even in areas like finance, New York has been coasting for decades on its rep for being cutting edge... "coasting" meaning that the reality often doesn't fit the boosterish hype.
  11:42am
Carl:

Great show,Evan (thanks to Chris Cote for turning me on to it) and fab i'view with Jerry Shirley. Chris & I were part of Jerry's back-up band at a book reading/signing here in Boston - what a trip playing with a bona fide rock legend.Nice fella, too.
