Joe McG:

Hey, Chop Scott!
  12:16am
G:

*There* is the love!
  12:18am
G:

Donny died in 1979 by falling from the Essex House here in NYC.
  12:19am
Joe McG:

Wow, did he really? Did somebody push or was he just the victim of an accident?
  12:21am
G:

he neatly took the glass out of the window in his 15th floor room and was found on sidewalk, ruled suicide. so says wikipedia. i'd never known that, but saw his 1979 death date and wondered why...jesse jackson did the funeral
  12:21am
Holly in NC:

NOT that I'd have wanted to grow up in a ghetto, but I *am* incredibly sorry that I used to feel "Subdivisions" was a good musical representation of my (NOT) horrible life.
@G - Donny's depression & resultant suicide are a sad, sad story for real:-(
  12:23am
G:

sad alright :-( roberta flack was devastated and used some of his recorded tracks subsequently by building finished songs around them
  12:26am
Joe McG:

This is all news to me about Donnie H. What a sad story. He was so great live on that electric piana...
  12:27am
Holly in NC:

Thank you Joe & Ted Taylor for lightening the mood!
Bowery disco!

  12:33am
Joe McG:

Meghan! How are you this fine evening/morning? @Chop: That stuff is mighty delicious! You always know the good stuff, my friend!
  12:35am
Meghan:

Just left a show. Saw Dave B there and he gifted me a Rash shirt that is in the Rush font... It's awesome
  12:37am
Joe McG:

@Meghan: Wow! I know you will wear it with pride. We're going to have to get you a "Permanent Waves" T-shirt!
  12:38am
tomB:

Can you hear Sid Maurer sweetening the back track on that BT Express?
PS: Carlos Ward apparently still active.
  12:39am
Meghan:

I think I need an array of fake Rush shirts. About to take Bosco out
  12:40am
Holly in NC:

@Meghan -With the man, & the star? Jealous!!! :-)

Joe - You have access to a Permanent Waves shirt? Really? Really???!!
  12:44am
Holly in NC:

Cod piece. It's called a cod piece.
And, no, you can't ;-)
  12:44am
Meghan:

Mr Daniel Blumin! My favorite men of the station! And I expect that outfit at the holiday party damn it!
  12:44am
Meghan:

Mr Daniel Blumin! My favorite men of the station! And I expect that outfit at the holiday party damn it!
  12:50am
Joe D.:

McG I'm comin to hijack yr radio, gimme some good drivin tunes.
  12:50am
D. Blumin:

Holly, I just wasn't sure you could say COD piece on the radio, see! Trying to protect Surface Noise from becoming a show of ill-repute!
  12:51am
D. Blumin:

Hiya Meghan! I'm wearing it already but can't see why I can't put it back on in January...
  12:52am
Meghan:

Sah-weet!
  12:54am
Mike Sin:

Blumin's cod piece is made of real cod. It's a fish 'n' chips extravaganza down there.
  12:54am
Joe McG:

@MIke: I always thought it was tilapia.
  12:55am
Holly in NC:

Yay Dan! BTW, Letha is doing MUCH better & really appreciates everyone's concern & good wishes.
  12:57am
Meghan:

Off to snuggle with Bosco and pass out. Night all!
  12:58am
Holly in NC:

Last comment was in reference to Dan Melchior, not Dan[iel] Blumin. Sorry if confusing!
  12:58am
Joe McG:

@Meghan: Give the old boy a nudge for me.
  12:59am
Meghan:

Will do! I'll nudge Jeff for you as well. Hehe
  1:08am
Joe McG:

@Holly: Glad to hear Dan M.'s wife is feeling better! What good news.
  1:10am
Julie:

oh i missed Meghan!
  1:10am
Julie:

Hey there Joe!
  1:12am
Julie:

Donny fell from the Essex House? I spent a lot of time there as a kid..wow
  1:12am
Joe McG:

Hey, Julie! What's up?
  1:12am
Holly in NC:

Must go to bed, thank you for a great show, Joe! I'll catch the rest in the archives.
And BTW, a "Permanent Waves" shirt (baseball sleeves only!) would be a most excellent dj premium...just sayin'...
  1:12am
Joe McG:

@Holly: Well done, thanks for hanging out! @Duffy: Any of this help you drive?
  1:16am
Julie:

@Joe you want JoeD to answer you as he drives? All is as it should be, hearing your show at home. was fun being there last week though!
  1:18am
Holly in NC:

Oh dear god I LOVE this song. OK, I'm going to bed after this. Hi Julie :-)
  1:18am
Joe McG:

Yes! Don't crash, Joe!
  1:24am
Julie:

Hi Holly! Goodnight! Stay up late and visit my board sometime :)
  1:25am
Matt from Springfield:

Hey Joe!
INTENSE Bollywood song, with that chorus, synth and strong female vocal!
  1:25am
Julie:

The great Surface Noise car crash of 2011. It was legendary, because all walked away. Cars were totaled but radios were all mysteriously intact.
  1:26am
Mike Sin:

Where in da hell iz everyone goin'? Single file is minutes away!
  1:27am
Julie:

Hi there Mike!
  1:29am
Matt from Springfield:

Sir Daniel Blumin?? I SAY!!
  1:29am
Mike Sin:

Good morning, Julie.
  1:30am
Matt from Springfield:

Kollywood!
(Karnataka, maybe?)
  1:30am
Mike Sin:

Why isn't any part of this playlist in Russian?
  1:31am
Julie:

hi Matt
  1:31am
Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: Tim was on earlier--I caught tons of Cyrillic there, per usual!
  1:32am
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Julie!
  1:32am
Julie:

People's asses traveling here
  1:34am
Mike Sin:

Salman Rushdie has a cool codpiece.
  1:36am
Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: Some say it's actually red herring.
  1:36am
Joe McG:

Hey, Matt! PATH = Port Authority Trans Hudson says helpful caller!
  1:38am
Julie:

Fly Trans Hudson Authority gets you there not on time
  1:39am
Matt from Springfield:

It would be easier if it was "Persons Authorized To Hover"--you can get past all the red tape and lines by levitating over the Hudson.
  1:41am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: The Essex House is apparently still around--is that just a well known hotel in New York?
  1:43am
Julie:

@Matt yep. Back in the dark ages, Saturday Night Live would proudly announce their guests would stay at marriott's essex house. It's changed hands several times since.
  1:43am
Joe McG:

Used to be a great commercial on local NY TV about the Essex House. SNL made fun of it early on.
  1:44am
Julie:

There was a murder there a year or so ago. Some guy who worked there attacked some girl in one of the rooms.
  1:45am
Holly in NC:

@Julie - you know I'm a religious archive listener, and I hope soon to be able to be a live listener - keep fingers crossed!
@ everyone else - forget salmon/salman, I have serious apricot pronunciation issues.
APEricot, to my mind, is NOT correct.

While I'm waiting for water to boil I may as well apologize for my horrible misuse of the possessive in an earlier comment - I plead utter exhaustion & beg for clemency.

zzzz.....good night to all!
  1:47am
tomB:

Beehive State: Stolen from Procul Harum's "Devil Came from Kansas"? or the other way around?
  1:48am
Julie:

Igor Stravinsky lived there.
  1:48am
Julie:

And I used to sit on the windowsill on the 41st floor when I was a teenager.
  1:48am
Matt from Springfield:

Beehive State...there's some white rapper apparently from Utah calling himself "Bee Money", funny and weird!
  1:49am
Joe McG:

@tomB: Randy may be making fun of Procol Harum as he did later with ELO. Certainly possible!
  1:49am
Julie:

I really like this band Delta 5, I will have to check them out more.
  1:50am
Mike Sin:

re: Essex House
Don Pardo was doing promo for Essex House on "Saturday Night Live" before that show was officially called "Saturday Night Live"!
  1:50am
Julie:

I wonder what she found out about you
  1:51am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Ever notice how some places just have a dark aura about them, even for years at a time? From Donny Hathaway's apparent suicide to that murder...like the Jews say about Tisha B'Av, bad things tend to happen then no matter what the year.

And considering all that, what a deliciously dark thing to do on the 41st floor! :)
  1:52am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: ME???

@Mike: "Live from New York, it's 'Saturday Night'!" Howard Cosell evidently had a one-season show called "Saturday Night Live" at the time, so they couldn't take that title yet.
  1:53am
Matt from Springfield:

The Teardrop Explodes on 45, impressive Joe!
  1:53am
Julie:

Yeah it was nuts...But as you can see I didn't fall out. i also climbed up the scary dark staircases up to the very top of the building. it was a fun place for a kid.
  1:55am
Holly in NC:

@Julie - I bet you're the best raconteur ever. You do need to move to NC!
  1:55am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: I sometimes like to climb up dark staircases of tall buildings :)

@Joe: The tune and subject of this song remind me of "Does Your Mama Know About Me?", sung by The Supremes, written by none other than Tommy Chong!
  1:55am
Julie:

Joe do you just buy every old 45 you find?
  1:56am
Julie:

@Holly I'm thinking of it
  1:56am
Mike Sin:

re: The Lovelites
This single was just beggin' for limited airplay on the AM dial in 1969.
  1:56am
Julie:

Tommy Chong?? really?
  1:56am
Joe McG:

@Julie: Of course not! I'm highly selective!
  1:56am
Julie:

ROBYN!!
  1:57am
Matt from Springfield:

You just walk out with the rest under your shirt Joe! ;)
  1:57am
Julie:

@Joe not saying they aren't good, you just have soooo many
  1:57am
Holly in NC:

ROBYN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  1:58am
Julie:

Okay as much as I love Robyn, this is kind of horrible..in a good kind of way
  1:58am
Julie:

I think Robyn is in town right now actually, or soon
  1:59am
Brian in UK:

Mornin' Joe & chums.
  1:59am
Matt from Springfield:

Yep, look up Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers, Chong's R&B soul band from the 60s in Vancouver. The Supremes covered that song.
  1:59am
Julie:

ah he's playing Freehold, NJ tonight (sunday)
  2:00am
Julie:

He played the Bell house tonight (saturday) darnit
  2:00am
Brian in UK:

Ah yes Notorious Byrd Brothers!!
  2:01am
Joe McG:

Hey, Brian! Played Ackles last week!
  2:03am
Holly in NC:

@Julie - I have, and like, both Groovy Decoy & Groovy Decay, even though the man himself cringes.
  2:03am
Brian in UK:

Yes Joe, caught it on archive following a group called The Beach Boys?. Nice. We went to see Richard Buckner in Brighton so missed the programme.
  2:05am
Julie:

And then it's back to the UK. :(
  2:05am
Julie:

wuthering heights! go request wuthering heights!
  2:05am
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Holly! Your bedtime desires have surrendered under the torrent of WFMU? :)
  2:05am
Holly in NC:

Love Richard Buckner also. He & Robyn both put on spectacular shows!
  2:06am
Holly in NC:

@Matt - yep. Ergo the boiling water for double strength green tea. Damn you, Joe McGasko!
  2:08am
cheri:

  2:08am
Julie:

No Weav is filling in for Mary, I believe
  2:09am
Julie:

oops that is Weev
  2:11am
Brian in UK:

It's a really misty, spooky kind of morning. Very autuminal. Very Jimmie Spheeris.
  2:13am
Matt from Springfield:

Cold Wave, Julie!! :D
  2:14am
Holly in NC:

Cure meets Bowie en France, what's not to like?
  2:16am
cheri:

joe & julie have fun this thankgiving..you two are the best!!
  2:16am
tomB:

Jimmy Spheeris! Felix Cavaliere's forgotten protege and unfairly overlooked!
  2:17am
Julie:

I don't even know Jimmy Spheeris
  2:19am
Brian in UK:

tomB well it was before Felix I believe. Something from Isle of View (say it fast) would be perfect for this day. Very sad he was killed on his motorbike by a drunk driver if memory serves. His MD was Becks old man.
  2:21am
Julie:

ooooooooh I knew I was staying up late for something
  2:21am
ADM:

Oh syd....
  2:21am
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, Syd shortly after Robyn!
  2:22am
Julie:

Did the accident happen in front of the Essex House? (just want to tie everything together)
  2:22am
Holly in NC:

oh, Joe, you are now officially pandering to Julie! :-)
  2:22am
Julie:

next thing you know he'll be getting out the Ray Davies
  2:23am
Julie:

You know it's so funny, I know all the Syd songs but I can match hardly any of them to the names
  2:23am
Holly in NC:

No, the double shot!
  2:24am
Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: You TOO can pander to Julie! Just check out her comment board like you were intending :-)

(It IS difficult, when I catch it I usually get up early, sometimes up late from the day before, sometimes I crash early, and wake up for the show)
  2:24am
Holly in NC:

Or not.
  2:25am
Julie:

This is wonderful! must be a great comp
  2:25am
cheri:

well joe & julie good night for real,,
  2:26am
Holly in NC:

"Or not" re double shot, not re Julie pandering
  2:26am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Have you played "Feel"? Because I remember that beginning to "If It's In You" ("all the fives crock Henrietta" one) being attached to the end of something I heard here. My version of If It's In You begins with "Yes I'm thiiiiiiiiiiiinking of this..."
  2:26am
Matt from Springfield:

@Holly Don't worry, I understood!
  2:27am
Julie:

There are so very many mixed up different versions of Syd songs, try to figure it out and you too will be schizophrenic
  2:28am
Matt from Springfield:

No Druids, Joe! You're just giving me a craving for more "Stonehenge"! :)
  2:30am
Holly in NC:

Julie -
http://spurensicherung.blogspot.com/
is where kraut! demons! kraut! was born. Really great site.
  2:34am
Holly in NC:

Joe, that Dino Valenti was awesome
  2:35am
Joe McG:

@Holly: This new collection of discarded demos is pretty amazing, content-wise and sound-quality-wise
  2:35am
tomB:

@Joe. Keep up the Dino Valenti.
@Brian UK. Felix's connection to Jimmie Spheeris was probably thru Laura Nyro. And by "protege" I just meant that Felix was promoting JS, maybe as a producer.
  2:35am
Brian in UK:

Did Dino write 'Hey Joe'?
  2:37am
Julie:

good site..can't find that particular comp but interesting stuff there, thanks Holly
  2:37am
Joe McG:

@Brian: I don't think so, actually.
  2:38am
Julie:

Wasn't there a guy called Gino Valenti too?
  2:39am
Brian in UK:

tomB Laura was a real influence in his styling. I think he might even have shared a place with her for a while. Yeah Felix produced the second album.
Joe I was never sure.
  2:39am
Julie:

Darn I wish Mary was there tonight
  2:40am
Julie:

Good for her, though, getting some sleep!
  2:40am
Brian in UK:

Julie he worked in a pizza parlour.
  2:42am
Julie:

mmm pizza
  2:42am
Joe McG:

Sorry, everyone, about mis-announcing that Mary would be on after me. Actually, she's just on tonight for Martha from 9 pm to midnight.
  2:43am
#K:

  2:46am
Brian in UK:

Was Roedelius in Cluster oh mighty oracle?
  2:46am
Joe McG:

@Brian: Indeed he was!
  2:47am
#K:

She was & is the best. Actually, she was playing your show but it was difficult to pay attention on account of conversations. But I think you should know that.
  2:47am
Julie:

Going to miss Anne :(
  2:48am
Joe McG:

Wow, that's so great. Glad I kept it uptempo!
  2:48am
Matt from Springfield:

Roedelius Clusters, part of a balanced Krautrock breakfast.
  2:49am
Joe D.:

WHAT UP #K!!!!!
  2:49am
Brian in UK:

It'll mess with your head, Matt. Eat it at 11. (volume)
  2:50am
#K:

DUFFY!!!!!!!!! awww geez I haven't seen you in a minute!
  2:51am
Joe D.:

well keep listening! and please keep in mind that the opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the AP or WFMU
  2:52am
Julie:

Okay this is way too sleep-inducing

Hey Brian! There's always been confusion about Valenti's relation to Hey Joe. In 1968, a traveler from SF told me that Valenti had sold the rights to his songs to get out of jail for knifing someone. But currently it is claimed that a lesser-known singer, Billy Roberts, had assigned the rights to Valenti to aid Valenti in his release from prison. Crosby popularized the tune in LA, having learned it pre-Byrds from Billy Roberts in SF.

Brian from UK, despite your aversion I recommend the very detailed Wikipedia article about "Hey Joe" which explains the Valenti connection to Billy Roberts's song.
Julie, you may be thinking of Gino Vannelli - three Billboard Hot 100 hits, 1974-78 on A&M, the poppermost of which was "I Just Wanna Stop" (#4, Dec ,78).
Thanks for the program, Joe.

I was being told to come to bed as I posted about Donnie H. I didn't realize it would be an ongoing topic and I'd gone *poof*. But you know, when someone wants you to come to bed at midnight on Saturday, you'd be stupid to say no... Checking out archives this morning...
