Good morning, Liz et al.
  9:05am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

Good morning! I'm at home today with my daughter. We're both enjoying Vulcanus 68.
  9:08am
Liz B.:

Morning everybody! Let's do this Monday thing!
  9:09am
r i s k y:

Liz!!! Goodmorning from your number 845th biggest fan!
  9:11am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

I'm trying to teach my daughter that it's not safe to put a bag on one's head.
  9:12am
bruceleh:

Good morning Liz!
Happy to have finally gotten my outdoor FM antenna working, now I can finally remote desktop to the office and listen to WFMU without the stream sucking up any of the bandwidth!
  9:15am
Cheri Pi:

PTV sounding especially good this morning.
  9:16am
Liz B.:

Hey bruceleh, congrats on the antenna, and hi DCE, thanks for teaching our youth these very important truths!
  9:30am
Dead Corporate Eyes:

it's hard to because I enjoy putting bags on my own head...it feels hypocritical.
  9:35am
seang:

free music!
  9:36am
jaypee:

Oooooo, Ending Satellites is a perfect accompaniment for my Monday coffee. ZOOOM.
  9:36am
Liz B.:

The art of placing a plastic bag on one's head with proper chutzpah only comes with age.
  9:38am
jaypee:

Also: did someone forget to pay the registration fee on freemusicarchive.org? I keep getting booted to a placeholder page...
  9:40am
Liz B.:

FMA is having DNS probz today, jaypee. Should be resolved soon. I almost couldn't get my traxx for the show today!
  9:41am
jaypee:

Yikes! Thanks, Liz B!
  10:06am
Liz B.:

This was such an awesome set by Mueran Humanos... you can listen back here:

  10:08am
bruceleh:

Liz, inquiring minds want to know, obviously a WFMU DJ can play an mp3 from an external file system, but what about other formats? Especially lossless codecs, like FLAC or ALAC (m4a).
Does WFMU's digital library (not archive) support multiple formats?
  10:15am
bruceleh:

Another question... let's say the DJ plays an mp3.
Obviously the mp3 is decoded to an analog signal for FM broadcast. But is the mp3 played directly (no decoding) onto the digital stream? Or is the analog signal that is being broadcast re-digitized for streaming? Redigitizing has a potential for additional loss, no?
  10:16am
BSI:

re-joining my noisy little home away from home after a week-plus of being sick as a pig. ... did all these colors exist before? ... when was before? Is this the afterlife?
  10:19am
Liz B.:

We use programs like winamp, VLC, iTunes, Finder, and a few others to play music over the air. We can play flac, MP3, m4a, wav, etc. Everything that goes out over the air and web goes through some compression, the web stream audio is converted to digital (our audio board is analog). There is some room for error there, and I think we could probably optimize our stream sound a bit. That is, unless the person on air is playing a youtube video!
  10:21am
Liz B.:

Welcome back, BSI! Glad you are no longer pig sick.
  10:21am
still b/p:

Apparently this was when El Paso and the whole region was underwater a couple hundred million years ago.
  10:23am
bruceleh:

So after compression, which has a higher dynamic range, the highest bit rate mp3 stream or the FM analog signal?
Please don't say the mp3 stream!
  10:25am
Liz B.:

The FM signal will always have better fidelity than the MP3 stream (unless you don't get good reception, of course).
  10:29am
bruceleh:

Glad to hear, especially after all the physical work I had to do to set up a working FM antenna in my new apartment!
Not only can us NYers bask in our cultural elitism, but we can bask in WFMU signal elitism!
  10:37am
bruceleh:

I really wished I had learned more about signal processing, both analog and digital, in college.
I find this stuff absolutely fascinating.
Duh, I'm a nerd!
  10:38am
fred von helsing:

signal convolution !
  10:40am
Cheri Pi:

I knew this was Boris!!! I love Wata.
  10:42am
bruceleh:

Vive la transformée de Fourier!
Once you get the frequency domain, there's no turning back to the time domain!
  10:44am
#K:

AHHH!!!! LIZ IS PLAYING THE WAKE!!!!!!!! *_* great surprise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  10:48am
Ike:

Hey hey! Loved that Colours. Re: streams vs. FM, I adore the FM evenings and weekends. At work, I have to stream. And I salute you, Bruceleh -- glad someone else still appreciates the art of FM antenna placement.
  10:50am
BSI:

Jeepers, sounded like we had a sludge version of Hurry On Sundown for a minute there.
  10:59am
Carmichael:

HI Liz und Leute.
  11:08am
dc pat:

wow, Lou Reed and Susanne Vega? Are they going big time now?
  11:09am
Jennique:

Morning Liz! Thanks for the shout out to Gary Panter. I am a fan of all his work.
  11:10am
still b/p:

Lou Reed made the Boston Phoenix 2011 list of 100 Unsexiest Men...at #23 with some Lulu-linked slaps :
http://100unsexiest.com/unsexy/2011/?page=8
  11:16am
Observer:

Lou's people haven't canceled yet? I'd love to hear him on 7SD, but I bet the odds are his people will cancel for him Weds. afternoon sometime.
  11:18am
Mike East:

Lou Reed stole my stapler.
  11:21am
Liz B.:

What are your tactics for preventing stapler theft? I put girly stickers all over mine.
  11:22am
Laurie:

Worked for me.
  11:31am
Mike East:

Working in the front office makes stapler theft near un preventable. My first and last line of defense is "you can borrow it as long as you bring it back."
  11:31am
still b/p:

Lulu's been short-spoofed, of course:
http://tinyurl.com/85g66a
..but a longer workover with someone imitating Lou's ''singing" with lyrics made entirely of published negative remarks about the album would be fun, and could include some back-masked mention of minor theft.
  11:37am
Cheri Pi:

Yeah yeah! Endless Boogie!
  11:43am
earwax:

And I said, I don't care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Bill that if they move my desk one more time, then, then I'm, I'm quitting, I'm going to quit. And, and I told Don too, because they've moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were merry, but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it's not okay because if they take my stapler then I'll set the building on fire...
