I took physics of music as an undergrad at U Michigan, to "get out of" taking a real science course (a general-ed requirement). Man, what a buttload of math. Lengths of vibrating tube calcuations, how speakers work, sheesh.

Anyway, 440 hertz means the waves propagating through the air have 440 peaks and troughs per second going past your eardrum.

Hundreds of years ago, "A" was tuned considerably lower than 440. Orchestras very gradually (accidentally?) uptuned to sound brighter. In the 19th century things stabilized around 440 for that "A" they all tune to before playing a piece...

Hey, I don't get to use that physics of music info very often...

So nice to have you back. To survive during your absence, I have listened to your archives all the way through over and over. Then recently I saw that you had a show again! Hooray! Wish it could be longer than an hour.

@G: Yes, and choral pieces presumably were somewhat easier to sing then, at least for this marginal tenor.

When I first saw the program, I too, was disappointed in the show only being one hour.
But this is very much music that will bear, and require, repeated listening.
Great show, Bethany!
