Anyway, 440 hertz means the waves propagating through the air have 440 peaks and troughs per second going past your eardrum.
Hundreds of years ago, "A" was tuned considerably lower than 440. Orchestras very gradually (accidentally?) uptuned to sound brighter. In the 19th century things stabilized around 440 for that "A" they all tune to before playing a piece...
Hey, I don't get to use that physics of music info very often...
