Listener comments!

  3:32pm
rrg:

It's All-Request Wednesday!

Okay, it's not, that's not my call. But it's still a great idea.

Me first: I'd like to hear some Bob and Ray.
  3:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

Oh no, not Christmas song radio waterboarding here too!
  3:32pm
Listening Out There:

An emasculating photo, that...
  3:33pm
earwax:

What is that thing being sliced in the picture?
  3:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

Sausage perhaps?
Still, did you set up that photo Irwin? Or just capture the result?
  3:34pm
glenn:

can i hear amanda?:
  3:34pm
Listening Out There:

....cutbacks all over, I guess....
  3:35pm
Dave B:

I'd like to hear "Cookie Santa"

thank you.
  3:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

@glenn: There are at least COOKIES in the photo! :)
  3:35pm
trrs:

Basta !
  3:36pm
T-Zero:

@Matt: Albeit off the beaten path, I've heard more Christmas music on WFMU in the past two weeks, than all of commercial radio locally combined.
  3:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

This is like a drinking song without the drinking!
  3:37pm
Dave B:

the Lorena Bobbit Party Platter
  3:37pm
T-Zero:

@Dave B; Now, that was funny!
  3:38pm
promo dept.:

Damn you Dave B. -- I was one second away --
A very special portion of the season, tonight on CBS: Christmas at the Bobbitt House.
  3:38pm
BDR:

What did Jeffrey Daumer ask Lorena Bobbitt? You done with that?
  3:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

@TZ: I think most commercial stations have gotten the message not to overwhelm the waves with Xmas schlock. Some easy listening/AC stations still flood the schlock 24/7, but this year most stations have indeed been restrained in when they play Xmas music.
  3:39pm
kat330:

Wonder how the extra slice up under the cookies fits into the picture.
  3:40pm
Dave B:

@ kat330 - the mohle had the first go before Lorena showed up.
  3:41pm
Dan B From Upstate:

Funny, Matt. As usual, my market is the last to get the note. We've had not one, but two full time xmas music stations since black friday.
  3:41pm
kat330:

And given the scale size against the clementines, I think youse guys are wishfully thinking.
  3:43pm
Robert:

30 or maybe 29 or 28 years ago, I went for a ride with a friend on Christmas Eve. He bet we couldn't go for some time that sounded absurdly short without hearing Xmas music on the radio, and he won easily because no matter where I went on the dial -- even WFMU, which shocked me -- even the news stations, there was Xmas music immediately.

However, by the VERY NEXT YEAR, it was no longer anywhere near that way. So I think the trend already came & went rapidly from a sharp peak. Maybe it's played out again like that more recently.
  3:43pm
kat330:

To me it looks like some hideous dried prunes or dates concocktion.
  3:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: Proportionally, steroid use could be to blame.
  3:44pm
kat330:

And, yes, intentional misspelling.
  3:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

Are those the same clementines that Wednesday DJs are re-gifting each other as of now???
  3:45pm
glenn:

best insult i ever heard, from one guy on the streetcar to another guy; "holy fuck buddy, you got breath like the inside of jeffrey dahmer's freezer."
  3:46pm
Management Goons:

Irwin, you know we're gonna have to dock you for the missing 1/2 hour, right?
  3:46pm
rrg:

Streetcar?
  3:47pm
david:

Speaking of Amanda, have you guys seen this?! --- http://video.adultswim.com/the-heart-she-holler/cross-eyed.html
  3:47pm
glenn:

you bet. toronto has streetcars.
  3:47pm
rrg:

That was my guess.
  3:49pm
kat330:

I think the true re-gifting at FMU involves cold germs. Someone needs to Purell the mics.
  3:49pm
rrg:

So does Zurich. Or did when I was last there. But that was 38 years ago. So maybe not.
  3:50pm
wil d neil:

Torontos space age streetcars with the 8 panel doors...so cool!
  3:51pm
kat330:

@rrg: Hey, I was last in Zurich 37 years ago. Yes, streetcars (and on the honor system pretty much).
  3:51pm
wil d neil:

This reminds me of the theme from Rivers Edge...the avalanche guitar...
  3:51pm
rrg:

Yeah, those wacky Torontonians, with their "obsessively clean" streets.
  3:52pm
Emeril:

Who wants an andouille, tangerine and chocolate chip cookie sandwich?
  3:52pm
glenn:

not so much these days.
  3:53pm
wil d neil:

Toronto CLEANS their residential water mains ...with a great big bottle brush ...no kidding, I saw this!
  3:54pm
nestor:

the more songs you play, the less we have to look at that...picture.
  3:54pm
rrg:

Montreal had street cars in my lifetime. But the tracks had all been paved over before I was old enough to pay much attention to them.
  3:55pm
trrs:

I woudn't say obssessive.
'Slightly more natural' 'Slightly less disgusting'

Bins at the street corners are handy and winds and disgusting individuals still blow.
  3:55pm
rrg:

The more songs he plays, the more time to embellish the explanation for today's tardy start.
  3:57pm
AnAnonymousParty:

If that were my breakfast, I'd be late for work too.
  3:57pm
nestor:

it is my fault--the tardy.
  3:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

Special 3 hour Lamin, according to the front page.
  3:59pm
Adler:

Lamin fills in for 7SD and Rupture
  3:59pm
Robert:

Here in the Bronx they didn't have street cars in my lifetime, but they DID take forever to pave over the tracks in some places. Once in a while they still break thru.
  4:00pm
zach in philly:

what?
  4:00pm
Sir Paul:

I licensed the name "Macca-beats" to you on the condition you WILL NOT play that song!! My solicitors will call you promptly.
  4:00pm
rrg:

JM in the PM
  4:00pm
Brass Knuckles:

This song...I don't know. This is like an all new low.
  4:01pm
Desire:

I was a street car in days gone by.
  4:02pm
zach in philly:

im with you Brass knuckles
  4:02pm
Andy in Nova Scotia:

Oy! Make it STOP!
  4:03pm
Aharon:

I assume the Maccabeats is a pseudonym for Drake.
  4:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

Speaking of Jewish holidays, is Andy Breckman STILL not erecting a tent on Sukkot?
  4:03pm
kat330:

Somehow not heard "Christmas Wrapping" by The Waitresses on any dial so far this season. Got it, Irwin?
  4:04pm
Matt from Springfield:

Lawrence Welk Uncorked! Makes me want to buy that album, uncork something and party!
  4:05pm
Aharon:

@Matt: I wish you wouldn't use that euphemism re: Andy.
  4:05pm
abby in france:

hi irwin, nais gadol hayah sham. you were late but the music kept playing anyway. happy hannuka all.
  4:05pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat330: Mary Wing, on 100% Whatever, last week Dec 15. Others almost certainly are playing it, but FMU has given it a spin:

http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/43090
  4:07pm
zach in philly:

im diggin this
  4:07pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Aharon: It's an established 7SD meme, but I now see that's a very weird phrase to type!

Wait...was Andy and Ken's dialogue about him no longer pitching a tent merely ANOTHER in-joke about masturbation?? DEAR LORD!!!
  4:08pm
T-Zero:

Irwin, glad you made it in. Not the average take on You Are My sunshine. I like it!
  4:08pm
Arnold:

And up. And down. And up. And down. And Up. And down. Feel da buurn.
  4:10pm
kat330:

@Matt: I actually only stream 7SD and this show now but only in the last couple of months.
  4:10pm
Aharon:

@Matt from S: You don't even want to know what those gents mean when they say "in-joke."
  4:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

HUGS!!
  4:11pm
david:

Me want Cookie Santa!!!
  4:12pm
rrg:

The Komodo Dragon is the world's largest living lizard.
  4:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat330: Still a relative WFMU neophyte? Just you wait...mwhahahahaha!!
  4:13pm
Brass Knuckles:

Sometimes I think Irwin is really a teenage girl.
  4:14pm
kat330:

Not a neophyte to 7SD (first heard it back about when it started). Not enough hours in the day, alas.
  4:16pm
rrg:

That picture. It's still there.
  4:17pm
kat330:

It IS rather disturbing, but the food theme continues at the playlist site Matt gave me.
  4:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

Admit it, Irwin! You just want to fit all of your monologues in, even though you were late!
  4:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: It is that time of the season, for stocking-stuffing and stomach-stuffing...
  4:19pm
Myron Cohen:

An elderly man and woman meet for the first time at a Miami Beach social.
"And how's by you the sex?" asks the woman.
"Infrequently," replies the old man.
"Tell me," demands the woman, "is that one word or two?"
  4:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

You DID run over the Canadian geese I hope!
  4:22pm
rrg:

Did you say that just to push one of my buttons?

Now I have to type a response.

It's "Canada Goose", not "Canadian Goose".
  4:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Depressed Persian Cab Driver", now has one more reason to be depressed!
  4:22pm
ADL:

I just ran out to grab some Hannukah gifts when Irwin started talking. I'm back. Did I miss anything?
  4:23pm
Mel Brooks:

That doesn't include the Jewish cab drivers, does it?
  4:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

Woooooo!! COOKIE SANTA!!
Christmas prayers have been answered!
  4:23pm
kat330:

Volume......down......
  4:23pm
david:

YYYYYYEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHHH
  4:24pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Merry Christmas Amanda, wherever you are.
  4:24pm
zach in philly:

ha i love this
  4:24pm
kat330:

Aw, Matt always gets what HE wants....
  4:24pm
david:

This song is quickly surpassing that jangly McCartney/Wings song that I hear in Wal Mart and Target as the defacto Christmas heartwarmer
  4:24pm
Dave B:

YEAH!
  4:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

Father Christmas /
Give us some cookies /
We don't have time for your silly toys...
  4:25pm
david:

"Bring me cookies today, or you will PAAAAAYYYYY!!!"
  4:26pm
earwax:

Yay! Beefheart
  4:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat330: Now kat, be patient: if you want to get what you want, you ask to ask. Repeatedly. To the point of being a stalker. But it's a plus--they'll be afraid NOT to give in to you!

(Hi Irwin!!)
  4:27pm
Dave B:

amanda > beefheart = non sequitur deliciousness..
  4:28pm
kat330:

@Matt: I'm not that needy. :) But back to Mary's food pic: That's how you do compound butte only when you're unwilling to stick it up under the bird's skin.

It's 4:30, GST.
  4:31pm
rrg:

And as long as we're on the subject of Ken: there were only two measly Scotcheroos in the package I got from WFMU the other day. After I waited nine months for them. Is that fair?
  4:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: So ideally that turkey marinade should be inserted underneath the skin, to absorb into the meat better?
  4:35pm
kat330:

The fresh herbs and lemon zest, s&p mixed into the butter, yes.
  4:35pm
Mike East:

Do any other WFMU DJ's send out Xmas cards to their supporters like Glen Jones and X Ray Burns? Just curious. Anyone know? Every year, that really brightens my spirits. I'm gonna send one back this year.
  4:37pm
kat330:

Guess I'm serving up the recipes with or without The Waitresses.
  4:38pm
G:

That Vintage seltzer is one cheapass brand.
  4:38pm
nestor:

this is actually what the song was originally supposed to sound like.
  4:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: That's quite nice of them! I would add them to my list as well, if they always send you one.
  4:39pm

Ken Friedman, Scotcheroo Tightwad

Vintage Seltzer: it works for me.
  4:42pm

i guess so.
  4:42pm
rrg:

@G: I'll say. I was expecting enough to share, at least.
  4:42pm
kat330:

Interrupted by phone, so backing up now a bit: In re the Beefheart, here was my posted tribute to him: http://kat330.posterous.com/belated-beefheart-salute
  4:43pm
Mel Brooks:

@G: Wouldn't you agree that "Scotcheroo Tightwad" would be a good name for a band?
  4:44pm
rrg:

Definitely AGNFAB
  4:44pm
Mike East:

@Matt - It really is. They hand sign it and everything! They're definitely on my list
  4:48pm
BIG YANK:

WHERE IS EUGENE CHADBOURNE THESE DAYS
  4:48pm
kat330:

Thanks, Irwin -- music, lovely music!
  4:48pm
rrg:

"Hot Rats" is one of my all-time favorite albums.

Has Irwin ever played it before? I don't know, but I know how to find out.
  4:50pm
®:

Not much. You?
  4:50pm
rrg:

Playlist search says that Irwin's played this song ("Peaches en Regalia") once before (since 2000).
  4:51pm
kat330:

Now isn't this tonality so much more inventive and lovely than Amanda growling? [YMMV]
  4:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, "Ein Bißchen Frieden"--this is a rare Eurovision song (along with Abba's "Waterloo") that doesn't suck!
  4:57pm
kat330:

You didn't care for Finland's winner? ;)
  4:58pm
rrg:

I guess. I like some of the Eurovision stuff a little more than you. Or Irwin.

A friend of mine has an annual Eurovision-watching party. Gets a recording of the show, tells everyone not to look up who won, and has people over to watch.
  4:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: Which one? I'll judge it fairly, but based on previous winners, I place a generic 9:1 bet against :)
  4:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

LOL Irwin!
  4:59pm
kat330:

I think I'd like an alternate translation, Irwin.
  5:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

Shuggie Otis--original composer and performer (in the 60s) of "Strawberry Number 23".
  5:01pm
rrg:

"Willie the Pimp" (from "Hot Rats") is also a great arrangement-showcase tune. Beefheart on vocals.

  5:02pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks ®--didn't look up the proper title first!
  5:03pm
rrg:

@Matt: if I drank, maybe I would.
  5:03pm
kat330:

(And, no, Matt, Lordi is an embarrassment to my Finn husband.)

Best think about Britney is she had a song that Richard Thompson oh-so-cleverly covered and made listenable.

Speaking of tuneless barking: we could hear the Jingle Dogs, if this weren't WFMU.
  5:15pm

@kat330: What song was that?
  5:15pm

The dogs aren't as tuneless as Amanda.

@rrg: Actually I think singing animals would be more welcome on WFMU.
@kat330: I think Amanda good, Britney bad.
  5:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

Autotune super bad, and not in the movie kind of way.
  5:16pm
kat330:

Damn, guess I should actually proof my posts when I have the chance. "thing" and not "think" since, obviously, no thinking's involved with BS.
