Favoriting December 27, 2011: Special Guest Larry Bogad, the rebel clown prince, watches in disbelief as water pours into the studio through the ceiling light over Turntable 2, then is baffled by Thunk Tank in-jokes about Jay's tragically small vestibule.

  7:27pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hey guys!

Seriously, 7:26 and I'm FIRSTIES???!!
  7:30pm
pgw in mntclr:

comment of the week!
  7:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

Reverend Billy ROCKS!
We could all use a red-carpet stunt every once in a while, in our own work and lives.
  7:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

@pgw: Got that right!
Hey, (only?) fellow Thunktonian.
  7:38pm
Caryn:

Yay, the comments board is here!
  7:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Caryn!
I came in late--was the comments not up until about 7:20 or something?
  7:39pm
pgw in mntclr:

yeah, there was a comment limbo
  7:39pm
Caryn:

@Matt: yep, no comments board until about 7:25 or 7:26
  7:41pm
Caryn:

Man, tonight's show reminds me of our university semiotics class on the significance and political uses of carnivalism...
  7:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

I had a nasty stomach bug yesterday--totally ruined the rest of my long weekend. I was off work and doing better today.

But, while channel surfing earlier today I discovered the Hub network, and...the new "My Little Pony" series! I have to admit, it's a great children's show. Consider me a Brony sympathizer.
  7:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: The politics of "traditional" carnivalism, of traveling fairs?
  7:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Jay: "Den mother"?
  7:45pm
Caryn:

@Matt: the basic concept of carnivalism, as in the shifting of social roles, and clowns trading places with rulers etc. (a time when traditional social roles are rocked and reversed)
  7:45pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi all. Will there be any discussion of Putin and Russian politics tonight? There's a web site for Putin Action Comics with some satirical comments.
  7:46pm
Caryn:

@Matt: and also the basic role of clowns, tricksters and jesters in society as scapegoats, truthtellers, servants and rebels...
  7:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Ah, I know what you mean. Quite a radical (albeit temporary, socially accepted) context for medieval times.
  7:49pm
Caryn:

@Matt: yep, the idea that something so totally in contradiction to the social mores of medieval times was socially accepted once a year and also acted as a kind of pressure valve is quite fascinating
  7:49pm
al from goshen:

my new year's resolution is to change my underwear every day instead of once a week.
  7:51pm
Caryn:

the 2012 discussion makes me think of the stand-up comedian who said that of course the Mayan calendar ends, all calendars do. That just means it's time to buy a new calendar...
  7:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

You can never have too many BOOKS!! Your space is just being selfish for not supporting all your books!!
  7:56pm
G:

caller "is it me?"
  7:56pm
Caryn:

My apartment is not supporting my books either! I literally have foot-wide corridors from one room to another surrounded by stacks of books and DVDs. It's starting to look like an episode of "Hoarders", except more organized.
  7:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

And Listener David to bring it to a nice warm close!
  8:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

Goodnight Bronwyn, Jay, Larry, commenters!
  8:00pm
Caryn:

G'night all!
