G:

Mike East:

I'm ready!
  3:03pm
12539:

  3:04pm
37:

me too!
  3:04pm
G:

innovative, huh, 12539?
  3:04pm
37:

ready that is
  3:04pm
12539:

O I forgot - it always starts at the right speed.
  3:05pm
Parq:

KG lulls the unsuspecting listener into a false sense of security.
  3:06pm
kat330:

Hey, cool ones!
  3:06pm
Cecile:

hey cool kat
  3:07pm
kat330:

Monk up, listeners! Cecile, did you submit?
  3:08pm
Cecile:

no.
If Kurt is doing this for the other ones, I might do something then.
  3:13pm
DJ KG:

there will be other friday the 13th calls to action, yes, with other rules.
hi everyone!
  3:13pm
kat330:

Just got the mail and our straggler Mouse pledge premium arrived. Poring over the Wolfy map of the state of New Jersey.
  3:14pm
kat330:

@DJ KG: Appropriate time stamps on our posts.
  3:15pm
DJ KG:

pardon?
  3:15pm
kat330:

3: "13"
  3:16pm
bruceleh:

Steve Fuckin' Lacy.
Just sayin'
  3:16pm
Parq:

KG, your last post and her following post were time-stamped 3:13, as in Friday The. Hang in there with us, son, we like to keep you on your toes.
  3:18pm
DJ KG:

kat'n'parq - ah!

brucelab - yah!
  3:18pm
kat330:

He's multitasking, so I can understand.
  3:18pm
still b/p:

KG has thirteen toes?
  3:19pm
37:

i'm so confused, but amused
  3:20pm
kat330:

'Spose it could be interpreted: [It is] appropriate [that] time stamps on our posts.
  3:20pm
Parq:

The cool thing is, at 4:13, we can do it all again!
  3:21pm
kat330:

Monk up, 37! Have you run into #6 lately?
  3:22pm
kat330:

More familiar speed here.
  3:24pm
kat330:

Time stamps and time signatures...but Tom Waits for no one.
  3:24pm
Orson:

We will sell no Waits, before it's Tom.
  3:25pm
kat330:

@Parq: If we all try to, doubt if many will get through.
  3:26pm
G:

Have it at 331/3? Scatter plays throughout the show at 16, 45, and 78. Etc. :-P
  3:27pm
12539:

Backwards!
  3:28pm
G:

off-center
  3:28pm
kat330:

  3:28pm
stupendo:

Ciao! I am "live in Italy" too. I can listen to 3 hours of this nessun problema (right up till midnight here). Thank you Kurt!
  3:29pm
kat330:

oooh, he missed the little run down.
  3:30pm
still b/p:

So that April 13th occurrence means tax day is a Sunday, so we can procrastinate 'til Monday.
  3:30pm
kat330:

Think it was a triplet Monk does, but I never took music theory.
  3:32pm
kat330:

Anyone else notice that in the Peterson picking?
  3:34pm
12539:

With a name like Grg Ptrsn, abridgement is to be expected.
  3:36pm
na:

monk vs mothra
  3:37pm
kat330:

You have a good point, 12539.
  3:39pm
Carmichael:

Hiya DJKG and hepcat listeners. I am without a doubt the loneliest monk.
  3:43pm
Andy's Agent:

Does Andy get a licensing fee or something on this Monk show? Because I have 15% coming.
  3:43pm
kat330:

Am I hearing strains of "Somewhere" in this?
  3:43pm
kat330:

Hi, Car ar ar!
  3:44pm
kat330:

"there's a place for us" IOW.
  3:54pm
rutherfordicus:

monkalicious
  3:55pm
kat330:

I like the scatting alongside it.
  3:56pm
kat330:

Guess I'll stifle myself for a while.
  3:56pm
still b/p:

If we get some kind of recincarnation/do-over, and with choices, I'd think about learning to play vibes.
  3:57pm
still b/p:

Subtract one 'c'.
  3:57pm
DJ KG:

kat - keep talking!
b/p - it's not too late!
  3:58pm
Cecile:

who's that guy named Steve who's a great vibe player? Just heard about him recently, but he's been aruond for years.
  4:01pm
Carmichael:

I'm studying contract law and keeping a steady finger drumbeat.
  4:02pm
Caryn:

Vibes would be nice. I've played metallophone in an orchestra, but I think vibes are cooler.
  4:04pm
Interwebs:

All your consumer base are belong to us.
  4:05pm
Cecile:

I will provide that information for you on April 31, 2012.
  4:05pm
das:

I'd like to hear Friday the 13th right about now
  4:06pm
Marmalade Kitty:

what kind of creep collects that kind of information?? Super Creep
  4:07pm
Marmalade Kitty:

I heard a version of TMonks Pannonica
  4:09pm
Harry Manfredini:

Yeah, play some Friday the 13th!
  4:12pm
Marmalade Kitty:

anyone working in advertising marketing, go kill yourself!
  4:12pm
kat330:

@Kurt: That run/triplet bit is a major reason why I didn't submit. It's a bitch on an acoustic classical guitar or a melodica. But if I can just skip it...maybe....
  4:14pm
hamburger:

it's a bitch on the kazoo too
  4:14pm
Mike East:

Anybody know someone with a stock of Lyon & Healy harp rods in the Virginia/Kentucky area?
  4:15pm
37:

that anthony coleman version was awesome!
  4:15pm
kat330:

What about the Jew's harp? Any versions Ken could dredge up?
  4:16pm
Mike East:

oh man, I wish it was a jews harp. That would make life so much easier.
  4:16pm
kat330:

Love it!
  4:17pm
Carmichael:

I bet a yodelling version exists. That triplet run would sound cool!
  4:17pm
kat330:

Imagine it would be hardest of all on the saw.
  4:18pm
Caryn:

@kat: hey, it's your version, you can skip it if you want!
On a side note, I went to a jazz high school. Didn't hear or play "Friday the 13th" there once, which I was kicking myself about when the whole Monkathon was announced. But we did get our math lessons occasionally interrupted by a guy with an alto sax asking us to "name that tune", which was nice.
  4:19pm
grg:

just to clarify. . . i left out the little descending run in my version in order to preserve the ringing of the preceding notes, not because of its bitchiness to play (though i won't say it's easy, either.)
  4:19pm
kat330:

Moi, Caryn! Jazz HS? Sweet.
  4:20pm
kat330:

But I couldn't skip it. I'm a stickler A-type. But I might sing it, speak of the McFerrin devil.
  4:20pm
Cecile:

grg, I missed it, but will catch it on archives.
  4:21pm
kat330:

grg: Yes, I can see that as valid because it was sounding muddied when I attempted at the tempo I heard online. Not criticizing, just noting.
  4:22pm
Caryn:

Yeah, kat. They taught all kinds of music, but a lot of emphasis was placed on jazz, including musical improv, and tests where we'd have to listen to jazz tracks and name the time signature, the instruments and the original tune they were riffing on.
  4:22pm
ranjit:

I'd never heard Friday the 13th before. By the first break, it was my favorite song ever. Before the second break, I was playing along on my toy plastic Tonette. I hope and expect to despise this song before 6pm.
  4:23pm
Marmalade Kitty:

You can't beat a little Thelonious Monk
  4:24pm
kat330:

Monks have to beat themselves. (Python ref.)
  4:26pm
kat330:

@Car, backing up: Yodeling a triplet? Eeesh, I think you might throw a tonsil out trying that.
  4:27pm
DJ KG:

ranjit: YAY!

plus loving having some guitar geek talk going on here. wish i was a good enough guitarist to play it myself.
  4:32pm
Carmichael:

I don't know how people can yodel at all. Sounds like their windpipe is about to burst. Listen to a great yodeler, and you can hear the effortless octave changing. I thought doing a Monk song would be a bizarre, Dokaka-like experience to hear.
  4:33pm
Caryn:

I wonder if there's a bagpipe version?
  4:34pm
DJ KG:

one-time fmu dj bart plantenga (the first real live wfmu dj i ever met!) wrote a great book on yodelling called "yodel-ah-hee-hoo" of course.
  4:34pm
kat330:

I can manage a smidgeon of yodeling. Has to be exactly in the right range, and it's really minimal. Now my uncle, he was great at it.
  4:36pm
kat330:

The Thirsty Ear label could use some Ear Juice.
  4:37pm
Slimslacks:

Wow being under the weather is fun!
  4:39pm
kat330:

@Parq: I notice no one got a 4:13 time stamp. I'd forgotten all about it.
  4:43pm
Cecile:

I am so tickled that we get to hear some good Steve Lacy on here.
  4:45pm
Cecile:

not that Steve Lacy did anything bad, but he was such a great interpreter of Monk.
  4:47pm
DJ KG:

cecile, absolutes! the #1
  4:48pm
kat330:

@caryn: Did Jamey Aebersold ever come to your jazz HS?
  4:49pm
Cecile:

someone should have a Steve Lacy birthday celebration - July 23.
  4:51pm
Caryn:

@kat: nope, at least not during my time. We had close ties with the local jazz festival and big band and got most outside education through them. But most education was by our own teachers, of course.
  5:03pm
Cecile:

Cortex Bomb.
Is that you BSI?
  5:06pm
jonathan:

hell yeah, horsey!!! thanks Kurt!
  5:06pm
Cecile:

That's so amazing you got so many listener submissions!
  5:07pm
rutherfordicus:

horsey!!!
  5:08pm
ranjit:

i agree with rutherfordicus.
  5:08pm
Mark in VT:

Great show. also brings back memories of when Kenny G was on the air at wfmu.
  5:08pm
Caryn:

@KG; are you going to playing the Microscopic Septet version of "Friday the 13th"?
  5:09pm
Caryn:

Well, my brain is on the fritz. You already played it. The versions are melding together, man!
  5:10pm
DJ KG:

kenny g = radio hero
  5:12pm
Carmichael:

Well now, this woke me out of my legalese-induced slumber!
  5:14pm
ranjit:

I'd like to hear a version of Friday the 13th by MEREDITH Monk. Someone make it happen, please.
  5:15pm
hamburger:

when I go to sleep all I'm gonna hear is bababa doobadoo boop, badooba dooba doo boop
  5:16pm
Mark in VT:

I need to miss some of this because I need to go out and bring the trash bins back inside from it being garbage day I hope satan was able to get all the bones he wanted from the garbage. Since he wants our bones.
  5:16pm
Cecile:

how is that different than any other night? :D
  5:19pm
kat330:

What'd I miss, shoot. Phone call I had to take...
  5:20pm
Carmichael:

This sounds like Charlie Brown's teacher.
  5:21pm
Caryn:

I believe you missed a version of "Friday the 13th", kat330.
  5:21pm
kat330:

No Pride, neigh on the Horsey, too...will catch it on archive..
  5:22pm
Caryn:

I'd actually like to hear a version by Charlie Brown's teacher.
  5:22pm
DJ KG:

but coming up next is a version of monk's "friday the 13th"
  5:23pm
Caryn:

This is the WFMU equivalent of the Python's "Mary, Queen of Scots" radio show.
  5:25pm
Caryn:

Oh look, appearance 3 by Lacy & appearance 2 by Bennink! Monk-obsessed, they are.
  5:26pm
northguineahills:

Quite a line up on this one
  5:26pm
DJ KG:

how many people would do versions of 'mary queen of scots'for me?
  5:26pm
DJ KG:

caryn, nice eye.
  5:26pm
Parq:

I like this one, from Regeneration. The wobbly 'bone sounds a bit like it's from a Max Fleischer cartoon.
  5:27pm
northguineahills:

@ranjit: I'd be so down to hear a Meridith Monk version!
  5:27pm
Curtis [Boston]:

Charlie Brown's Teacher
http://www.wavplanet.com/wavs.php?cat=2&subcat=250
  5:27pm
kat330:

I'd like to hear Lisa's version.
  5:29pm
Caryn:

BTW, apologies for the grammatical error. That should obviously be: Pythons'.
And that bit in the middle sounded like a piece of "Why Don't You Do Right"...
  5:29pm
Slimslacks:

paraskevidekatriaphobia
  5:31pm
Caryn:

Oh, Slimslacks, we all seem to be enjoying it, not fearing it.
  5:32pm
DJ KG:

2 appearances by roswell rudd as well, tho he didn't get on the playlist the first time.
  5:33pm
kat330:

Did you all get snow yet in Jersey? We had our first of the season yesterday here in the Louisville area.
  5:34pm
Slimslacks:

@ Caryn: Totally! The only thing I fear is an even better version than the one before.
  5:36pm
Louis Cypher:

Was Friday the 13th on the Hal Wilner thing? Late to the show.
  5:37pm
DJ KG:

no snow; bobby mcferring / bob dorough
  5:37pm
Mark in VT:

Did anyone do a kazoo version? Or a beat box version?
  5:38pm
Carmichael:

A barking dog version would be nice.
  5:40pm
kat330:

A chipMONK version.
  5:41pm
Caryn:

Then a koto version to bring it home.
  5:42pm
DJ KG:

omg, i would love to hear it on koto
  5:43pm
Cecile:

Mal Waldron - another great interpreter.
Ah...missed Roswell Rudd.
  5:43pm
kat330:

Caryn, Juha gave me a kantele one of my birthdays. It is custom-made and beautiful, but this dog was too old to learn such new tricks.
  5:43pm
Carmichael:

A marching band performing this at haltime would also be a treat.
  5:43pm
Caryn:

I was gonna say that a shakuhachi version would be impossible, due to the limited notes available, but I suspect some of the masters would be able to manipulate the instrument enough to play "Friday the 13th".
  5:45pm
Carmichael:

add an f in there.
  5:45pm
Caryn:

Oh, you're never too old, kat! Also, they've proven scientifically that old dogs learn new tricks just fine. So go for it! He should get you lessons on some future birthday... You hear me, J.T.?
  5:47pm
kat330:

J.T. isn't home yet. I really couldn't muster the enthusiasm, I'm afraid. This was probably a decade ago now, but it's a lovely piece of sculpture for the room.
  5:47pm
DJ KG:

steve lacy appearance #4!
  5:47pm
Patti Page Dog Version:

How much Kurt plays Friday (that's the thirteenth). Arf arf! The one with the beboppy wail...
  5:48pm
Marmalade Kitty:

surely no one listening to the show will ever forget Monks Friday 13th.. This by Mal Waldron is may be my favourite version tonight
  5:48pm
Caryn:

Oh well, it'll be talking point when you have people over. "What's that thing?" "Oh, it's a kantele." "A what?" etc.
  5:48pm
ranjit:

Kurt, please keep soliciting and collecting weird listener versions even after tonight. Maybe you can post them all on the web.
  5:48pm
Mark in VT:

I have a cat piano app on my iphone and I could not resist to do one with it just now.
  5:50pm
kat330:

Frankly, I doubt there are any kantele players within reasonable driving distance to teach me. I'm self-taught on guitar and, mostly, on piano, too.
  5:51pm
kat330:

This has been, well, supernatural, Kurt! Thanks 13 times over!
  5:51pm
Caryn:

Yay, Mark! Well, that's one track for next week's show ready, KG! Just fill the rest with your own varied selections.
  5:52pm
Mark in VT:

and also have a church pipe organ app I just did it on. the theremin app did not work so well.
  5:52pm
37:

thanks
  5:52pm
Caryn:

20 versions so far...
  5:52pm
DJ KG:

mark, send it in! right now!
  5:53pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Too easy to finish with Monks Friday 13th..?
  5:53pm
12539:

Paraskevidekatriaphilia! Thanks, Kurt.
  5:54pm
DJ KG:

tooooooooooooooooooo easy.
  5:55pm
Cecile:

you got the cat piano version yet, Kurt?
  5:55pm
Marmalade Kitty:

thats easy for you to say, 12539!
  5:55pm
Caryn:

I wonder if playing Monk's version backwards or at a different speed would also be too easy?
  5:55pm
Mark in VT:

I didn't record anything I just opened the apps and played the thing. I guess I could record it. But anyone can if they download those apps. The theremin one I think would prove challenging. The theremin app is fun.
  5:55pm
DJ KG:

mark's? no! 4.5 minutes left in the show
  5:56pm
Cecile:

Paraskevidekatriaphilia!
I think I knew someone from the UP with that last name. :D
  5:56pm
Caryn:

Last will be KG's own version...?
  5:56pm
Cecile:

mark, do it. Just a snippet.
  5:57pm
DJ KG:

last will be petula clark, silly.
  5:58pm
Cecile:

she did a version of Friday the 13th?
  5:58pm
Caryn:

Heh!
  5:59pm
Cecile:

someone should cut this up so it sounds like Friday the 13th.
  5:59pm
kat330:

G'night all! Gotta go downtown now.
  5:59pm
Caryn:

KG has cut up the Petula Clark into notes, which he has then reorganised into "Friday the 13th"? Naah... wishful thinking, that.
  6:00pm
Carmichael:

Thanks for the 1 song, Kurt.
  6:00pm
Caryn:

Great minds think alike, Cecile!
  6:01pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

The next Friday the 13th is in April....three months from now.
Avatar 11:01pm
ranjit:

Can we do this again on June 13, 2014? That's just about my birthday.
