Van, this show was originally broadcast on WFMU back in 1994-95. During the summer of '07 Steinski revived the program, but these original broadcasts haven't been heard since.
12:09pm
Jack:
We used to listen to these shows religiously, our first-ish exposure to re-mixes and mixed music. Thanks again, a wonderful birthday present for me.
12:12pm
ndbob:
Great to hear these - never heard them before since I never lived in the New York area.
12:15pm
Van in DC:
Yeah, I suppose this was before WFMU.ORG right? :) Gosh, I was still living in Germany.
12:17pm
Michael:
anyone old enough to remember Pete Barbutti playing the broom on the Tonight Show?
12:19pm
Jack:
I can remember him playing the broom, but I think I saw him do it on the afternoon Mike Douglas show. I wasn't allowed to stay up late and watch the Tonight Show.
12:19pm
Van in DC:
So what happened to Steinski?
12:20pm
Michael:
Ha! Maybe it was Mike Douglas. Or Merv. Or Steve Allen's afternoon show. But I think I did see him on with Carson.
12:21pm
Doug Schulkind:
Yeas, that's right Van. WFMU didn't start 'casting online until '96 or '97.
Steinski is still making monstrously great mixes. Keep track of him here: steinski.com
12:23pm
ndbob:
The first show I ever heard on the internet was Charlie's - maybe 1999?
Yes I am Jack. I pre-screened the show and wrote down all the track info from Steinski's mic breaks.
12:27pm
Van in DC:
My "gateway" show was just what, 6 or 7 months ago? I was doing a Twitter search for "Toyah" and came across someone named "Julie" :)
12:27pm
Jack:
My gateway show was Car Girl - was that her name? - and then Bob Brainen.
12:27pm
ndbob:
Irwin was my second WFMU show.
12:28pm
glenn:
my gateway show was either underwater theme park or michael shelley. i first heard about wfmu from a yo la tengo email
12:30pm
Van in DC:
So for me - Dark Night of the Soul, then Irene's show, then Amanda's and GTDS
12:30pm
Jack:
@michael, that's funny: Frank O'Toole was our fave Saturday night DJ, for years. I'm still having trouble getting used to his Monday morning show (but I listen every week still)
12:32pm
Brian en Angleterre:
Bebe, son of....
My gateway show was Doug Schulkind he said coyly.
12:32pm
Michael:
Jack: forgot Frank. Was it Frank into John N? I remember John loved boxing and talked about it quite a bit.
12:32pm
Van in DC:
For me now, I totally have to catch the amazing Jim Price show every Monday
Be careful, Brian, they say that Doug can lead to heavier mind-altering substances.
12:36pm
Jack:
I keep missing Jim Prices' show, after hearing the first one. ( still laughing ) I usually miss his show by a couple of minutes. An amazing show, the type of alternative programming that made WFMU so attractive to me in the first place, and still does.
I'm pretty sure some of Jim Price's old shows are available on archive. Go to the Playlists page at WFMU.ORG and scroll down.
12:39pm
Michael:
I do remember the Alan Watts lecture series and I think the Church of the Subgenius rant devivals for a while if I recall.
12:39pm
Brian en Angleterre:
It's just a touch of flu. I can handle it. No, really.
It is a shame that you'll never heard any of John Peel's shows. Sardonic is the best word I can think of. Heard so many new things, some of which I still cherish.
12:42pm
Jack:
Doug, i had this discussion with FXO and he didn't get it either...re:listening to the archives? It's not the same. I time-bind DJs. You, f'instance, will always be Friday mornings 9-12. How many years did you have that slot? Jeffery Davisons' show doesn't sound the same in the afternoon, or at night. I know, it's my hang-up.
12:43pm
Jack:
How about "the Secret Museum of the Air" with Citizen Kafka? I miss that one too.
12:45pm
Hugo:
John Peel? Oh yeah. Started back in 69 on what was then the old medium wave.
I have his final show for Radio London on a cd-r somewhere.
Anyone remember Radio Geronimo? Their signature tune was "Amazing Grace" by the Great Awakening. Years later I found it in a record shop in Camden Town in London.
12:45pm
ndbob:
me too Jack - once had a nice discussion with him on the phone
To me the thrill of listening to radio, is listening live. Same for in creating radio. I don't favor pre-recording shows unless I have to.
More importantly, though, is that I am still on Fridays, 9-12 Jack! I started in that slot in early 1995. You can hear me live every Friday morning (and Tuesday evenings, 6-7pm) on this here webstream, Give the Drummer Radio!
12:48pm
glenn:
i grew up with c.b.c.. i wish they had archived material avaiiable online, but alas.
12:50pm
Van in DC:
I don't mind listening on archives at all! Julie's show on archive every Tuesday during my workday gets me through (part) of the day :) I prefer live listening but...
12:51pm
Brian en Angleterre:
I think the thrill is not knowing what is coming next, that expectation of the known or unknown; enjoyable or otherwise. It matters not for the moment.
Hugo, Radio Geronimo was in the Thames Estuary if memory serves.
12:52pm
Van in DC:
I wonder where my email to Steinski just went :)
12:53pm
ndbob:
agreed Brian - I rarely look at playlists on archived shows.
12:53pm
Van in DC:
When I listen on archive, I generally avoid looking at the playlist just so I get the thrill of the surprise
Brian, that is why I'm choosing to do the live playlist for this pre-recorded show.
12:54pm
Van in DC:
Thanks for that Doug. For all intents & purposes, this is like a live show for me
12:56pm
Hugo:
Radio Geronimo was based in London, but broadcast out of Radio Monte Carlo for a year or so. Very much in the John Peel free form mode, mixing genres wildly. Later on the DJs shifted to the Mi Amigo ship which was also the home of Radio Careline. That's where the Thames Estuary enters the chronology.
YES! That it was I hope the experience is like for this show (and Tony Coulter on Tuesday and Destination Out on Monday). Even though the music has been pre-sequenced, the presentation is essentially live. Which is way better than dead.
Yeah thanks Doug. When the heck am I supposed to eat lunch on Fridays now?
1:04pm
Van in DC:
Oh. I guess lunchtime would be now :)
Thanks Doug!

This Steinski business....I like it. Thanks.
10:58am
Parq:
I was out of FMU's broadcasting range for much of the 90s (the whole Newgarden era is almost completely unfamiliar to me), so I'm so pleased to have a chance to catch up with this show.
10:59am
Parq:
Fun hearing the original "Never Fall in Love Again". I remember Ertha Kitt covering it, tagging it with a sly "But then, there's always tomorrow -- isn't there?" The Carpenters did an up-tempo version of it, as I recall.
11:01am
Parq:
And obviously, I'm not adverse to listening on the archives. Listening live is better of course, but with five WFMU feeds and, well, the rest of my life I have to live, there's just too much I'd miss without the 'chives. Fact is, even with them, there's too much I miss.
