I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

Doug played At Last and today it had extra... everything.
Just read that in the 70s, when Etta was in rehab, Keith Richards wrote her and said she could tour with the Stones if she stayed clean. Kind of like Evel Knievel saying "you can work with me if you're a safe, courteous driver."

Maddox has the correct take on SOPA - "There have been many bills attempted (and some passed) like SOPA before it. There's the DMCA act of 1998, PRO-IP Act of 2008, the 2011 Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, and now the PROTECT IP Act of 2012. Think this victory means anything? A new bill gets introduced every year or two like clockwork. Check back in a few years, and there'll be another SOPA or Protect IP Act being squeezed down the lower intestinal tracts of congress."

Self-Esteem Coach:

@BSI -- defining your handle as "BS + I" is not healthy math!

  12:59pm
G:

Popular cultural stuff is one of the few areas where the US remains dominant with mass audiences worldwide for now. Huge companies that make money from that activity (movies, tv, music, books, etc.) would prefer to game the governmental system to protect and perpetuate their dominance, rather than making the effort required to compete and adapt.

The railroads did the same thing when they were peaking and declining in the 20th century, and instead of adapting or competing with other transpotation modes, they became dysfunctional wards of the government. Nice work, guys.

Culture-selling companies need to work harder at figuring out how to make a smoother, easier delivery mode (the internet) work for them, rather than bribing the government to protect them from having to do so. They just can't order the tide not to come in. If they ruin the open internet here, other countries will come in to fill that gap, and they (and we) will be worse off than before.
  12:59pm
Bridie:

does congress need their diaper changed? does brycie? Darn it all. I'll get to work on it right away, but I can make one call to Dublin, you understand!

  1:03pm
D in Miami:

I don't think Bryce and most of his listeners are affected greatly by that popular culture stuff, but we do suffer the consequences of it in the trickle-down. No pun on congresses incontinence there. Or was it?

Avatar 1:07pm

  1:11pm
G:

@D in M: That's right, non-mass things like FMU are affected by having to follow and be affected by the same national laws and rules that might be driven by out-of-control mass-culture companies seeking to avoid adapting successfully to the internet.

It's been obvious since the mid 90s that information/entertainment delivery was going to switch to the internet. And even that long-term shift is just the most recent step in the vast development of improved transportation and communication that has been ongoing since the early 1800s. It shouldn't be any kind of news to these big blundering mass-culture behemoths.

If big companies haven't figured out how to make the internet work for them by now without demanding it just be ruined, they should be firing their big-salary "strategists" and finding better ones.
  1:11pm
andymorphic:

adrian sherwood!!!
  1:14pm
G:

@Noise: The more transportation and communication improve, the more skeletons there will be of companies that outlasted their time or didn't adapt well. "skeleton" = either bankruptcy ( = people don't want their service any mopre) or political protection ( = bribing politicians with the aim of avoiding option 1)

Endang has done much in the 1980s to revive the historic form kroncong, which is a blending of Indonesian and Portugese styles. Kroncong is performed by a diverse ensemble of instruments and is fronted by female singer who performs in a lazy, saccharine style.
  2:57pm

cut and paste. No brainwork done.
  2:58pm

bryce, just wondering. I have two cassettes from Indonesia and one cd from Malaysia (where she's moved).

kroncong is popular with older people, dangdut with younger. Again, stuff picked up on cassettes in jakarta. nice set.
