Live Performance and chat with Laura Gibson (with Jill Coykendall: clarinet, and Johanna Kunin: piano, flute, backing vocals)
With a voice that is both fragile and world-weary, Laura Gibson at first glance would seem to embody the gray skies of her native Portland in the Pacific Northwest but there's a lightness to her songs as well. Gibson doesn't use typical singer-songwriter instrumentation, liberally using clarinet and chamber-music touches in her songs. Her new album, La Grande, sounds both of an earlier age and of modern times, with the tiniest hint of Billie Holiday sneaking into her vocal delivery. Laura Gibson and her band played live on Irene's WFMU program.

Van in DC:

Yay!! Kate! So many thanks!

Hi Irene!
  12:10pm
Cecile:

wow. This is perhaps the first Kate Bush song I've actually liked.
  12:10pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

hey Irene. I need 50 words for rain this winter.
  12:11pm
Cecile:

how did the move go, Van?
  12:13pm
Van in DC:

Fairly well, thanks for asking...still adjusting though. Different lifestyle here than in Dallas, for sure

As for KaTe, one need only look at my Twitter avatar to figure out how I feel about her :)
  12:15pm
Cecile:

what's your handle on Twitter? I'm @dowdydiva
  12:16pm
Jay/ London:

Good afternoon Irene just got in from work. Enjoying the music, just right :)
  12:17pm
Van in DC:

@Van_in_DC :)
  12:18pm
Jay/ London:

@ cecile the new Kate bush l.P. is just good check it out more
  12:20pm
Van in DC:

Yeah, NPR had a link to the entire album weeks before its release....love it
  12:21pm
Cecile:

I'll have to do it track by track cause I really did not like Kate Bush in the past.
  12:23pm
dc pat:

what neighborhood you living in Van?
  12:23pm
Jay/ London:

oh its just gone all blue
  12:27pm
Van in DC:

@dc pat - Falls Church this time around...Alexandria just down from Crystal City last time, but that area is just so much $$$
  12:27pm
Parq:

Just for Cecile, my all-time favorite Beavis and Butthead dialog.
<watching Kate Bush video>
BH: I wish this chick would, like, stop whining.
BV: Y'know, we could always change the channel.
BH: I shouldn't *have* to. She should just shut up! *She's* the one who sucks!
  12:27pm
annie:

i tried to like kate bush, i really did.. there are a few of hers which appeal, but not alot..
  12:28pm
Van in DC:

I loved the exposure that Kate got from that though lol

Irene:

Gone blue for a grey-bluish day in the NYC area. Thanks for joining me today!
  12:28pm
BSI:

dang, I keep missing tracks from KB's snow record. Was a huge fan of the earliest stuff. Somewhat cautious though. "The Red Shoes" left scars of disappointment that bleed still.
  12:31pm
Van in DC:

In 83 or so, it was the same for me...did not like hearing my Air Force dorm mate always playing Kate. Then suddenly, a switch flipped in my head.
  12:33pm
Looms:

Very nice opening set. Hello y'all!
  12:35pm
Parq:

I should add that I really didn't like "Wuthering Heights" at all, but I've been a Kate fan since 1985 and "Running Up That Hill".
  12:39pm
BSI:

For me by far her peak was "The Dreaming" lp... delicate and savagely insane in equal measure.
  12:41pm
Van in DC:

Pat, are you right in DC then? I do work right across from the Smithsonian castle (L'Enfant area)
  12:42pm
dc pat:

I live in Glover Park and work in Ballston.
  12:43pm
dc pat:

(Glover Park, DC)
  12:43pm
Van in DC:

As I was driving in to the area, went right by Franconia-Springfield and thought of Matt :)
  12:45pm
Cecile:

same here, annie. But that track Irene played was very nice.
  12:46pm
Van in DC:

@BSI - totally agree on The Dreaming by the way. Probably still my all-time favorite album.

Moving on, I'm really looking forward to hearing the live set today!
  12:47pm
Looms:

I third BSI about The Dreaming, though I'm very fond of Hounds Of Love and Never For Ever too.
  12:50pm
dale:

just had to chime in - i'm a never for ever man, myself. with hounds of love the secret was out, sadly.
  12:52pm
northguineahills:

I concur w/ Cecile & Annie.
  12:53pm
dc pat:

and strangely, I don't have an opinion on the subject...on the fence with this one.
  12:54pm
PAS Music:

Love the drums on this one.
  12:56pm
seang:

  12:56pm
dc pat:

PAS, just about to say the same thing. Nice production.
  12:58pm
Davice:

Hi Irene, Good music for a rainy day!
  1:22pm
Van in DC:

I thought this sounded familiar....you played this last week Irene. Loving the live songs
  1:22pm
Parq:

Big Nellie McK fan here, Sean. I happened to see her offstage at a Loser's Lounge show recently. She carries her uke in a little pink shell case.
  1:23pm
Bill S:

Just tuned in!
Irene I got a signed copy of Laura's last album Beast Of Seasons because I preorded after hearing it here one afternoon. This also sounds great, look forward to it.
  1:26pm
12539:

Laura is sounding good.
  1:26pm
Cecile:

I've liked some songs I've heard of Nellie's, but haven't really dug into her repertoire.
  1:27pm
Cecile:

I have to say my favorite "girl singer" is Claire from Claire and the Reasons.
  1:28pm
Cecile:

remarkable since given my other music tastes there is no reason in hell I should like them, but I do.
  1:29pm
Cecile:

Laura should shop the "The Fire" song around. I can see someone taking a different, belting tack on it and having a big hit with it.
  1:30pm
Looms:

Yep, this live session is charming.
  1:38pm
BSI:

that was exceptionally groovy.
  1:40pm
Van in DC:

Oh hey, Arlington? Sweet!
  1:42pm
v k:

as for vocal comparisons, Laura Marling comes to mind
  1:42pm
duff:

Irene, I hear the subtle Billie Holiday similarity; though a different style of music. Still, fine.
  1:43pm
Van in DC:

Now I know what I'm doing on Friday night this week :) Arlington it is!
  1:43pm
Bill S:

  1:48pm
Van in DC:

Found Laura on twitter...thank her for the nice photo she posted of Jill & Johanna playing :)
  1:48pm
J G:

I love her voice! I also hear some Jolie Holland in it.
  1:50pm
Looms:

I'll be enjoying the album in a couple of days too.
  1:55pm
Bill S:

Love Beast of Seasons for long drives. Just get lost in it. Of course you can also get lost on the road just dreaming.
  1:56pm
Looms:

@Bill S: nice to know, I ordered it as well. Just read very nice things about it.
  1:58pm
Van in DC:

Really loving this Lindsey tune
  2:23pm
Bridget:

Hello! I really like the sound of this group ghost of saver tooth tiger. Never heard of them before.
  2:25pm
PAS Music:

The concept of "Songs to stay in bed with" is really bad if your at work. I was just kicked off of my bosses desk for lying down daydreaming to this soothing music. :)

Nice show.
  2:30pm
Bridget:

YAY! Harry Nilsson!
  2:30pm
Looms:

  2:10pm
Sean, Bristol:

Hi Irene,
Catching this show via The Archive, missed some great chat about my beloved Kate, saw her duet with Peter Gabriel, Earl's Court, London, 1987. You couldn't hear "Don't Give Up" for the first few minutes as the crowd was going apeshit. Great show as always, Irene
