  3:08pm Caryn:

Hello all!
  3:09pm dale:

hello fine deejay sir. that rose royce took me back to the 'quiet storm' on wbls back in the 80s
  3:10pm Caryn:

I loved it when they used "Wishing on a Star" as the theme music for "The Tenth Kingdom".
  3:14pm Minnesota Jeff:

Kurt, I am making sure to catch the show live this week so as to avoid absolutelty confusing the hell out of myself.
Avatar 3:15pm DJKG:

hi everyone! thanks for tuning in!

mn gif, are you sure listening won't confuse you more?
3:17pm see what you did there:

gif file name: tucanfusing
  3:17pm northguineahills:

This is quite different then all of the Anthony Braxton I've heard, which is a lot. Interesting. It's like an instrumental Luc Ferrari.
  3:17pm Steve Miller:

I'm gonna fly like a toucan, in a gif!
  3:19pm kat330:

Hi DJKG and all! Sorry for tuning in late but the mail brought a tax matter requiring immediate remedy.
  3:19pm Steve Miller:

Fly like a toucan, while I puff my fatty spliff...
  3:20pm Wisdom:

Taxes and death wait for no woman or man.
  3:20pm Minnesota Jeff:

Who would win in a fight: A Toucan or an American Bald Eagle? (also, I just now learned that Toucan is not spelled, Tucan)
  3:21pm kat330:

This really sucked though. I'm beginning to believe no accountants in any company have the foggiest notion of math.
  3:21pm Yalc:

Enjoy this essential Joe Feeny video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id7JMb8d_NQ
  3:22pm kat330:

If the U.S doesn't raise its math IQ, we are doomed to be China's bitch (which could happen in any event).
  3:22pm Accountants:

Our parents told us to major in something practical. We didn't know there would be any math on the test.
  3:23pm One-Coat Wonder:

Toucan flies above eco-disaster as Sherwin-Williams covers the earth.
  3:23pm AndroidKBot:

We'll end up playing the abacus balls on a crazy Chinese game show.
  3:26pm analyst:

Eagle size, beak and talons win pretty easily I think, unless toucan can go all bulldog with the bill and grab eagle neck for thirty minutes.
  3:27pm kat330:

Toucan play at this game.
  3:28pm Wincer:

ouch, kat330
  3:29pm R3:

Now is the wincer of our discontent...
  3:29pm Minnesota Jeff:

You guys aren't thinking outside the bun. American Eagles main source of food is Kellogs Fruit Loops ... think about it. Toucan's win via poisoned Fruit Loops, everytime.
  3:30pm slugluv1313:

UNDOR!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (i thought i recognized those dulcet tones!) THANK YOU, Kurt!!!!! this totally cheers me up!!!!!!!!!!!
  3:30pm Nate in Detroit:

This song is pretty much the perfect match for today's gif
  3:31pm Caryn:

The toucan pins the eagle down with its beak/bill/whatever and then force-feeds it Froot Loops until the eagle dies of an intestinal blockage. And dammit, MinnJeff got to the Froot Loops ahead of me!
  3:32pm amadray eenquay:

Ainbowray of eathday in an owlbay.
  3:37pm Caryn:

I suppose the toucan could tag team the eagle with his 3 nephews (seriously, why do all famous cartoon birds seem to reproduce by producing a trio of nephews or nieces out of thin air?)
  3:41pm Minnesota Jeff:

Are you expecting Toucan Sam's Nephews to be around all the time? The Toucan Sam's brother or sister must be out of town and he is watching them.
  3:42pm Carmichael:

Good afternoon KG and listener posse. I'll kick back and enjoy the shrieking.
  3:43pm Caryn:

Oh please, like we ever see the mysterious brother or sister any of these nephews or nieces belong to... Donald Duck has been taking care of his nephews for decades now.
  3:48pm Caryn:

If The Toucan Sam was just watching his nephews for a little while, he seems to be kinda irresponsible about it, taking them on global adventures to fight mad scientists, alien monsters, pirates, karate-fighting koi, etc. It's as if he's taking nephew-rearing advice from Scooby Doo.
  3:50pm The Montescoobi School:

  3:53pm Minnesota Jeff:

Huey Dewey, and Louie's father is dead I assume. Donald is in the Navy and can only see them on shore leave, thats why they live with Scrooge McDuck - who can at least provide for them with his millions. Toucan Sam probably isn't the more responsible uncle, sure, he's always getting into a mess. But when you need a sitter, you need a sitter.
Avatar 3:55pm DJKG:

i've been very confused by all this fowl language until now. thanks for clearing it up, mn gif.
  3:55pm NAMBLA:

  3:56pm bill:

I think I saw Count Chocula lurking around behind Obama the other night
  3:58pm r i s k y:

Go kurt!!!!!
  3:58pm Curious:

@bill: Did Biden's plugs look ok on tv?
  3:58pm Caryn:

We never see Donald's dad, either. He's Scrooge's nephew. As is Donald's cousin Daffy. And Daisy Duck is taking care of her nieces. I'm starting to suspect all cartoons in their off-screen time live on a compound, where everyone is given to their uncles or aunts to be raised. And the less said about the cartoon, where they explained the origins of Donald by having his egg fall from a tree (why the heck would a duck be nesting there?) and landing on the road in front of Scrooge's car, who apparently babynaps Donald and raises him. Except as "his nephew". WTF!?!
  3:59pm Curious:

@Caryn: Script a sequel to "Who Framed Roger Rabbit"
Avatar 4:00pm DJKG:

i clearly remember the shock when my mother explained to me that, no, there isn't a cartoon land where actors who play fred and barney live and where they film the shows and where everyone looks like that and so, no, we can't go visit there. i thought there was a place where everything was black and white, too.
  4:00pm northguineahills:

Gotta bounce, nice set Kurt!
  4:00pm Caryn:

@Curious: unfortunately the sequel would be less "funny romp" and more "Big Love"...
  4:01pm bill:

Curious: he looked fabulous as usual
  4:01pm Elevator Pitch:

Who Framed Roger Rabbit meets Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice
  4:03pm Feral_Parsnip:

Come on, Timmy. It's Xasthur. They're just a bunch of berserkers who got themselves stuck in the chaos fjords of another dimension. This happens all the times. Don't worry. They can't hurt you... here.
  4:05pm 37:

ok i'm here now.. feud on...
  4:05pm McCoys:

Fuck you, Hatfields.
  4:06pm Caryn:

In the feud, are you the eagle or the toucan, Kurt?
  4:07pm 37:

loren is so great.... this is beautiful!!
  4:08pm slugluv1313:

YES!!!!! for some reason i had thought that UNDOR was from Finland? but just recently learned of the HUNGARIAN element!!!!!! ah, my *happy* people . . . !
  4:09pm feud coach:

  4:10pm glenn:

would that place where everything is black and white be your playlist?
  4:11pm Caryn:

@slugluv: yep, Hungarian. We Finns have our own "don't show our real faces or call us by our own names" band, Lordi.
Avatar 4:11pm DJKG:

caryn, i am the eagle, i fly like an eagle, i can't hide my lyin' eyes
Avatar 4:11pm DJKG:

slug, funny thing, the band's website is a dot-fl domain. maybe they're based in finland? or maybe the german/hungarian thing is a lie? who knows?
  4:12pm Feral_Parsnip:

@ Kurt: derp, which ones were the barbarians stuck in the chaos fjords, though? Xasthur, or Undor?
Avatar 4:12pm DJKG:

undor can't hide their lyin eyes.
  4:13pm glenn:

what's black and yellow and has forty finns?
  4:13pm Caryn:

I gotta agree with feud coach, though. Honey badger would kick ass. You'd go for the testicles and Andy would be down for the count. Frangry would be more difficult...
@DJKG: of course, there is the whole Finn-Ugric connection between Finns and Hungarians. Or they could be signed to a Finnish lable?
Avatar 4:13pm DJKG:

feral, not sure what you're askin'. undor was the superlong track.
  4:13pm glenn:

a thunder bay school bus.
  4:14pm still b/p:

So it's undor-where issue?
  4:14pm Feral_Parsnip:

@ Kurt - kthx. was konfus.
Avatar 4:14pm DJKG:

hi, 37!
  4:15pm The Yardburds:

Ovur undor sideways down.
  4:17pm Caryn:

Checked, yep, Undor is signed to a Finnish record label.
  4:21pm Adam:

Nice to hear Hoffman Estates on the air! I've been listening to that record all week.
  4:23pm 37:

thank god i can stomach this again...thanks to the book "love goes to building on fire"!
  4:25pm Caryn:

Ended up on a list of Finnish metal bands. Funny how the names range from OTT ones like Anal Desecrating Penis Mutilation (really?) to low-key ones like Asianajaja, which just means "lawyer". Ooh, Lawyer... How very heavy metal!
Avatar 4:26pm DJKG:

lawyer - ha! kind of an awesome name for a metal band.
  4:28pm Caryn:

Well, lawyers clearly are Satan's minions, so in that sense it's an excellent name for a metal band.
  4:28pm glenn:

black metal vegan lawyer.
  4:29pm Satan's Minions:

Hey, watch it, or we'll sue. Comparing us to lawyers?
  4:31pm german rodriguez:

we can hear you, in case
  4:32pm JT:

  4:33pm slugluv1313:

from what i understand UNDOR is on a Finnish label, and that Finnish is like the ONLY language on the planet that is even remotely related to Hungarian (learned the latter when i was TRYING to learn the Hungarian language!) and YES! the whole thing can be a total lie! who knows, perhaps UNDOR are really shy, polite young women from São Paolo?!?!!
  4:34pm kat330:

Well, see I missed Talking Heads in my continuing accountant screw up damage control....but anyway, isn't Carmichael studying to be or is a lawyer?
  4:38pm slugluv1313:

hey! a dear friend of mine really IS a vegan lawyer -- practices in Seattle and she is freakin' awesome -- "animal litigation front" :) -- i do not think she is into black metal though . . . btw, UNDOR means "disgust, loathing, abhorrence" in Hungarian (ahhhhh i LOVE our *special* sense of AESTHETICS!)
  4:38pm Carmichael:

Kat, I'm a government contract law expert, but I'm not one of Satan's minions. No JD, just an MA and a lifetime of perusing and negotiating the fine print of all things bureaucratic. Life is exciting in the public sector.
Avatar 4:39pm DJKG:

slug, yeah, the finns use the whole hungarian thing to claim their not scandinavian!
  4:41pm Caryn:

@slugluv: well, there are other languages too, like Estonian, Sami, and smaller, near-extinct languages like Mari, Komi, Khanty, Voro, Livonian, Erzya, Moksha, Mansi, Udmurtian... Good thing I studied this in college.
  4:41pm glenn:

vegan black metal chef. nutritious AND hilarious.
  4:41pm kat330:

BTW, Caryn, we may be traveling to see J.T.'s family sometime this year. Do you know Hyvinkaa?
Avatar 4:42pm DJKG:

glenn, i <3 that guy!
  4:43pm Caryn:

@kat: know the place, but have never been
  4:43pm kat330:

Carm, guvmint AND a lawyer....I think there may be a special ring of hell reserved for the likes of you! ;)
  4:46pm Carmichael:

He he ... and with military and post-graduate college in my background, I've been feeding at the public trough for most of my life now!
  4:47pm kat330:

With accountants and bankers ahead of you....
  4:47pm G:

For info on the idea of a Finnish Hungarian language linkage, see for example:

  4:48pm Tim Thomas:

I told everybody government was too big.
  4:49pm Caryn:

Or: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finno-Ugric_languages
  4:49pm Stanley:

I've just come back from the pub and this music is just perfect.
  4:50pm kat330:

This Finno-Hungarian language dingus: This is deja vu all over again.
  4:52pm Parq:

Wow, the Necks are really something (regular Dan Bodah listener). This is gorgeous.
  4:53pm Caryn:

kat, decided to google Hyvinkää, and they seem to love appropriating famous names for their own uses. For instance, they have a whole part of town (including a nature reserve, sports centre and spa) called Sveitsi ("Switzerland") and an annual music festival called Woodstock.
  4:55pm kat330:

J.T. just arrived home and will probably reply, but when I asked him about the Woodstock, that was news to him. I remember going to a great natatorium in the Switzerland area.
  4:57pm Caryn:

The full name is Willatehtaan Woodstock. Apparently, the local Lions Club organises it.
  4:58pm Caryn:

kat, is the Switzerland area at least hilly? Do they make watches or good chocolate?
  4:59pm J.T.:

Hi everybody! Looks like I missed some good toons, but I'm sure it'll keep up! And yeah, Finland is just as bad repurposing names as the US is. We have Warsaw somewhere close by here in midwest USA.
  5:00pm Caryn:

www.woodstock.fi will tell you all about the festival
  5:00pm kat330:

I don't recall any hills, but it's J.T.'s hometown and he'd know better.
  5:02pm J.T.:

Sveitsi is 'finland hilly' meaning it's a tiny bump in a mostly flat area.
  5:03pm kat330:

Besides the indoor water park, I mostly remember how quiet our walks in the woods were (in May), never catching sight of woodland creatures or hearing birdsong. Around here, the woods are bustling with fauna and birdsong even in colder months.
  5:03pm Caryn:

@J.T.: so like a supermodel's chest?
  5:03pm slugluv1313:

omg -- that VEGAN BLACK METAL CHEF!!!!!!! i think i am in *love* . . . !
  5:04pm Satan's Minion Carmichael:

My computer's broke now. I think I'm getting Hot 107.1.
  5:05pm J.T.:

Thanks for the link! Never did anything in Hyvinkaa really, grew up 50 yards from Helsinki and moved back soon as I managed.
  5:05pm Caryn:

@kat: that seems weird, there's always fauna around here and even in Helsinki... Of course, Hyvinkää has been proclaimed a "Safe Community". Maybe they did away with the animals as part of that.
  5:05pm BT:

Re the Chain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeV4REO4dTE
  5:06pm kat330:

Heh, I asked Juha if it had anything to do with Chernobyl.
  5:06pm Caryn:

Carmichael has apparently become an out and proud member of Satan's forces. Out of the infernal closet!
  5:07pm kat330:

Yes, the Mac seems to be coming out of left field, not that I mind this particular tune.
  5:07pm Satan's Minion Carmichael:

I wouldn't blame this incarnation of Fleetwood Mac on Chernobyl. The Mayan calendar, perhaps.
  5:07pm slugluv1313:

@ Caryn, THANK YOU!!!! yes, MANY languages sadly almost extinct! unfortunately did not study this in college -- but have learned a lot over the years, often through music (have an amazing CD set called "Voices of Forgotten Worlds")
  5:07pm kat330:

And now Bacharach -- what did fair listeners think of Costello's tribute?
  5:09pm painted from memory:

is a guilty pleasure of mine...
  5:09pm BodegaMan:

hallo hallo DJ KG, feels like I haven't had a listen since 2011. Show's in fine form today.
  5:11pm Caryn:

@kat: considering how much Bacharach Costello has covered, I think you need to be more specific.
  5:16pm kat330:

Oh, I thought he'd kept it to one album. I love EC, but wasn't so pleased by his covers.
  5:16pm Aaron Burr:

Go west, young man!
  5:16pm Carmichael:

The bug-eyed monster from planet Hate married Diana Krall and sings Bacharach. The irony isn't lost on me, although I quite enjoy his original peak period stuff.
Avatar 5:17pm DJKG:

bt, thx. sorry i didn't get to the track.
  5:17pm Caryn:

Yeah, I think it was one studio album, but then there's been the live stuff and the talk, so I wasn't sure if you meant the album or some of the other stuff.
  5:18pm Horace Greeley:

@Aaron: WTF!@!!11!!!!
  5:19pm Carmichael:

He just completed a tour (out here, anyway) that included a bunch of Bacharach and others that I don't believe are yet recorded.
  5:21pm Caryn:

Recent Costello hasn't really wowed me. Like his earlier stuff better. He was good with Springsteen, Grohl, Little Steven, Thomas & Kanal doing "London Calling" though.
Avatar 5:21pm DJKG:

costello has been doing bacharach since the live stiffs record circa 1978 (great version of "i just don't know what to do with myself")
  5:22pm J.T.:

I like Elvis, but I guess I was always more of a fan of the other Stiff artists/bands like Wreckless Eric, Larry Wallis, Nick Lowe Ian Dury and that lot (Live Stiffs was a great album)
  5:22pm glenn:

i prefer when elvis c. covers george jones. his version of "it's been a good year for the roses" is fantastic.
  5:23pm kat330:

When I saw him at the Louisville Palace in 2000 he sang no Bacharach as I recall. My fave was always "Anyone Who Had a Heart," the Warwick version.
  5:23pm painted from memory:

is a collaboration not a tribute
  5:23pm J.T.:

@DJKG -- exactly (no I didn't see your note as I was typing mine)!
  5:24pm Caryn:

@DJKG: he's done a lot live, sure. But I think only studio album. Though a second one is probably coming soon.
  5:24pm Richard from Venezuela:

Hi Kurt and all the listeners.
  5:25pm Caryn:

D'oh! that should be "only ONE"...
  5:25pm kat330:

I've always favored songs that change up the rhythm midstream as well as flipping between major and minor keys.
  5:25pm The Damned:

EC also did a great cover of "Neat Neat Neat" back in the day...
  5:27pm Carmichael:

@DJKG: Yikes, his love affair with Bacharach goes back that far? Considering his own material and his cultural stance, that comes as a surprise to me. I did see him sing a slow solo piano version of Accidents Will Happen that put a whole new spin on the song.
  5:27pm kat330:

One of my fave EC songs is "Shipbuilding" -- such a sexy song counter to its subject matter.
  5:27pm glenn:

everything in modulation, i say.
Avatar 5:27pm DJKG:

y'know, last time i played elvis c on the air (in a different time slot) the playlist yelled at me!
  5:28pm Caryn:

@kat: YES, "Shipbuilding"! I love love love that song!
Avatar 5:28pm DJKG:

kat - shipbuilding is another fine cover by ec!
  5:28pm Carmichael:

At least we're consistent, Kurt!
  5:29pm Maurice Worm:

quite rude!
  5:30pm Clive Langer:

  5:30pm kat330:

Yeah, dig the way the trumpet comes in like bubbles coming to the surface from a dive.
  5:31pm J.T.:

Being a (hi)cultural ignoramus, I thought Burt hit the highpoint with "The Blob"... but then again, I always like Ringo's songs best of all the Beatles.
  5:31pm Mark in VT:

getting close to 6pm. The shut ups must be in the studio by now getting ready for their dumb show. How is the feud going?
Avatar 5:31pm DJKG:

oops! i thought shipbuilding was ec covering robert wyatt. other way around. memory fades...
  5:32pm kat330:

And I'm not a big fan of the trumpet usually -- except the Bach trumpet.
Avatar 5:32pm DJKG:

the feud is floundering. i need help managing it. plus i'd kind of prefer they not know about the feud so i don't have to do it interactively!
  5:33pm wiki:

According to Clive Langer, he'd written the tune for Robert Wyatt but wasn't happy with the lyrics that he had written himself. Langer played the tune to Costello at a party hosted by Nick Lowe, and within days Costello had written lyrics he described as "the best lyrics I've ever written".
  5:35pm Carmichael:

Hugh Masakela is one of my trumpet exceptions.
  5:36pm Caryn:

That's kinda like David Bowie's lyrics to the French melody that was then given different lyrics by Paul Anka and became "My Way". It's fun to hear the Bowie version: instantly recognisable melody, unexpected words.
  5:36pm kat330:

They are great lyrics, but I've never been sure how well they fit the languorous music. I mean, I include Shipbuilding on my list of "in the mood" songs.
  5:38pm Caryn:

@kat: hell, I include Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees" in my list of "in the mood" songs, and the lyrics really don't fit into that.
  5:38pm kat330:

I suppose "diving for pearls" could fit that mood, but not the main thrust, ahem, of the lyrics.
  5:38pm glenn:

i love trumpet, and hate saxophone. really really hate saxophone. * ducks and covers*
  5:38pm ba ba boo e:

call ins to their show to sabotage.
  5:39pm Saboteur:

Do a bad call in to their show.

  5:41pm Caryn:

@Saboteur: exactly! What with Spike & Jenna and their ilk, a bad call would fit right in. A really good call might rattle them, though...
  5:41pm kat330:

@glenn: Really? Really, really hate? I could see how it could be played to be hated, but man, can it be played to be LOVED as well. The trumpet is mostly too blunt a sound for me. I like the low, soft brass, like French horn, or the soft woodwinds like oboe and bassoon. I blame Profofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" for that.
Avatar 5:41pm DJKG:

glenn - i hate saxophones too. but so many of my favorite musicians play it!

ba ba boo e, i cannot publicly condone your excellent idea.
  5:41pm JT:

KG can open the feud by prank calling them... the call is coming.... FROM INSIDE THE STATION
  5:42pm kat330:

[s.b. ProKofiev, of course]
  5:43pm glenn:

what can i say. i also love the accordion.
  5:43pm Caryn:

@kat: good lord, we're agreeing on everything now! Totally agree on all your brass and woodwind opinions.
Avatar 5:43pm DJKG:

YES!! call in and be intelligent and engaging! they'll never know what hit them!
  5:44pm kat330:

Well, I know I'm J.T. soul mate, and on an earlier playlist you claimed to be his, so well, do the math.
  5:44pm J.T. (Finn):

I like trumpet on Miles Davis' Bitches Brew and Saxophone on Wreckless Eric records... all I can come up with on short notice.
  5:45pm kat330:

But having said what I did about the trumpet, please listen to that bit in "Shipbuilding" -- will give you the shivers if you let yourself be taken under by the tune.

@kat: I think there's a "Parent Trap"-like long lost twins thing going on... That or one of us has ESP powers and has unwittingly contacted the other.
  5:46pm Saboteur:

"call in and be intelligent and engaging"

  5:46pm J.T. (Finn):

I take it this isn't Warren Smith of Ubangi Stomp & Uranium Rock fame!
  5:47pm Caryn:

@kat: damn right about "Shipbuilding". But you did say that it was "mostly too blunt a sound", so that leaves room for occasional exceptions.

Kurt could actually do some loud construction in and around the studio they will be in. Get a saws all and a hilti hammer and loud away.

Can't rule anything out since it was Philip K. Dick (speaking of Elvis C.) that was responsible for J.T. and me meeting. An old tag of mine is: When finally their minds' eyes met, it was love at second sight.
  5:53pm kat330:

Kurt, you are soooooo cool -- thanks for abiding us!
  5:54pm J.T. (Finn):

Good move, Kurt! Thanks for a great show.
Avatar 5:55pm DJKG:

  5:55pm Carmichael:

Smooth move, Kurt. Thanks for today. Hail Satan, everyone!
  5:56pm kat330:

I'll save your soul, Carm!! :)
  5:57pm Caryn:

Macchiavellian plot development, Kurt! Sun Tzu would be proud.
  5:59pm Caryn:

Satan approves your skills, Kurt, and will have Carmichael draw up the proper legal documents to hire you into his minions.
  5:59pm Moon Tzu:
