A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hello Trouble and listeners. Your London correspondent spent lat evening in a freezing darkened church listening to Tim Hecker play the organ for a Ravedeath album show. Strange/boring/exhilarating/painful/soothing in equal measures.

jamsie Just the time of year for Seville oranges. Thick peel I trust. Have you considered grapefruit marmalade? Works well.
  10:21am
Cecile:

mmmm, Brian sounds lovely.
I saw Howl's Moving Castle this weekend. Beautiful, funny and kind of deranged. The plot seemed preposterous until I looked up the plot of the original book on the 'net.

I am unreasonably excited about the Borrowers movie Miyazaki is directing...
  10:25am
Caryn:

@Cecile: the Borrowers movie was really good, if not completely faithful to the books. But I don't require movie adaptations to be totally faithful, as long as they are good. And it was, so go forth and watch!
  10:25am
erella!:

Thank you trouble. Love the show today.

Mike East:

I got really into Miyazaki a few years ago. My daughter loves Howl's Moving Castle - and Ponyo. Princess Mononoke was a little scary for her at this point - but that's my favorite.
  10:29am

I like that one a lot, Mike East, and have a soft spot for Kiki's Delivery Service.

Haven't seen Ponyo yet.

I borrowed a copy of a DVD of Svankmajer films from a friend. It got stolen when my house got broken into. I found him another copy, but now I'm afraid to borrow it from him again....!

Jan Hammer's doing movie music now? Cool. He was such an essential part of the Mahavishnu Orchestra -- Clay Pigeon will back me up on that one.

I loved that Svanmayer one with the rocks. THat's why I borrowed it. But now I think I will have to watch it online or something.
  10:42am

For me it was definitely the audio as well as the visuals. With Svankmajer. Punch & Judy had a perfect mix of music & sound design.

@Cecile and Mike: Ponyo is great. I watched the latest one, Arrietty, he other day. Enjoyable but not as good as Ponyo.

Svanmayer's Alice is brilliant. I love Punch and Judy too. 1966!

Svankmajer films are avail for streaming on Netflix, along with Quay Brothers.
  10:50am
Mike East:

@Adrian - I'll have to check that one out. Have you seen Castle of Cagliostro? Its not really for kids, per se, but my daughter loves that one too.
  10:52am
Jeremy:

I first discovered Svankmajer through the Quay Bros., who were his pupils. He's still making films, btw, the most recent one was playing when I was in Prague last year, but I couldn't go! Ah well, it wasn't subtitled anyway...

  10:57am
Caryn:

Since no-one has mentioned them yet, gotta put my votes behind "Nausicaä and the Valley of the Wind", "Spirited Away" and "Totoro". Oh, and "Porco Rosso". Man, Miyazaki doesn't make bad films. Neither does Svankmajer. Though seeing his Alice when I was 12 was a bit disturbing... Anyone else seen Svankmajer's version of "The Fall of the House of Usher"?
  10:59am
indonesian:

Um, "in our culture" we do use CDs and MP3s. Cassettes haven't been seen in Indonesia since the 80s. Actually, you'll find that Indonesians are faster adaptors of new technology than Westeners. Every second person there practically upgrades their cellphone on a monthly basis. So there. We do know how to use computers. Thanks.
  11:00am
Mike East:

@Caryn - I agree those are all great. There was a Totoro doll in the last Toy Story movie. I thought that was a pretty cool shout out.

  11:03am
Mike East:

I love the foley effects in all the Svankmajer films I've seen. The sound of the devil's mouth clacking in Faust still gives me the creeps.
  11:03am
Caryn:

The 2011 release of "Requiem for a Village" is awesome. It comes with 4 short films by the same director and the essays are fascinating. Paintings are quite lovely too.
  11:04am
Adrian in London:

@Mike: No, I haven't seen that one. They're always on Film Four, a digital channel over here, but with the English dubbing. I prefer the Japanese soundtrack so tend to get them on DVD. Too many things to watch/see/read etc!
  11:08am
Mike East:

@Adrian - so true. The Castle of Cagliostro music soundtrack is pretty great. It has a kind of 70's funk/caper movie feel to it.
  11:09am
Caryn:

@Mike: oh man, "Faust". You're right about the devil. When I was younger, Svankmajer's "Jabberwocky" freaked me out. I think it was the maggots that did it.
  11:10am
zoran:

Great show Trouble & Ben!! ---Ben, any info on where to find screening room dvd/streams? I was lucky enough to see the one w/ Standish Lawder on amazon before the license was pulled... Only thing I can find has them for $175 per episode on dvd.
  11:13am
Mike East:

@Caryn - I forgot about Jabberwocky! - I saw that when I was REAL young (my older sister's were watching it) and I remember being terrified - but at the same time, compelled to watch it.
  11:16am

Oh yeah @Caryn, "Nausicaä and the Valley of the Wind" and "Spirited Away" are *amazing* films. But "Howl's Moving Castle" is not as good as the book.

Been out and just got in. Was Requiem for a Village about somewhere in Suffolk, came out in 70s. Think I used to work with the cinematographers wife. I remember her talking about it at the time.
  11:24am
Caryn:

@Ike: yep, not as good as the book (but then again, I LOVE the book), but still a very enjoyable film.
@zoran: I find it rather appropriate that "Asparagus" used to be shown as a double bill with Lynch's "Eraserhead". That would be a movie-going experience that would make you go hmm...
  11:26am
Caryn:

@Brian: yep, a village in Suffolk. Came out in 1975.

I think the main lesson is: never go to an isolated research station, period. In the history of films and tv, it has never worked out well. From "McGuyver" to "The X Files" to "Lost", isolated research station spells doom.
