Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23am
Joe McG:

Sorry, cheri, we're up in the small studio now and the record library is not accessible, so I won't be playing requests.
  12:25am
G:

Do people know the 1982 Material track was one of Whitney H's first recordings as a lead singer?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26am
Joe McG:

Now they do! Thanks, G.
  12:29am
G:

I often look up artists I don't know on playlists while the song's playing. Material started as a would-be progrock project and evolved into urban music in the early 80s. I was surprised to see Whitney H's name as lead singer on one of the tracks. Yep, sounded like here alright, duh!
  12:30am
Destroit:

Keep moving Joe. A gigantic hello to Holly. Touching down on Raleigh on feb 28th,
  12:31am
T-Zero:

Thanks for that info G. Was in another room and that Whitney was being played, so had to look at the playlist.

D. Blumin:

Yup, I'm down here in the library - untangling all the chairs down here...
  12:36am
Destroit:

Blumin is a weirdo, love em.
  12:36am
Holly in NC:

Hey Destroit!!! Gigantic hello, we shall have to plan an amazing welcome. Right now it's horrid here, 25 degrees F and gusty as hell.

@Joe - I may be the only person in the world who doesn't like the Supremes, period. And it's totally Diana's fault.
  12:38am
T-Zero:

Heh, I'd take that temp, Holly, it's only 2 here.
  12:38am
Holly in NC:

Cissy's daughter, Dionne Warwick's cousin, Aretha's goddaughter. Royalty.

Holly in NC:

@T-Zero - Where are you?
  12:43am
T-Zero:

  12:44am
Destroit:

Care less about the temperature, want to feel the people and the food. Holly, tell me what's up!
  12:44am
miss cheri:

i hate to trouble you joe,,but during your next mic break could you please give me a little shout out,,thank you joe..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48am
Joe McG:

@Holly: Thanks for the correction! I always get that wrong. As for the Supremes, I don't hate Diana or anything, I just seem to play the post-DR albums more often.
  12:50am
Destroit:

Move it. Grinding, crunchy,
  12:55am
Holly in NC:

@T-Zero - every Ohio ex-pat I've ever met has been slightly insane. And we immediately become great friends ;-)

@Destroit - Lots up! After Joe's show, leave a comment at http://hollisterbanister.blogspot.com & I'll send you my e-mail so we don't clog Joe's board! Probably not 'til tomorrow, I'm already wildly multitasking
  12:57am
miss cheri:

i'm loving your show so far joe,,i guess you don't do shout outs either,,
  12:57am
T-Zero:

@Holly. Not a native buckeye, but still crazy ;)
  12:57am
Holly in NC:

This Conway song is awesome

Got ya Holly,
  1:03am
Holly in NC:

I have never heard this Loraxy Roy Clark song before, I LOVE it!
  1:05am
Destroit:

Old dog blue is great.
  1:08am
Holly in NC:

Irony here - part of my multitasking is baitng a havaheart trap to capture the critters (likely possums) who kept 2 people & 3 cats up ALL NIGHT with their antics in our ctawlspace. Somehow Joe is channeling my life, scary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09am
Joe McG:

Yes, I've gone on a critter binge for some reason!

@steve: If, and only if! *Marmalade* Kitty comes around! :)
  1:19am
erella in toronto:

Joe, is it possible the previous owners of your dog were fans of this show? The german shepherd was called Hobo I think. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=banXT6azA-4
  1:20am
Holly in NC:

@Possums, yes, and if you'd please curl up into tight heat saving fuzzy balls and go to friggin' sleep we won't have any problems. BTW, dinner is served - peanut butter, canteloupe, & sardines, go wild. And then to sleep.
  1:20am
Matt from Springfield:

SSS Records! Sorry I missed that one--love that country label, will def check out the Archive!
  1:21am
Possums:

We're looking for a warmer spot, and ALL FREAKIN NIGHT we can't find a good one. Dommage. We'd take the spare bed.
  1:22am
erella in toronto:

Oops. I think the dog's name is London not Hobo.
It is possible your dog's previous family liked that show.
  1:22am
Matt from Springfield:

Yeaaaaa Joe!!!
(I thought when I first heard this title track, that Mike McKean used this as one of his influences for his Spinal Tap "David St. Hubbins" vocal! :)
  1:22am
Destroit:

I'm invading your house on the 28th, sardines,PB,lemon, cilantro electric. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24am
Joe McG:

@erella: I don't know, maybe! We loved the guy no matter what he was called.
  1:24am
Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: Such an assortment of foods reminds me of what my Dad told me he and his brothers used to eat: peanut butter, lettuce and mayo sandwiches! (At least he claims they used to eat those!)
  1:24am
Holly in NC:

Oh my gosh! Tears For Fears 'Mad World" totally bit this Cat Stevens song - did anyone else hear that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24am
Joe McG:

Hey, Matt! Never thought about the Cat Stevens-Spinal Tap connection. Further investigation!
  1:25am
erella in toronto:

If you're still doing songs about dogs, what about Nilsson's Me and My Arrow? Black Eyed Dog - Nick Drake, Shake Dog Shake - The Cure
  1:26am
Destroit:

I'm down with nick drake, jus' sayin
  1:26am
Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: Listen to the Flower People, baby!!
Of course there's the Youngbloods, the Lemon Pipers and other psych-pop influences, but the stilted delivery of David reminds me of the early Cat Stevens.
  1:27am
david:

go Yusuf! gotta check out those early records.
  1:27am
Matt from Springfield:

@Destroit: And WHY would anyone not be down with Nick Drake??? ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28am
Joe McG:

@erella: Ooh, "Black Eyed Dog" can't just be played with dog songs. That song's too intense, makes my hair stand up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29am
Joe McG:

@david: I really recommend "Matthew & Son" and "New Masters." The UK reissues from 2003 also have a whole bunch of nice bonus tracks. I'm also partial to the soundtrack to "Howard and Maude"!
  1:29am
Destroit:

Ya know Matt, some people just suck. :)
  1:30am
miss cheri:

joe i hope you have a wonderful valentines day,, and no shout outs either? night for real.
  1:30am
Matt from Springfield:

First saw Harold and Maude last year. Love the soundtrack, and the movie! I rec to any FMU fan!
@Destroit: Yeah, true, let's just ignore those people! :)
  1:31am
Holly in NC:

No spare beds at the inn, possums, sorry. Be grateful for your dinner!
Best peanut butter sandwich = seedless rye toast, pb, and sliced cornichons. No lie. Don't knock it 'til you try it!
  1:32am
Matt from Springfield:

@Destroit: "...cause while the sinners sin, the children play"
  1:32am
david:

Thanks Joe. From what I've heard of Matthew & Son it seems on par with the Bee Gee's "1st" album
  1:33am
Matt from Springfield:

Re: M. Dolor: He's Mr. DYINGLY Sad!!! :D
  1:36am
Matt from Springfield:

Oh Lawdy, novelty song integrating all aspects of "chicken hawk" into it!
@Holly: Sounds interesting--do you mean cornichons like cucumbers, or pickles?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36am
Joe McG:

@Matt: ha ha! @david: Good comparison, both are in the vein.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39am
Joe McG:

If anybody can tell me where "Slauson Shuffle" comes from, I'd be much obliged.
  1:42am
david:

Snuffleupagus should do his own version of "do the slauson shuffle"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46am
Joe McG:

Snuffalslauson Snuffle.
  1:46am
erella in toronto:

Harold and Maude is a fabulous movie. One of my all time favourites.
  1:46am
Holly in NC:

@Matt - the wee pickled cucumbers found either in pricey French jars or somewhat less pricey in bulk in deli areas with a certain level of aspiration -down here readily available at Whole Foods, Harris Teeter & the better Krogers.
NOT sweet gherkins!!!
Or dills or 1/2 sours.
  1:47am
Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: NEVER sweet gherkins! I don't even know why they have those!! ;)
I'll look for those next time I'm at Whole Foods.
  1:48am
erella in toronto:

Hey now that Whitney Houston has died, would you play her first recorded bit on a Material album? It is a Hugh Hopper song with Archie Shepp playing sax. Robert Wyatt later recorded a version of the same song

Love Big Country, I wish there was more "80s Celtic" genre music out there--even 70s Celtic music, like the Horslips will do...

  1:51am

Joe, I have been searching high & low for the Cowsills "Covered Wagon" since you played it 2 (?) weeks ago, and I've been totally thwarted. Never comped & noone's, er, sharing. >:-(
  1:52am
Destroit:

You have to find mclures pickles, and you will, 28th, quality food.
  1:52am
Matt from Springfield:

I wasn't around at the time of Big Country, but they've always been a retro fav of mine! And yes, with only one song in my playlist they can sometimes be neglected!
  1:52am
david:

holy bagpipe guitars
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53am
Joe McG:

@Holly: I'm pretty sure that a label in the UK recently released the last Cowsills LP "On My Side" on CD and I think it's a bonus track on there. Actually, I haven't checked, so maybe I'm totally wrong! But it may be worth trying.

Very cool little instro

But WHY do you move into the smaller Studio B during Marathons? Is it because that's where the 800 number line is located? (I thought someone mentioned that).
  2:10am
erella in toronto:

Wow, I wasn't listening then! Great to see it. That will teach me to miss part of the show!

This song is causing my pet snake to stir.

T-Zero:

@Joe McG: That song by Esmeray, did the Italian group Fun Fun also do it on the album Double Fun? I know I have it somewhere in Italian but can't remember on what album. (I can't play my vinyl to check as no turntable at present.)
  2:21am

@Joe McG: I've been trying to figure out what the English version is...

Bonjour Joe and everyone. Matthew & Son first album I bought with my own money from paper round in MONO. Still sounds good.
  2:23am
Kenzo:

Man, I missed Fields of Fire....haven't heard that song in decades. I think I have the music video recorded from TV on a VHS tape in a box...

Joe, another thing: I didn't see the Premium Warehouse on this year's premiums page; are you still giving away a Warehouse item with a Mouse pledge?

Townshend's synth sounds always get me
  2:44am
T-Zero:

@ Holly: Jesahel! Thank you! I have it by Ciao Fellini on the '80 Mi Da'Tanto album and as Jezahel by Shirley Bassey. I KNEW I had it somewhere both in Italian and English but couldn't remember the English song title. I could kiss you. That's been bugging me for days since I heard this played earlier on FMU (forget now what show).

It's strange but pleasant to listen to your show while fully awake (due to the hour, not the content).

Joe McG:

Hey, 12539, thanks for the info about the Slauson. East coast boy, only been to L.A. a couple of times. Apparently I need to dance the Slauson next time I'm there!
