Hello Doug

LJfW If you remember back to last week; this is what Luscious Jackson are up to now. Synchronicity or sommat like that.

  8:50am listener james from westwood:

good friday all! will be mostly away from the keys & proofreading all day, but will have the mighty drummer stream on through the whole sordid affair!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51am Doug Schulkind:

I went to college w/Luscious Jackson's keyboard player. (Which makes me way cool.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53am Doug Schulkind:

We will endeavor to distract as much as possible, LJFW.
  8:55am glenn:

huh. i went to high school with the star of jag, plus a bunch of pro hockey players. i'm not sure what that makes me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57am Doug Schulkind:

@Glenn
Really? Get ooot!
  8:57am ndbob:

morning Doug and everyone!
  8:57am glenn:

and i just want to say to everybody out there -- if you don't support wfmu, you support child pornography.
  8:58am listener james from westwood:

the "what not to wear" guy was my year at boston college. i am certain my ensemble of work t-shirts and frayed dockers would give him the vapors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58am Doug Schulkind:

Morning ndbob!
  9:00am listener james from westwood:

howdy ndbob, brian, glenn, and doug!
  9:00am Brian en Angleterre:

What is this music, Doug, been listening but forgot to check the names. Polyphonics?
  9:01am still b/p:

Hello, Wizard of Ooze and residents of Drummerald City.
  9:01am holland oats:

drummersome!
  9:01am Brian en Angleterre:

Heard tell that Huey Lewis went to our primary skool. How can that be?
  9:04am listener james from westwood:

could his family have been in the diplomatic corps? or merely a bunch of ramblers. perhaps they wanted a new drug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am Doug Schulkind:

Hellooooo Holland Oats!
  9:06am Brian en Angleterre:

No idea James. Did you see the first comment?
  9:08am holland oats:

facebook mystery pic: vinicius? (longshot)
  9:09am fishmonkeystew:

I once made a salad for Paul Newman. And a coffee for Brian Dennehy. Oh, and I gave directions to Lisa Loeb.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

Extra credit for guessing BEFORE the show starts, but that is incorrect.

Everyone follow the playlist and try to guess who the mystery performer is: on.fb.me...
  9:10am glenn:

lisa loeb's pretty cute, i gotta say.
  9:10am listener james from westwood:

yes indeed! hadn't read it yet (back and forth from computer). good to read they're gearing up; thanks! wonder what advantages this site has over kickstarter. will have to dig further....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Doug Schulkind:

Not nearly as cute as Paul Newman, however. Good morning FishMS!
  9:12am still b/p:

I served Swedish meatballs to Sven Nykvist about 22 years ago and shook General Westmoreland's hand about thirty years ago.
  9:13am fishmonkeystew:

Glenn, I have to agree. Paul was way cool and Dennehy was an arrogant ass. Good morning, Doug and all!
  9:13am Brian en Angleterre:

Who's Lisa Loeb? A psychoanalyist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Doug Schulkind:

My mother usta make Swedish meatballs with grape jelly and chili sauce.
  9:16am fishmonkeystew:

Ha, Brian! Nope, a 1990's musician.
  9:16am glenn:

really? dennehy was doing a bunch of theatre here last year, and everybody says he was a great guy. then again, people do lie to newspapers. he's definitely a great actor.
  9:19am fishmonkeystew:

Maybe I caught him on a bad day. I don't know. He lives locally, and I've heard of many run-ins between he and the locals. He actually pulled into my friend's driveway, got out and blatantly made fun of her Smart Car. Though truth be told, her car IS pretty funny.
  9:19am still b/p:

Noooooo, she didn't.
  9:20am annie:

yes i am, but i've been busy saving the world from bad food!! good morning all!
  9:23am Parq:

FMS, gave her directions for what? Hah, y'all ah'm settin' here with mah chaw a terbakky a'lisnin' to this heyar farst set.
  9:23am annie:

hey ndbob, i got your email....ruminating on it..
  9:24am BodegaMan:

my holy grail of celebrity sightings is working out with Hulk Hogan once. In his Hollywood Hogan days. I've met others, but this is the only story I repeat.
  9:24am seang:

My goose is cooked!
  9:24am ndbob:

Thanks Annie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

Citing lots of friends in and out of wrestling, Hulk Hogan came out the other day in support of gay rights.
  9:26am fishmonkeystew:

Hi Parq! Directions to Rt 84 in NE CT. She and some of her crew got lost in CT while trying to take the scenic route. They stopped at the cafe where I worked, got a coffee and she asked for directions. I have no idea how they ended up in Pomfret, CT, cause that's pretty much in the middle of nowhere.
  9:26am Bob in Charlottesville:

Smokey & the Rhythm Riders sure knew a lot more different chords and ways to put them together than any cowpokes I've ever heard.
  9:27am BodegaMan:

Doug, Hogan was a very sweet man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Doug Schulkind:

Riding the strings, Bob in C!
  9:30am ndbob:

Ah Esmereldy.. ever see the 1940 movie "Grand Ole Opry" with her, Roy Acuff, and Uncle Dave Macon?
  9:30am Bob in Charlottesville:

That would be Terry Riley, not me.
  9:30am jill:

Good morning Drummer and drummettes. Here's a site for telling dull stories about interactions with celebrities: http://rockandrolltedium.tumblr.com/page/4
  9:30am glenn:

hah. i thought annie said she was urinating on ndbob's email. my bad.
  9:30am texas scott:

Hiya Jill!
  9:43am dc pat:

did you all know that gay people don't exist in Tennessee? Should be official soon.
  9:43am Parq:

By the way, who was America's tallest dead cowboy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

You make a strong point, Parq.
  9:45am glenn:

i don't know. is dennis rodman dead?
  9:46am still b/p:

Real one or in motion pitchers?
  9:47am chris in durban:

  9:47am glenn:

i had to google dana loesch. she's not as cute as lisa loeb.
  9:48am Brian en Angleterre:

Parq they are all the same height when demised.
  9:48am ndbob:

heya chris
  9:49am Brian en Angleterre:

fms did you tell LL you were a magician and he turned into a motel. Oh the old ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

Nice timing, Chris in Durban. Dorothy Masuka closes out this set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Doug Schulkind:

This fabulous Dorothy Masuka record is available at the mighty Electric Jive: bit.ly...

Bob in Charlottesville, that was funny.
  10:08am Brian en Angleterre:

Do you remember the scene in 'In the Mood for Love' when Tony Leung is staring t'wards the camera his hair greased, barely perceptable moving. Then he breaks into a faint smile, beautifully lit scene.
  10:13am Brian en Angleterre:

Pathe/Marconi & EMI, both France & UK trying to grab as much as they can from west Africa. If they did not who would?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

OK, I'll turn of the mic now.
  10:15am Van in DC:

Did I hear a cough?
  10:18am Van in DC:

Thought that perhaps this was the first time these guys have been played at WFMU. Nope. Doug of course played them back in 2004. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Doug Schulkind:

Why, no, Van. A...cough...you (cough) heard? Really?
  10:19am Van in DC:

Barely audible Doug, no worries, I, uh, only barely heard it because, uh, I've got headphones on ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Doug Schulkind:

I had headphones on too, and heard it loud and clear. Believe it or not, I am STILL getting used to this home studio set-up. Back at WFMU, a nice little light would illuminate when the mic was on. Here in Studio P (Pittsburgh), not so much.

Cry me a river...
  10:25am old wife:

If you have a bad cough, you need a Monongahealer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

I'll a gainy one.
  10:28am Van in DC:

How about a nice little ON AIR light for you? :)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

If I had the extra $125, I'd just pledge it to WFMU! (But it's cute!)
  10:33am monica:

been listenin, am jammin! hello to all the friday morning irregulars. you too, maestro!
  10:34am glenn:

i'm pretty sure your daughter would willingly sacrifice shoes and food and stuff so you could have that nice light.
  10:35am Artie:

shades of 'Silver Bells'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Doug Schulkind:

Pay close attention to the lyrics in the following song, a cautionary tale from Zambia.

Hello Monica! Are you saying my listeners need Metamucil?

@Glenn
She kinda already is :-(
  10:38am northguineahills:

I've been out of work for 7 months now, so no multi-mouse pledges this marathon, just a tee-shirt. However, once I've been working a few months, I'll donate belatedly.
  10:39am holland oats:

hippie rampage!
  10:39am Carmichael:

Good day, peeps. Start of 3 day holiday and no school for the kiddos next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

To each, according to their need to rock, from each, according to his/her ability, Northguineahills.

Greetings Carmichael. Public school kids in Pittsburgh have class on Monday. Whazzup w/dat?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

The playlist for Steinski's show will be here:

bit.ly...

See y'all "over there" at noon...
  10:50am Van in DC:

I haven't decided yet if I'm going to do show by show pledges or just one to WFMU in general. I think if I do show by show I'll lose out on premiums in the end.
  10:51am Brian en Angleterre:

Mr Johnson was charming. The intro was familiar, Coltraneish.
  10:51am ndbob:

Can you pledge to the Give the Drummer Some stream in general?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

Van, you can pledge however, whenever you want, then select whatever number of premiums you qualify for later. It doesn't matter when you actually make the pledge(s).

To be honest, ndbob, a pledge to my show is as close to a pledge to the STREAM as you can get. The stream is my baby. I will be sure to bounce her on my knee extra goofily in everyone's honor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

And by the way, Claude Thornhill here is our mystery guest: on.fb.me...
  10:56am Van in DC:

Really Doug? Back in October, I did show by show pledges, and ended up with only 18 t-shirts, 7 bars of soap and 10 WFMU stickers. Or something like that. ;)

I still haven't figured out who is supposed to be pictured in the band on the shirt, but I've had several people compliment it :)
  10:58am northguineahills:

Derek Bailey on Give the Drummer Some, a first in my book, and I actually have this rec as well (There are scores of Bailey releases)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Doug Schulkind:

@northguineahills
Despite my ever-expanding tastes, I've always found Derek Bailey a tough nut to crack. I realize the "problem" is with me and not his music, but I'm still working on it.
  11:00am Hugo:

I've seen Han Bennink live twice. He literally plays the room. He once asked me for several strips of cigarette paper. Wonder why :)
  11:02am trsh:

whoa -- corner of my eye said 12 already?? Whew.

hey Doug and everyone. Good mornink.
  11:02am Brian en Angleterre:

Hugo, give the drummer some, he wanted some skins!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

If you ask him nicely, Han will play you a drum set made of cheese: bit.ly...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Doug Schulkind:

Hello Trsh! Can I get you some coffee?
  11:05am trsh:

Han Bennink is pretty good caffeine
  11:05am seang:

another drummer that blows me away is Ches Smith--saw him with Ribot
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Doug Schulkind:

Ches Smith—name is new to me. Thanks seang!
  11:08am trsh:

I did the sound for his band in Halifax one time. Tough set up-- just the one electric input.
  11:09am northguineahills:

Han Bennink is a clown in a seriously awesome way when he plays live. I got to see him w/ the ICP Orchestra a while back and once w/ someone else at Tonic a while back (It was a Satnite and drinking at the subtonic dance party beforehand, so I can't remember whom else it was).
  11:15am Hugo:

He looks pretty much like a banker these days, but that's before he gets behind the drum set. I've heard this style described as stick-insect improv, random objects picked up on the tube on the way to the gig, and a packet of crisps ...

Personally, I'm more in the Ogun camp than in the Incus camp, but that's just me ...
  11:18am trsh:

He's the only drummer I've ever seen get out from behind the kit, get down and play the floor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

Han is pretty much the Cecil Taylor of the drum world. There is no surface, object that is not fair game.

Funny how Hugo and Ogun are remarkably similar looking.
  11:23am Van in DC:

Thanks Doug. Missed most of the show today due to work...will catch on archive. Hopefully will get to hear some Steinski later...if not, another archive listen for me. Again. :)
  11:26am trsh:

I saw Hamid Drake play the same venue that year -- Bella Muse. A wonderful space with a brief life that was a few blocks from home.
  11:30am glenn:

I have -- gladly -- heard several Karen Dalton songs on FMU in recent weeks. A nice and ongoing introduction.
  11:44am oguH:

No coincidence, guoD.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

WFMU's old host of Live Music Faucet, Nicholas Hill, produced the first real reissue of Dalton's work about 15 years ago. Stunning stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Doug Schulkind:

Let me know if you think this next performer is or isn't a violent guy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Jesus fucking Christ, he is BLAMING her for what he says he didn't do—as he threatens to bust down the door.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

I guess I just gave away the answer.

It's the 'disregard all evidence' argument. Look at this shiny bit over here.

@Jill
I know, right?!
