Marathon 2012 2 of 2 - with Trouble - Please Pledge, thanks!

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

This is the FINAL weekend of WFMU's fundraising Marathon, our only on-air fund drive of the year, and we're 80 percent of the way to our goal - close, but still a long way to go. If you've already pledged, thanks so much! And if you haven't - or if you might be able to augment a previous pledge or pledges - you can make you contribution to the freeform cause (and also cast a vote of confidence for Transpacific Sound Paradise) using the patented woof-moo pledge box above, or right here:

https://www.wfmu.org/marathon/pledge.php?pr=TP

Click the link and you'll see all the cool premiums you're eligible for if you pledge a given amount. Also, most DJs, me included, offer special 'mixtape' style premium cds with pledges of $75 or more - mine is Transpacific Sound Paradise Rocks the Globe, rock and electric music meet roots from around the world.

We're very proud that WFMU accepts NO UNDERWRITING - which means we depend on listener contributions much more than other non-commercial stations. But what if we did? To jokingly emphasize our freedom from underwriting I'll be sprinkling my show tonight with international ads. You can download them here.

Details on prizes and premiums offered to pledgers:

We do have some incentives to offer to help encourage you to do the good deed:

Any pledge of $75 or more automatically will receive my special premium 'mixtape' cd, Transpacific Sound Paradise Rocks the Globe - the latest greatest unearthed gems from my never-ending world-wide search for bombastic fantastic blends of global roots and rock.

Depending on the amount you pledge you'll be eligible for other special gifts too - such as the new FMU t-shirt designed by Brian Chippendale, the sharp new FMU bag, a colorful FMU turntable slipmat, or our truly unique audio tour of the Garden State, the NJ postcard flexi-disc.

Pledge now using the box above or at https://www.wfmu.org/marathon/pledge.php?pr=TP and the premium options will be revealed - or take a peek at the swag before you pledge at http://wfmu.org/marathon/tch.shtml.

Over the course of tonight's show - in addition to awarding premiums which are automatic depending on how much you pledge - we'll also be doing random giveaways to pledgers, so you may win an additional prize as well. We'll be giving away select world music CDs that I've chosen as the best in our prize collection.

And we'll also be giving away one world music profile DVD per hour. (To be eligible for the DVD drawings you must pledge $75 or more - but that means whether or not you win the DVD, you'll automatically get my compilation CD, FMU t-shirt and FMU sticker.) And we'll award a super special grand prize to one lucky winner, an around-the-world 5-continent 5-cd package.

Winners will be chosen randomly from among tonight's pledgers. If you're not chosen the first time, well, you can always pledge again!

Thanks for listening and even bigger thanks for pledging!

  6:18pm Detroit Mac:

None of that "World Cafe" bullshit - just real world grooves to laugh, dance and cry to. (pledged already but throwing another handfull of change Rob's way!)
  6:26pm Caryn:

GM tends to be the abbreviation for Gambia. If someone pledged all the way from Gambia: fantastic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Ken:

Only $71 away from hitting 87%. Not that Im a number fetishist or anything.
  6:32pm Caryn:

BTW, Rob, have you seen the 2011 documentary feature about Cesária Évora entitled "Mother Africa"?
  6:38pm derp derp:

"we don't take underwriting, which we are allowed to do..." I get that WFMU doesn't, but are there licenses which prevent them from taking ads? being a charity?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm WFMU:

Our license as a non-commercial station does not allow us to run ads. However, underwriting, as you hear on NPR-type stations is legal but we chose not to accept it for fear that it would wreck our sound and undermine our independence. Too long a story for now but I can explain more by email if you wish!
  6:43pm derp derp:

Thanks! derp derp
  6:47pm Karen in Sleepy Hollow:

I'm upping my pledge to the next level to help out with the 20 minutes Terri T stole from Rob over the two weeks of the marathon.
  6:53pm Irene:

I'm finishing out my Mouse Pledge on Rob's show in honor of all the great music he finds-- and for DJ Trouble who finds great music of a different type that I also love! Kudos to both of you!
  6:54pm Carmichael:

Good luck, Rob! Pledge away for this great music, peoples!
  6:56pm Andy:

Hooray! I'm a weiner!!! Hubbards, by the way, is in Nova Scotia, but the pledge page doesn't give province options for Canada...
  7:03pm Doug S.:

One of my all-time favorites, too, Rob. Always blew me away that "Sweet Mother" sold more than 10 million copies. Wow!

  8:54pm Ken From Hyde Park:

  8:54pm Doug S.:

Rob is essentially one Y3K ($1,000) pledge away from hitting his goal. One shining knight needs to charge forth to make it a shining night! You can pay it off monthly @ only $83 a month. That's less than most cable TV bills. Funds that come in as Y3K pledges pay for big, vital WFMU projects, like repairing transmitter equipment. It frees up money for our annual operating budget to cover the gazillion daily expenses like utility bills and bandwidth for all of our webstreaming.

We're looking for a magnificent Y3K pledge to thrill everyone at the station and the thousands tuned in right now.
GO FOR IT!
