  9:03pm
Julie:

13 women and you the only man in town!
  9:04pm
G:

In case no one mentioned it yet, They Might Be Giants outed you on 7SD as originally "Evan Hunk Davies" in high school... Or is the "Sugar Daddy" opener a response? :-P Would also add some resonance to "13 Women"...
  9:05pm
SteveL:

A prime number of women approve of efd.

Dave B:

"Rock The Nation" on your "Bad Motor Scooter" efd

As /rupture might say, it's the Evan Davies Hunk Show!

It's time for the Hunk!
  9:08pm
G:

Yeah, he just said Evan Davies Funk Show again!
  9:08pm
SteveL:

Its the funk show with more Davies!
  9:10pm
Andrew Korell:

Now there's enough Funk Davies to butter both sides your toast.

Hey everyone, thanks for tuning in and thanks to all who pledged during the marathon!

As for this "hunk" business, that is not a nickname that I recall from my high school years.
  9:15pm
Mr. Stone:

mighty sly cover
  9:15pm

But could it be a nickname available for a $1000 donation?

Thank YOU, EFD!

Does someone not recalling something mean it absolutely categorically didn't happen? :-P

Yeah that 7SD revelation was cool :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm

I will say this: 1. I haven't heard the 7SD show yet, and 2. IF this "hunk" business really happened it is categorically a response to the original nickname, "funk."
  9:21pm
Julie:

Forget the nickname, they said he played drums on their demos!

Thank you EFD, you'll never know what you did for me by playing that George song.

Thank you, Julie, for getting to the real story here.
  9:24pm

They were pretty definite about it, but in efd's defense it *is* true that people tend to recall "good stories" as true just because the story is better if it's presented as true.

A little nostalgia can be good... And then there's Wikka Rap.. That Hot Chocolate kicked ass tho.

They described their highschool social group as a bunch of guys and the girls who didn't want to date them -- with *one* exception, so they claim in restrospect. Maybe just to tease you, you'd have to ask them...!

Danne, I think Julie was there in person.

G, I have to think there was some good-natured ribbing involved there. It's very possible that there was a "hunk" spin-off, though, but I genuinely don't recall it.
  9:54pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Drove to scenic City Gardens in 81 to see Revillos.. No show visa probs.
  9:55pm
Van in DC:

Hey Evan, even more congratulations here on the FMU goal and stuff. We all done real good. Yay us all! By the way, was that you as Mr. Drummer that I caught on the ustream replay of the grand finale? Methinks so, but the whole band, and the singers, were all so wonderful.
  9:56pm
Randy in NC:

I would think that the 2 Johns could also be just goofing around. Have they ever not?
  9:56pm
G:

Listen later, and get your own sense if it was serious or a legpull! Until you said that's not your memory of it, I think as lot of 7SD listeners thought they were serious...
  9:58pm
Randy in NC:

I heard them say it.
  9:59pm
Van in DC:

Somebody else played throwing up in the past day or two, but I can't remember who it was? Never had heard of them before this week.
  10:00pm
SteveL:

Never knew the Revillos/Rezillos connection. I am wiser.
  10:01pm
Danne D:

LOL sorry Julie - didn't mean to make it sound like you didn't know that :) Bad phrasing on my part :(

Btw, Evan and everyone - you have to check out Catie's tumblr of great Hoof n Mouth drawings when tumblr is acting less shitty. Our hero is prominently featured
  10:04pm
Danne D:

I prefer to believe the version as told by John and John as it squares with the image that EFD projects :)

@Van - Evan was in fact one of the many fine drummers during Hoof N Mouth - not sure which particular songs.

@EFD - great you are doing a Ronnie Montrose tribute! RIP Ronnie :(

@Danne - no, didn't hear the 7 seconds thing. Never have actually. It's on my list of things. Along with, still, trying to figure out all the fuss over that "Sharpling" guy. Really. The "BEST" show? Huh. I don't THINK so.

You're always one of the top highlights, Evan :) Glad I was there to do the proper fist pumps during your performance

Nice to throw a haymaker at scharpling. Why don't you call him, that would be awesome radio.
  10:29pm
Mike Sin:

All right -- Montrose set! Hagar only around for first LP... Back in the day, "Jump On It" was one of those LP covers that all the young dudes would at least slow down and check out every time while flipping through the used bin.
  10:29pm
Danne D:

@VAN what was your "gateway" show to WFMU? Actually that's one that would be fun if everyone answered.

Mine was "Aerial View" back when it was on Fridays back in probably '96 or so. Maybe '95
  10:30pm
Dave B:

@Mike Sin - another Hipgnosis piece I do believe...
  10:31pm
Van in DC:

If you mean mean Destroit, then, I just might. If I can ever remember when his show is on. I can't even remember this one, and efd is awesome.

@Danne - Julie's Dark Night of the Soul was my gateway show, upon doing a Twitter search of "Toyah" about a year ago. And I'm getting deeper & deeper in to WFMU :) Loving it. Except that Sharpling guy. :)
  10:33pm
Mike Sin:

I stand corrected after checking my fax on the inner-net -- Hagar on board for first two.

Gateway WFMU show = Bill Kelly, 1983.
  10:33pm

Mine was Airborne Event, last March. Bodah blew my mind and I've never turned back.
  10:33pm
Danne D:

Tom's show is at the same time as Evan's except on Tuesday Night - 9p-12mid eastern. It's great stuff even if I'm a mediocre at best caller on those rare occasions that I do call.

Further to above: I would sometimes set my VCR to record the audio of shows I was going to miss and then record that onto cassette to listen to on a Walkman later.
Hi Destroit! Nice to be read :)
  10:40pm
Danne D:

Wow Hip Transistor - there's a classic.

I've decided to throw this up on twitter too.
  10:41pm
mrmucho:

Montrose was proto-Van Halen: Ted Templemen/WB, flashy guitar player's surname is the band name, blonde-haired singer...
  10:42pm
Van in DC:

After Julie, I discovered Irene (who I adopted this year :) ), Doug S., Amanda, and so many others. Ken, Irwin, Bryce, Scott, Sinner, Tony, the entire GTDS stream actually... and so many others. Trouble, Liz, Meghan, it just never seems to end here. WFMU has that way of just taking over your entire life surreptitiously. Maybe that is why I refuse to listen to that Sharpling guy. That would be just one more brick in the wall.

  10:46pm
Kat in Chicago:

@Carolyn that rules.
  10:46pm
Randy in NC:

My gateway was that WNEW started to stink and WPIX changed formats. Very early '80's. Frank O'Toole, Wm Berger, Irwin, Jim Price, Pat Duncan, The Hound, Vanilla Bean, can't remember who else.
  10:47pm
Carolyn:

Yes it does. Evan has never sounded better too.
  10:47pm
Destroit:

Same here Roberto! Van, it never ends here. Perpetual funtime. There is no shame if you don't like scharpling, he's a totally different animal....to my knowledge, there is not another caller-oriented comedy talk show on FMU. In short, if you like Stern, you like Scharpling.
  10:48pm
Van in DC:

I have seen competing comments over this "Nardwuar" as well before. That is yet another facet of FMU I know nothing of. I still have SO much to discover here, being the newbie here.

Nardwuar is a unique experience that is the ultimate wtf is going on when you stumble upon it. Turns out the guy is a real weirdo, gets great interviews. Love him.

I was very much digging the moody atmospherics of Screen Vinyl Image. Horrible name though.

  10:53pm
Danne D:

@Van - that is fault. The BEST show's slogan is "Three hours of mirth, music, and mayhem." - the first 30 minutes or so would be the music part. Tom is an excellent DJ in his own right and actually originally had a music program on WFMU.
  10:54pm
Mildred:

This is my fav song on the new GBV!
  10:55pm
Van in DC:

@Danne D - yep, just now :)
  10:56pm
Van in DC:

@Danne D - as for the show title...just going by what is on the FMU schedule :)
  10:57pm
Destroit:

Yes Van, he plays music to open the show, but 9:30-12:00, it's generally callers, maybe a special guest, fake callers, longtime callers/characters story telling, puppet shows, etc. Sometime celeb guests. I like it, but not everybody's bag.
  10:58pm
Danne D:

@Van I meant "That is False" not "That is Fault" in my last post.

@Destroit I disagree about the Stern/Scharpling comparison. Not a Stern fan at all. Tom's show is an interesting mix of real calls, skits and music. Stern is not that - it's more bathroom oriented.

Agree with that great old-school TV editorial reference :)

Philosophically I think it's great that there are shows to not like on WFMU - if you can listen to the station 24/7 then the station must be missing something IMO and should be putting that on the air.
  10:59pm
Destroit:

Danne, I'm mucking my way through an iPhone and you just put it perfectly. :)
  11:00pm
Mildred:

EFD, You do this every time I'm ready to hit the sack. You start playing stuff I can't resist listening longer to. GBV into dBs for pete's sake!
  11:01pm
Van in DC:

I still just want to know if Evan was playing drums at Maxwell's a few days ago. I THINK that was him, but not certain. Whoever that was, he did a really okay job. Of course, if that were Evan, he did a GREAT job.
  11:01pm
Danne D:

Tom's show is one of the very few things on this earth that can me to actually laugh out loud.

Evan's show is such that I actually catch myself smiling while listening to it
  11:01pm
Dave B:

Destroit - I think he uses sonic tactics like others of the order Cetacea in order to get those interviews.

Kind of "stuns" the interviewee with the clicks and pops that generate from his frontal lobe.
  11:02pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

My Fmu gateway was the enormous rotating antenna my father had the foresight to put up on the roof of our house outside philly... Allowing me to pick up the pride of the Oranges and warp me forever. Later listened while living in nyc circa 85-86.. Most memorable show at the time was a latenight show where the host was in a constant faux rage... Very funny... Would love to know how who it was. Now listen to via the nets.
  11:03pm
Danne D:

@Van Evan played drums on some of the songs during Hoof N Mouth. So did Bryce, as well as Tom Storck and Dennis Diken. (I think that's all the drummers that played this year.
  11:03pm
Randy in NC:

wrt the old-school TV editorial reference, are there any there any TV stations that still do that? Or has all that been replaced by things like Faux News which do it 24/7?

Van in DC:

I'm guessing that was pre-Steinski Barkevious Shabazz ...? But Steinski was / is awesome :)
  11:04pm
Randy in NC:

@Barkevious, that would have been Bud Stipa I think.
  11:05pm
Danne D:

@Barkevious - I know that Chris T had a show late-night show called Nightmare Lounge way back when before Aerial View. Not sure when though :)
  11:05pm
Mildred:

The Clean or Big Dipper would keep me awake, so off to bed I go before you end this break. Thanks always for being great.
  11:06pm
Dave B:

@Randy - to the best of my knowledge, with the advent of cable TV the local editorials/end of day national anthem sign offs are a thing of the past.

I miss those days
  11:06pm
Van in DC:

Thanks @Danne D - Yep I thought that was EFD I saw on Julie and Amanda's songs :) all of them did AWESOMELY well!!

@Van Evan has been known to dabble in drumming prior to his FMU days as well...http://wildmooseparty.com/pix/cosmops-band.jpg

RIP bubblebath, what a shame lol
  11:09pm
Dave B:

@Danne D - "The Google Fu is strong within you"
  11:09pm
Camel:

WTF????
  11:09pm
Destroit:

What the heck do you think stern does, Danne? Real calls, skits, interviews, music, commentary on current events, fake callers, and he had a custom puppet 15 years ago. Similarities are there, love 'em both. Bathroom Does not apply at all in 2012.
  11:09pm
Randy in NC:

@Dave B, Jesse Helms got his start on a local TV station down here doing editorials.
  11:10pm
chris m.:

listener Kirsten is 2 for 2!
  11:10pm
Kat in Chicago:

@efd: Maybe you could fit "Ticket Salad Sandwich" to "Polk Salad Annie"?
  11:10pm
Danne D:

Ticket Salad Sandwich Time?
  11:12pm
Danne D:

@Destroit - I don't think they are comparable. True I haven't bothered with Stern for years and barely listen to Imus all that much either but it's like saying all talk shows are the same and that is not true. I decidedly disagree.
  11:12pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Thanks Van, Randy and Danne.
  11:12pm
Danne D:

Ugh - I can't go to TMBG as I will be at Devils-Islanders *sigh*
  11:12pm
Holly in NC:

I appreciate Nardwuar for his many, many hysterical & insightful interviews *and*, perhaps more importantly, for introducing me to this amazing xmas novelty song:

kiemzi:

ha! i think that theme worked just fine, efd! TICKET SALAD SANDWICH TIME
  11:12pm
Danne D:

I'd be curious what the crossover is b/w Stern and Scharpling. I would think that it's not all that much.
  11:15pm
Marty DeBergi:

The review for "Shark Sandwich" was merely a two word review which simply read "Shit Sandwich".
  11:15pm
Destroit:

I'm curious too. Am I the only stern fan on FMU?! :)
  11:15pm
Danne D:

Evan - I would suggest a song off of ELP's Brain Salad Surgery might be appropriate - Karn Evil 9, 1st Impression Part 2 "Welcome Back My Friends To the Show That Never Ends" - not bad for a ticket segment. Just sayin'
  11:17pm
Danne D:

@Destroit - that's a different question. I would think that there's more crossover with X.Ray and Glen Jones for Stern fans.
  11:17pm
Van in DC:

Ha. I almost remembered enough of the number to actually call. Almost.

Good night all.

Oh, and hey! You can still pledge! :)

...or is that so next year now. Dunno. But giving all your money to FMU never goes out of style. Right? :)

Anyway. Thanks Evan. Thanks all the fellow commenters on the Kenzo playlist.

kiemzi:

i know we're all gonna miss the luxury ticket bubble bath, guys but it's a new day, it's a new dawn, it's TICKET SALAD SANDWICH TIME
  11:18pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

Big fan of Tom, and longtime Howard listener, but he's so phoning it in at this point.
  11:19pm
chris m.:

i wish i could take a ticket salad sandwich with me into the luxury ticket bubble bath
  11:20pm
G:

@Danne: Stern grew up listening to Bob Grant who was Joe Pyne's understudy back in California in the 60s.

There is no way to draw a bright line between that line of descent and Tom. He has a musical breadth Stern doesn't have and the strictly political talkers don't want. But Tom didn't invent the term or concept "GOMP". Tom himself does get into political stuff sometimes -- e.g., Limbaugh commentary last night... But he's mainly a cultural commentator/satirist -- movies, tv, comedy, music, current trends, etc.
  11:21pm
Destroit:

True, but from what I've heard, I'd connect X-ray and glen with the imus crowd, which is entirely separate from the stern crowd.
  11:21pm
kiemzi:

i wish i could have a ticket salad sandwich in a luxury ticket bubble bath in a midnight ticket oasis!
  11:22pm
Danne D:

@VAN You can still pledge :) Have a good night!
  11:23pm
Danne D:

Ooh, Evan, Weezer has a song called "Sandwiches Time" that might work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fw7U5hNvxE8
  11:23pm
Dave B:

I'd settle for a midnight luxury salad ticket bath oasis.
  11:24pm
Randy in NC:

Pumpkin time for me, as always great show, thanks Evan. Can't wait for June 1!
  11:24pm
Danne D:

@Destroit - May be a bit of both, Destroit. May be a bit of both. I'd think closer to Stern myself.
  11:25pm
Danne D:

(Side note, it's actually X.Ray not X-Ray :)
  11:27pm
Danne D:

hmm, so how you guys think this cutting down on my comments thing is working out for me? :)
  11:27pm
G:

great! :-P
  11:28pm
Miss Edie:

l'll have the brown ones...
and those great big white ones...
and l'll have those over there.

And l want some for frying
and for scrambling...
and for hard-boiled for snacks

Oh, God, and l'll have those over there.
  11:29pm
Brian:

If you want to do another ticket song by an East Vancouver novelty act (Canned Hamm did "Bubble Bath"), you might consider "That's How You Make a Sandwich" by Duplex: http://tinyurl.com/775j76v

Eggs Eggs Eggs!
  11:30pm

Belated good evening all! Happy Purim!

Hmmm... interesting comment thread. Pause while I read...
  11:30pm
Miss Edie:

Please, Mr. Eggman...
please don't ever quit your job.
  11:30pm
Danne D:

Looks like its gonna come down to Salad or Sandwich gonna be hard to get both of those in there!
  11:31pm
Miss Edie:

  11:33pm
Danne D:

@holly no kidding *sigh*
  11:33pm
Barkevious Shabazz:

I think the EFD/Tim + Eric Billion $ Movie overlay might be more interesting.
  11:34pm
Sybil:

No more bubble bath? Danne D dieting on comments? Scharpling and Stern mentioned in the same breath? What have you children been up to?!
  11:35pm
Dave B:

efd - thanks for putting up with my own brand of nonsense! See ya soon folks!
  11:35pm
Sybil:

  11:37pm

G'night Dave. @Sybil - I didn't say starvation. I just think I comment a bit more than is probably healthy/necessary

@Sybil make sure you check out Seven Select Delay's interview with They Might Be Giants for a Paul Harveyesque expose on the past of our beloved EFD.
  11:47pm
Sybil:

Ooh, Danne, can't wait!
  11:47pm
Holly in NC:

It's OK, Danne- I got called a 'c*nt' in the comment section of my blog because a seriously socially impaired person feels that I comment too frequently on other people's blogs. ?! This dude follows all the blogs I follow & reads my comments, freaky.
  11:48pm

That sandwich thingy.

That is seriously weird, Holly. But so goes the interwebs.
  11:49pm
Danne D:

@Holly - sorry to hear that :(

Nobody's said anything to me about it, it's more of a self-assessment to be honest.
