Hi Irene - saw your fine note on the Peter Bergman memorial page. I was hoping you'd open with some FT.

Peter Bergman RIP.

I couldn't pass this up! Firesign Theatre was so important to me when I was first getting into radio as a young-un. I've practically memorized this whole piece!

I still consider the DEAR FRIENDS collection one of the greatest product of human brains on this here earth. .. Well done, ms. Irene.
  12:11pm
glenn:

ooh, is the whole show going to be firesign stuff?
  12:14pm
kat330:

Late to keyboard but listening from the get-go. I was so lucky to see Firesign live when I was in Providence, RI. They were performing at some RISD auditorium.
  12:15pm
Bill S:

Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm
Irene:

No, just a little off the top here, Glenn.

I'm not familiar with this partcular Firesign album. It's wonderful!
  12:19pm
Bill S:

My ponytailed dentist used to their routines for an incredulous assistant while I mumbled with mouth full of cotton that I had at that time seen them recently. Hand me the pliers.

In 1996 I had the pleasure of being an engineer on one of the first internet broadcasts ever, with the Firesign Theatre performing live from The Knitting Factory. (Phil Austin wasn't with them that time) They were all really great to work with and good guys. You can listen to that show here:

  12:23pm
Parq:

Ah, this is the one that ends with the extended Joyce quote, isn't it?
  12:23pm
Greg Baron:

i've been waiting for the electrician or someone like him... but this will do just fine. long live FST

Making me hungry for a fistfull of grubclusters.
  12:33pm
kat330:

@vk: new ground in radio and taboo-busters in general.
  12:36pm
Brian en Angleterre:

Irene, sad about Peter Bergmann. Still have not figured the difference twixt the two Lennon/Lenins. They were small people with hairy faces.
  12:37pm
Brian en Angleterre:

As someone said about Davy Jones 'Showbiz right down to his toes'.
  12:39pm
glenn:

was that someone anthony newley?
  12:39pm
Jack:

I think I've had my first ever flashback. I was driving around doing my chores tune in Irene's show and I hear The Firesign Theatre. Thank You Irene! ( Didn't we have them all memorized?)
  12:39pm
Jack:

groatclusters!
  12:43pm
Brian en Angleterre:

Think it was an English journalist.
  12:50pm
kat330:

Don't know this one, but it sounds like John of TMBG doing a Rufus Wainwright ditty.
  12:51pm
Brian en Angleterre:

Happy glenn.

kat330:

Awww, Groucho! :)
  1:06pm
joe:

Wow the quality on this Hooray for ... is great. Is this a rerecording?
  1:07pm
Carmichael:

Loudon Wainwright portrayed a Captain Spaulding on 2 episodes of MASH. He sang the Suicide Song on one show.
  1:08pm
kat330:

@Carm: Way to tie the threads together!
  1:11pm
Carmichael:

Just noticed the connection this moment (well, THAT moment), given Alan Alda's proclivity to mimic Groucho. Irene performed the actual "tying".
  1:13pm
seang:

ahhhhh, so romantic, I love you all
  1:13pm
Bill S:

Where do you go to my lovely.
  1:15pm
Brian en Angleterre:

1968.
  1:17pm
Parq:

And let's not forget the bright line that ran from the Marx Bros to Firesign.
  1:18pm
Deepak:

Loving every second of this show.
  1:22pm
Carmichael:

The Firesign bits where they were just pretending to read the TV guide and making up shows were stunning comedy to me.
  1:25pm
Bill S:

There's a nice live version of "Where Do you go to" on youtube. All this time i had no no idea what he looked like.
  1:28pm
kat330:

Groucho performed Lydia.. on his game show, so maybe recorded from that?
  1:29pm
Bill S:

PArq: Marx and Lennon.
  1:29pm
Carmichael:

He also performed Lydia on the Dick Cavett show, late in life.
  1:30pm
kat330:

You are correct, sir, and I saw that at the time even.
  1:35pm
Brian en Angleterre:

Bill S his first single was called 'I am a Cathedral' though he really only has one hit. Looks like a small creature under his nose!!
  1:42pm
Bill S:

That song gives me a lot of ideas of where to in the Mediterranean right after i graduate Sorbonne.
  1:43pm
Parq:

@Bill S, 1:29: Exactly.
  1:44pm
Bill S:

Spoonful, Springfield, Hardin ... my birthday is months away.
  1:47pm
Brian en Angleterre:

Funnily, I saw PS at my first gig in July '68. It was a charity do including The Byrds with Gram Parsons & The Move. Joe Cocker was also on playing 'Little Help....' for the first time.
  1:48pm
Bill S:

I did go to Sorbonne. Really. Well i looked at the nice columns.
  1:48pm
kat330:

Irene is certainly hitting all the right notes with me today.
  1:49pm
Bill S:

Byrds with Gram Parsons! Holy smokes!

Irene, it may be a little bittersweet but you're NAILING it today! Great show.
@Carm & kat-Watched that show too...Cavett was such a great repository for lost(but not forgotten) moments and artist from the 60s & earllier. Saw Cavett when he did 7SD last year...Very nice, amazingly humble man.
  1:55pm
kat330:

Listened to that 7SD as well, Kevin, and just last week we dl-ed an Alec Baldwin interview with Cavett. I think it's "Here's the Thing" on NPR. I'll check it out.
