Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Favoriting March 15, 2012: Occupy The Waldorf Astoria - Anti-Romney Protest

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Artist Track Album Label Year Format Comments Approx. start time
This show was recorded on Wednesday, March 14th, in front of (and around the circumference of) the Waldorf Astoria Hotel at 50th St. and Park Avenue in Manhattan. Occupy Wall Street protesters and other concerned citizens were speaking out against Mitt Romney's presence in town for a campaign fundraiser, and other related greivances.

I wanted to mention how influential Firesign Theatre, and particularly the Dear Friends 2-LP set, was to me and The Dusty Show. Their style of comedy was wholly new at the time and quite radical. I can't over-exxagerate what an impression hearing them had on me when I was14. RIP Peter Bergman and thanks for your innovative humor.

In all honesty, I wish I'd had time to edit the rest of this episode. Not that this man isn't interesting. He is. Probably just so I can edit out the parts where I sound dumb. There is actually more of that type of footage than you can imagine. All stored in a Yuban coffee can in the attic.

I DID have the option to hold these last interviews until next week and gussie them up at that time. I could have just played records for half-an-hour. Could have! These are decisions I fret about after-the-fact. When it seems I may have settled for less than was possible. Plain, unadorned interviews. Not very damned Dusty. THen again, I suppose my real trepidation is that you'll prefer it this way. Which leads me closer to my planned Clay-Free episode. Coming soon.

... and continues.
Clarification: When the man said, "You will not play this on the radio," it was not what it may have seemed. He was saying that he didn't think I would air it, as in - I wish you WOULD, but I know you won't. I hope that makes sense. Some wondered if I'd violated his wished of it not being aired, but that was not the case. If you listen, you can hear me shut off the tape player and re-start it. This is when I asked him if it was all right to continue and ...

... he continues ...
Just for the record ... I NEVER tape anyone without them knowing it and I won't air something if someone asks me not to.

Thanks very much for checking out the show. I wish I had had the time to finsih the second-half. Edits and all that. It always bums me to just roll tape, but, sometimes I have to. Been very busy lately and trying to squeeze enough time in for Dustyfying Activites. Never want to just "phone it in" you know? Anyway ,.,, it felt really, really good to do some Occupying again. I found that I really missed the energy and commitment I always sense when I am near an Occupy Action. I hope you'll check one out soon. Very interesting things happening everywhere. Still kind of in a happy haze from Marathon, which was so much fun this time around. Thanks again for your support. Also, I really enjoy the Accu-Playlist and seeing familiar and new names on there each week. It feels like family and I like that.

Umm ... what else? Guess that's it for now. I would love to hear from you if you have a moment. I love your feedback on the show - thoughts on the world you live in - compliments - criticisms - all welcome,

dusty@wfmu.org

OK, now I'm really going. Take care everybody and be happy or be however you want to be. Life is good. Peace and love. Take care and ... always remember.

Stopped by Liberty Park a few weeks ago very late rainy night. Cops cops cops everywhere. Not a soul to be seen in the park. Took a seat to enjoy the view of the new national security tower under construction. Laid back to get a better view on one the tables. After a few minutes I was joined by a plain clothes officer who informed me that you are no longer allowed to recline or otherwise take a recumbent posture in the park. He was relatively apologetic for breaking balls but I had no doubt that an arrest was on the horizon. Sad.

The occupy camp in Dublin got wound up last week. Sort of became a subject of popular derision over the last 2-3 months, despite the fact that everybody is complaining about enforced austerity, bailing out banks & bondholders.

Just 15 people in the camp when the police came and tore it down.

@Barbara: For example, many Occupys are respectful to the surrounding police, calling them the 99% themselves. Occupy Oakland however is very radical (they shut down the port in December) and the police in Oakland have a long history of brutality (the Marine vet shot in the head with a tear gas canister). Occupy Oakland says that those police may be 99% economically, but are part of the 1% for protecting power with a vengeance.
