A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

good morning pkny and manchester england! we are in a death match to win best non commercial radio station in the universe! if you are listening on line and sign in through here it counts as a vote for wfmu!

morning van! still b/p: all week now i have been pulled out of sleep while it is still dark by an insistent mockingbird. shocked at first to be awake, once i realize what i am listening to i am thrilled
  9:19am
c2677:

i don't understand this madness contest thing - how do we "win"... do we have to log in and "like" every show?
  9:20am
hmmmm:

soundtap not working for me. I signed in, pressed play on wfmu and it says at the top (where it was playing normally for my 90 min max yesterday) "Select a show to begin streaming". I went to the wfmu profile to click on "listen live" but nothing happens, also went to Trouble's on air show to click on "listen live" and also nothing. Any suggestions? I tried signing off and then signing back on again but can't get wfmu to play on soundtap. Anyone else having this problem?

Record your mockingbird and include it as one of your talk-over bird selections! (Or designate DJ Icepack as the 0-dark-thirty field recording engineer with suitable compensation.)
  9:27am
Andy in Iowa City:

I think Soundtap is working for me, but who knows. WFMU had a solid lead yesterday until WOBC suddenly started surging last night. Kinda weird. It's just a silly contest of course, but we all want to share our 'FMU love. Btw, WOBC isn't even using their transmitter today. To listen, people have to go online/through Soundtap. Convenient: "previously schedule maintenance."
  9:27am
Andy in Iowa City:

Oh, and hello and good morning to Trouble and fellow listeners!
  9:28am
Deepak:

'Music of the alps', another compilation i'll try and get.
  9:28am
groucho:

@Toonman hew geordie lad! I'm from Durham originally.
  9:30am
diane:

It's been weird since at least Dan Bodah's show. I checked it at various points between now and then, and it always shows 12 listeners for OBC and 4 for FMU. Even though on the "top shows" page at Soundtap, Airborne was #1 with 40 or 50 listeners. A founder from Soundtap called Dan during his show. Dan reckons the site was (is?) swamped and that eventually all credits will be duly counted.
  9:37am
groucho:

I'm listening via soundtap but I don't like the concept of comparing stations. different people like different things, they shouldn't then be told 'well, what you listen to is ranked 3 below what I listen to, so I'm better than you'. I bet the winning station is crap anyway and only plays bass-y music to rattle the one brain cell of it's combined listenership
  9:38am
Faye:

This is the kind of show I can depend on! I love you Trouble.
  9:39am
still b/p:

Tina Cole, Rob's wife on My Three Sons, was one of them Four King Cousins. At a time when I looked pretty much like Ernie, I thought she was somethin'.
  9:41am
groucho:

do the Four King Cousins know their name sounds rude if you say it fast?
  9:42am
Cecile:

my heroes are: Captain Beefheart, my friends with chronic illnesses, Sylvester, Arthur Ashe, and Michael Yonkers.
  9:43am
diane:

I think the concept of the contest was basically a good way to draw attention to the website, which I'm pleased they did- it's a nice concept. On the front page (soundtap.com) there's a "now playing" list, where you can easily check a whole bunch of stations to see what's playing...
  9:43am
Cecile:

I didn't know there were still 63 non-commercial stations left in the world.
  9:43am
Cecile:

And good morning.
  9:44am
Andy in Iowa City:

Good attitude Trouble. We're all here, we know what's good for our ears (and hearts)!
  9:46am
hmmmm:

yeah, still can't get on for some reason
  9:48am
c2677:

Ok, so I finally just figured out that ou have to hit the play button and listen through their stream... why?
  9:50am
c2677:

@diane the "4" and the "12" are the seedings. WFU was placed into the tournament bracket "ranked" #4.
  9:50am
Van in DC:

Yeah, with soundtap, I just keep hitting F5 (refresh) and then click on Play again when I have problems...
  9:51am
(-_-):

BOYCOTT THE SOUNDTAP CONTEST, NOW!
  9:51am
hmmmm:

omg that did it, pressing F5. Thanks Van in DC!
  9:52am
(-_-):

Main thing is that the Marathon contest was won.
  9:53am
diane:

@c2677 Well, I'm feeling a bit sheepish now...At least I learned a new term, "seedings," on top of the challenging math practice required for posting.
  9:53am
dc pat:

nice list Cecile. I'like Arthur Ashe too. Hmmm coming up with a concise list for me would be really tough. Tom Waits comes to mind, Joe Strummer... Stravinsky? Wolf, my dad, Abbie Hoffman? Nick Cave, MLK, Flanery O'Connor,
  9:54am
groucho:

soundtap's homepage IS useful, plus, according to the little love hearts, this is the most loved show on air right now. can't argue with that, but again, this can't be everyone's cup of tea, but what is?
  9:56am
dc pat:

...anybody that realizes and fulfills their own unique vision...
  9:57am

this tune is flat out amazing.

good morning trouble!!!
  9:57am
Snortley:

Cool thing about Soundtap is that apparently you can click the slider to rewind to an earlier point in the webcast. Last night when Dan Bodah started playing metal, not to my taste, I was able to go back to Kurt's fill-in and catch stuff I missed while I was out.

Hello trouble & friends. Saw the first magnolia in bloom yesterday. Now that is Springtime for me. One of the bestest trees but so blooming short.
  10:05am
Van in DC:

@Brian - waaaaay too short. They are so magnificent and smell so wonderful. For like less than a week.
  10:07am

yeah, like the magnolias. They're pretty much gone now around here... especially after that king hell rain this morning..

Van it feels sad when the blossoms have gone. To misquote the song 'Is That All There Is (left)?'

trouble that is a hanging offence.
  10:10am
Tyler:

that francoise hardy song was sampled by dirty beaches latest album, I was fooled by the original!
  10:10am

Shame on WOBC - they have shut down their over the air broadcast to sway the results on Soundtap. Come on WFMU log in and play!
  10:11am

When I wrote hanging I meant serious tickling at least.
