Favoriting April 4, 2012: Much love for Times Square

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Track Comments Approx. start time
Male/Female mix   Public Announcement's Wanna bump yr. body, then Monica's The First Night. Male/Female priorities are different sometimes.  0:00:00 (Pop-up)

Hooray! The channel 7 news sign in Times Square was glitching out so hard. What an inspirational place. Hear the Max Neuhaus sound installation with a 360 degrees panorama visual here.

0:23:03 (Pop-up)
The Tape Beatles   Few tracks from this landmark of pop-culture cut-ups, A Subtle Buoyancy of Pulse.  0:30:10 (Pop-up)
DJ Convict Scorpion   Oh maaannnn....this one was skipping way worse on the other CD player. It still sounds pretty good tho. Rockin guitar appropriationage.  0:38:40 (Pop-up)

Self playing organ by Lutz Bacher at the Whitney Biennial.

0:41:35 (Pop-up)

5 seconds from every song in WFMU's mp3 library   Yeeeep, I'll be releasing this monster on the blog over the next few months. I've only processed bands that start with symbols, haven't even gotten to the letter "A" yet, but expect! Expect!  0:48:41 (Pop-up)
DJ Olive   Aki Onda listed this fella as an influence on one of his CDs, and it's pretty rad stuff! This CD's called Bodega.  0:56:09 (Pop-up)
SADE-THON   Oh my god, this girl is the best. Perfect combo of R&B, smooth jazz, really great bongo usage, no fear of slap bass. Sade, you have my heart.

Here's a cool cube with digitally manipulated shoes on it. Also at the Whitney Biennial, by K8 Hardy.

1:04:44 (Pop-up)
Jon Appleton   Pioneer of midcentury electronic music. He built the first digital synthesizer, the synclavier. Worked a lot with tape music, electroacoustic systems. And, of course, EXPERIMENTAL synthesis in the truest sense of experimental - laboratory science to develop and discover new methods of creating sound with new technology.

You can stream a ton of his music on the DRAM archives.

1:45:12 (Pop-up)
Joseph Nechvatal   Various tracks from old Flux Tellus compilations.  1:58:11 (Pop-up)
The Harlemans   Awesome reissue on Out Loud Productions called Poetry Out Loud Number 9. ~1975 hippie rants and sound poetry.  2:01:17 (Pop-up)
Angus Maclise   Maybe my favorite hippie. Here's a song for bongo and magnetic tape.  2:06:40 (Pop-up)
Aaron Dilloway   New 12" out on Hundebiss called Lip Syncing to Verme.  2:11:45 (Pop-up)
Jon Appleton with Don Cherry   Cool electronic manips and counterpoint of this monster of free trumpet. Pic from the liner notes...

2:16:24 (Pop-up)
Tomutonttu   nice bleepy bloopy trance musik. New split with Astral Social Club.  2:23:23 (Pop-up)
Dj Kinetic   Haha, this is pretty much a mixtape of rarities. But he doesn't credit any of the artists! I don't care either! Some cool turntablism in here though.  2:37:30 (Pop-up)

Thanks buddy

Puff Daddy is at his best when on the phone with Bjork. That would have fit in well with your first mix today.
  3:31am
Chris:

I've always been struck by how it's noticeably warmer at night around there due to all the lights in Times Square.
  3:36am
Veronica:

Great Max Neuhaus anecdote.
  3:39am
fred:

Nat, have you looked into soundscapes and soundmaps?
Avatar 3:40am
Nat:

Oohhhh, I'll have to find that Puff Daddy phone convo! One cool thing about the Max Neuhaus piece is that it was made back in the day, way before Times Square become this consumerist mecca. The experience of the piece is totally different now that when it was made.

Nat:

Not sure if I have, Fred. What do you mean in specific? I mean, I've listened to many soundscapes, but it sounds like you've got something specific in mind.
  3:42am
Veronica:

Oh wow, I didn't know that. I'm a huge fan of his work. Do you know when it was created for Times Square, by any chance?
  3:43am
neil:

no one said negativland. what? is there any escape?
Avatar 3:43am
Nat:

Decades ago, I'm sure you can find it easily online, but I'm busy at the moment...
  3:46am
Veronica:

Busy? You mean you're not just slacking off over there. ;-) Yeah, I thought to check online as soon as I asked. Sorry. It was created in 1977. Can't believe I've been to Times Square without even realizing it was there.

fred:

A soundmap is a digital map with sounds recorded from each area, you can build a virtual soundwalk from these. I think this principle begs to be abused.

Nat, re self-playing computers, you should take a look at this: http://robinmeier.net/?page_id=37

Ah cool, are there any good examples of soundmaps that you know of? I'll check out that Robin Meier piece when I get off the air.

Here's a good list of soundmaps I was just checking out: http://www.jetstreaming.org/2011/12/21/sound-effects-and-space-soundmap-roundup/

she sounds a bit like Freddie Mercury behind all the noise
Avatar 4:18am

Ah yea, slowing down the tracks does tend to make vocals pretty androgenous.
