	3:52pm hubba: My daughter likes Lady Gaga, but so do I. Recently we watched Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and now she is hooked on the Bee Gees. She loves watching Yellow Submarine when she has a fever... go figure. Musicals have been great gateways... plus, when I play the droney weird stuff it is like just the stuff in the house, like the background that is always there...she zones out... We just say no to radio because of the inundation and lack of autonomy.

	3:57pm Cecile: Ramones are bubblegum pop, just fast, Sam. I mean, if I had kids, I'd let them listen to selected songs. Nothing about glue sniffing, but Rockaway Beach is a great song, and my nieces and nephews love it.

Both kids love Beat on the Brat but they know it's not advice, it's just silly to them. My daughter has no idea what a Junko Partner is but we loved singing it together.

	4:07pm dc pat: oh man, one time my daughter got some ice cream w/ gumis in it--mistake. Those things freeze at fairly low temperatures. They were hard as rocks.

	4:08pm Sam: There's not enough good quality stuff for kids out there. All the stuff aimed at kids is so terrible, it's low quality and hyperactive which makes kids spastic and obnoxious. There's not enough calm intelligent stuff, like Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.

	4:13pm Zannie: Hey Scott and Lyla! It's my birthday today (I'm 28 and live in Vancouver, BC) and it was pretty cool to wake up, turn on WFMU, and hear that "Happy Birthday" remix first thing in the morning! Great show :)
	4:14pm Mike East: Any thoughts from other parents on lying to kids about Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny? I'm very conflicted.
	4:17pm Dead Corporate Eyes: oh, we never really LIED to the kids, Mike...we just didn't discourage what they picked up everywhere else. I guess that's a form of lying, though. It's OK for kids to have a fantasy life, after all.
	4:18pm dc pat: Mike: to me it's a matter of making kids lives a magical paradise--or as much as possible. I still haven't admitted to my daughter there is no Santa even though she knows. I want them to think magic is real. I think my daughter still believes I got a ring for her from a mermaid.
	4:18pm Andrew Waterloo: My ex has always told my daughter that there is no Santa Claus or Easter Bunny. I've just always told her, well yah, but we'll pretend there is a Santa Claus and Easter Bunny cause daddy enjoys it.
	4:19pm hubba: i let the people my daughter interacts with define that situation (family members, classmates, fictional characters). I play along as a good capitalist, but not without some critical prodding. we are not a part of a community per se, nor are we church goers. my daughter believes in God, so that is where she stands on the issue. I let her tell me these things, and while i try my hand at rhetoric, she has an awesome shit storm wating down the road called "life," so however she wants to deal with that... god speed.
	4:19pm still b/p: My brother and his wife sat my niece down and gave her the straight story Christmas before last, rather than letting her figure it out or hear it elsewhere on her own. She was about nine, she was still all in, but they thought it was time.
	4:20pm Andrew Waterloo: I love Ben but I have to say there is a better chance of a kid being there than Ben being there.
	4:20pm dc pat: ...oh, well I guess I don't shy away from telling the kids there's no god. But Santa's fun, god is boring.

	4:23pm fred: I don't have kids, but I remember quite well how I reacted when I learned there was no Santa. No big deal, but it seemed to be a big deal to parents, so I played along for a while, it seemed to mean so much more to them. Don't misunderestimate kids

	4:25pm Andrew Waterloo: I just approach that stuff by asking my daughter questions about how she 'knows' these things that she believes. Or when she talks about God I offer alternate ideas, such as God has all the answers and I'll say, but Google has a lot of answers too.
	4:26pm Mike East: I convinced her that the Easter Bunny came while she was on a walk with her mom and I was at the supermarket. He/she hid eggs filled with cash and candy all over the house. I made Christmas just as magical. It kinda blew my mind how much she seemed to buy it.

	5:10pm hubba: Yeah, Fred had good points... I think Mike East was being fun. I know most of what I say on here is tongue and cheek. I don't want to expose myself and feel bad about my ability to perceive something differently than another person. At the same time, what we do as parents really is of no direct consequence since family is not the dominant institution for socialization. yet, what we do is part of how that little person makes sense, or non-sense, of the world. I know I'm still learning, and my daughter instructs me all the time
	5:18pm Mike East: @hubba. I agree with you. I was being fun, but it came from a real place. There was a moment where I had to outright lie ("Wait did you put these eggs here?!" "No, I was at the store and they were here when I got back"). I felt kind of bad about that. But I focused on how happy it seemed to make her and at the innocence of believing in magic.
	5:25pm hubba: It is that awareness that you are lying, and you want to relay the internal dilemna of wishing that it was shared magic, not manufactured... I love the feeling of constructing that expereince, but i wish someone would do it for me... and maybe that is what Fred was getting at. I keep thinking, when i let her design her reality, that i should be more forcefull in educating her to not believe in something used against her for other reasons... i want her to question everything, but even then, we all to some degree subordinate ourselves to mythology. It does not feel good knowing that.
	5:29pm Cecile: They will have plenty of time to question reality. Look at it as a little play you are putting on for your kids.
	5:31pm Cecile: once i knew about Santa Claus, then I knew I could grow up and be Santa for littler kids once I was a grownup.
	5:34pm hubba: I wanted to draw the line with the Easter Bunny. My partner said it is a Spring celebration... I could dig that. I do tell our daughter that from Halloween to New Year's is a festival of sorts, a non-stop party to keep warm and to share good vibes. But, I shut down in the springtime... it begins with Valentine's Day, and I'm reluctant to care about anything remotely Hallmark-like. But, it is not about me, so like a washed-up dinner theatre actor, the show goes on.
	5:37pm Cecile: I think there are far worse lies floating around told to their kids. Like grandmothers pretending to be moms. Or kids thinking their dad is really their dad. Or daddy has a second family we don't know about. Or Mommy went away because she doesn't love you, and don't go into the shed. I watch way too much ID TV. Anyway, hubba, she'll appreciate it. Most kids only care about Valentine's day for the candy. They think it's mushy and dumb, and their hand hurts addressing those little cards to the rest of the class (projecting...)
	5:38pm Cecile: But as a grown-up I think it's swell. At least for me.
	5:39pm Mike East: I should also mention that I recycled candy from Valentines Day and Halloween that is still floating around.
	5:41pm Cecile: And the deception continues...:D But seriously? You still have candy around? I bow to your willpower.
	5:43pm Mike East: There was sooo much! We pick at it once in a while, but I can only eat so many Nerds before feeling sick.
	5:44pm Cecile: we get a ton of kids in our neigborhood, but we scaled back. Actually turned off the light early this year.
	5:45pm shaken: i haven't heard this song in a long time and i forgot why but it makes me cry when it gets to "the sun" part
	5:46pm hubba: I go all out, at the last minute, but all out... i try and support anyone's perspective because there life is difficult enough to be overtly concered about right/wrong. So, does anyone evoke the "candy witch?" My partner tried to apply this entity in regards to the two tons of jellybeans yesterday... i think in retrun the kid gets plastic junk or money, sounds like a win-win... kid to mom: "the candy witch is not real."

Musicals have been great gateways... plus, when I play the droney weird stuff it is like just the stuff in the house, like the background that is always there...she zones out... We just say no to radio because of the inundation and lack of autonomy.

I play along as a good capitalist, but not without some critical prodding. we are not a part of a community per se, nor are we church goers. my daughter believes in God, so that is where she stands on the issue. I let her tell me these things, and while i try my hand at rhetoric, she has an awesome shit storm wating down the road called "life," so however she wants to deal with that... god speed.
	4:19pm still b/p: My brother and his wife sat my niece down and gave her the straight story Christmas before last, rather than letting her figure it out or hear it elsewhere on her own. She was about nine, she was still all in, but they thought it was time.

	5:10pm hubba: Yeah, Fred had good points... I think Mike East was being fun. I know most of what I say on here is tongue and cheek. I don't want to expose myself and feel bad about my ability to perceive something differently than another person. At the same time, what we do as parents really is of no direct consequence since family is not the dominant institution for socialization. yet, what we do is part of how that little person makes sense, or non-sense, of the world. I know I'm still learning, and my daughter instructs me all the time
	5:18pm Mike East: @hubba. I agree with you. I was being fun, but it came from a real place. There was a moment where I had to outright lie ("Wait did you put these eggs here?!" "No, I was at the store and they were here when I got back"). I felt kind of bad about that. But I focused on how happy it seemed to make her and at the innocence of believing in magic.
	5:25pm hubba: It is that awareness that you are lying, and you want to relay the internal dilemna of wishing that it was shared magic, not manufactured... I love the feeling of constructing that expereince, but i wish someone would do it for me... and maybe that is what Fred was getting at. I keep thinking, when i let her design her reality, that i should be more forcefull in educating her to not believe in something used against her for other reasons... i want her to question everything, but even then, we all to some degree subordinate ourselves to mythology. It does not feel good knowing that.

I do tell our daughter that from Halloween to New Year's is a festival of sorts, a non-stop party to keep warm and to share good vibes. But, I shut down in the springtime... it begins with Valentine's Day, and I'm reluctant to care about anything remotely Hallmark-like. But, it is not about me, so like a washed-up dinner theatre actor, the show goes on.

Most kids only care about Valentine's day for the candy. They think it's mushy and dumb, and their hand hurts addressing those little cards to the rest of the class (projecting...)
