Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Thanks for listening to this FOUR HOUR extravaganza my friends. It sure was fun playing all that music and just dropping in my interview stuff here and there. Very hard to do that in a one-hour format. I want to thank Brendan Burke of the OWS De-Escalation Team for being my special guest. My FIRST special guest I think on Dusty. Well ... maybe Grandma Phyllis. Anyway ... as always I wish I could have the hour back, because I always think of cool questions later on, or wish I hadn't said some of the dumb stuff I said. Life is like that. For some reason, as I am typing this, 12:59 am April 16th, 2012, I am feeling a good deal of visceral anxiety. Mostly that I might suck, which is a very real possibility, and that my gear is wearing out. My micro-cassette recorder (the model is now no longer made by Radio Shack {and it is the unit that delivers the classic Dusty sound}). Also, I am down to my last dual-cassette deck. The special model whose model number I won't even mention anymore. Damn. Why can't things just be around forever? Why? Why must obsolescence follow us and the products we love around like some deranged hyena, waiting to bite and inflict pain and virulent rabies on us? That's how it feels. Anyway ... I am just trying to hold it together here. The wheels just feel real damned wobbly right now. Thanks for all your support and loyalty listener. Seriously. It;s important to me and to TDS. Onward we go, Another week. Let me know if the sound quality gets to bad and I'll go digital, but it will suck and it would probably be the end for Dusty. That normalcy. That sterile sameness. Ugh. Take care and have a great week. Always remember.

Clay

PS - THANK YOU FABIO!!!!!!

I remember being in elementary school when Technotronic had their hits. My dad loathed them. To this day, if he wants to mock dance music or rap, he starts doing Technotronic in a whiny voice...

@Caryn: Remember when Clay did a riff on Julie's goth music, "I'll Be The One Who's Wearing Black"? Pure goldeness :)

Whenever I'm doing a riff on Bauhaus or other 70s/80s early goth music, for some reason I always sing to the tune of The Church's "Shadow Cabinet"--which isn't goth at all. I don't know why, maybe it's just easier to make up stuff to that tune..
  3:19pm
Caryn:

Clay, are you going to be playing any of those songs you were talking about that you hate but are trying to expose yourself to in the hopes of liking them?

The Monkees are equally fabulous.
  3:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

This is a good one, many FMU DJs have played this in tribute to Davy, but I first heard the Boyce & Hart version a couple years ago (they wrote this and several others for the Monkees). That's also a great arrangement.

When I was a kid I liked "Sometime in the Morning." Still do, come to think of it.

wildneil:

My sister would let me out of my skinner box and we would watch the Monkees in the 70's...those were the days! Freed from the baby cage! I am not kidding, I used to climb out of the playpen, so my dad made a big wodden roof on my playpen, compelte with access hatch...this is why I am "wild" neil
  3:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

I've never seen The Monkees show, but I like that Mike has actually written many songs (including Linda Ronstadt and The Stone Ponies' "Different Drum").
  3:31pm
Woo:

Thank you for keeping the Davy tribute going. Isn't tonight the Hall of Fame thing? Isn't there a certain group missing? Hell, Tommy James should be in there too.
  3:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

Sweet Cherry Wine!
Jonesy played this for Easter, he seems to play this quite a bit.
  3:33pm
Parq:

"Only God has the right .." -- amazing how theistic some of these 60s message songs were. Remember the last verse of "Signs"?
  3:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

I literally have more Tommy James with and without The Shondells, "than you could ever need, want, or even physically tolerate".
  3:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Parq: Huge focus on the spiritual throughout the 60s, including in social justice.
Tommy soon after became a "Christian" singer, with lyrics that actually weren't particularly religious.
  3:35pm
Mike East:

yes, Matt (re: Jonesy). Makes me happy every time he plays it. I believe I was dancing around the house on Sunday (which is typical between 12-3)

Matt, dig it, but it's like all the references to getting married in rockabilly music -- these guys were supposedly the apocalypse when it came to traditional values, and most of them seemingly were more traditional than I am.

Clay, do you have Lady Eleanor by Lindasfarne?
  3:39pm
Mr Donut:

Damn - I always thought this was Paul McCartney
  3:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Jimbo: Peter Tork, now he's a greater mystery to me than the rest. Anyone here a particular fan of his? I just know from a recent RS article that Pete and Mike were the musicians who wanted to take The Monkees serious direction, while Mickey and Davy were actors who were okay with the way it was.

@Cecile: Too much of anything I guess, but I've always been of the opinion that Queen doesn't have a bad song--much like Irwin said about YLT. Take any album, and play at a party; you'll be guaranteed to have at least a "good" background the entire time.

ok so what do folks think about Maureen Tucker's active vocalisation of support for the Fascist Tea Party in America?

@?: She was great in her time, and hasn't really been in the spotlight at all since. So she's taken't a turn to the Tea Party in her old age, let her do what she wants.

Now as some commenter lately pointed out about Victoria Jackson, she sounds dangerously nuts. She grew up in a crazy Christian-ist family to begin with, then when she lost her fame she started acting ever more batshit.

What kind of neighborhood lets its watch pack heat? Our neighborhood watch is not allowed to do that. They have to call the cops.

  4:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Mr Donut: The average person wasn't hollering for these laws--what could be a stronger impact is boycotting the NRA. I support all law-abiders' right to possess a firearm, but the NRA has become extremist in the past several decades, allowing for no reasonable, "responsible" gun ownership rules. If any friends are members, tell them to stop sending money to the NRA.

taste and politics are not necessarily linked
  4:55pm
Caryn:

@Ralphine: I think you have fallen victim to a syndrome Stephen Fry once wrote about. Over time, memorable quotes end up being attributed to certain figures even if they've never said them. Churchill, Wilde, Dorothy Parker and Groucho Marx are some of the most common figures to whom quotes are attributed even if they never said them. I guess they are so famous for pithy phrases, that if you're unsure who originally said something, you automatically attribute it to one of them.
  4:56pm

@Cecile - but aesthetics and politics usually are linked

The arrangement's very similar to Coven, but I prefer Coven's version. (The singer was from Indiana, but she had an Alanis Morrisette-like twinge in her vocal!)
  6:00pm
northguineahills:

I heard "One Tin Soldier" for the first time at my parents' church, before it went all fundy. (circa 1991)
  6:00pm
frances:

this version still has me dancing in my room. awkwardly but sincerely.
  6:01pm
northguineahills:

Yes, the Original Caste are from Canada.

  6:02pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks for joining us Cecile! You actually got 3 hours of Clay today!
  6:02pm

  6:02pm
Cecile:

I know! It's cool.

  6:04pm
Caryn:

Today there's been an exceptionally high percentage of songs I've sung along to on WFMU...
  6:05pm
dale:

yes, she was a poppy. baker gurvitz army, man!!!
  6:06pm
Parq:

Oh damn, Clay, I was all set for that first note (following the intro) of Trower's riff, and you cut away!
  6:10pm
Philo Gristle:

Occupy Louisville here right now on local tv news....
  6:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

Brendan, in-studio interview!
  6:13pm
Caryn:

Oh come on, Clay. Alice Cooper is Alice Cooper. It's not a band!
  6:13pm
Matt from Springfield:

No 98 pound weakling where Clay is concerned!

Brendan might enjoy this old Minor Threat shot of mine: http://www.flickr.com/photos/francesrust/3510920227/
& now I sit back & enjoy~!
  6:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

Frances! Virginia represents!
  6:17pm
Philo Gristle:

Caryn, any occupy movement in Finland?
  6:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

I went to Occupy Congress and took photographs. I was trying not to get arrested but was aware that a similar thing to frances could've happened. At least Occupy Congress was a permitted march.
  6:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

I already posted this link, but to those who haven't seen my photos:

kat330:

Mollusk, Matt! Thanks for that link.
  6:21pm
Caryn:

@PG: naah. Early on, there were a couple of small rallies in sympathy to the movement, but no OWS here in general.
  6:22pm
Jim:

Matt, see if you can open this page. It's the scene from that Bible movie. The growl is at 2:43.

  6:22pm
frances:

@Matt: Don't let fear get in your way, just make sure you always have an escape route in sight ;) and if it hits the way, hunker down & cope.
I hope to make contact with Occupy in Paris and Amsterdam next month, even if it's just to make a donation and encouragement.
  6:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Jim: I'll see if I can open that at home. Thanks.
@frances: Good advice, thanks!
  6:24pm
Philo Gristle:

Caryn, kinda figures. I always felt pretty apathetic over there.
  6:24pm
northguineahills:

what's Brendan's last name? I have a friend who's w/ Occupy and is curious (he's at work and can't tune in right now)
  6:25pm
frances:

Brendan Burke: http://globalchangetelevision.org/2012/03/27/occupy-wall-street-brendan-burke-occupier/
  6:26pm
northguineahills:

danke!, frances!
  6:27pm
Caryn:

@PG: yeah, there are other movements having rallies (today was the SETA rally), but I think most people here figure we're such a minor figure on the financial markets that having an OWS movement here would be pointless.
  6:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

Occupy Jameson! ;)
  6:29pm
northguineahills:

In Novemeber-December, I saw Occupy in Reykjavik, Berlin, and Mexico City.
  6:29pm
frances:

wow, i'm really looking forward to tracking down music by both of Brendan's bands as well ! what a swell first in studio guest~
  6:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

That seems true--all other guests have been pre-recorded street "interviews".
  6:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

Matt from Springfield:

Anarchists and direct-democracy certainly don't get things done very quickly, but we've also seen the other advantages of such a lack of hierarchy.
  6:34pm
Philo Gristle:

@Caryn: SETA and animal rights were always more prominent to my recollection than any other protest. Whether an illusion created by media, not sure.
  6:35pm
kat330:

@NGH: How wonderful to have an exciting life traveling far and wide!
  6:36pm
frances:

Sincere Question Clay: What does Brendan think of the new slick site: http://www.occupy.com/ ? Does he see it as step forward to cast a wider net or does he not dig that direction, just curious, thanks y'all !!
  6:37pm
northguineahills:

...and now I'm broke as I haven't worked since July. (might have an interview next week, keeping fingers crossed)
  6:38pm
Philo Gristle:

@Matt: Thanks for sharing the photos from Occupy Congress -- great set!
  6:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

Good luck to you, NGH. Caryn as well.
Everyone cross your fingers!
  6:39pm
Caryn:

@PG: yeah, SETA, animal rights, anti-war, students, anarchists and the occasional "take back the streets" street party are about it. And the May Day Communist parades.
  6:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Philo,Kat: Thank you! Just a citizen-photojournalist, inspired by Clay's broadcasts! :)
  6:41pm
Steve from SF:

Starbucks is fascism?
Really? The same as concentration camps and forced migration? Really?
  6:43pm
Caryn:

Keeping fingers crossed, NGH!

Just found out by e-mail that there may be a publishing editor job available soon, but it's unsure if it's even going to exist, let alone that I'll get it vs. the other applicants. I just hope the position will actually become a reality... But on a lighter note, this weekend I will pay off the last bits of my student loan. Yay!
  6:43pm
kat330:

@Matt: You are an indefatigable force to reckon with -- I have great admiration!
And I echo the good vibration hopes and well wishes to NGH and Caryn for gainful employment ASAP: }}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} There ya go. That should do it! :>
  6:48pm
Philo Gristle:

@Caryn -- from my youth I most vividly recall the takeover of Lepakko (peaceful takeover of an old building by young musicians), and then when I left Finland, Nokia bulldozed it over for a parking lot.
  6:48pm
Caryn:

I seem to remember the US exported more oil last year than it imported. So at the moment, the "dependence on foreign oil" statement seems to be just an excuse to drill in nature reserves. But what the hell do I know.

morr:

I am an anarchist. I wish no harm to any other. I am am anarchist because there is no other way for me.

I knocked my head up against a brick wall politically for years until I read a description of anarchism by albert camus. 'No one person has the right to govern another' and that you don't have to wait for liberation but that it is there for the taking right now. One just has to subscribe to the above sentiment.

That is however not the end but the beginning. For me it was like a rebirth and I have never looked back. I have always declared by stance - for many years and I am 'materially' the worse of for it - hurrah!

It is something no one will ever take away from me and it is something I will never enforce upon another.

The media use the word anarchy when they mean chaos. I think we need to stop being reactionary to the crypto-fascist bourgeois agenda - they won't listen (probably). If only for ourselves alone and our own sanity we just need to keep stating our stance.

Love over fear forever!
  6:51pm
Matt from Springfield:

Um, just what is the caller's point again?
He needs to focus, or else tell him you gotta go.
  6:52pm
kat330:

@Clay: I'm far behind most of your commenters in hearing your program(s) over these past few months of exploring FMU beyond 7SD, but so glad I caught you here and now. Thank you for your passion, and thank you for giving care as much as taking care.
  6:52pm
sua:

damn. whiny activists turn my ears off.
  6:52pm
Caryn:

@PG: yeah, the bulldozing of Lepakko was a day of misery. (The suspicious burning of the VR:n makasiinit was a pain too.) Lepakko-adjacently, Radio City started operations again. Don't know if it's any good anymore, though.
  6:53pm
Rob:

Hey Clay, whoa alot of energy on todays show! Your speading vibes like some strange Tesla invention. Good work, Clay! Thanks!
  6:54pm
Chico:

Divine world order, not new world order

that is all..
  6:55pm
morr:

'whiny activists'? The young are full of energy and enthusiasm - it is our duty to nurture and encourage greater coherence and effectiveness.
  6:55pm
frances:

@Morr: Well said! I'm an old Existentialist myself & found the same rebirth experience. Anarchists are my well loved and supported sisters & brothers. Keep spreading the word & being a positive force~!
  6:56pm
Philo Gristle:

Probably not, though I take that as a good sign... Radio City was a huge deal when it started, the closest thing I had to WFMU back in mid-80s.
  6:56pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caller: FOCUS. Then do something about it. Even going to an Occupy event is a good start...
  6:56pm

Great show Clay!

Good night kat!
Terrific show, it's gone all over the place, and we're still back in time for dinner :)
  6:58pm
Philo Gristle:

Late buzz... oops. Great show, Clay, your dedication is much appreciated.
  6:59pm
Philo Gristle:

g'night!
  6:59pm
morr:

We all need to connect and to stay connected.
It is never over - it can be just beginning - it is up to us!
  6:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

Take care everyone, I always enjoy chatting with you!

Thanks Clay! We are the 99%! Always remember!
  6:59pm
Caryn:

Great 4 hours, Clay!

@Philo: I think nowadays the closest station to WFMU in Helsinki is Radio Helsinki. I believe they're freeform. Little Steven has a good show on it.
  7:02pm
Philo Gristle:

Thanks Caryn! I dl their podcasts on occasion, plenty of Radio City people in the mix.
  7:05pm
Caryn:

Yeah, I think they may be continuing the spirit of the original Radio City. No wonder they're considered the country's best radio station now, even if they have a very small listener base.
  10:19am
seang:

You're the best, Clay!!
