Charanams

Queens sextet Charanams adroitly blends South India's carnatic classical music and instrumentation with jazz improv and other influences. Led by gifted mother-and-daughter team Nivedita and Sam ShivRaj, Charanams won WNYC's Battle of the Boroughs last year. We won't make the band do battle at WFMU, but Charanams' Studio B engagement does kicks off an ambitious spring campaign, which continues with assaults on Drom in the East Village on May 4 and LIC Bar in Long Island City on May 7.

Charanams will launch a kickstarter campaign in a few days to fund the costs of making a debut cd: http://kickstarter.com/profile/charanams

Listener comments!

  6:23pm pedro silveira:

gorgeous music, from where is this tindra group?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Your DJ:

Thanks Pedro - they're from Norway.
  6:29pm Eric:

sounds like a Hurdy Gurdy
  6:29pm pedro silveira:

it reminded me of the last track of hera's "where my complete beloved is" album, but that one is a ukrainian folk song. anyway, this playlist is fitting for the actually quite chilly night here in south brazil. thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Your DJ:

Hi Eric - the Ajvar & Sterz track was the Hurdy Gurdy, yes...
  6:44pm Karen in Sleepy Hollow:

So who went out for Record Store Day? I just got back. It took looking in a few stores but I did find The Rough Guide to Psychedelic Africa and The Rough Guide to African Roots Revival.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Your DJ:

I missed it - sadly I don't make it too far out of Hoboken on show days! Plus I just did a bit of record shopping in PDX, trying to keep things under control!
  7:12pm Karen in Sleepy Hollow:

I've never bought the Rough Guide vinyl before. Nice that you get a download code with lots of extras.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Your DJ:

Kinda the new trend in album-releases is vinyl-only plus mp3 releases - and no cd! Although I think the Rough Guides do also still come in cd form.
  7:32pm Karen in Sleepy Hollow:

Yes, I have a few cds but the bonus material with the download is a nice touch. The Stax box of 45s came with a download too but no extras.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Katie:

Beautiful!
  8:13pm jht:

It says on the playlist they have a kickstarter going, but the link just links to an empty profile. When will that thing start?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm Your DJ:

Actually - yes, the campaign launches in a few days - my bad - I'll clarify that. Thanks!
  8:34pm Marmalade Kitty:

loving these guys! aweeeesome!
  8:42pm Jack:

Rob, thanks for this show. All your shows are great, but this one was particularly nice. Thanks again!
  8:48pm Karen in Sleepy Hollow:

Another great live set! You sure find some cool folks to come in for all of us to enjoy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Your DJ:

Thanks guys!
  3:15pm LEE KING:

CAN YOU SAY "THE SKY'S THE LIMIT...
  10:03pm Jonathan:

Charanams guitarist Jason Goldstein is a good friend of mine. I loved hearing their live set, and I look forward to supporting their Kickstarter campaign. Thanks for airing their music and the entertaining and informative interview segments.
