I respect tree huggers, but Sonny took it too far.

chop Scott:

JOE!! Yes---so happy to be hearing you and out of the rain--Cheers!
  12:13am
jeff-m:

Hey Joe, funny.. "i was like I know this guy's voice" and came to look
  12:15am
jeff-m:

Evening to ya Chop Scott. Rain is wonderful. Been having squirrels come and check the pots on my porch stares for water lately...
Avatar 12:15am
Joe McG:

Hey, Chop Scott! Yes, it's a nice inside night tonight. Hey, jeff-m! He's unmistakable. Is that the word?
Avatar 12:18am
Joe McG:

Any squirrels there right now?
  12:20am
jeff-m:

nope, but I felt bad for them and put a water dish out. THose pots are usually empty all Winter with water in them is why. This is awesome info for your playlist. Glad I can offer it up.
Avatar 12:22am
Joe McG:

Thanks, jeff. I'm always interested in what's happening with the squirrels. On a night like tonight, they may prefer some twigs and a wee blankee to nest in. Also some cashews.
  12:24am
ratbone:

fly translove airlines.. getcha there on time
  12:26am
jeff-m:

ha, maybe I'll cut some trash bags into little squares so they can use them as raincoats. Awesome show so far by the way too

Great idea, jeff. Also very good for the calendar.

I mean, of course, the 2013 Squirrels in Raincoats calendar.

That was a great PSA! I've been doing art to your show : )

Hey, Eli--I hope your art is full of colours. :)

Why, shucks, thanks, CS! I appreciate your patronage, as always.

Thought I recognized those lyrics when I tuned in!! Marvelous soul cover of that song!

Hey Joe! Hey everyone!

Matt from Springfield:

RSD!!!!!!! Record Store Day!!!!
Surprised no one has mentioned that yet! Anyone go out and get record deals yesterday?
Avatar 1:08am
Joe McG:

Hey, Matt! What's shakin' in Springfield?
  1:10am
Matt from Springfield:

I had a pretty good day of record shoppin' and hookah smokin'!
(In fact, I'm wearing last year's WFMU t-shirt RIGHT NOW! I wore it record shopping). Very few vinyl record stores left in N. VA until you get into DC, but the Record and Tape Exchange (RTX) in Fairfax City is a godsend!
  1:13am
Matt from Springfield:

Joe reads US Weekly, so YOU don't have to!
  1:15am
slugluv1313:

yikes, Drew Barrymore! and i thought that *i* was a dork! (embarrassed to say that she is also an Aquarian)
  1:18am
slugluv1313:

i think Richie Havens lived in Hoboken for a while too?
Avatar 1:19am
Joe McG:

Hey, slugluv1313! Drew loves you and California, too. Richie must've had the good sense to leave Hoboken for greener shores. Just kidding, Hoboken!
  1:20am
Matt from Springfield:

@slugluv: Andy Cohen of Shut Up Weirdo "fame" once worked with Richie Havens' wife (or else his wife did). Gave him advice on how to get rid of a rat problem cheaply and easily!
Avatar 1:21am
Joe McG:

ha ha ha!
  1:23am
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, you did a PSA? Already?
I'll listen for it when I do the Archive, but find another to read after Single File, as per usual! :)
Avatar 1:24am
Joe McG:

Good idea, Matt! I love PSAs. The other was just a message from Oprah. Some words of inspiration.
  1:25am
slugluv1313:

ha ha! no prob re: Hoboken -- i have been here since 1981 -- waaaaaaay before it was *affluent* - so make all the jokes you want!

what is the rat advice!?!
  1:25am
slugluv1313:

oh wow i missed OPRAH!!!??
Avatar 1:26am
Joe McG:

She'll be back!
  1:27am
Jsck:

The front page graphic is quite funny to me...all the spin...
  1:27am
Matt from Springfield:

@slugluv: If you plaster over a rathole, they'll just claw through it. You can cover the hole with mesh wire and plaster over that, but rats will chew through the wire. So....you crush glass shards into mesh wire, cover the hole and plaster that over. The rats will bleed to death chewing through it. And, according to Andy, it will stink for 4 days; and after that, nothing!
  1:30am
slugluv1313:

oh no! what a horrible way to die! i think i will stick to *preventative measures" in the form of nutty FELINES
  1:31am
Matt from Springfield:

@slugluv: The "natural" way, that really is the best way to do it! Plus it will save you on cat food.
  1:33am
Matt from Springfield:

Hmm, didn't know TJ took a razor to a Bible and re-arranged, like Bill Burroughs (or a serial killer)...
  1:36am
Matt from Springfield:

Wooooohoooooooo! Go Joe! Go Record Store Day!
Too expensive? Find a better store! One that has a lot of $2 used vinyl, like mine!
Avatar 1:37am
Joe McG:

I did get a Del Shannon album for $5 I may play later!
  1:39am
Matt from Springfield:

Live James Brown! Unnh! Aaooow!

$1.60 vinyl, 20% off used vinyl today only, and various RSD promotions. I got a LP/digital download package of contemporary African music for $20!
  1:41am
Matt from Springfield:

Del is awesome; I could talk all night about the cool stuff I picked up--the collector in me snagged an original issue Badfinger "No Dice" for $8 (down from $10!) and the Long Riders (last week! cowpoke!) 12-5-60[?], sealed.
Avatar 1:41am
Joe McG:

Nice score, Matt! All I really wanted was the new Lee Hazlewood comp on Light in the Attic on vinyl, but they didn't have it...
  1:42am
Matt from Springfield:

One 70s/80s looking album I saw but didn't pick up, speaking of this song, was Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark and Chris Hillman together.
Avatar 1:42am
Joe McG:

I never bought that, etiher. 80s haircuts on 60s dudes make me nervous.
  1:44am
Matt from Springfield:

O MON DIEU!!! Jackie DeShannon/Searchers en français!!!!

Yeah, I wasn't out there until the late afternoon so I took what was left (still a fine selection though). And yes, 80s haircuts on 60s dudes, or 60s song titles as 80s movie titles, also make me nervous.
  1:47am
Matt from Springfield:

Hard to do a tribute directly to Dick Clark, but this is about as close as you can get!
Avatar 1:49am
Joe McG:

I didn't get the Knack live in L.A., either!
  1:50am
Brian in UK:

Mornin' Joe & folks. Sounds like you still have a selection of record stores; over here it is getting bad.
Joe, did you hear Michael Shelley's interview with the leg-end that is Nick Lowe?
Avatar 1:52am
Joe McG:

I did, Brian! It took a lot of courage to have him rate every one of his albums!
  1:52am
Matt from Springfield:

Morning Brian. In London 5 years ago they seemed to be much ahead of the curve, with turntabling more established in their club culture. But I suppose it can be pretty dire if you live outside of central London.
Avatar 1:56am
Joe McG:

@Brian: I think Michael did an outstanding job. I was really jealous, I would love to chat with Nick Lowe. He recorded with Del Shannon at one point, incidentally!
  1:57am
Matt from Springfield:

I made sure to like the RTX on FB, so I'm aware of their special sales and promotions in the future--not that I was crushed that I missed a special RSD appearance by Colin Hay (Men At Work) in that very store earlier this afternoon, but admittedly it would have been cool to see him, especially in my little hole in the wall.
  1:58am
Brian in UK:

This film base on Graham Jones book is due out soon. He works for Proper Records so knows what he is talking about. A sad tale.

  1:59am
Matt from Springfield:

The girl at the counter said he played an acoustic show, but was in an "emotional state" because one of his bandmates just died. Weird. But still something I would've liked to experience.

According to Wiki that must be Greg Ham, MAW saxophone/keyboard/flute player who just died April 19. RIP, brother from Down Under.
  2:00am
Matt from Springfield:

LOL!!! "Let's Go To The Disco" by the Disco Brothers! And it's not even in a disco style for 1977!

What country are they from? The style sounds a bit like LA zydeco.
  2:01am
Brian in UK:

Breaking down barrios, Matt.
  2:05am
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, non-auto-centric friends at WFMU! Despite being an advocacy piece against AAA, that was thought-provoking. The tone reminds me of various anti-Army Corps of Engineers pieces I've read/seen over many years.

(It's obvious WFMU is not burdened from having AAA as a sponsor, but is O Magazine now calling the shots around here or what???!
  2:11am
Brian in UK:

Mike Sin played 'Holy Mackeral' yesterday!
Avatar 2:12am
Joe McG:

Was that Paul Williams' group?
  2:12am
Matt from Springfield:

Mike Sin's show is always great, I need to check the Archive.

Del yodeling!!! Woooo!!!
This old album is in MONO I hope?!
  2:15am
slugluv1313:

ah DISCO BROTHERS!!!!! i KNEW i had that record in my collection, just TOTALLY FORGOT it was Nick Lowe!
  2:15am
Brian in UK:

Believe so. Or was that 'Holy Moly?'
Avatar 2:16am
Joe McG:

@Matt: All Mono, baby!
  2:17am
Brian in UK:

Was it a Farfisa organ on Del's records?
Avatar 2:17am
Joe McG:

It's a very nice LP from Brian's homeland.
Avatar 2:18am
Joe McG:

@Brian: No, it was something called a Musitron that a friend of his invented.
  2:20am
Brian in UK:

Always sounded like it was straining to get out of the casing.
  2:22am
Brian in UK:

If you played this blind to people Joe they would never guess Thailand.
Avatar 2:25am
Joe McG:

I know, it's great, isn't it?
  2:32am
Matt from Springfield:

The sublime Shirley and Dolly Collins. I heard them from another room but not surprised that was them!

Tir Na Gog, whadda name!
  2:33am
Matt from Springfield:

"The Ballad of Lucy Jordan"! (Yet another) amazing one by Shel Silverstein. Love Marianne's synthpop arrangement and vocal.
Avatar 2:36am
Joe McG:

@Matt: I think "Tir Na Gog" is some kind of Irish netherworld or something!
  2:37am
Matt from Springfield:

Would make sense. They were prob British Isles people naming themselves in Gaelic or possibly another Celtic language.
Avatar 2:38am
Joe McG:

Tir Na Gog is sort of thought of as the Irish ISB, although it's not really an accurate description. It's just 'cause it's two dudes, I think!
  2:41am
tahomajohn:

Hi Joe...great show! Can only tune in for a few minutes and then i am off for another day of tooling around Istanbul... going to see Whirling Dervishes today... yippee!
  2:42am
Matt from Springfield:

Sounds fun john, so very much to see in Istanbul--I'd like to go someday.
Avatar 2:42am
Joe McG:

Wow, lucky you are, tahomajohn! Glad you could check in.
  2:45am
Brian in UK:

Hey tahomajohn, you lucky man.

It's Tir Na Nog, I believe.
  2:47am
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, you're right Brian!

Actually it's: "Tír na nÓg", according to Wiki. No, it's not a Unicode computer text error! :)
  2:47am
tahomajohn:

Hi Brian! I wanna thank you, btw, for some great info on istanbul you gave me a few months ago about music and eats in Kadıköy... went there yesterday...awesome!
  2:48am
Brian in UK:

Get up the Galata Tower if the weather is good.
  2:49am
Brian in UK:

Guess you heard about Levon's passing, john?
  2:51am
tahomajohn:

The weather has been great.. we went up Galata tower a few days ago... lotsa pictures. My feet are about to fall off after a week of walking all over town every day.. and a week more to go...the poor li'l dogs...
  2:52am
tahomajohn:

No, hadn't heard about Levon... sad to hear.
  2:53am
Matt from Springfield:

Prairie Wind is a great Neil album, saw the movie "Heart of Gold" at the time as well.
  2:54am
Matt from Springfield:

Re: Levon et al, normally there's someone on WFMU to play a tribute for virtually *anybody* in music, regardless of how obscure/popular they were. These past two weeks however, have been really heavy on RIPs. Have to stretch tributes into next week and still might not finish them all...
Avatar 2:54am
Joe McG:

I saw that in Tampa, Florida!
  2:55am
Brian in UK:

I'm right there with you, brother. Ferry trip up the Bosphorus will take the weight off your feet & a fish sandwich from the boats at the Galata Bridge. Have fun.
  2:59am
Joe D.:

I LOVED the readings
  2:59am
tahomajohn:

Will do... and the restaurant Ciya Sofrasi is so amazing we will return.. Thanks again Brian!
  2:59am
Matt from Springfield:

Aaah Joe, psyched me out, thought you were reading a quote from Neil or something like that! :P

Anyways, great show! Have a good night everyone!
  3:01am
Brian in UK:

Take it steady & have a good week, everyone.
Avatar 11:20am
Joe McG:

Thanks for the Tír na nÓg correction, guys. Maybe I could look at the friggin' album cover! :)
