Happy May Day!
  7:04pm
A. Librarian:

Each year, archives, libraries, museums, and historic preservation organizations set aside May 1 to participate in MayDay, an initiative to protect the nation's cultural heritage.
  7:05pm
Burl Ives:

Happy May Day! Say, how come WFMU never plays my records?
  7:07pm
Caryn:

Happy May Day! Apparently by Thunk Tank standards our whole nation is communist, since we celebrate this holiday like crazy. Only Christmas is bigger.
  7:08pm
Cliff:

Caryn, by many American's standards, all of Western Europe and even Canada is Communist.
  7:10pm
Burl Ives:

Don't eat the brown acid!
  7:10pm
Philo Gristle:

No more rain! No more rain!
  7:13pm
Caryn:

@Cliff: true enough. Of course, we are the place where Karl Marx and Lenin had their one and only meeting, so I suspect that might work against us in some people's minds...
  7:14pm
Phil:

Bronwyn: You just said the "S" word. Dump opportunity missed. -Phil formerly from Belleville, now from San Mateo, CA.
  7:15pm
Fredericks:

Who's got the "dump" button?
  7:15pm
Philo Gristle:

I heard that the Finn abbreviation SF was known in the US as Soviet Finland.
  7:16pm
Curator Dave:

I'll buy a climber some shoes.
  7:16pm
Phil:

You were talking about your class — said something like "lay pipe & shit like that."

what is jay's new motor sickle? a 'bunch of boxes on it' makes me think he got a bmw dualsport
  7:17pm
Fredericks:

Shoes for Industry!
  7:17pm
kat330:

@Caryn: I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain our elementary school world geography books lumped Finland (by color) with the USSR. Very strange to hear from JT about the historical animosity between those countries.
  7:17pm
Listener John from NJ who lives in NJ:

@Caryn: I don't understand what you meant about Lenin & Marx meeting. Lenin was 13 yrs old and living at home in Russia when Karlo Marx died in 1883.
  7:18pm
JayBe:

Me thinks Dale is right.

Or a Triumph. Tiger. Rrroarrr.
  7:19pm
Listener John from NJ who lives in NJ:

@kat330 Were your history books published before 1917? Finland would have been an unwilling part of the Russian Empire at the time . . .
  7:19pm
Upsidedown Mike:

I like that everyone is reporting the "S" word mess-up as sort-of reporting the DJs as suspicious.
  7:19pm
Ralphine:

I'm pretty sure that Bronwyn said "shit like that."
  7:19pm
Chris:

That mention of living of Fear reminded me of this really good documentary.

The Power of Nightmares?! Yes, that's by Adam Curtis. Download every Adam Curtis documentary you can. He is amazing!
  7:22pm
kat330:

@LJfNJWLiNJ: Ya know, I ALMOST added that I'm not THAT old. :) And now seeing the phrase "Soviet Finland," I'm pretty sure that's what we were taught in the Midwest in the '60s.
  7:23pm
Philo Gristle:

I hope the new Triumphs don't leak oil like the old ones... our stream is leaking oil though. Blip. Blip. Blip.
  7:24pm
kat330:

Probably the history revisionists of Texas textbook infamy.
  7:27pm
JayBe:

New Triumphs are like new Japanese bikes. Finally awesome.
  7:28pm
JayBe:

I can hear you guys drinking. Ill drink to that.
  7:28pm
Philo Gristle:

Or old Japanese bikes. Still awesome.
  7:29pm
JayBe:

Yes. Still awesome. Two wheels however you like it.
  7:31pm
Caryn:

@PG: I like to think of us as the SciFi nation. It's a preferable SF.

@LJ: yeah, they didn't actually meet, but interestingly, a restaurant here used to advertise itself as the one place where they met. In reality, just Lenin and Stalin hung out there. Still, whether we refer to the "stories for tourists" or the real history, I think some people would draw negative conclusions about the area.

@caryn I wanted to get my email at sci.fi when I was still there, but didn't fit my area or budget.
  7:37pm
dale:

jay, arrange a meet up at hawks nest or bear mtn - i'll be there!
  7:38pm
Philo Gristle:

If I was made of money, and had an actual commute a Guzzi V7 would be just fine. As it is, I'm happy with my 30+ year old sub-$1K Honda 250. Good way to learn basic mechanics.

[Obama's been addressing the nation for the past several minutes, FYI]

Listener John from NJ who lives in NJ:

@ Caryn: That's really interesting. I gather that you actually are in Finland today.

Do you know if the Soviets actually occupied Finland during or after WWII? I know that Finland & the USSR went to war in 1940.

Caryn, I always read in the newspaper that people in Finland score high on international happiness surveys, and that the schools are the best in the world. Sounds good to me!

@kat330 -- When I was in elementary school in the late 1960s/early 1970s, we had to learn to spell the names of all kinds of countries that no longer existed (e.g., Bechuanaland, Sidi Ifni) because the spelling textbooks were really, really, really outdated.
  7:50pm
kat330:

Cool! Yosemite is my "happy place"!
  7:50pm
Ralphine:

Speak for yourself about that dying part.

Kat in Chicago:

That's the other Kat asking, I have been silent thus far :) Great interview!
  7:51pm
kat330:

Hi, Kat!
  7:52pm
Kat in Chicago:

Hi, Kat!
  7:52pm
kat330:

I used to live in Chicago, too. Well, in Evanston.
  7:52pm
Kat in Chicago:

Close enough. I was in Rogers Park for a very long time, and worked at Northwestern for a very short time.
  7:53pm
Reality Check:

@JayBe: The US economy dipped back down to a 2.2% annual rate this past quarter, just as it did last spring. An economy needs 4% or better to see clear job and income growth. We have been stagnating since 2007 now. -- So expect to keep hearing *plenty* more from the "in" party about their "great" foreign policy and military work.
  7:53pm
I X Key!:

YES!!! Halfdome in Yosemite! It's beautiful! Also, Washburn print is really beautiful!
  7:54pm
Philo Gristle:

@LJFNJWLINJ Finland? Happy? I always thought it had the highest suicide rates and severe alcohol problems.... but I've been gone for more than a decade so maybe its better now. School system does get high marks these days.
  7:54pm

Haha, I have many psychological issues but multiple personality isn't one of them!

We are TRULY two different Kats. Your ISP check should confirm that, Bronwyn. :)

It probably protects his neck from the sun.
  7:56pm
kat330:

@I X Key!: Floating on a raft on Mirror Lake staring up at Half Dome, or tubing down the mighty Merced River.....wonderful memories.
  7:57pm
Listener John from NJ who lives in NJ:

@Philo Gristle: I may be wrong about the happiness quotient, but I know that in the last few years Lithuania has had the highest suicide rate in Europe. I don't know why. . .
  7:57pm
Caryn:

@LJ: no, they didn't occupy. According to the terms of the peace treaty, they got some of our eastern, Karelian territories, which many people are still seriously pissed about. There are occasional demands to "get Karelia back". After the war was over, we also had to chase the German troops out of Finland. They razed a lot of Lapland to the ground while retreating to Norway.
We're pretty pleased with things here. Sure, there are improvements to be made, and plenty of suicides (the darkness, grimness and drinking all add to that), but also lots of positive sides, like the good and free school system, welfare state, 100 % literacy, one of the world's lowest infant mortality rates etc.
  7:57pm
JayBe:

Is it all business up front?
  7:59pm
kat330:

Jay, give my love to Yosemite!!!!!
  7:59pm
Caryn:

We have been voted the happiest and best country to live in several times in recent years. Those numbers are based on both statistics and surveys asking citizens how satisfied they are with their lives. It is an interesting contrast with the suicide rates. We're a country of extremes, apparently.

Reality Check:

Ken's gonna be frozen in the tank next to Walt Disney, and will return to save FMU in its hour of greatest need, like King Arthur or the Hidden Imam...

kat330:

@Reality Check: Hey, Burl told you NOT to eat the brown acid!
