@LJ: yeah, they didn't actually meet, but interestingly, a restaurant here used to advertise itself as the one place where they met. In reality, just Lenin and Stalin hung out there. Still, whether we refer to the "stories for tourists" or the real history, I think some people would draw negative conclusions about the area.

Do you know if the Soviets actually occupied Finland during or after WWII? I know that Finland & the USSR went to war in 1940.
Caryn, I always read in the newspaper that people in Finland score high on international happiness surveys, and that the schools are the best in the world. Sounds good to me!
@kat330 -- When I was in elementary school in the late 1960s/early 1970s, we had to learn to spell the names of all kinds of countries that no longer existed (e.g., Bechuanaland, Sidi Ifni) because the spelling textbooks were really, really, really outdated.

We're pretty pleased with things here. Sure, there are improvements to be made, and plenty of suicides (the darkness, grimness and drinking all add to that), but also lots of positive sides, like the good and free school system, welfare state, 100 % literacy, one of the world's lowest infant mortality rates etc.
