@Hank: Yes, I did. There is one hour documentary on Peel's record collection, basically his favourite singles. Should be accessible on the net.

ever see the videos of them painting? they have a really delicate, steady hand...uh, trunk
  10:07am Hugo:

I started listening to Peel back in 1969, on what was then the medium wave. The Beeb only got on FM in the 70s.
  10:07am ndbob:

The Thai Elephant Orchestra collections are great
  10:08am Cecile:

yes, they are lovely artists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

The official station ID brought to you (literally) by the observant Amanda Nazario! Thank you for the texted reminder, Amanda!
  10:12am Hank:

Hugo; Top Gear, not to be confused with three conservative f***wits talking about cars. 1968 was my year of DISCovery.
  10:13am Amanda:

Extra-vigilant since the last time I was on the air and forgot one. :-) This is a beautiful track by Farid El-Atrache
  10:13am Cecile:

I like those f**wits. They are about 1,000,000 times better than the American version of that show. It's so terrible. It's like they are reading a script from Maxim magazine.
  10:14am Cecile:

and I have to admit I have kind of a thing for Richard Hamster, I mean Hammond.
  10:14am Hank:

Does not say much about either Cecile. Discussing cars we will never either want or afford.
  10:15am Van in DC:

Well forgetting the station ID is certainly worlds preferable to forgetting you are not just on stream, and dropping an F-bomb :)
  10:16am Cecile:

It is fun seeing things go smash, Hank. And they are very funny. I don't drive and can barely remember the make of the car my husband drives me in. I enjoy the humor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

@Hank
I spent 10 years editing magazines about remodeling kitchens and bathrooms that cost more than my apartment.
  10:17am Cecile:

I don't shoot guns or lip-synch to Gloria Gaynor songs in a mile-high wig, and I still enjoy both Top Gun and Drag Race. Interested people interest me.
  10:19am Parq:

Office puter is fired up. Let the party continue. Nazz, I walk, by the way.
  10:20am Hugo:

@Hank: Top Gear it was. It's fun downloading shows from those days from folks who recorded onto reel to reel tape recorders. I have bundles of reels but, alas, no a functioning tape recorder anymore. Will have to look into the second hand market.
  10:20am Mike East:

Anybody else find it off putting when they hear a curse on the stream? I'm so used to the censor that sometimes I forget I'm listening to a non air show and its very jarring. Does that make me a radio purist?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Doug Schulkind:

As long as you remember your husband's name, Cecile, you'll be OK.

The next song, Waen Wiset, is from Thailand. It is about a pair of X-ray glasses. See the cover here:

bit.ly...
  10:21am Cecile:

Fuck no, Mike.
*rimshot*
  10:21am Mike East:

That is the most amazing album cover, Doug.

  10:22am Hugo:

Will cursing in a foreign language be allowed, I wonder?
  10:23am listener james from westwood:

mike, i'm used to the curses in the songs, but when a stream-based dj curses, that's when i reflexively cringe; not from prudery but more like: "oh no! the station license!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Doug Schulkind:

As far as the American FCC overlords go, Hugo, cursing in non-English is OK, unless you are on a non-English station.
  10:23am listener james from westwood:

only if it's fidel castro cursing at a hugo chavez impersonator after being pranked on miami radio
  10:24am listener james from westwood:

that falls into the "pissing off dictators" safe harbor :)
  10:24am Parq:

{stream DJ}: curse word
Me: What --? Oh, wait, yeah.
  10:25am Van in DC:

Loving this set Doug!
  10:26am dc pat:

man, I gotta get some of those fucking glasses...
  10:26am Cecile:

Parq, just wow.
  10:26am Hank:

Hugo, did tape a few but lost in space now.
Educate, inform, entertain is still the BBCs brief from Lord Reith's days. Now it is give the public what they want, guess that's why I listen rather than watch.
End of unintentioned rant.
  10:27am Matt from Springfield:

Hello Again Doug (Of Course)!
Always glad to see/hear ya on the Mothership!
  10:27am Parq:

Good morning everybody! I'm loving this Thai pop.
  10:30am pierre:

Bonjour Doug !
Glad to tune in live for once !
  10:30am Cecile:

You know, Hank I understand.
I've watched three good US cable channels dedicated to the arts go right down the tubes:
Arts and Entertainment, Bravo and Ovation. OVation is now crappy movies and middlebrow reruns, A&E is reality TV (although they produce some great documentary series) and Bravo is just brawling and squalling reality. Depressing.
  10:34am Hank:

Did you notice that she wears a bikini for the digital version. Analogue is truly grubby!!!
  10:35am Van in DC:

Oh! And there they are...the Thai Elephant Orchestra :)
  10:35am Cecile:

  10:39am Parq:

I can't stop gazing at that photo, by the way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

It hasn't stopped gazing at you, friend.
  10:41am Matt from Springfield:

I was listening earlier when you played from the Tamburitza! album (yes, I always hear the exclamation point with you). I left a long posting on Joe McGasko's comments about Slovenians and other Yugoslavs from PA playing tamburitza music, and how I have numerous LPs of American bands from the 60s and 70s. I liked that John Halik but I admit that sounded very different from the "typical" tamburitza music I've heard. Like...Slavic bluegrass maybe.
  10:42am Matt from Springfield:

@Parq: Gaze lovingly at Doug's other clown photos on his past several playlists.
  10:43am pierre:

if Doug's sets had to taste like something, it'll taste like cinnamon cookies to me.
  10:44am annie:

i really am still here, just pretty busy..
  10:44am Hugo:

Probably the best cultural tv station in Europe:
http://www.arte.tv/de
We don't get that one here in the Nordics. Bugs me immensely.
  10:45am KevinfromBayRidge:

The world is good today! Not only did I get to listen to GTDS driving in BUT I can now listen on my sole unblocked stream (windows). Thank You Senor Drummersome!!!
  10:45am Leigh:

Howdy Doug!
  10:46am Matt from Springfield:

@pierre: The sweet, and exotic nature of GTDS as a whole makes me think of a mango and mangosteen smoothie (which I had in Thailand fresh! Mangosteen is a wonderful fruit!)
  10:47am Hugo:

Just to follow up the last post (with an eye on the playlist): Where else would you get an hour plus of Wadada Leo Smith and Louis Moholo-Moholo in duet? On TV? Just asking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

Hi Leigh! I'm so happy to read you!

@Pierre
I recommend that you actually taste one my playlists. A hint of cardamum and fresh ginger, no?
  10:48am Leigh:

:]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

@Matt
Isn't Mangosteen a fresh fruit from the Jersey Shore?
  10:48am Mike East:

I've spoken to Wadada Leo Smith on the phone...he books his own studio time.
  10:48am alan:

its nice to listen to your show from Mexico City instead of Sunset Park in Brooklyn. Ok....so, they are both Mexican neighborhoods. But here you can get a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice on the street for 60¢ for 12 oz. and ride the subway for 25¢ per ride. LOL
  10:49am pierre:

@Hugo : it is, seriously, the best. Arte+7 on the web to rewatch it.
i've just watch a documentary called "the geek revenge", very well done. And when the associate with the BBC for production, you can be sure that you're going to have a great doc.
@Doug / @Matt : definitively something with spices !
  10:49am Hank:

Hugo; the saddest loss for me in recent years was Radio Multikulti out of Berlin.
  10:50am Matt from Springfield:

In the earlier comments I see kat330 has reported the Richard and Linda Thompson connection with the title "Did She Fall or Was She Pushed?" I haven't heard that one, but I read how it was a subtle memorial to their former bandmate Sandy Denny (who died after falling down her stairs while under the influence). As in, did she fall (from her own addiction), or was she pushed (or did the pressures of fame lead her to it?)
  10:50am northguineahills:

Doug, your stream sounds clearer and has more volume then the WFMU stream. (been going back and forth to compare).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

@KevinfromBayRidge
That's brilliant! Congrats.

Buenos días, Alan.
  10:51am allan:

good sounds, really nice friday stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

@NGH
That is because WFMU is running my stream into its stream, so it is getting double compressed.
  10:53am Hank:

ngh no question Doug wins hands down or up. Dare I ask 'bout employment?
  10:53am Matt from Springfield:

With all the cultural/fine arts media going under or being switched to a lowbrow format, a completely listener supported deal like WFMU seems to be the best safeguard. That could be the next new stream! "WFMU Highbrow"!
  10:53am Van in DC:

I really need to get up to do something. But that would mean pulling off my headphones. And I just can't do that right now. :)
  10:53am annie:

i miss wqxr, didn't they used to say: "the radio station of the new york times"?.. omg all those years ago, and in the paper they had the full day's line-up of programming, and while we're at it i miss the flup
  10:54am Hank:

Matt back to monobrow.
  10:54am Matt from Springfield:

@Van: Surely not in the MIDDLE of "Drop Op"! Wait till it fades out, and run before you get hooked onto the next track :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Doug Schulkind:

Hey kat330. I missed your comment earlier. So much to read flying by as I manage this pile of records. Good morning!
  10:55am northguineahills:

@Hank: I have a second interview next week. The whole process seems to take forever. Then again, my last job took 5 interviews and 4 months before I started.
  10:56am northguineahills:

Thanks!
  10:56am Leigh:

I'm feeling really excited about listening to more Polly Pry
  10:56am Hank:

Is there a medical?
  10:56am Matt from Springfield:

@Hank: "Uni-brow"? :)
  10:57am Van in DC:

Best wishes ngh!
  11:01am Hank:

Doug, Is there some relation to Mount Kailas? Sacred and unclimbed.
  11:01am Alex in Illinois:

If I recall correctly, the story is that Zamzam or Zemzem or Zhemzhem sprang up from the ground from Hagar's tears.
  11:05am Hank:

Amanda, has the mobile concept already featured in your brainspace?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

Sounds right to me, Alex. I only briefly scanned Wikipedia. I will correct your typo—no extra charge!
  11:07am Carmichael:

Good morning Douglas and others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Doug Schulkind:

You are SO RIGHT, Hank. Amanda came up with the idea of a portable radio show many years ago. I got dreamy about Amanda after hearing a story on WNYC about her Kickstarter campaign for it. Well it turns out, Amanda is doing very moving radio—every Wednesday, 12-3: wfmu.org...
  11:12am Parq:

The Zulu Jive singer sounds a lot like the just-departed Skip Pitt.
  11:12am hamburger:

almost sounded like an African Bob Dylan :B
  11:12am Hugo:

Re. cultural radio: WFMU to the rescue! We have an annual folk/world music festival in Førde which is north of here. Last year Rob Weisberg came over to cover the festival. The results can be seen and heard here:

http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/41123
  11:14am Amanda:

That is nice of you to remember, Hank! One of these days I'll really do it (the Kickstarter campaign didn't raise enough money).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning to you, Carmichael and hello hamburger.

I learned of Skip's passing via your FB post, Parq.
  11:16am northguineahills:

I doubt there's a medial, it's a start up. The last time I had to take a medical/drug test was back in 2000, and I had no problem passing. Be much easier now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

Amanda, you have my blessing to take Give the Drummer Radio to the masses. Maybe I should call you Ambassador Nazario.
  11:17am Matt from Springfield:

Rob has broadcast numerous world music shows on his program, local to NYC and apparently not-local-whatsoever shows as well! Thanks Hugo!
  11:17am Matt from Springfield:

@Amanda: What is your idea for mobile radio? Like broadcasting around from different locations live?
  11:19am Amanda:

Embarrassed to discuss this on playlist! Basically yes, Matt. All around the U.S. or just different places around the city, depending on bravery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

If the song title of the next track offends, please avert your eyes. (But keep your ears agape.)
  11:21am still b/p:

Hello. Getting only 1/3 of a show here, maybe, and will consequently be slouchy, limpy and surly the rest of the workday.
This African set prompts me to tell that I saw "Fela" the musical last weekend in Boston. Not crazy about all of it as a theater piece, but, man, the lead actor and the dancers and the band TORE...IT....UP!
  11:21am Matt from Springfield:

"Embarassed? Don't be! It's all part of growing up, and being British" :)

Nevertheless, that sounds like a cool idea, here's to someday doing that, maybe even a nation-wide Nazario Scenario! (clinks Aquafina bottle)
  11:23am Amanda:

Dancing in the nude, offensive? Fawk yoo mon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

@still b/p
I have a big question to ask about the musical "Fela" (which I've never seen). Did the story address Fela's feelings regarding AIDS or even the fact that he died of AIDS? I've wondered this forever and never had this resolved.
  11:24am Hank:

'The naughty naked nude'
  11:24am FCC:

Mr. Schulkind, Ms. Nazario, I hope there's a "black bar" over the broadcast airwaves, so the radio listeners can't hear the nudity!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

Madam Ambassador!
  11:26am Amanda:

*ahem* As you were.
  11:26am Matt from Springfield:

Amanda does make a good ambassador. She not only has a nice, diplomatic voice, but today she's bringing classes to the masses on their asses!
Oops, is the FCC still listening...?
  11:29am still b/p:

Doug: No.
Focused on early music and consciousness development, then on dissident enduring brutal crackdowns and harassment, and does underline his inclination toward partying, pot-centricity and "pussy" (his term in script), but ends on a note of character and defiance, not disease/demise.
  11:30am Snortley:

No "s" sound. It means up to date, in fashion, plugged in.
  11:30am ?:

"dans" = "dawn" (more or less). No "s."
  11:34am ndbob:

great song.. wasn't this originally done by Barbara Lynn?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Doug Schulkind:

@still b/p
Then I am seriously upset will Bill T. Jones (whose lover and partner Arnie Zane, died of AIDS). Fela refused to acknowledge the AIDS existed and rallied Nigerian men to reject condom use. Fela's brother at the time was Nigeria's Minister of Health who tried his best to mitigate the damage done by his famous sibling. How on God's green earth could Bill T. Jones not address this squarely. (I realize it wouldn't sell a lot of tickets on Broadway, but fuck that!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Doug Schulkind:

@ndbob
You are correct, Sir!
  11:35am Van in DC:

Amanda maybe you should retry your Kickstarter now that you are world famous :)
  11:38am Cecile:

I don't know what Bill T. Jones's explanation would be, but I would think many people wouldn't attend the show if those issues were covered. I think in some circles, Fela, like Bob Marley, has ceased to be a person and has become an icon or symbol.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks to Snortley and ? for the pronunciation assistance.
  11:39am Matt from Springfield:

Did you play this on Good Friday, Doug?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Doug Schulkind:

PROGRAMMING ALERT...

Anyone wanting to continue the conversation after 12pm, I will be on the playlist for Steinski's show here:

@Cecile
I have been a devoted appreciator of Bill T. Jones (and Fela) for decades, but that explanation—which I would anticipate, too—is bullshit. (Not your explanation, of course, the one we are imagining he would make.)
  11:43am Cecile:

I'm sure it would be.

But would you feel better if he said, yeah, there was a whole scene dedicated to it and the backers made me cut it out?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Doug Schulkind:

I would accept whatever explanation he gave over Arnie's grave...
  11:45am Hank:

Even in death Fela is still stirring it up. Think I would rather go and see Carousel.
  11:45am Cecile:

Touche, Doug.
  11:46am Cecile:

hahhaha, Hank.
  11:49am Parq:

Doug, you can no longer stop commercialism on Broadway than you can stop the rain once it's pouring. The Fela musical, IMO, is mainly for mainstream music lovers (mostly white) who had never heard of Fela or listened to Afro-pop before this show. The band is competent, but no more.
  11:50am Hank:

Please Mr Drummer could we have Carabao's Tati on another day? Maybe your Far Eastern Pop Special Extravaganza.

Thanks for todays wonderment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

@Hank
You sure can. In the meantime, you can download that music here: bit.ly...
  11:55am Hank:

Thanks. It's more fun not to have control and let it be an ear fulfilling surprise. I know more work for DS.
  11:55am listener james from westwood:

always a wonder, on internet or on air. thanks, doug!
  11:55am northguineahills:

When Fela first opened in NYC, Antibalas was the house band. A friend went to go see it and said Antibalas sounded as good as ever. Now they have different house bands.
  11:56am Van in DC:

Thanks for the show Doug & Amanda! Wonderful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Doug Schulkind:

Steinski party over here:

wfmu.org...
  11:58am still b/p:

As usual, I think the makers want to frame just a few things simply and then deliver those things with hammer blows. Framenhammer Productions. They'll put some humanizing elements in, doubts and missteps, but push push push the heroic, the comic, the poignant, the rafter-and-booty-shaking energy.
Funny to see the scripted efforts to get the very mixed audience fired up and standing up, concert style. The repetitive shtick of being scolding and I'm-gonna-walk-off disappointed at the response was old by the fourth...fifth time.
  11:58am Matt from Springfield:

Thanks again Doug! Thanks board op Amanda!
You gave the Drummer Some across many frequencies and streams today!
  11:59am Amanda:

I see Bryce walking in the front door now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Doug Schulkind:

Amanda,
I will need to cut out ASAP after noon to start Steinski. Let me know when I am offa the WFMU airwaves. Thanks!!
  11:59am ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Doug Schulkind:

Give Bryce a big embarrassing bear hug from me!

Yep, will do.

This was fun! I got shit done at work, but this was fun. Bye, Drumsum, Nazz, give Bryce a hug for the rest of us too.
  12:01pm JAY / LONDON:

thanks for the music :0

You are off the air, chum. Great show!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm Doug Schulkind:

Great to hear you Doug, loved the show!
  12:04pm bryce:

big jaws of life doug hug
  12:04pm still b/p:

Off air! Burst - of - swears! Burst - of - swears!
  1:39pm Van in DC:

OOOOOOH. I was wondering why Amanda's "fawk" comment looked familiar.

Probably much like someone else here thought my own "all hail the wail" comment looked somewhat familiar.
  2:28pm Emily:

@ Leigh, Polly Pry is now available on band camp!
