I've watched three good US cable channels dedicated to the arts go right down the tubes: Arts and Entertainment, Bravo and Ovation. OVation is now crappy movies and middlebrow reruns, A&E is reality TV (although they produce some great documentary series) and Bravo is just brawling and squalling reality. Depressing.

This African set prompts me to tell that I saw "Fela" the musical last weekend in Boston. Not crazy about all of it as a theater piece, but, man, the lead actor and the dancers and the band TORE...IT....UP!

Nevertheless, that sounds like a cool idea, here's to someday doing that, maybe even a nation-wide Nazario Scenario! (clinks Aquafina bottle)

I have a big question to ask about the musical "Fela" (which I've never seen). Did the story address Fela's feelings regarding AIDS or even the fact that he died of AIDS? I've wondered this forever and never had this resolved.

Focused on early music and consciousness development, then on dissident enduring brutal crackdowns and harassment, and does underline his inclination toward partying, pot-centricity and "pussy" (his term in script), but ends on a note of character and defiance, not disease/demise.

Then I am seriously upset will Bill T. Jones (whose lover and partner Arnie Zane, died of AIDS). Fela refused to acknowledge the AIDS existed and rallied Nigerian men to reject condom use. Fela's brother at the time was Nigeria's Minister of Health who tried his best to mitigate the damage done by his famous sibling. How on God's green earth could Bill T. Jones not address this squarely. (I realize it wouldn't sell a lot of tickets on Broadway, but fuck that!)

Anyone wanting to continue the conversation after 12pm, I will be on the playlist for Steinski's show here: wfmu.org... You can listen to Give the Drummer Radio via this link: wfmu.org... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ @Cecile I have been a devoted appreciator of Bill T. Jones (and Fela) for decades, but that explanation—which I would anticipate, too—is bullshit. (Not your explanation, of course, the one we are imagining he would make.)

Funny to see the scripted efforts to get the very mixed audience fired up and standing up, concert style. The repetitive shtick of being scolding and I'm-gonna-walk-off disappointed at the response was old by the fourth...fifth time.
