Slim Gaillard, love his stuff!
I was trying to remember who recorded "Bang Bang" -- Joe Cuba. That was actually a charting hit at the time, a landmark mainstream success of Latin music in the US.

12:38pm
Van in DC:

12:38pm

12:39pm
listener james from westwood:
back in junior high, saucer stuff like this riveted me. used to be a show on nyc am radio, wnbc 660 i think, maybe sunday night (not long john nebel or art bell; way before bell) that featured ufo research and interviews. kinda stuff that omni magazine ran when it was still good. i ate it all up.
My moms is a lung cancer survivor. She quit smoking when I was 10. I told her I would give up sucking my thumb if she gave up cigs. I learned much later that she cheated on me.
I've been sucking ever since, suckah!
12:44pm
JAY / LONDON:
I am with you there hank .. will soon be heading out to kings cross for a cold beer and a short well in a half a hour or more i goes .. oh just loving this show
12:44pm
Hank:
Steinski is right about the production team on Cibo Matto, worked on Latin Playboys.
van, you bought yourself a huge break by stopping though, and it's damnably tough. plus your heart and cardiovascular system benefitted almost immediately from stoppage. (the smoking stoppage, not heart stoppage!!)
Hank, I ADORE the Latin Playboys. Way more than Los Lobos. Especially their first record.
12:46pm
Van in DC:
high blood pressure (slightly). Everything else is okay far as I know. It was tough to stop. But cold turkey, not a puff one since.
12:47pm
Hank:
Well done, you will not regret it.
12:47pm
Matt from Springfield:
Kudos to all the nicotine quitters!
Man, the weather around DC has been really erratic lately. Nice this morning, then a sudden thundershower and now moist and overcast! It's been raining very unpredictably the past week.
12:48pm
Van in DC:
2.5 packs a day average (50 cigs a day) when I quit. 27 yrs of smoking. About a month ago I figured something ridiculous, like 27,000 cigs I have not smoked since stopping! Boggle.
Just received word that Adam Yauch has died of cancer. He was forty fucking seven.
12:49pm
northguineahills:
effin' A, Van!
12:49pm
listener james from westwood:
thanks doug. been a helluva week.
van, there's actually a medical unit of measure called a pack-year for calculating/standardizing tobacco use. scary that such a unit is needed. i can only imagine you've found a good use for the money quitting freed up! (records, wfmu donations, etc.)
12:50pm
still b/p:
Go, quitters. Outstanding. Big credit for something hugely and infernally hard.
I always fear for the kids of the smokers I know. I'd hope that one's own children -- without them having to say anything -- would a more powerful motivator than almost anything else. The prospective early loss of shared life and the terrifically bad experience...but you cain't say such things to folks.
12:50pm
tr;sh:
@Hank Full on semi-
@Van Thanks! 19 months is amazing.
@all worth celebrating never having to quit that insidiously addictive chem (again) whenever possible
12:51pm
Van in DC:
@ljfw - yep! That's the $$$ I've been using for various FMU supports & Kickstarters :)
12:53pm
listener james from westwood:
doug, that is fucking awful. hope beyond hope it's a bad net rumor.
b/p, both my parents smoked. it was a powerful disincentive. otoh, when a resident in my apt complex died, a longtime smoker from the look of the apt (it was clear in the unit where pictures had been, from the stained walls). when his son was making visits to empty out the unit, he took frequent cig breaks. got ingrained early i guess.
Thanks for bringing another show into the Digital Realm!
Have a great weekend everyone!
