	11:47am tony: Coincidentally, this song is about a car and that Limit song sounded like the Cars.
	11:47am G: In American dialectology, there are three main regions -- northern, midland, and southern, running in bands from east to west, reflecting how people migrated and settled from east to west. Northern Ohio is northern (shading into midwestern, which is a version of northern) pronunciation, and southern Ohio and certainly anywhere south of Cincy and thr Ohio River shades into Midland. Commong example: Northern pronunciation is "greasy" (with an s sound), Midland and Southern is traditionally "greazy" -- etc. etc.

	11:50am G: My only KY connection is a Pulaski County family reunion with one-time in-laws a few times, but that's most of the way down to Tennessee...

	11:51am BSI: ....and then there's the MD eastern shore, which has a direct link to the third moon of Jupiter, I think.
	11:53am BenG: When it comes to the blues, it runs North- South roughly up the Mississippi River, From Zydeco and New Orleans to St. Louis to Chicago
	11:53am kat330: Well, I thought it was a nice KY --> NJ connection with Rosie in the Oaks, but maybe the Jersey folks couldn't care less. :)
	11:54am G: The Chesapeake and the VA rivers that empty into it are really the original core of southern language and culture. That was the first place settled in the southern part of the country. If you think the eastern shore of MD/VA pronunciation sounds distinctive, check out some of the islands in the bay (Tilghman, etc.) that were more isolated until quite recently and retain older features

	11:59am G: @Ben: Because the north developed economically and had urbanization and the south didn't (till after 1950), in the early and mid 1900s both whites and blacks went north to work in factories etc. (better than subsistence agriculture) -- and their culture went along, of course. When I lived in southern Michigan, there were many people from KY and TN whose parents had come north for auto work or general economic opportunity. That's how Chicago became a distant offshoot of Delta culture. :-) In the 1800s, settlement went east-west from the Atlantic. In the first half of the 20th, it went south to north. In more recent decades, it's shifted to north-south, as southern cities have caught up on all their lost time by growing much more rapidly than older northern ones.

	11:47am G: In American dialectology, there are three main regions -- northern, midland, and southern, running in bands from east to west, reflecting how people migrated and settled from east to west. Northern Ohio is northern (shading into midwestern, which is a version of northern) pronunciation, and southern Ohio and certainly anywhere south of Cincy and thr Ohio River shades into Midland. Commong example: Northern pronunciation is "greasy" (with an s sound), Midland and Southern is traditionally "greazy" -- etc. etc.

	11:54am G: The Chesapeake and the VA rivers that empty into it are really the original core of southern language and culture. That was the first place settled in the southern part of the country. If you think the eastern shore of MD/VA pronunciation sounds distinctive, check out some of the islands in the bay (Tilghman, etc.) that were more isolated until quite recently and retain older features

	11:59am G: @Ben: Because the north developed economically and had urbanization and the south didn't (till after 1950), in the early and mid 1900s both whites and blacks went north to work in factories etc. (better than subsistence agriculture) -- and their culture went along, of course. When I lived in southern Michigan, there were many people from KY and TN whose parents had come north for auto work or general economic opportunity. That's how Chicago became a distant offshoot of Delta culture. :-) In the 1800s, settlement went east-west from the Atlantic. In the first half of the 20th, it went south to north. In more recent decades, it's shifted to north-south, as southern cities have caught up on all their lost time by growing much more rapidly than older northern ones.
