Listener comments!

  5:45pm Matt from Springfield:

Hey Doug!
Is this the rumored, talked about, all bed music show?
  5:49pm listener james from westwood:

this show is going to the mattresses!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm Doug Schulkind:

Pajama party!
  5:57pm ndbob:

evening Doug, James, Matt!
  5:58pm listener james from westwood:

howdy ndbob, doug, and matt!
  6:00pm Matt from Springfield:

Hey NDbob, LJfW, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Ndbob! LJFW! Matt in Springfield! The Manny, Moe and Jack of listenerville.
  6:01pm Matt from Springfield:

Adding "pep" to any comment board!
  6:03pm northguineahills:

Jeepers, I hope she's ok.

I'll be busy shaving off my 3 month beard.
  6:04pm listener james from westwood:

holy crap!! hope all's okay with her and that driver got a ticket and then some!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Nope, NGH, I don't think it was a jeep! Jessie said the driver was looking down, probably tuning in her radio, when she hit the gas. If it WAS the radio, then you could hardly blame her.
  6:05pm ndbob:

ah I know this one:)
  6:05pm Matt from Springfield:

Good Lord, hope nothing's serious with her leg.
At least it's not a tragedy to spring on your daughter right before she's set to perform, so that's good. Still, a busy manic time for sure. Stay strong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Doug Schulkind:

@LJFW, cops were on the scene. The good news: The BIKE is OK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Doug Schulkind:

My daughter refused to play in the concert at first. She wants to go see Mama. Problem is, I'm not ever sure which hospital. The thing about Pittsburgh is, there's a freakin hospital on every other block.
  6:08pm ndbob:

wow Doug.... poor Jesse
  6:08pm Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: Anyways, an important lesson here: WFMU is a *public safety* issue--why can't I get it everywhere, so I don't have to change anything! Well there are five+ streams, but I can change 6 presets from my steering wheel without looking down! Satellite feeds of FMU, the future!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Doug Schulkind:

I'm telling you, Matt, once WFMU has implanted all of its transponders in listeners craniums, this won't be a problem. You just twitch your nose, Bewitched style, to change streams.
  6:10pm Matt from Springfield:

Recognize this Soul Sitar! This is a good one.

(What was the sitar piece playing on the stream right before you faded in the theme? I've heard various different arrangements of that one, very familiar.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Doug Schulkind:

Matt, that was Indian Vibes's version of Dave Pike Set's "Mathar."
  6:12pm listener james from westwood:

good hospital coverage and cops able to address a cyclist/car accident? pittsburgh's got it going on.
  6:13pm listener james from westwood:

and no small bit of good news that the bike's ok. that would be insult to injury.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Doug Schulkind:

Leave it to me to screw up the "real" music bed on this show... Sorry for the false alarm.
  6:13pm Matt from Springfield:

That's it, we could play FMU over the existing Facebook mind-control infrastructure, it would be easier to implement. And the "twitching" sound fx can be played when you tune in.

Is there a chance for Lincoln to talk with her Mama on the phone first, might ease her nerves.
  6:15pm OvO:

sup dug + frenz. love this track
  6:16pm Matt from Springfield:

"Mathar"! Thanks Doug. One of the first thousand mp3s I ever got was a prob. mis-labeled "Ravi Shankar" track of a techno version of "Mathar", good arrangement, I still like it.

@LJfW: Pittsburgh might not have the "thrills" of NYC, but at least they can get down to business when it really matters, that's good to know.
  6:17pm Matt from Springfield:

Ugh! Consisti-twerps! Who needs 'em!
  6:18pm Holly in NC:

Hi Doug & everyone! And happy world goth day, to Matt if no one else ;-)

@Doug: Ziad Rahbani?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Doug Schulkind:

HellOvO!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey Holly! I played Ziad Rahbani on last September's music bed show. God forbid anyone would hear me repeat myself (cough, cough).
  6:21pm G:

"And so to bed." is how Samuel Pepys ends many of his diary entries. The first modern English-language diary to be published and famous, it was written in London in the 1660s but not decoded and published till the 1800s. (A lot of the especially personal and imtimate stuff was written in code.)
  6:21pm Matt from Springfield:

Happy WGD, Holly! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Doug Schulkind:

Way to raise the class around here, G!
  6:25pm listener james from westwood:

shout-out to the pepys!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Dontcha hate it when your wife calls and says "Listen, honey, I'm OK..." from the back of an ambulance?
  6:26pm Holly in NC:

Hi Matt! I've been going wild on the twitter. I don't often get a chance to celebrate my youthful gothness. Actually got a mention from Ego Trip, which is....

wait, what? Is Jessie OK?
  6:27pm G:

As long as I'm classing things up, should I also mention the symbols he used to keep track of when he pleasured himself, the foreign languages he used for passages about prostitutes and mistresses, and the time his wife caught him dead to rights with his "main" in the "cunny" of her young personal assistant? :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Doug Schulkind:

Hit by a car on her bike. Leg took the impact. No brain damage (that anyone can tell).
  6:28pm Holly in NC:

Do you need to go? Go!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Doug Schulkind:

Samuel Pepys is, apparently, the man (or, "the main man")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Doug Schulkind:

Thanks Holly, no. I have to head off to Lincoln's school for her "spring concert." Nothing comes before the viola.
  6:30pm Matt from Springfield:

@G: I've read several excerpts of Pepys adventures, he may not be the first to have done them but he was the first since probably Martial to write about them so colorfully!
  6:31pm ndbob:

for sure Doug.. I remember when I was law school I got a call from a classmate of my ex's saying "Don't worry, but Alice is being taken out of the classroom on a stretcher"
  6:32pm listener james from westwood:

my mom got a call like that from one of the chaperones for a high school class trip to washington dc. "everyone's fine, but your son and 3 of his friends were mugged." [mom shits brick]
  6:33pm Matt from Springfield:

Funkity! Another great one.
Any of your Western/cowboy bed music planned for this show? You have some great instrumentals I've heard.
  6:34pm northguineahills:

Ok, back, I think I heard most of everything from the wash room. Hopefully by the time the recital is over, she'll be released from the hospital.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Doug Schulkind:

I could've play the East Texas Serenaders, but I'm moving into different neighborhoods.
  6:35pm Matt from Springfield:

My Mom's a huge worrier, I know better now than to call her in the middle of a problem, before it at least starts to be resolved.

"Mom, this *happened*. But, we're all fine now and..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Doug Schulkind:

DRUMMER STREAM PROGRAMMING ALERT...
Coming up at 7pm, Jesse Kaminsky will be live on the stream with Kaminsky Kamoutsky. His playlist is here:

bit.ly...
  6:36pm Matt from Springfield:

East Texas Serenaders--love those guys, but if not now, just keep them in mind for a future bed music episode. Save a GPS point in that "neighborhood" as it were.
  6:37pm G:

There are English-language diarists before Pepys, in the earlier 1600s, Matt -- John Evelyn, for example. There are even diarists in Massachusetts from 1620 on. But Pepys is the frankest diarist before the 1800s, and therefore the best known from the 1800s on. Martial (he's Spanish/Iberian, but composed in Latin) wrote epigrammatic poetry that had a lot of frank personal content, back in Roman times.
  6:39pm Holly in NC:

No one's every called me until someone's actually dead. Mom, Dad, Grandmom, cat... For real. Between that and an unfortunate period where bill collectors had reason to ring me, I'm totally phone phobic. Ask anyone who knows me - I just don't answer.
  6:41pm northguineahills:

I share the same phobias for the same reasons, Holly in NC. Unless I'm expecting a phone call, I rarely answer, especially if it's not a familiar number.
  6:45pm listener james from westwood:

calls outside certain times are uniformly bad news in my home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Doug Schulkind:

Plus, there's all them germs on the receiver. After years of trying to find the source for many hospital-borne infections, tests showed that doctor's cellphones were the most infected things on the planet. They drop their perfectly sanitized hands into their white pockets and pull out their damned phones.

(1) Never answer phone.
(2) Never go to hospital (except today, of course).
  6:48pm Matt from Springfield:

I haven't received bad news via answering machine, they say to call them when I get it, but there's usually something in the tone that you just know is going to be bad news when you call back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Doug Schulkind:

Now that I listen to this Marco di Marco w/out me yammering over it, it sounds very Bob James-ish. Is this a good thing? Why the hell not.
  6:50pm OvO:

lovin this marco joint, mang. thx fer thee illuminating edification. back to work
  6:50pm Matt from Springfield:

Smooth piece here from the Marco di Marco Trio. Nice and atmospheric.
  6:53pm OvO:

made fr a smoothe segway into this reverberian revelry too. sick chit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Doug Schulkind:

And now, for the badest ass of the bad-ass music bed tracks, Mr. Oliver Sain. (Possibly the man who introduced Lester Bowie to Fontella Bass!)
  6:55pm ndbob:

really nice one here
  6:56pm Matt from Springfield:

King Kong ain't got nothin' on Oliver Sain!
  6:57pm Holly in NC:

LOVE this Oliver Sain
  6:58pm Matt from Springfield:

Thanks for a fun hour, "Behind The Bed Music"!

Best of luck to the wife, hope she's feeling better soon.
  6:59pm northguineahills:

Good set. Best of luck w/ all endeavors tonight!
  6:59pm listener james from westwood:

indeed; all good health and recovery be hers. thanks for the bed extravaganza, doug!
  6:59pm Holly in NC:

Best to Jessie, Lincoln, and of course you, Doug. Virtual hugs!
  7:00pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug1
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Thanks all. Hugs!
  7:01pm ndbob:

good luck Doug!
  10:07am Van in DC:

Ha! Nice pic. All it needs is a clown. Oh....that would be me!
  10:08am Van in DC:

Oh my, Doug...hope Jessie is okay! :(
  10:10am Doug Schulkind:

Hi Van,
They're keeping her in the hospital for observation, thought I should be able to get her later this afternoon. Maybe I should go dressed as a clown. (Although who could tell?!)
  10:36am Van in DC:

So Lincoln plays viola? Does she know this joke:

How do you keep someone from stealing your violin? Hide it in a viola case. :)
  10:46am Van in DC:

You gotta check out Google today - ha! :)

That 2nd set was *fantastic*
  10:51am Doug Schulkind:

Moogtastic.
  11:01am Van in DC:

Wow. I think I'm hearing the Oliver Sain track now, not sure (53-54 minutes in). Whatever it is, it's lovely. Great set, great show, many thanks Drummer! :)
  11:04am Doug Schulkind:

Oliver Sain is the slow, bittersweet sax piece at program's end.
  11:05am Van in DC:

Yep, that is what it was. Gonna have to track that one down!
  11:07am Brian in UK:

Great show, marred by MTA with Jessie. Hope she is home safe and sound.
You know I can be picky. Olinga? I used to have that beauty now it costs a mint.
  11:35am Brian in UK:

There was only one bed music to play on this programme whilst the DJ speaks ofcourse as you so rightly said.
