Saw Goldeneye the other day, remember thinking how dumb the computers looked in there too
  7:10am

Evidently his color vision is a bit different, Caryn. hehe...
  7:11am
Chuck:

Also a Tom Hanks (playing Jim Lovell) line in "Apollo 13". "One day we'll have a computer that fits in a single room!" Jeez....
  7:11am
Caryn:

Also, Toyah sang about a computer on an album referencing sheep farming? Unless the sheep are on Farmville, I don't think those 2 have much in common.

@Chuck: I blame the coloured sunglasses he wore.
  7:15am
Caryn:

Yeah, but at least the "Apollo 13" line is supposed to be funny and is said in retrospect. "War Games" and "Goldeneye" were supposed to be high-tech. I love "War Games" but it does make me laugh now, especially as a lot of the other characters in the movie are in awe of Broderick's impressive computer arsenal. It's like Ally Sheedy looks around his room going "So what are these... com-pu-ters?"
  7:16am
Dave B:

8 Inch Floppy. Good band name.
  7:17am

The modem was classic too, Caryn! You actually had to put the phone reciever on it! hehe....

Dave B:

hehe...
  7:23am
Caryn:

@Chuck: exactly! And when Broderick was uncertain about what to do, he'd take his giant roll of paper from his printer to his nerd buddies to look over... Not to mention that the "top-of-the-line computer game" he's thrilled with hacking into (aka the Norad computer simulation) looks like one of the most basic text-based games I ever played on my dad's PC as a kid.
  7:24am
Elwyn:

Crud! Nodded off. So nice and warm in bed!

Ah, computer blues! Need a song about being sick of working with computers
  7:26am
Chuck:

I know, Caryn! In a way I sort of miss the simple text interface. Primitive by todays standards as it may be...
  7:29am
Dave B:

Commodore 64 was my first computer around 1982. Circa 1985 I worked for a company delivering/installing WANG VS systems.
  7:30am
Caryn:

Yeah, Chuck! I miss the old games too. Modern action, RPG and shoot-em-up games are just inexplicable to me. I suck at them. But give me an old Atari or C64 game, and I kick ass!
  7:31am
Dave B:

Speaking of kicking ass....

I had a Commodore 64. Had no clue what to do with it. I totally remember WANG! There was a Wang building near where I lived. Now my inner 12 year old is giggling..... wang..... hehe
  7:32am
Chuck:

The band Barcelona actually wrote a song about Commodore 64 computers, Dave! Don't know if Meghan is gonna play that one though...
  7:34am
Dave B:

WANG and the 8 Inch Floppies....
  7:34am
Caryn:

I still have some of my old computer game cassettes and floppies from the Atari and C64. The Atari was the whole family's, the C64 was mine. Dad had an IBM, big brother had an Amiga. I can remember going to his room to watch him play his fancy Amiga games (way fancier graphics and more colours than my C64 games), like Leisure Suit Larry...
  7:36am
Chuck:

I didn't get my first computer until '94 or so. Windows 3.1 OS! Every upgrade cost me over $400. For only 4 megs of memory!! And I had to install my own CD drive since it didn't come with one...
  7:37am
Chuck:

Oh, had to buy and install a sound card too! Didn't come with that either...
  7:37am
Dave B:

I was friends with this guy via my ex. But back in the C64 days the Rhythm Rocker and Kawasaki Synth were mainstays of my computer fun. That and Summer/Winter Olympics...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kawasaki_Synthesizer
  7:37am
Elwyn:

WANG sounds so dirty!
I had a C64, fake Apple IIe compatible.

Sheet! I know SY and NY are big fans of each other but never knew SY covered "Computer Age".
  7:38am
Dave B:

And just for shits and giggles, I have MS Virtual PC images of Windows 3.0 thru 2000 just for nostalgia sake.
  7:41am
Dave B:

We'll have a cooler of beverages too!
  7:41am
Chuck:

Dress like the characters from "Gilligan's Island", Meghan. hehe....
  7:41am
Caryn:

I can't remember what music programmes I had for my C64. There was one where you could make your own songs, and one that did nothing except play a computerised version of Madonna's "Material Girl". I still remember the Summer Olympics and how you had to torture your joystick or keyboard ridiculously when trying to "run".
  7:42am
pierre:

SSSOOOOOO JEALOUS ABOUT THAT MERMAID PARADE !
  7:42am
Andy in Berlin:

isn't 5 senses a bit big for a single theme? what about doing one for each sense? Would that be watering it down too much? Seems like you're burning a lot of material if you do it all at once.
  7:44am
Dave B:

@Chuck - I've ordered ascots and captains hats. Searching for blue blazers (a'la Judge Smails and Noonan christening the Flying Wasp)

@Caryn: Epyx had great games. I'm surprised I didn't break more joysticks with Summer Games and Winter Games. Did you play California Games too?
  7:56am

@Chuck: it's normally a car product. It's a liquid/gel with an abrasive in it for taking out scratches.

Morning, all. Miss Meg, looks like it's been a really neat show. This may be a job for Archive Man.
  7:59am
Chuck:

Ah, okay, Elwyn. It's just a sort of polish then. Sure, go ahead and use it if you want. It can't hurt anything and it'll make the final coat super smooth...
  8:00am
Caryn:

@Elwyn: can't remember. I can remember game images and music, but very few actual game names.

The great thing about old computers was that often the greatest upgrade you did was to get a new kind of joystick. I can still remember the Kempston Competition Pro joystick, which was the first one me and my brother used. And my total excitement, when I switched from that to a new joystick. Can't find an exact match online, but this is very similar: http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-images-stock-images-oldschool-joystick-image14707984

@Chuck: yep, and when playing Summer Olympics, I'd have to move the joystick from side to side so fast and hard to make the damn runnner run, my playing would be accompanied by the rapid sound of suction cups coming off the table.

  8:12am

@Caryn: On the C64, we mainly had standard joysticks but we did have one with an auto-fire button! That was such a cheat!
On the PC, my favourite joystick was a Microsoft product (even though we hated M$): The Sidewinder 3D. It was cool having a joystick like a fighter pilot and a little throttle slider!
  8:12am
Caryn:

Thanks for the link, Dave! Now I can say we had 2 Jr Joypads (that sounds kinda dirty...) for our Atari. And my new joystick was actually the Quickjoy Joypad QS-193. (man, these names...)

i actually need a new joystick for my current computer. My old Sidewinder has the old type of joystick connector and there's no port on the computer for it. Everything is USB these days...

I always wanted to do a Sigmund costume for the Mermaid. Maybe one year...

god, Sigmund would be WICKED hot!

Chuck:

Better hope it isn't a really hot day, Dave. You'd suffocate in something like that...

Andy in Berlin:

@Caryn - Apparently Rod Serling, when he was writing the original opening for the Twilight Zone. thought there were already 5 dimensions.

Caryn:

@Elwyn: later on, my brother got the SideWinder Precision Pro joystick for his computer. I was kinda jealous of it.
  8:22am
Dave B:

@Meghan - would these be appropriate?

Anyone have any suggestions for a new joystick? I like flight simulators mostly and force feedback would be a plus...

I saw that one too..... not bad.....

Caryn:

The "sexy Hulk Hogan" is hilarious! Although the Marvin the Martian and Elmo costumes have now crapped all over my childhood. If they were actual Marvin or Elmo costumes, fine. But they're essentially "I've skinned the character and am now wearing him as a dress". No!

Oh, for shame this Bad Religion song. Computer bad!
  8:29am
Caryn:

Dave, that's actually surprisingly tasty. Even some of the "related products" are okay.
  8:29am

@Caryn: do you think they've ate them ?

@Chuck: Sadly haven't played any PC games in ages. I miss quality flight sims. Anything flight is too arcade on consoles.
  8:32am
Caryn:

@Dave: yay, Patton! The voice of reason on so many issues...
  8:33am
Chuck:

Not this one, Elwyn! http://www.proflightsimulator.com/
I haven't gotten it yet, but plan to when I have a new joystick....

Dave B:

Oswalt explains all. He and Doug Stanhope are my favorite comedians
  8:34am
Caryn:

@Elwyn: I rarely play anything that could be considered a full-on "PC game" anymore. Nowadays, it's mostly card games and mahjongg and other stuff like that. I just don't care for the new games.

OK... now I gotta get ready for work. Meghan - Kaufmann's over by PABT might be a good resource:
