  8:36am Van in DC:

sweet! That's better :) Good morning!

Annie - I got my swag a few days ago, thanks! I doubt they'll ever play much from my playlist I sent in though, ha ha.

Speaking of Kickstarters - congrats to WFMU the Movie!
  8:38am Van in DC:

I get to put in exactly one subliminal message for the film. Thinking of:

LISTEN TO GTDR!

:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44am Doug Schulkind:

Forget subliminal, Van. Shout it from the mountaintops!
  8:47am annie:

hey van, we'll take it under advisement... i'll put the bug in kim's ear
  8:50am Van in DC:

That Blo - Blo was great!
  8:50am listener james from westwood:

the coffee elves were active in my building too. a departing tenant left a never-opened mr. coffee in the lobby. coincidentially, my braun was showing signs of heading to the drip-percolator's graveyard. so i snagged the free replacement.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52am Doug Schulkind:

The first set on today's show will take us to Bulgaria, Wisconsin, Scotland, Nigeria, Appalachia, Georgia, Jamaica, and New Yawk!
  8:53am annie:

i love the coffee elves...did the stream just go down?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54am Doug Schulkind:

Blo was a Nigerian rock trio, Van. The name is derived from the first letter of the musician's names: Berkeley, Laolu, and Odumosu.
  8:56am annie:

back again, now i have to find a router/modem elf

  9:20am Paul Sherratt:

Don't know Doug but I'm regularly concerned by how Twitter is constantly encouraging stalking ... ( Mitt Romney in my case, not many minutes ago )
  9:21am Paul Sherratt:

Johnny Barfield - The Voice ! ( wonderful )
  9:23am listener james from westwood:

i think about half of my twitter "followers" (that term is too messianic for me) are the result of auto-signup-bots. not sure how they found me other than piggybacking on other followers of mine. so mittens following you might have been the work of the robot menace.

Hiya dc pat!

Oh, an I said "Russian," but actually this is Georgian. Sorry!
  9:37am kat330:

Very belated "HI" back atchas, Annie & Bob!

This Russian piece is really similar to early music, like 14th C. Machaut. Love it.
  9:39am kat330:

Ah, Georgian Machaut. The harmonics are the same.
  9:39am Paul Sherratt:

Sssssssssssssssssegue.

  9:42am kat330:

BTW, Doug, does "Unifentified" translate as "not at all boggy"? :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

@kat330
It means I can't find my reading glasses to parse from the tiny print who the hell that was. (To my partial credit, I think there is no artists identified, I just can't confirm it.)
  9:45am kat330:

I hear ya. I've learned now to use the ctrl-+ on the comments fields in order to read and type marginally better.

  9:51am kat330:

Siberia, eh. Why the caged bird sings. Trying to think of a clever response to s b/p's "A bird in the mouth" but nothing clean comes to mind.
  9:51am Maricôt:

She said "I put papaya there"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

I wonder which movie that was from? I'm sure it's nothing I've seen...

  9:58am Holly in NC:

Morning everyone! Heading for 108F today, strategizing how to stay cool. Library most of day, and then parlay a 1 hour cat sitting gig into an overnight, I think (family said I welcome to stay, I hasten to add). I hate summer. Love GTDS! :-)
  10:02am kat330:

Hi, Holly! Libraries have kept me cool, too, on many a hot, hot summer day.
  10:02am Domenic:

stay cool Holly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Doug Schulkind:

Jesus, Holly, 108°F?!? That's unnatural.Good thing the NC legislature is wishing away rising sea levels, eh?
  10:02am listener james from westwood:

i'll bet a dime on that library/cat parlay. that's a winning ticket right there. and ditto on summer. i much prefer autumn.

Rocky Horror sings like a canary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Doug Schulkind:

Yes, Van! Thank you. (Sorry about that pop-up ad that starting blaring when I opened that web page.)
  10:04am kat330:

Album entitled "Los Angeles River" -- how humble of Mr. Garcia.
  10:07am Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: I heard that! But, don't worry: there's so much crap that opens in web browsers nowadays, I didn't know if that was you or me. And since it shut off right away, I didn't care!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Doug Schulkind:

@kat330
"Los Angeles River" was actually a title given to the compilation of Garcia's work released by a label in Barcelona. I found the original LP's info and put that in the playlist.

@Matt
Since I am 'casting from my computer, all the sounds it makes are live over the air. Occasionally I forget this and dump my trash in the middle of a song.
  10:11am kat330:

@Matt: 'swhy I keep my computer speaker on mute until I need it.

@Doug: Considering how the LA River is a drainage ditch for most of its length, I thought it a humble symbol. :)

  10:13am Holly in NC:

Yes, here in the land of nosea level rise we're looking at a solid 5 days of hell. Today will feel like 115F. ""We're really talking about something unprecedented here," said WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner. "It's most likely going to be the most intense hot streak that we've seen since, well, ever." "For those that think we're inflating these numbers, the atmosphere continues to exceed even our expectations," WRAL Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel said. "We're going for the hottest temperature ever observed. I don't take that lightly." Me either! I'm actually worried about *my* cats, they're stuck in my house.
  10:13am ndbob:

sheesh Doug
  10:13am kat330:

Yeah, we had to go to Florida to cool off last week. Go figure.
  10:14am Evan:

Yep. I'm right down the road in Greensboro and we've already hit 91! Play some COOL music please.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

@kat330
I was all over your ironic sensibilities!

Hi Evan, sorry to hear you're baking, too.
  10:16am Hugo:

Hi all. 65 over here (in Fahrenheit), so staying cool.

A local weather web site has this satelite pic of the US, red denoting hotter than usual, blue cooler than usual. Large forest fires in parts of the midwest.

According to NASA, extreme temperatures are going to be more common in the future, hence higher risks of forest fires.

@Hugo: We'll gloat back atcha next January! :)
  10:18am Van in DC:

  10:20am kat330:

And the track titles are evocative, too. I used to dance under the name Effusive Melange.
  10:20am Matt from Springfield:

My favorite part would be...this. No wait, the next song! No wait, the previous song...
  10:21am Matt from Springfield:

Like this "Spring Sunrise"--2000, sounds much older than it is. A little Latin flair in there too!
  10:21am Hugo:

@kat330: That's when we all fly down to the Mediterranean or further on to the Canary Islands!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Doug Schulkind:

Morning Duke! The crazy and lovely thing I often notice is that during my "jazz" sets, the audience size GOES UP. If they're not listening before, how do the know to tune in?! (It can't just be from playlist lurkers.)

@Hugo, you will always be cool!

Prayers and breath holdings for our friends and listeners in Colorado Springs. The photos from there are sickening.
  10:24am kat330:

Yeah, Hugo, my Finn hubbie's family went to the Canary Islands most years. Reminding me, it's PG's (JT's) birthday on Sunday, and I've much to do, esp. with the week away.

Doug, how 'bout some great music to wrap by? Oh, right it's on already! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Doug Schulkind:

How fucking great is it that this track still has another four minutes to go. (Sorry for my language, Van.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Doug Schulkind:

It is my spectacular daughter's 12 birthday on Monday. We got her an iPad. (Shhhh, DON'T tell!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

Actually she surely knows. She told me to get a light-blue cover for it. I said, sheepishly, "for what?" She rolled her eyes. Again.
  10:27am Carmichael:

Good morning Doug and everyone. It's fiscal year close here in the gubmint, so I will turn the music up waaay louder than usual to drown out the last-minute frenziers!
  10:27am Van in DC:

Oh Doug, ha! I'm loving the long play too :)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Doug Schulkind:

@Randy
No way, I am too cheap a bastard.
  10:29am kat330:

Awww, she'll still be thrilled! I have a wonderful photo of a large crab that literally posed for us on Cocoa Beach -- for JT it was crab meeting crab. A pic for your daughter here: http://jtlindroos.tumblr.com/
  10:30am Parq:

Ah, so Lincoln is in they eye-rolling phase. Enjoy it while you can. You still have the sullen phase and the constantly crying phase to get through. And yes, that Watts track was freaking amazing. (Although I like the way you worded it better.)
  10:31am randy:

:) trust me you'll never hear the end of how some other kids in school "all the other kids" have iPad 3's"
  10:31am Evan:

Perfect song choice! It's now down to 88 degrees in Greensboro.
  10:32am Artie:

Beautiful set Doug. I am transported.
  10:34am Holly in NC:

Happy birthday to Lincoln! Just make sure you do NOT get a UNC shade of light blue. There are many other lovely hues.
  10:36am Carmichael:

Good, at least I didn't miss the Okie music set this week.
  10:36am Holly in NC:

@Evan - 88F here in Durham also. Veritably chilly! I need to start hustling so I can finish chores & desert my house before mid afternoon.
  10:36am kat330:

Or a photo of a crab doing nothing much at all? He was fearless as we neared, and would turn this way and that just like a model on a photo shoot.
  10:37am kat330:

OK, wrapping time. Love to mention some of JT's goodies (all movies and books), but he might in fact read this later.
  10:38am Matt from Springfield:

Ah, Lincoln has my mother's birthday! (Turning...well, I'm sure she at least *remembers* when she was 12!)
The chill air and lovely foliage of October has quite an effect it seems...
  10:39am Michael:

12 is a great age Doug - Happy B-day to her. Now wait til she's 16/17/18. Oy!
  10:39am Parq:

I assume that, by now, everybody who's so inclined has seen the vid of a dachshund good-naturedly harassing a crab at the shore. Dox fan that I am, I keep going back to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Doug Schulkind:

@kat330 Have you seen the puppy/crab battle video. Aw, cuuute.

@Parq The eye-rolliing began about the time Lincoln could hold her head up on her own. And. Hasn't. Stopped. That's a lotta rolling.

@Randy I am bracing for the worst.
  10:40am listener james from westwood:

82 in westwood right now, but compared to the breezy, dry mid-90s we had tues and wed, this one is gloppy and disheartening. not a bad idea for anyone w/ older relatives living in hot areas to give them a call, make sure their cooling options are viable, etc.

@Holly in NC--it was 92 until Doug cooled things off with that Trevor Watts tune . . . don't reckon it'll last though. Hang in there! October's right around the corner.

Thankfully I've got sleep covered tonight, tomorrow & Sunday nights are just going to suck. And Monday, Tuesday..... ;-)

  11:14am paul b:

Doug,

Some time back I heard a great song on FMU called "Maria Bethânia", from the early 70's i think. Which was sung by... I got to go look this up now... Caetano Veloso. Maria was his sister. both very well known musicians in Brazil and beyond, apparently. At some point in the future when you're putting together a theme set do you think you could devote one to them?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

@Paul B.
It would be a pleasure. Caetano is sublime and Maria is wonderful, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

Olof Arnalds did a song called "Maria Bethânia," was that what you heard?
  11:17am Carmichael:

Doug, now you're opening the door to Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimiento, Gal Costa, and many others. That would be an awesome show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

Ooops, I should have read more carefully. Yes, Caetano did write a song named for his sis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Doug Schulkind:

  11:19am Carmichael:

Scott Walker even did a version!
  11:20am paul b:

Not sure, my notes (which are non existent on this) are incomplete. I think it was Fabio who played it, the story at the air break was that the musician singing it was living in Chicago at the time and musically asking Maria to write him a letter.
  11:20am Artie:

Mr. Krebs, in his capsule review, did nothing to eliminate the possibility of future joshing about that kid's knees. If that's really the case, you're in big trouble, he said, wildly spraying accusations.
  11:21am Hugo:

Make sure to play "Atrás Do Trio Eléctrico"
  11:22am Carmichael:

Re: the dox/crab video: Ha, let's hear it for the wily crab! :) And if size is an indication, this one was a "rightie" while our encounter was with a "leftie."
  11:32am paul b:

@Doug @Carmichael. Ah clearly it was when Scott Williams played it in April. Carmichael, thank you for the lyrics link!
