Hi Joe, hi 12539! A pleasant-but-sweltering-evening to you!
12:08am
slugluv1313:
me too! i try to help with dog and cat (and rabbit and hamster etc. etc. etc.) rescue in the NYC "shelter" system so happy endings for doggies are rare treasures!
12:09am
slugluv1313:
YAY!!!!! HAPPY PUPPY!!!!!! and HAPPY HUMIDITY to everyone! :)
12:10am
Matt from Springfield:
@Joe: You included a tribute to your own dog less than a year ago--am I correct to assume the theme is "the DOG days of summer"? :)
And hi slugluv!
12:12am
12539:
It's hot enough that I wouldn't be surprised to see the Devil around here.
12:14am
Matt from Springfield:
Sounds like the chords to "Big Rock Candy Mountain" in a different rhythm. Similar vocal delivery to Harry McClintock too.
Yes. In laws in Alexandria. Mother in law in woodbridge. The game was fun actually. We were in shade.
12:43am
Matt from Springfield:
@Joe: My ethnic food radar is on: I finally tried Ethiopian cuisine a few weeks ago. There's actually a small "Little Ethiopia" in Annandale! And just tonight, I checked out an Ethiopian restaurant in downtown Springfield: it checks out as good! And much closer to me! They've always been concentrated on U Street, way in the middle of DC, so glad some are starting to move out my way.
12:45am
j-No:
Peter Sellers best work, aside from Dr. Strangelove (which Dan Blocker was asked to be in) was on The Goon Show.
12:46am
Matt from Springfield:
I'd love to check out the orig Goon Show, it sounds so great!
12:49am
Matt from Springfield:
*gently sways body to new release 2012 electro-chill selections*
@Matt: Love Ethiopian food! Wish I had some injera bread under my fingers right now!
12:53am
Matt from Springfield:
Next time, I'll teleport my leftover injera to you!
(oh right, we haven't perfected the WFMU-Playlist-Foodshare device yet...)
12:54am
j-No:
I always take along the plastic utensils from Chinese takeout, that I never use otherwise, when I go to an Ethiopian restaurant. The feel of some of the food reminds me too much of old timey Halloween haunted house tricks where they stuck your hand in a bowl of goop and said it was your dog's brains that they just killed.
I became jealous when I found out about the Pitchfork Festival in Chicago, which begins next week and has Hot Chip, Araabmuzik and a slew of other electro bands I would love to see; thank you Joe for bringing a bit of that to us.
1:00am
Matt from Springfield:
From Ewan MacColl, to Roberta Flack, to Flaming Lips/Erykah Badu, this one just keeps getting better.
1:02am
Julie:
I LOVE THIS JOE
1:03am
slugluv1313:
YES!!!!!!!!! really loving it too! (Flaming Lips/Erykah Badu)
1:03am
Julie:
I don't usually like her or them but this combination is magical
@Matt: My plaisir! @Julie/slugluv: Glad you like this! I feel like this should have been the show's grand climax. Oh, well, climaxing too early again!
1:06am
Matt from Springfield:
Hi Julie!
This is wonderfully magical--I don't want it to end!
1:07am

here's the video, for those who haven't seen the amazing thing: http://www.guavaleaf.com/video/24461/Flaming-Lips--Erykah-Badu--First-Time-Ever-I-Saw-Your-Face

KP:
In this town house, the only cool thing is Surface Noise. I'm melting.
1:13am
Matt from Springfield:
Writer of "I Will Always Love You", of course.
1:14am
Borscht Belt misfire:
"Shy? You're positively nuts!"
...
1:14am
j-No:
Ringo Starr is 72 today, He held a peace & love moment at noon today, where people all over the world flashed the (V) peace sign. Last active remaining original flower child.
1:14am
Borscht Belt misfire:
"Fetish? That's what my wife calls dinner!"
...
"What? Too soon?"
1:16am
Matt from Springfield:
Da da da DAH! Tequila andvodkaandguzzlingpills!
1:17am
Matt from Springfield:
@j-No: Lovely!
Although, Donovan never really left, and Dave Davies has actually become more "hippy-dippy" over the years.
"My sister's so fat, she guzzles pills...even though she KNOWS they're placebos!"
1:20am
j-No:
Yeah, back in the day, Dave was not really into it, and then Donovan spent a couple decades trying to get away from it, so I kind of discounted them. Ringo has never given up on P&L, man.
1:21am
Julie:
Dave & Donovan. I have nothing to contribute, just a happy smile
1:21am
Matt from Springfield:
@Joe: The National Examiner is the even more whacky pub of the Enquirer family. I've noticed that in recent years, Star has switched to nice laminated paper, and tries to sell themselves up, to People or US Magazine territory. While the Globe seems to be selling themselves down towards the Examiner's level.
Does the Weekly World News still exist? That was my favorite.
1:23am
Matt from Springfield:
@j-No: I like Ringo's comment in the Beatles Anthology about premiering "All You Need Is Love" live during the Our World satellite broadcast. About how that was peace and love, as simple as it gets, and he was proud to be a part of that moment in '67.
1:25am
Matt from Springfield:
@Joe: The WWN had the spirit of the Onion, but a surrealistic veneer of the Examiner and cheaper B&W periodicals like. Sadly they stopped publishing print copies of that, but it lives on through the Web.
1:26am
Matt from Springfield:
Btw, great stuff Joe! "The Lope Song" is a good candidate for bed music, methinks!
i agree with Julie -- MAGICAL! (and i am not a huge fan of either myself) and WOW thanks for the link to the video -- apparently quite *controversial*
1:36am
Matt from Springfield:
Single File is certainly the most distinctive part of the show, your own little unique thing!
Amanda Nazario sings along, Mary Wing plays records backwards, Irwin plays, uh, his newest "stars", and Joe McG plays the little records with the big holes!
1:36am
Matt from Springfield:
"The Lorelei", what a name for a soul band. This is a catchy number though!
I liked that you co-hosted a marathon show this year with Meghan, because as I pointed out: theme-without-format, meets format-without-theme! A perfect Yin and Yang pairing!
Woooooo! YLT, sounding like a certain Canadian rocker right here!!
2:17am
Julie:
He doesn't sound THAT much like Beiber there
2:18am
12539:
Funny you should ask, Julie. "During the Gulf War, he deployed with the Special Forces. He later earned a special commendation from George W. Bush for his use of sonar, which led troops to the spider hole housing Saddam Hussein."

Aaaaah Julie, I thought people were finally forgetting about him :)

2:28am
Matt from Springfield:
Dreeeeeamy cover! Loving Rainy Day!
2:32am
Julie:
Great cover indeed
2:34am
Matt from Springfield:
Wow, nice country-like a capella version here, now I find that Prelude is actually English folk! And that their version reached #21 in Britain.

That song has great production too, a soft tinge like on Arista records in the late 70s.
Joe McG:
Matt from Springfield:
Admittedly, the music sounds more upbeat, making this version less of a 'jerker than the original is.
