Familiar & forgotten gems from 50-plus years of music on the darker side, shoegaze, synthpop, goth, psychedelia, darkwave, with unapologetic detours into 70s pop. In a dark night of the soul, it's always 3 o'clock in the morning.

I've been enjoying your show immensely since I discovered WFMU a mere month ago. I'm disappointed in how much I have missed out on! If you don't mind me asking, do you have a favorite or important show in the archives that you have done for me to check out?

Perhaps a short link to an image, or would that afoul of the 'no html' limit?

And I just happen to have this night off again this week.

Sometimes. I do find it amusing that I occasionally listen to mp3s on a little flash player... of stuff digitized off of cylinders. And yes, *woof* *moo*.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06am
Julie:

ahhh.....
  4:20am
Berg:

this predates Cohen's version?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21am
Julie:

That is a really good question. He wrote it, didn't he?
  4:24am
Berg:

Other notable early versions were by Noel Harrison (whose recording was a minor hit) and seminal British folk-rock group Fairport Convention.[4] In fact Fairport Convention were among Cohen's earliest admirers, and their take on "Suzanne" was sung as a duet between Sandy Denny and Iain Matthews for the BBC in August 1968; the recording was released on their BBC sessions compilation Heyday.
  4:25am
Lynn Lockjaw:

Cohen wrote and published much of his poetry before he performed as a singer, so much of it was song by others first, but not sure if this was one of them.
  4:29am
Berg:

(that was from wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzanne_(Leonard_Cohen_song) )
  4:29am
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

Judy Collins was the first to record "Suzanne" (in 1966).
  4:31am
Lynn Lockjaw:

Thank you BadGuy, couldn't find a date on mine :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34am

Looking for a date, Lynn?
  4:36am

  5:30am
fred von helsing:

wishing for a neighborhood coffee place with bottomless cups and a decent soundtrack and interesting sidewalk traffic (and wi-fi and the day's papers and a pile of music magazines and blah blah blah blah blah)
  5:31am
Berg:

so what is today's wfmu theme? - still in shock of yesterday's Ken & Mark's "hump day" ! :)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39am
Meghan:

He was up in my room when I came in!
  5:40am
Orvan Taurus:

@fred von helsing I assume the blah blah blah is where you would have listed the pony....

Before I moved, there was a coffee shop that was only a few blocks from home that I tried to go to, but it was always too smoky for me to even consider. Now the only "coffee shop" in town (small town) is a grocery store kiosk. FWIW, the store does have wifi, but that's about it.

Thanks jules, nice show :D

@Fred - Pony Pie - better than cow pies, or Horse Apple Pie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55am
Meghan:

Frito Pie
  5:55am
fred von helsing:

I dunno 'bout N.NJ or NYC but we have this kind of a summer schedule http://www.alppipuistonkesa.info/ (the dates on the right are all clickable) and it's all in a public park with BYOB before a proper stage and w a proper sound system, so it's pretty damned righteous when the rain stays away (only to come again another day)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57am
Julie:

mm Frito Pie sounds soo good!

Thanks for tuning in everyone, see ya next week!!
  5:59am
