Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Favoriting August 16, 2012: Dusty Half-Baked - Interviews - 11 Flea Market Finds

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop-up player!

Artist Track Album Label Year Format Comments Approx. start time
Lake  Into The Night   Favoriting Paradise Island  Columbia  1979  LP  The Lake song, Time Bomb, appeared on Clay's Classics II (marathon premium).  0:00:00 (Pop-up)

Intro
This was my 5th show on FMU in two weeks - A fill-in for Irene, two fill-ins for Christ T. and two Dusty Shows. I didn't have much time to assemble it, so I took raw interview segments recorded Weds., August 15th at Madison Square Garden, and mixed them live with these LP cuts, obtained at Skippy's Flea Market in Hamden, NY, and at Marco's Flea Market in Walton, NY. I also had the occasion to attend the Delaware County Fair in Walton with my wife. A most enjoyable day of cows, horses, pancakes, and sun.

An Interview with Frank, Mgr. of the Dunkin Donuts at Penn Station, NYC.
I am actually appalled at the proliferation of Dunkin' Donuts stores everywhere, though I occassionally succomb to a donut (Blueberry Cake, Boston Creme).

Dead AIr
Gib Sage  Believing Things   Favoriting   Stop  1972  45  I was surprised to see this 45, mostly because it was on the Stop label out of Nashville, and I had only seen this label once before, on a 45 by Ron Photo (Feauto) an obscure and now deceased singer from my little hometown of Audubon, Iowa. I figured Gib abd Ron were label-mates and perhaps they knew each other. That was such an incredible time of musical discovery in my life. Sentimental me.

An Interview with Two Union Workers in front of Madison Square Garden, 7th Ave, NYC.

Two Rich Clowns

USA All The Way!

DJ Moment
Burgess Meredith  Everyman (Excerpt)   Favoriting Everyman - A Moral Play  Caedmon  ?  LP  Read about Everyman here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everyman_(play)

An Interview with Heather and her Mother from Staunton, VA.

Rebel Daughter

Big Dream for the Future

Welcome to NY!

DJ Moment - Salute to the Accuplaylist Visitors
Brady Kids  Drummer Man   Favoriting The Kids From the Brady Bunch  Paramount  1972  LP  Funniest Accuplaylist comment: "That's Bobby on drums!" I don't think so.

An Interview with Donald

A Mess ... a Mess!

Too Much Freedom

Secretive, Burnt-Out ... Bon Jovi

Scott Williams Mention ... BoxerTalk
Boxer  No Reply   Favoriting Absolutely  Epic  1977  LP  Many of these LP's were found outside at Marco's Flea Market, where they had been enduring rain, sun, and sleet for some time.
Note: I am just playing segments of these songs in many cases. If you like them, I encourage you to seek out the full-length versions.

Interview with an Un-named PR Woman

I Could Lose This Job (Lose Yours? dusty@wfmu.org)

Talking with Fabio ... the Lord of Pleasure
Pleasure  Selim   Favoriting Joyous  Fantasy  1977    Liked this

A Mention of the Upcoming DUEL Between Fabio and Clay Pigeon - Weds., August 30th. Just Two Weeks Away. Beginning at 4:30 EST. Don't Miss It!!!!

Interview with an Anonymous Passerby

Obama and Homicides
Family  Part of the Load   Favoriting Anyway  United Artists  1971  LP  Really dig this LP. More to come.
Many of these LP's I found this week were marked 'WONY' - and evidently were jettisoned by this radio station, operated on the campus of the State University of New York in Oneonta. Their loss ... our GAIN! Love it.

An Interview with Tony, who "sells stuff."

A Tremendous Chris Christie Fan

Dime Store Charlatan
Subtonal  Fever (Subtonal RMX)   Favoriting Semitones In Darkness  Elektrolux/Mikrolux  2002  12"  This artist was incorrectly identified as Mikrolux, which is actually the record label. My fault. The artist is actually, Subtonal, alias, Andreas Kauffelt. I find it difficult sometimes to identify artists, labels, song names, and song speeds on modern vinyl. It is almost as if the artists wish to keep things cloaked in mystery, or else I am just getting old and lack the contemporary deciphering skills to figure it out. This being said, I picked up about ten LP's worth of this stuff in the past couple of days at my neighborhood Goodwill, where some disenchanted Bristish DJ had apparently dumped them. His/her loss ... our gain!
Paul Williams  My Fair Share   Favoriting A Little On The Windy Side  Portrait  1979  LP  Check out the JUne 14th Episode of The Dusty Show for an interview with Paul Williams ... always welcome.

An Interview with Shana from Minnesota

Interloper Compares Shana to Katie Couric!

Our Fine City

That "Fargo" Accent
The New York Rock & Roll Ensemble  Dance of the Dogs   Favoriting Reflections  ATCO  1970  LP  Music composed by Manos Hadjidakis

An Interview with Janette

Obama Quits!

EMAIL ME Immediately ........ dusty@wfmu.org

Strange Dusty
Walter Brennan  The Farmer and the Lord   Favoriting Old Rivers  Liberty  1962  LP  Reminds me of Iowa. Sigh.

Rain and the Umbrella Man

An Interview with Chris - Construction Worker - Mohawk

Holding On To Heritage

High-Altitude Work

Do YOU Love America? Are YOU Hopeful for the Future? dusty@wfmu.org

Constant Redbone

Mohawk Farewell

Magic Mike - The Pick of Destiny
Sweetwater  My Crystal Spider   Favoriting Sweetwater  Warner/Reprise    LP  Interesting reading from WIKI ----- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweetwater_(band)
Cy Coleman  Reverie In Topaz   Favoriting The Ages of Rock  MGM    LP  Outro music during farewell banter with S(Andy).
Thanks for listening to this episode my friend. It was a bit haphazard ... a bit, 'half-baked,' as it were. There isn't always the time to produce shows the way I want to with all the hyper-editing, etc. I do what I can.

I also wanted to mention Occupy Wall Street, as I notice from time to time it is brought up on the Accuplaylist. I followed it pretty intensely during the zenith of the movement from last September until the beginning of the summer, but when the energy wained and the numbers dropped off, I guess I, too, fell out. I have been monitoring it to see if it gels again, or if it will be a catalyst for some new movement. Certainly, I would step in again if it appears to move the needle a bit more on the public consciousness scale. IN the meantime, I have been concerning myself with other issues. Politics, social concerns, and just everyday life. Getting back on the streets to talk to everyday people. I hope you enjoy it. Please feel free to send me any thoughts you have on the show or the world in general. I am always happy to get your input.

Summer is blazing by so fast. Can't believe it's almost over. Such is life ... like sand through the hourglass ... hope you are having a good time out there. Until next week ... take care and ....

OH, wait! I almost forgot! Don't forget the DUEL with Fabio and I, coming up in two weeks. I plan on taking him to the cleaners!

Always remember!

Clayton

At she acknowledges her inconsistencies...sounds like she's using Romney as a protest vote--although if she's voting in VA, that's no mere symbolic vote; this is a Swing State y'know.

@kata It's hard to get a warts-and-all from an autobio, but I suspect Johnny could do it if anyone. Sort of would like to read Johnny Ramone's new book (speaking of politics), but kind of dread the idea just as much.

Why doesn't spell-check recognize Obama's name?
  6:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

Now, re: the Paul Ryan fan, very good point, in whether we will have to accept a lower standard of living: "We already have". That's the truth! I don't know what we can do about it, in the short-term anyway.
  6:31pm
Danne D:

I'm not a fan of Romney or his Grizwaldian tendencies but "now the brown's coming down" was a bit much on that Devo track.
  6:31pm
John McCabe in LA:

the spell check industry is anti obama
  6:33pm
Danne D:

This guy wants to sleep with Cher?
  6:33pm

howdy dusters... joining in a bit late but happy to be here...

@John: Fantastic! I create PDFs every day in my job, so I shall say welcome to the Adobe-verse! :)
@Fredericks: Turn off spell check on your browser! Doesn't do me any good on the Net anyway, so many mis-spelled words.
  6:33pm
Philo Gristle:

I wish spell-check would recognize my (real) name. A good politically active friend during Bushwack years wrote me an email changing it (Juha) to Jihad...

If Romney gets elected we'll all have to ride on the roof. Only multi-millionaires get to ride in the car.
  6:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

Don't know what "Grizwaldian tendencies" are either, but the name kicks ass!
  6:39pm
kata:

add me to the list of Adobe-worker bees...
  6:39pm
david:

in some browsers you can highlight the word and click something to the tune of "add to dictionary" so it doesn't flag as misspelled.
  6:40pm
kat330:

I liked the joke noting that Romney & Ryan have one significant and unique thing in commong: They both have driven vehicles with dogs on the roof.
  6:40pm
Philo Gristle:

Griswaldian Tendencies = Chevy Chase
  6:41pm

It certainly was not voluntary encopresis.
  6:42pm

actually I'm in Portland OR Clay, I could never be a Californian !! :)
  6:43pm
kat330:

@Seamus: You mean the Romney pooch?
  6:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

Yeah, I was thinking "Clark Griswold"! Successful in business (like Romney), but also very clumsy, which I imagine Romney would be!
  6:43pm
Night Al:

I have the RNC here in Tampa Bay in ten days.
  6:43pm
kata:

[thanks for the shoutout though]
  6:44pm

Clark Griswold is also that guy who took his family on several theme park rides while holding somebody at gun point
  6:45pm
kat330:

Portland, kata? Do you hang out with Tony Coulter there?

And just scrolled back to see your din-din question: Sort of leftovers from a big grill fest. oak-plank chicken thighs, home-made potato salad (w/some chunks of grilled andouille) and string beans w/carrots.
  6:46pm
kat330:

Yes, Clay -- always so kind of you the shoutouts! The most conscientious DJ on that score I'd say.
  6:46pm
Philo Gristle:

I hate Illustrator, but have to use it daily since Freehand was killed & buried. Luckily I get to be a freehand illustrator on occasion.
  6:47pm

Weatherman just said the 'feels like' temp is 104 degrees outside. I haven't turned the AC off full blast for months now.

@ Matt ....I'm secretly hoping a hurricane blows through that week.
  6:48pm
kat330:

@david: [I'm WAY behind here!] Yes, we'd fix any such problem on OUR end. Unfortunately, our NYC friend who sent it did not.
  6:49pm

I love Illustrator. I hated it before I truly learned how to use it.
  6:49pm
kat330:

Kata, you should check out his Give the Drummer Radio program here. Tuesdays 12 - 3 pm eastern time. Or catch an archive if that's a bad time.

I have friends living outside of Portland in Warren.
  6:51pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kata: Portland, OR! So very many FMUers there! Listeners like you, Adam and various others, but also DJs: Tony Coulter, Belinda & Hova, ricardo montalban (KBOO, fills in for Tony), tons of PDX!
  6:51pm
kat330:

@Night Al: What region are you from? We've also had a brutal heat wave since first part of July. This weekend, however, *supposed* to cool down. We're in the Louisville KY area, the Indiana side of the Ohio R.
  6:51pm

yeah I know some other fans of his show, but he's web-only I think

kat330:

Never mind, Al. Scrolled backwards and see Tampa. Arrggh.
  6:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

Sweetwater played early in Woodstock--they may have been the first scheduled band, but due to crowds and traffic no one was at the stage except for Richie Havens--and the rest is history.

"Stillwater" was an actual band of the day, that was kind of expropriated for the "Almost Famous" movie. Excellent movie though!
  6:54pm
kat330:

Right, Philo! We both quite liked "Frailty" -- Peter Pan kid (from KY, no less), Jeremy Sumter, delivered a great line: "He's a demon."
  6:55pm
Marmalade Kitty:

this track, who is it? It great :)
