Josef & Gorki Plubakter | annulons l' Apocalypse | cavage #9 | cavage | So a friend of mine, Muriel, is French and wrote me this very nice email all about this track. I Thought it might be of interest to others as well... > Was it full of cursing? I presume it was... No, It is rather poetic and well written but it sounds full of angst to me. This kind of statement that wants to open consciousness and prevent the devastation of the planet and the human kind. It deals with the cycle of destruction and self-annihilation. First of all, I’ll teach you how to pronounce "annuler l’apocalypse" that means "annul the apocalypse!" or "Let’s cancel the apocalypse!" ;-) The intention is rather positive but the description that follows is sinister therefore the song is frightening. It’s the kind of advice that turns into a threat: I’m gonna tell you how bad it’s gonna be if you don’t stop this dull game, and I’m gonna make it f* scary for you to freak out! He starts by speaking about a group of idiots that don’t realize what’s the apocalypse is gonna look like. Then, he’s offering to describe how it’s gonna really be after the apocalypse, in order to make them think about what they are doing. By employing human metaphors, he pictures the earth like an organic mess that feeds itself with its own destruction. Mouths stand everywhere talking into a cacophony, but there are no ears to listen… no eyes to look… A few extracts: "… a sterile memory that looks for eyes to accompany its voice. They are mouths without a sight…" "… mouths that keeps aspiring the void and the smoke…" "The animal lay down into shreds on the earth that gets its power and riches from this sublime fertilizer that is organic material in process of decomposition." "Debris became raw materials. Green is the fruit of the perfect union between sky and dirt, between male and female." "… an invitation to silence, to wisdom…" Well, it’s more sophisticated that it sounds from my translation. He uses powerful images but there is something quite nihilist in the tone of his voice and a little conventional in the way the lyrics are articulated. Something that remembers me post-punk French bands like Pigalle and Les Garcons Bouchers. Something roughly punk! Too despairing if you know what I mean! I’ll lend you my Pigalle records. I still love them but I want to move on from hopelessness! I made some research on Cavage. It’s a real "Underground" label funded in 1997. They seem to be deeply anti-fascist and to some extend to oppose themselves to capitalism. They are also critical of the music industry. | 0:19:27 (Pop-up) | |||||
