Coming up today: new releases from Tom Recchion, Alexander Ross, and Eriek Van Havere's great EE Tapes label -- plus a whole bunch of '60s psych and '80s post-punk, all mashed together into one (hopefully) tasty patty.

good morning, tony! and greetings, all, from a rainy northern nj!

Greetings, Mr. Stash -- er, Hash.
  12:08pm
Rasputin's Hash:

This piece is as good as (if not better than)any of the best prog rock or Krautrock out there!
  12:10pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Hola, Senor Tony!
I just bought a space-themed BBC record that has that Holst piece on it.
Seems like lots of my LP purchases have been space-themed lately.
Avatar 12:11pm

Space is the place -- for records, anyhow. Hola, senor!

Space was the theme for the weekend though, as in, I'm running out of it.

I still haven't fully unpacked three years after moving, because I don't have enough space for all my crap. I may have to send some of it up into outer space.
  12:21pm
Rasputin's Hash:

or virtual space Tony!
Would you download your cds and store them in a virtual space on the web and then rid yourself of the physical cd etc.
  12:21pm
listener james from westwood:

uniting the themes of space and storage: before it was purchased by one of the big storage-space companies, there was a huge locker farm on the route i used to take between nj and boston called "hyperspace."

Manuel Van Brüssel:

Hola señoras y señores! Hola Toño Coulter!

@ Rasputin's Hash: Nope, would never do that. If I did, I would lose track of all the music I have. I need the objects themselves to serve as reminders/visual cues.
Avatar 12:24pm
tonyc:

Guten tag, Herr Manuel!
  12:28pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I went through a period of digitizing tons of CDs and selling them but had filled several hard drives of music that I almost never listen to. I also ripped a lot of it at 192kbps, thinking they sounded 'good enough' back then. Ffft!
  12:28pm
Rasputin's Hash:

a few years ago I was downsizing and downloaded a lot of my collection on to a 1tb external hard disc/media player.
I must say I hardly ever listen to the music on it now as it has destroyed my interest in the artwork, band information and details etc. that I had in each individual album.
The storage media may be useful but ultimately makes everything characterless and meaningless!
Avatar 12:31pm

Agreed, absolutely.

This Alexander Ross is a vinyl reissue of a cassette. I wonder if things that only came out on CD will now start getting reissued on vinyl?
  12:43pm

Well, here's a lurking friend, Manuel, and certainly far from Bruxelles.

Allo, all!

is that for the audiophiles out there who prefer vinyl to cd?
Avatar 12:44pm

Whereto in Finland? I have to say that Helsinki is the only Nordic capital I haven't visited, but on the other hand, several trips to Åbo/Turku.
  12:47pm
kat330:

@tony: A reflection of their cultural weirdness. :) Like international air guitar contests, "Lordi," and such films as "Rare Exports" and "Iron Sky." You'll have a blast!
  12:48pm
Rasputin's Hash:

personally don't see vinyl ,cd or any other media surviving the download onslaught.

  1:05pm

I don't think Obama is willing to share his chair.

I'm trying to imagine the visuals to this track - Bananafish. Somehow, I'm stuck. A visit to the dentist was never like this.

Do you think we'll have a show full of songs about Empty Chairs, or tracks exclusively by the Dancehall Reggae star Clint Eastwood or what?
  1:57pm

One can never guess what's up Mr. Schulkind's sleeve. The graphic Isaac, par exemple.

But I'm reminded of an absurd non sequitur I left the top of Doug's Friday list. I did not see the RNC Thursday. So I quickly (and incorrectly) extrapolated from LJfW's footstool and the box store graphic that it was a furniture store depicted -- thus my "bedroom suite" pun. Makes absolutely no sense when I reviewed it later with a bit more time.

@Tony: Well, the gap is actually in my own life: I became involved in a lot of classical music / singing in the mid-70s, and that sort of continued through the punk period. For me it was almost Hendrix to Nirvana. Not quite THAT long of a gap, but still....

The Free Design was a Delevan, New York-based vocal group playing jazzy pop music. Their music can be described as sunshine pop and baroque pop, which were pop music subgenres at the time, which later influenced the bands Stereolab, Cornelius, Pizzicato Five, Beck and The High Llamas.

This one?

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
The cruel truth that Tony's show will come to an end is only now looming on the horizon. You can curl up fetal in the corner, or you can remain steadfast in the desperate hope that TWO MORE SHOWS coming up later on the Drummer Stream will provide a measure of comfort:

At 6pm, I will be back with a 1-hour edition of Give the Drummer Some. The show will be an epic paean to jury duty (my service to which may put the kibosh on my Friday GTDS)

At 7pm, Kaminsky Kamoutsky with Jesse will be live on the stream. Jesse will be flying solo tonight from his new digs in Providence, RI.

Immediately following Tony here on your 24-hour Give the Drummer Radio, these fine artists will try to take the sting out of waiting a whole week until Tony comes back with Tape Hiss next Tuesday:

Les Tambours Du Bronx
Jackson C. Frank
Nubar & Ibrahim Bey
Mezz Mezzrow
The Blue Notes (the South African, not Harold Melvin's band)
Sonny Okosun
Djosinha
Blackman Akeeb Kareen & His Super Band
The Oriental Funk
Sutrak Aksonthong
