Two listeners:

Thank you Faye for your great selections week after week, bringing a little more rhythm and melody to WFMU! Not that we don't love noise, chaos (and absurdity) - but sometimes it's nice for the station to swing back a bit in the other direction (with shows like yours, Liz, etc.); a good balance across the schedule is ideal (in our humble opinion)...

BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

@Cheri Pi: You're soaking in it. :D
  10:07am
Robert:

Palmolive soap is called that because it used palm & olive oils. I doubt they're using olive oil in it today (maybe just a smidge to justify continuing ownershp of the trademark, like the coca & cola in Coca-Cola), but continue to use the trademark. They seem to be promoting it these days in the USA for the dish detergents only, but they still make cake soap and have branched into shampoos, liquid body washes, and bath foams in some countries by that name.
  10:09am
DCE:

I see.
  10:12am
listener mark:

Good morning Faye! Good morning children! Good morning Thursday!
  10:12am
Robert:

Showing my age...I still call tend to call them cakes of soap rather than bars. I checked the Google Ngram on that, interesting how over time "bar" susperseded "cake" as the word for soap, a little later in England than North America. Now that we get goods labeled for Quebec here in NY, I see the French word for it is "pain" -- bread, as in loaf.
  10:15am
fred von helsing:

Age and soap... my grandma bought Ivory in the big bars that you broke in half, in the ornate olden-style blue and white wrapper. At some point she was also making her own soap and my mom said it would just about take your skin off.
  10:16am
DCE:

love this dreamy-scape
  10:17am
listener mark:

The original factory for Palmolive was on Dutch Street. For two points and a Baby Ruth bar, where is Dutch Street. No googling!
  10:17am
Robert:

Grandma? Making me feel old. My sister & I used to get a bar apiece in the bathtub from that "twin cake".
  10:19am

Yes, this FWY is a nice moody track.

  10:23am
Robert:

Actually Donna & I usually just shared a single cake. The twin cake of Ivory, however, continued to be sold into the 1980s. I saved one in the hope it'll be a collector's item, along with a 6 pack of Powerhouse malt liquor cans.
  10:24am

  10:27am
Robert:

Daddy & I used to play tic-tac-toe on Donna's back via dermatographia in the bathtub. No, Daddy was not in the tub, but he being a physician wanted to show me that trick.
  10:30am
Brian in UK:

Legend days are over.
  10:30am
Robert:

As to our own Grandma, she used Camay at her house. Camay, with more coconut soap, is stronger than Ivory in terms of detergency, but they rarely advertise it for its grease cutting.
  10:33am
Cheri Pi:

We have a local band in Cincy called Soapland. Cincy is known as being a soap town due to Procter & Gamble's long dominion. (i use Dr. Bonner's lavender)

~L:

Today's music history lesson: From WikiP:" Paloma Romero was born in Southern Spain into a family of nine children and shared a room in their family's apartment with her four sisters.[1] She attended Catholic school, but by age 13 had grown bored and begun to challenge authority. She moved to Madrid and found that she was still unhappy with life in Spain. In 1972 Romero moved to London, England. In West London she lived in squats with different groups of hippies.
While living in London, Romero moved into a flat with her boyfriend John Graham Mellor (then nicknamed "Woody") whom she dated for two years. At this time punk was exploding in London, Mellor had just joined The Clash and changed his name to Joe Strummer. When Romero met Clash bassist Paul Simonon, he asked what her name was. Unable to easily pronounce "Paloma", Simonon wise-cracked, "Palmolive?" Finding this amusing, Romero decided to adopt Palmolive as her stage name."
  10:35am
Robert:

Of course Daddy or Mother was also there just to supervise the bath. Being vaguely phobic of the water, when we got older I used to contrive reasons for either of them to come in the bathroom while we kids, or at least I, was in the tub.

Actually I bought two 6s of Powerhouse, draining only one pack for the cans.
  10:36am
12539:

"BleibEt..."

(great mix)
  10:38am
Robert:

Almost as long as Procter, Jergens has been making soap in Cincy too. P&G now no longer owns the soapmaking plant, contracting it to a local co. they sold Ivorydale to.
  10:39am
maestroso:

Well played Bach. Beautiful.
  10:39am
Robert:

In fact, P&G is now trying to outsource as much as they can from the American operation.
  10:40am
other david:

I like my Bach served slow so you can savour every note - Rosalyn Tureck probably my favourite
  10:41am
fred von helsing:

Jean B is da bomb
  10:43am
fred von helsing:

"Detergency" sounds like a frantic female fronted punk band about putting an end to housewifery
  10:44am
listener mark:

What is happening in Broadcast Studio A? Keep an eye on those turntables. They sit there with their smug attitudes. I don't trust them.
  10:45am
DCE:

haha, very good, fred von helsing!
  10:45am
Robert:

Paloma is also the Mexican word for the triangle salute, a powerful firecracker made of folded paper rather than a tube or cube (kubisches kanonenschlagen) or round bomb (maroon). It's called a paloma because the isoceles right triangle method of folding tends to leave a birdlike shape. Americans using the isoceles right triangle method wind up with an American flag fold instead. I use the equilateral triangle method, which is easier to fold but tends to allow powder to leak at the corners if you don't tape them well.
  10:47am
Robert:

Well, fred, remember "Leader of the Laundromat" by The Detergents?
  10:50am
Robert:

Anyway, palomas speak of hand mfg., while for mass prod'n it's faster to fill a bunch of machine-rolled tubes with powder. Palomas also tend to use an organic powder as fuel such as sodium salicylate (the basis of whistle mix) rather than the more powerful but expensive pyro aluminum.
