Doug, quick hello/goodbye, we are off for a few days in the country just now. Catch you on the rebop. Hang the rich.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05am Doug Schulkind:

'ullo Brian. Have a cracking holiday.
  8:09am duke:

Happy Friday one and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings Sir Duke!
  8:39am dcp:

ok GO!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43am Doug Schulkind:

I will have went soon!
  8:59am ndbob:

morning Doug and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00am Doug Schulkind:

Hi ndbob! Thanks for getting up early!
  9:00am Van in DC:

Not late! Hi Doug!
  9:02am listener james from westwood:

a glorious friday to all! brian, travel safely and have a relaxing escape from the madness!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Doug Schulkind:

Hey Van! And LJFW, too!
  9:07am Michael:

Morning all. Propped up and pretending to work while listening - let 'er rip Doug!
  9:07am holland oats:

greetings drumma et al - don't shoot the piano player!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Doug Schulkind:

Morning Michael! Holland, I believe we got there too late for the piano player...

  9:13am listener james from westwood:

today is a momentous day: my 20th anniversary as a wfmu listener. 9/14/92. same day as my first real post-college job. (my new boss was a listener.)
  9:14am Parq:

And Bush said, that's awful -- how many is a Brazilian?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Doug Schulkind:

Wow, Listener James, I am honestly proud and thrilled to share the moment with you. It has been a helluva coupla decades.
  9:17am ndbob:

@James - great! My first day was sometime in 1998 with Charlie's show - I had only one phone line, so I had to go offline to call him and say hello
  9:18am duke:

@LJFW Happy 20th anniversary! I have no idea when I started listening to WFMU. One day, there it was. It snuck up on me.
  9:19am duke:

When does the topless bathing suit part of the show start?
  9:21am Parq:

Congrats, James. 33 years for me this month.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Doug Schulkind:

Duke, let me get through the bottomless part of the show first. (In other words, next set.)
  9:25am holland oats:

hmmm, the hound, remember him? mid-80s freeform baby!
  9:25am listener james from westwood:

honored to be here hearing, and to hear-hear those here. the djs and listeners to this station are beyond compare. i really cannot imagine how life would have been sans fmu. and parq, 33 years is a mighty sweep of time. looking forward to reaching that milestone, too!
  9:26am listener james from westwood:

i do indeed remember the hound. spent many a saturday copyediting with him, laura cantrell, and wildgirl enlivening my efforts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Doug Schulkind:

Yo Parq! Happy toidy-toid!
  9:30am duke:

I feel like a youngster here. I've only been listening for about 10 years. Fool's Paradise was my gateway drug to WFMU.
  9:30am Michael:

Congrats Listener James. I've been tuning in - when tuning in was the only way - as long as Parq I guess. My Satrudays were spent with John Naruki, who was quite a character.
  9:32am holland oats:

in my day LCD was an ACTUAL MAGAZINE! (still have a couple covers taped onto random record sleeves - if only i knew which ones!)
  9:35am Parq:

I met John N. once. He's the only FMU dee jay who turned out to look anything like what i pictured from his voice. I told him that, and he said he didn't know whether to say 'thanks' or 'fuck you.'
  9:36am Michael:

His Willie The Pimp opening and his love of Boxing I recall vividly.
  9:37am listener james from westwood:

i came in after the narucki era, i think, but i do still have a stack of paper lcds. including the catalog of curiosities.
  9:40am listener james from westwood:

parq, in my case it was rex who matched the image in my head his voice conjured.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Doug Schulkind:

  9:41am jill:

good morning all. I heard Professor Allen this morning on Amy Goodman's show. That was good stuff. Check the rebroadcast online in case y'all missed it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Doug Schulkind:

I edited one issue of LCD. It was the one with the David Sandlin "keyhole" cover.
  9:48am holland oats:

awesome - the book that princeton press put out was a fitting tribute to a great mag
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

I was able to catch the last half of the live streaming video of this morning's Democracy Now. What a smart guy I yam for marrying such a smart gal.
  9:54am ndbob:

never heard this version before - I know it from the Dickey Lee version
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

Dickey Lee's is the more famous, but Razzy wrote it.
  9:58am ndbob:

I see that there are no Democracy Now radio stations in North Dakota - not surprised
  10:01am listener james from westwood:

i was looking at websites of heartland radio stations for work recently. so many of them were airing syndicated right-wing program packages for much of the broadcast day. if i ever had to drive cross-country i'd either get an iphone so i could stream fmu or just pack the current ipod with a month of archive mp3s.
  10:05am ndbob:

Driving back and forth from the East Coast to here is the only time I listen to Top 40 radio - switch between that and CD's
  10:08am joe:

'ello folks.
  10:09am ndbob:

hello Joe!
  10:15am Van in DC:

Ya, the O's are hot hot hot right now for sure.
  10:16am Michael:

Was the station WHN Doug? Mets were (and are still I suppose even here in Boston) my team too.
  10:17am Listener Gregory:

Thanks for your baseball stories, Doug. Now I feel better about playing with and then losing the ground-rule double ball hit by Mickey Mantle when I was a kid. It wasn't signed, so it wasn't worth anything, but *I* knew that the Mick had hit it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Doug Schulkind:

It is the first time in my daughter's entire life that the Orioles will finish with a record above .500. Crazy.

I assume, so, Michael, by I don't remember. My pop's would know. He just turned 93, but his memory is sharper than mine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning Joe and Listener Gregory!
  10:33am Van in DC:

So...born an Astros fan, admired the Blake Street Bombers in Colorado for a while, sucked into Braves fandom later, then became something of a Rangers fan last year while living there...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Doug Schulkind:

I was pulling for Texas to silence the La Russas last year. I could never root for the Tomahawk Choppers.
  10:37am Matt from Springfield:

Morning Doug and everyone!
Never heard of reggae "Scotty" before but his banter is sure interesting!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Doug Schulkind:

Hiya Matt! Scotty does a killer tune called "Sesame Street."
  10:40am Matt from Springfield:

It'd be awesome if that was a reggaefied version of the show theme, with a spoken interlude by Scotty.
  10:48am Matt from Springfield:

Happy WFMUversary LJFW!
I enjoyed reading about your WFMU gateways. I don't remember the exact date, but I've been a loyal listener since April 2009. It was specifically Irwin on Wednesday and Brian Turner on Tuesday that started me up, and kept me tuning in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

Alas it ("Sesame Street") isn't Matt.
  10:51am Matt from Springfield:

That was also the premiere month of the Free Music Archive. Our live coverage of the Primavera concerts began shortly thereafter, Doug's Mining the Motherlode blog posts had just started a few months before. So although I was new, there were many things I was experiencing for the first time, along with the rest of yinse.
  10:54am Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: Aw shucks! But that just means there's a reggae song in my queue I have to record then ;)

I don't remember if Ken said it was 2009, or April 2009 specifically, but I also fit into the demographic of online listeners for that period--when he said online listeners officially overtook terrestrial listeners of FMU. Though it's still a NJ/NY dominated demo, he said at the same time the plurality of listeners are those who listen both online and on the radio.
  10:55am listener james from westwood:

thanks, matt!it's one of the few "this is where i started" moments i can pinpoint, prob. b/c it was also my first day of real work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

@Matt
I don't think online has outnumbered terrestrial in terms of actual listeners. It HAS outpaced terrestrial in terms of financial support during the marathon.
  10:57am Van in DC:

Holy screaming sax! Nice :)
  10:59am Matt from Springfield:

Perhaps that's what Ken meant; in every case I'm glad to put money where my mouth (or maybe EAR, in this case) is!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

Coming up in October will be SILENT MARATHON on WFMU (and this stream). That is, there will be no vocal pitching, but donations will be solicited via email and social media and comments and such.

Shhhh.
  11:04am Matt from Springfield:

@Van: "Screaming sax", cool, I'll have to remember that one to describe that kind of sax playing. I've used "machine gun sax" ever since I read a journalist describe the saxophone at the end of "Get Ready" as machine gun sax!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

@Van
That's all you ever think about, sax and violence.
  11:06am Michael:

Love me some Wayne Shorter. Always.
  11:09am Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: Emily Litella! That was Gilda's old lady character on SNL. In addition to supporting more "violins on television", I'm sure she would support more "sax" as well.
  11:09am Matt from Springfield:

@Michael: That's the Wayne and the Shorter it :)
  11:09am Van in DC:

Hey Wayne Shorter was #12 on that list of the 50 top sax players of all time!
  11:12am Van in DC:

Oh and yes, sax and violins, yes, always :)
  11:20am Matt from Springfield:

Pizza + The Big Lebowski! Very fun!
  11:22am Van in DC:

home made pizza. foot long hotdogs. Doug you are making me hungry :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

Every Friday, I go to a local pizzeria here to buy a ball of pizza dough. Occassionally, I get someone inexperienced behind the counter who asks, "Is that for here or to go?"
  11:25am Pascal:

Greetings all, from the Wisconsin Historical Society. Wasn't able to write earlier, but appreciated the baseball stories, Doug!
  11:26am Van in DC:

bwaa ha ha, yeah, I'll just sit here and plow through a ball of dough :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

Hello there Pascal!
  11:30am Pascal:

Ha, I knew this song sounded vaguely familiar, but I'd just gotten the album yesterday from the motherlode post!
  11:32am listener james from westwood:

a foodie friend who lived in indianapolis for 8 years found the local pizza so poor, he taught himself how to make his own dough, toss the pie, and bake the pies he was used to from back east. had he bought a house out there I could imagine him building a brick oven in the backyard for them.
  11:32am trish:

Behind the counter set to 'autopilot'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Doug Schulkind:

I am close to endeavoring to attempt to consider making my own pizza dough. Don't rush me, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Doug Schulkind:

Hello dear trish!
  11:33am Matt from Springfield:

Catchy Ethiopian dance music!
  11:34am ndbob:

There isn't any local pizza place here
  11:35am trish:

heya. Good morning.
  11:36am Van in DC:

Gots to run, thanks Doug. Enjoy the weekend everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

Bye Van! Have a happy weekend.
  11:39am Matt from Springfield:

Seeya later Van! Safe travels!
  11:39am ndbob:

Bye Van!
  11:40am Michael:

Doug - I make my dough all the time - it's a snap!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Doug Schulkind:

Michael, I can't make dough. I'm unemployed. (Hey-Ooo!)
  11:43am monica:

great carolyn franklin track, doug! butter approves. lovely show as always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

HI Monica! I was speaking of the lovely Butter earlier. And her lovely friend, too.
  11:47am listener james from westwood:

ndbob, it's my understanding they've undergone something of a food renaissance in indy since the early 00s; perhaps there's hope for your neck of the woods.
  11:48am Pascal:

I'd like to hear what DJ Screw would have done with all of these slooooow jams.
  11:50am listener james from westwood:

must head out in a couple of minutes. thanks mightily for the show, doug. it was a privilege to hit the big two-oh during gtds and with the whole gang here. i am truly better off than i was 20 years and 1 day ago. be safe, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

I'm not sure I'm old enough to know, Pascal.

LJFW, you are a Mensch (cross between a Mercedes and a Porsche)
  11:52am ndbob:

excellent show as always Doug!
  11:54am Matt from Springfield:

Funkiest hippie I've heard!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks, ndbob. Excellent listening!
