Interview with Phillip Stearns

0:50:56 (Pop-up)
Phillip Stearns playing NASA's website   After discussing how his simple copper coil translates electromagnetic waves into sound, Phil plays collages recordings from NASA's website - these are produced by relating electromagnetic measurements into audible frequencies. Now that's what I call an analogy! To hear these, check out nasa.gov/connect/sounds  1:04:19 (Pop-up)
"Indonesia Pop Nostalgia"   pulled from this real cool LP comp of funk + psych from Indonesia, all reworkings of children's songs. Preeeetty amazing.  1:15:51 (Pop-up)

1:45:48 (Pop-up)
Phillip Stearns Interview   Discussing the inner workings of Phillip's synthesizer and mathematics as a roundabout way of rediscovering traditional music harmony. Talk of throatsinging and no-input mixing.  2:06:57 (Pop-up)

Listener comments!

osvi:

Oh yeah, back were I come from, those were the jams that expressed our 8th grade feelings, through dedications, on the cheap AM station, at like midnight, on a school night.
  12:12am
osvi:

oops, "where I come from"
Avatar 12:16am
Nat:

Yep!!!! I'm STILL at an 8th grade maturity level pretty much.
  12:23am
sudo:

second disc gets dark as hell.
  12:24am
neil:

I have one of those phone taps. Fun to play around with.

Nat:

Amazing, D! I got me some smart listeners.
  1:17am
D in Miami:

Thanks, Nat! I found it and thought it was like a contact mike at first. Got nothing, but found out about it on youtube, where he places it on cd players, motors, phones and the like.
  1:24am
neil:

me vhs caveman. ugh. coaxil cable.
  1:34am
fred:

Good morning Nat

neil:

sometimes digital clocks amaze and confuse me!
Avatar 1:54am
Nat:

Hey Fred, bet you'd enjoy Phillip's earlier set in this show. Speaking of clocks, I was hearing about a radio station out in California where the hippie station manager took all the clocks out of the control room years ago so that the DJs would have no idea how long they'd been playing songs...enforced free-form indulgence!
  1:56am
fred:

I'm enjoying this set, I'll hit the archives later for the rest
  1:58am
neil:

nice! phillip glass plays video games?
  2:03am
neil:

my bad wrong phillip. i do like the way it bounces around in my head.
  2:13am
neil:

could it be workrd backwards so pictures become sound as ur sound is turned to textile? digitized image filter sound converter?
  2:13am
fred:

Tom Johnson too uses a lot of ratios and formulas, but the result is very different. I like both
  2:14am
Rob W:

Missed the performance, will check later, nice conversation...
  2:15am
DJ Fancy Feast:

Yes, do some mixer feedback!
  2:16am
fred:

@neil: someone at work is doing a PhD on that kind of stuff, there's already software out there that does that
  2:19am
Rob W:

Nat - we should have some Tom Johnson in the FMU record library, he recorded for Lovely Music (Robert Ashley, Alvin Lucier, Gordon Mumma, Pauline Oliveros etc label in the 80s) and records on that label came to FMU via the late great New Music Distribution Service (NMDS).
  2:21am
fred:

Tom Johnson's Galileo is really cool to see performed live: 5 pendulums struck on their highest points, generating all kinds of rhythmic ratios. Pierre Berthet -- another personal favorite -- performs it really well
Avatar 2:22am
Nat:

Fred, Phillip's asking which programs are made to translate image to sound? Got any good recs to check out?
Avatar 2:22am
Nat:

And thanks, Rob!!! Both for the kind words and the Tom Johnson rec...I'll play that next!
  2:25am
fred:

@Nat: I don't know, I'll ask about that and at work and get back to you. I heard people talk about it so I just know it exists
Avatar 2:27am
Nat:

Cool, Fred! Sounds very interesting.
  2:28am
neil:

guess with the right tools its the mind ov the craftsman to control whatever medium. human nature to change stuff. there-in art?
  2:31am
fred:

Nat, you might want to check out the NIME conferences. I hear some of the performances were really cool. Diemo was there earlier this year, about when he played on your show
Avatar 2:35am
Nat:

Will do, thanks for the rec!
  2:36am
fred:

I once heard station listener Zax play Stockhausen's Spiral on no-input mixing board, in a church. Pretty wild
  2:43am
neil:

  2:45am

  2:50am
