Amanda:

Hi guys! Please, please make a pledge to support WFMU during the waning days of our off-air fundraiser! You only have until the end of the month, and the station is far short of its overall goal. It's a smaller amount than is needed during the Marathon in March, but still very very important. Go to wfmu.org for details on it all, or click the icon on the upper left of this page. Love, Amanda

Carmichael:

Hi Amanda, and happy Wednesday. I won't make a joke about "Hump Day", promise.
  12:00pm
Brian in UK:

Hello Amanda. Been there done that got the T-shirt at the dark end of the studio. Well you know what I mean.

It is Get-me-over-the-hump day.

SteveL:

I've pledged 3 times this drive, in addition to my annual, monthly payment. It feels good!
  12:02pm
SteveL:

I hear Hazy-Shade music just fine

Looks like only $120 will do it. Pledge to the great Amanda!
  12:04pm

Your area.
  12:05pm
SteveL:

C'mon! Joe Ely is worth more than a few bucks for a kick-off track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06pm
Amanda:

I had forgotten to do the thing you need to do in order to see the monitors jumping on Sam Cast. This is a phrase that makes sense to .00001 of the people in the audience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm
Amanda:

(Actually probaby a larger percentage than that considering the size of my audience) (in my area)
  12:08pm
Humphrey:

You played it for her, you can play it for me. Play it again, Sam Cast.
  12:09pm
Sam Cast:

I understand perfectly.
  12:12pm
Carmichael:

I thought this was Shane on first listening.
  12:13pm
Fiveash:

I hurt my area and now I have to wear a sam cast.
  12:16pm
Mature Guy:

which "area" is that? teehee
  12:17pm
SteveL:

Sam cast when he saw the monitors jumping. His family would feast that evening.

Which one is the fungus?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Amanda:

It's a fair question. There may be more than one.
  12:25pm
Carmichael:

I was in the original cast of the stage production "Sam!"
  12:34pm
Doug S.:

If we can help Amanda raise just 100 clams more, hers will become the third show on Give the Drummer Radio to REACH THE GOAL.
  12:34pm
SteveL:

One hundred bucks to go! Coincidentally, that amount would get some lucky listener the War On Christmas CD.
  12:37pm
northguineahills:

I love this Red House Painters. Too bad the lead singer is such a dick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
Amanda:

Wouldn't it be great if everyone in the world of art were a nice person?
  12:39pm
Brian in UK:

Thanks for mentioning the fuckin' record fair. Well I'll be washing my hair that weekend or someones, mail it to me and I'll give it a once over. Got better things to do. Bitter & twisted 3000 miles away, me; never.
  12:42pm
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

No work meeting today! I get to listen LIVE!!!
  12:43pm

What's it mean when the dog's tail wags?
  12:45pm

They ain't updated that yet? The cow has a tail too ya know.

YAY, Rudy Schwartz Project!
  12:51pm
Fiveash:

Huzzah!
  12:54pm
Brian in UK:

Raising a glass here, Amanda. You have more DJs commenting than is normally seen in the wild.
  12:55pm
Ricardo Montalban:

How many DJs does it take to comment on a radio show?
  12:56pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I just threw that out for someone else to create a punchline for it. It's a crowd-sourced joke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
Amanda:

Zero: they are all too busy standing in judgement of the other DJ's song/segue choices.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
Amanda:

*judgment
  1:01pm
Doug S.:

So now three of GTDR's shows have met the goal and three are left. To have the entire stream reach the goal, we need to raise an additional $1,686.66 in these quantities:

D:O Radio: $310
Kaminsky Kamoutsky: $265
Give the Drummer Some: $1,111.66
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
Amanda:

(This program notwithstanding)
  1:04pm
Ricardo Montalban:

@Amanda: You win!
This program notwithstanding indeed. This is one of my new fave shows. Dammit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
Amanda:

Aww, blush, Ricardo. But come on! Everyone get that vote out for GTDS!
  1:05pm
Brian in UK:

NOTWITHSTANDING that's why I listen to your show Amanda, love the words. Now can you fit in pusillanimous for all the listeners who have not pledged YET?
  1:05pm
ndbob:

afternoon Amanda and everyone!

Ricardo Montalban:

Give some to Give the Drummer, peeps!
  1:10pm

Then milk went to the format where little kids talked about all they would accomplish when they got older because of their milk consumption.

Rudy's latest album is pretty goddamn amazing! Nasty Sarah Palin song that's worth a listen.

If they all put paper down then eventually no one will have a square to spare.
  1:15pm
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

Is it a sequel/prequel to Sheena Easton's "Sugar Walls"???
  1:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hello Amanda and Scenarians! CONGRATS!! Another goal reached! Happy to be a part of that!

And you can never have too many "Sugar Mountain"s, I'd like to hear Janis Ian's version.
  1:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

Wow, very country one for Janis Ian.
  1:18pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Whenever I hear songs with 'sugar' in the title, I think of all the advertising for sugary breakfast cereals I was subjected to as a child of the late-sixties/early-seventies. Breakfast cereals WE WEREN'T ALLOWED TO HAVE.
  1:19pm
ndbob:

good song here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm
Amanda:

Hi ndbob, MfS!
  1:21pm
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

Years ago Gerald Casale [of Devo] did the music for a Hawaiian Punch commercial that had "sugar is bad" subliminally hidden in the bass line.
  1:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

Joni!! Never can have too many versions, indeed! :)
  1:24pm
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

BLERG! Correction...Mark Mothersbaugh did the music. I just found the ad on YouTube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIfh0XMrg6w
  1:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Ricardo: That was before my era, by which time they'd changed the branding of cereals. From at least the 50s until the 80s, all the kids' cereals began with "Sugar" to hawk their sickening sweetness. Then health concerns downgraded them to "Frosted" or "Honey", and sometimes dropping adjectives entirely (like "Smacks").

So how bad is it that corn syrup was recently re-branded as "corn sugar"?? When sugar is actually a *better* word than what came before it! :)
  1:25pm
Matt from Springfield:

Melanie [Safka]!!
I have the live album Leftover Wine on vinyl. Appreciate the surface noise!
  1:28pm
Fiveash:

This is truly inspired.
  1:28pm
Ricardo Montalban:

@Matt from Springfield:I am just bitter that we never had those kind of brand-name cereals in our house, no doubt because our parents were dismayed that we would scarf down a whole box in one breakfast sitting. Nope. We wuz poor. Just bagged generic cereal for us, and the rotten kind, too.
  1:30pm
Jack:

Hi Amanda, everybody! Who's that singing with Leonard Cohen?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
Amanda:

@Jack -- was just going to update the playlist with that info. Welcome!
  1:34pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Wow! I didn't recognize that as Leonard at all! Not familiar with his music from that era. He really sang. I thought it was James Taylor for a minute.
  1:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Ricardo: Oh of course, you see the brand-name commercials, and that's what you want as a kid. Corn flakes are pretty much corn flakes, whether Kellogg's or not. But I imagine the generic sugary cereals probably tasted much worse than the generics of blander cereals.
  1:35pm
Jack:

thanks!
  1:35pm
ndbob:

@Matt very true
  1:36pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I accidentally played a Sonny Bono single at 33 1/3 recently and it sounded like early Leonard Cohen.
  1:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

Must be the first release of "Sisters of Mercy". Pretty arrangement, slightly baroque.
  1:40pm
Ricardo Montalban:

This is the song they play when you check into one of those suicide parlors in Soylent Green.
  1:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ahhh, meditation music.
@Ricardo: The record player "corrected" Sonny's pitch ;)
  1:43pm
Ricardo Montalban:

Don't apologize Amanda. There's no up without down. I was diggin' the down-mood thing.
  1:45pm
Matt from Springfield:

Leonard Cohen duet w/ Jennifer Warnes, wonder if DJ Julie knows about that!

Krusty was on *exactly* as long as needed for a laugh! :)
And I totally agree with Ricardo! WFMU is all about the ups and downs, preferably one after another.
  1:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

+9! A NON "How Do You Do" song from Mouth & MacNeal!
  1:51pm
SteveL:

Oh, this is the "up" you were talking about, no? [feet starting to move on their own]
  1:57pm
Matt from Springfield:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm
Amanda:

I don't know what you're talking about, SteveL.
  1:59pm
ndbob:

I need to go..excellent show Amanda!
  2:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

See ya later NDBob!
"Save It For Later"! This is a good one for your feet to start themselves up to...
  2:11pm
SteveL:

The music is friskier now. I approve, (although I had to step out briefly for a fire drill.)
  2:13pm
Ricardo Montalban:

I had a fire drill in my heart.
  2:18pm
BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

One of the Midnight Runners used to live in Dallas. He managed a couple of bands.

Night Flight played The Proclaimers "I'm On My Way" music video regularly when it first came out. My friends and I referred to them as "the Buddy Holly twins."
  2:21pm
Matt from Springfield:

@BGZ: Not a bad description of how they looked!
  2:28pm
Brian in UK:

Just 'cause it is two cents over target it is no reason for complacency. Keep the pledges coming.
Wot no Nick Lowe?
  2:29pm
listener james from westwood:

a little late, but been listening since 1 behind a conference call. congrats, amanda, on hitting your goal!
  2:29pm
Doug S.:

I think it is, by the laws of nature, impossible to do a bad version of this song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm
Amanda:

Brian makes an excellent point -- well, two excellent points I guess. The station needs to make its overall goal (the big one on the homepage) by Halloween at midnight!!!

Thanks LJfW!
  2:37pm
SteveL:

John Prine: What a sad, beautiful song. Thank you.
  2:45pm
SteveL:

How did the Rockpile album not win every pop music award ever?

Brian in UK: How's that do ya'?
  2:50pm
Doug S.:

While all pledge dollars get stuffed under the same big mattress in the middle of WFMU's staff dormitory, it is (I feel) crucial that this here 24-hour stream, Give the Drummer Radio, meet the goal set for it by the uppity-ups at WFMU. The stream is an all-volunteer effort, but WFMU still expends resources to keep it going (hardware, software, bandwidth, tech support, etc.).

It is vital that the stream be entirely self-sufficient during fundraising time. Furthermore, WFMU needs to be rewarded for its innovations and visionary risk-taking on behalf of its listeners. Therefore, a pledge to a GTDR program accomplishes many things at once.

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
Charlie Lewis will return to the streamwaves with another Busy Doing Nothing show, right here tomorrow at noon!

Three cheers to Amanda for making the goal! Three cheers to all these wonderful pickers and grinners for agreeing to perform on the stream, just as soon as Amanda's show pulls into the station:
