I actually like Hotel California....
  12:09am
Destroit:

Ha. Nice start buddy!
Avatar 12:10am
Joe McG:

@Holly: Would you believe WFMU doesn't have a copy of "HC" on LP or CD? Not even in the basement! I was thinking of playing it! Hey, Destroit! Spirit of '76!
  12:11am
mofocat in CA:

what was that 'radio' bit just before KISS?
  12:11am
12539:

I for one refuse to move my feet or leave my seat.
  12:11am
Chop Scott:

JOE--YES!!I still remember the day I came home from the Indiana mall with KISS Destroyer and Aerosmith ROCKS.

Hey, mofocat: Those are the Yip Yip Aliens!

@CHop Scott - My Aerosmith Rocks is SOOOOOO beat

@Chop Scott: Excellent! My grandma bought me the Kiss album when it came out. I bought the Aerosmith one myself a couple years later!
  12:13am
mofocat in CA:

Thanks Joe!

@Holly: This is my original copy. It still doesn't sound too bad, and I played it a lot!

rai:

what's next, Gimme Shelter? no, seriously, is it? I love the start to this show
  12:14am
Caryn:

For some reason, I guessed that you'd open with KISS...
Avatar 12:15am
Joe McG:

Thanks, rai. @Caryn: I'm so predictable!
  12:16am
Parq:

Happy anniversary, Joe. And Holly, there's a Hotel California in Paris that's a wonderful little place to say. Nuff said.
  12:16am
Holly in NC:

My god, for all of us commenters of an apparently approximately similar age, I suspect this show is going to make our heads explode.
  12:17am
amEdeo:

With regards to the whole show thus:
Schyeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
  12:17am
Chop Scott:

The Jack Douglous (sp) production and engineering on all the early Aerosmith issues set an American hard rock template.
Avatar 12:20am
Joe McG:

Thanks, Parq! Yeah, 200!
  12:21am
Caryn:

@Joe McG: I wouldn't say so. It's just that considering the theme of the show, what else would you be starting with? :)
Avatar 12:21am
Joe McG:

@Caryn: Good point! It's the UR-album of 1976.
  12:22am
Marmalade Kitty:

I was emerging from toddlerhood when these were hits :)
  12:23am
Caryn:

Am I the only person on the comments board who wasn't around in '76? I suspect I may be.
  12:25am
Marmalade Kitty:

we've always been here, Caryn :)
Avatar 12:26am
Joe McG:

@Caryn and Kitty: I was a wee lad back then, but I was there! This show may feel a bit nostalgic, but I'm allowed since it's my anniversary!
  12:26am
Caryn:

@MK: well yeah, but not in this current reincarnation.
  12:27am
mark:

I was 11 in 1976 and also remember going to the local mall and Camelot Records (which was 2 blocks from my house) to buy Kiss "Destroyer". Still their best record too.
  12:27am
amEdeo:

I was not alive then either. But that is true of many years before and after '76.I was however inexplicably alive in for three days in June of 1973.
  12:28am
Chop Scott:

I was 13 in 1976 and listening...older brother helped navigate.
  12:29am

I was 9, and just starting to spend all my money on 45s rather than Wacky Packages or candy. And glued, always to my AM transistor radio

@amEdeo: Ha ha! @Chop Scott: Yes, I had an older sister who paved the way for me down this crooked path I've followed since....

I was 4 yrs old. So impressionable.
  12:33am
Caryn:

@amEdeo: heh! I wonder what briefly brought you into being. Could it be the release of "Live and Let Die", the opening of the "Rocky Horror Show", the opening of "American Graffiti", or John Dean testifying in front of Congress?
  12:33am
Marmalade Kitty:

happy 200th birthday show!
  12:34am
G:

I was in a weird state because I lived in Brazil from April through August 76, which meant I didn't get the full anglophone/US experience at that time, and have been filling in gaps now and then ever since... i still believe i don't really know what it was like to have been in the US during the Bicentennial...

Holly in NC:

@G - Big ships, "Philadelphia Freedom", Yankees break fans' hearts
  12:39am

I'm kinda hoping for the Baretta theme, just because Sammy Davis Jr. hits that one right out of the park.
  12:39am

1986 was anniv. of statue of liberty and it had been restored. it was a bicentennial afterecho attempt during the latter Reagan years

How about Suzi Quatro? My cousin listened to her before she was Leather Tuscadero.
  1:00am

So, I was 15 in 1976... I still have my copy of Destroyer and Give Us a Wink.... the rest? It would be about another 5 years....

Without Suzi what would Joan have been
Avatar 1:01am
Joe McG:

No Joan Jett without Suzi Quatro, have to agree. Did Suzi have any big songs in 1976?
  1:03am
Julie:

no, 1975 and 1977..like she skipped that one
  1:05am

But Olivia put out two records that year, and I'm sure you needed to know that

  1:11am
Destroit:

And outta nowhere comes Kaplan! You just can't prepare for that.
  1:13am

At least you caught Kaplan, Caryn, let's focus on what's important:)

Miz Daisy bringin' us Revolutionary War history!

Hey Joe and everyone! Bicentennial '76 stuff to commemorate your 200th show or something?

  1:16am
Chop Scott:

You are killing me, properly!
  1:17am
Caryn:

@Destroit: true, but if I had to choose between, say, Ramones or Jessica Tandy talking about a frigging elm, I'd rather sleep through Jessica.

Glad you're also a fan, Chop Scott! I loved Joe's tribute to GSH very much.
  1:34am
Mike Sin:

Wow, this is a great show! Happy 200th show to Joe! Well I look back to 1976, I realize just what a great childhood I had... The constants throughout the year were essentially a Huffy bike and a transistor radio on the handlebars.
  1:36am
amEdeo:

Echoing Chop Scott & Matt from Springfield's sentiments here:
The Gil Scott-Heron piece was excellent, thanks Joe.
  1:38am
Chop Scott:

Yes, I stepped up my pledge and urge others listening or on the comment board to do the same. WFMu gives us so much!
  1:38am
Matt from Springfield:

Hi Mike!
Wow, a radio...on your bike?! That's awesome! It's...like a car radio, but on your bike! Must have been the king of your street! Yeah!
  1:39am
Mike Sin:

Last Bicentennial minute was presented by Betty Ford
  1:40am
Caryn:

The Bicentennial Minute: the "The More You Know" of '76.
  1:40am
Matt from Springfield:

Whoa, 70s themes! We're really in for it now! :D
  1:41am
Holly in NC:

Oh man, my Huffy! Though I think in 76 I still had my beloved handmedown noname 1 speed, pedal brakes, purple, flowered banana seat, white plastic basket on handlebars for transistor & such ....
Avatar 1:42am
Joe McG:

@ Mike: Thanks! My sister used to have that Huffy with the red, white, and blue streamers coming out of the handlebars!
  1:42am
Matt from Springfield:

Dangerous amount of dancing here tonight! "Car Wash" is more fuel on the fire!
  1:44am
Mike Sin:

The transistor radio was hung from its taped strap on the handlebars of a Huffy "Thunder Road" bike.
  1:44am
Marmalade Kitty:

I discovered wfmu 4 years ago, November '08! used to listen on real player :)))
  1:45am
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: In America, it seems like the Bayer Science Minute--every week they have a new one, usually between programs on NPR and public radio. It's about one minute explaining a scientific principle and it's practical use to the typical listener. I like those but think not enough stations air them.
  1:47am
Matt from Springfield:

Sammy Davis Jr "Baretta's Theme"! FMU commenters have gushed about that before, glad to finally hear it! You not only have a bird, but Sammy Davis singing your theme song--that's slick!
  1:47am
Caryn:

@Matt: hmm, sounds interesting

And can I say, this 45s set is weirdly appropriate for this weekend. Not only have I been on a 60s/70s' theme tune trip, but on Saturday, I also watched a music quiz, where one of the questions was about "Car Wash".
  1:48am
Matt from Springfield:

Dino De Laurentiis' "King Kong" remake theme--as heard before on Surface Noise :)

Hi Kitty! You're almost as long a listener as I -- since April '09 for me!
  1:49am
sd:

I didnt know there was a disco kong song. My very first movie. Have a framed 30x40 poster of it. Nice
  1:50am
Matt from Springfield:

Now, they need to have Tavares sing "Suicide Is Painless" lyrics over this hip disco track! ;)
  1:50am
Holly in NC:

I still listen via Real player! Dont like iTunes or Winamp. Not a luddite, just preference.
  1:51am
Caryn:

@sd: I, on the other hand, was familiar with the King Kong track, but this version of the M*A*S*H* theme? Utterly new to me.
  1:53am
Marmalade Kitty:

Holly I used to like the dancing sheep :D
  1:53am
Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: Never took to the Real player, I downloaded one mainly just to listen to old Archives! Glad in any case Pop-Up Players are avail from the Fall of '08 onwards.
  1:54am
Caryn:

It's sad that I remember all 3 Happy Days theme songs.
  1:55am
Julie:

I have this 45! B-side wasn't bad
  1:55am
Holly in NC:

Always thought it odd that my elementary school's chorus used MASH theme as recital finale...I mean, 6th graders warbling about suicide is, well, odd
  1:55am
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: I like listening to the Bayer science minutes, but I still like to add sarcastically at the end of them: "Bayer, our way of saying: yeah...sorry about inventing Heroin and collaborating with the Nazis! So we'll make it up to you with these science tidbits!" ;)
Avatar 1:55am
Joe McG:

This is by far the cheesiest set I have ever done. Hooray!
  1:56am
Matt from Springfield:

"Cyndi Grecco was an American singer who sang the theme tune to the popular 1970s American television show, Laverne & Shirley. Titled "Making Our Dreams Come True," the song (in which Grecco was accompanied by the Ron Hicklin Singers) was also put out as a single and charted at #25 on July 25, 1976. The song came out on the small Private Stock label (#45086). An album followed, though a second disco-themed single "Dancing, Dancing" failed to chart. She also provided the theme to another 1970s ABC television sitcom, Blansky's Beauties. Nevertheless, Grecco remains a one-hit wonder"
  1:57am
Holly in NC:

@MK - annabelle the sheep is dancing as we speak!!!!!!
  1:57am
T-Zero:

Howdy! Better late than never I say... Got crackers to go with this cheese? :D
  1:57am
Caryn:

Man, "Making Our Dreams Come True" is such a feel-good track!
  1:57am
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Joe, never knew who sang this or that they had a charting single off of it! The RON HICKLIN SINGERS, them again!

Hi Julie! What *was* the B-side to the Laverne & Shirley theme?
  1:58am
amEdeo:

I'm going to grab some sleep, goodnight everyone! Have a great rest of the show Joe!
And ALSO: Congratulations and a most happy, happy, HAPPY birthday to Surface Noise! Here's to the next 200,000,000,000!!

How's it going Joe? Good morning everyone
  1:59am
Caryn:

Whenever I think of John Sebastian, I think of him speaking on the Woodstock movie, being wetter than a haddock's bathing costume.
  2:00am
Yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Israel,Earth,Milky Way):

Got no idea how that happened. Can't trust Steve Jobs
  2:00am
Matt from Springfield:

Morning Yair! Looks like you have a smartphone, those things post very rapid comments!
  2:00am
Holly in NC:

Hi Yair!

Julie:

Daniel Blumin sent in the 70s to SPY on us
  2:03am
Matt from Springfield:

LOVE that intro sequence! It's a feel good song, Caryn, but that intro just makes you feel good whenever you hear it!
  2:03am
Julie:

Chuck went upstairs and never came back..
  2:05am
Caryn:

Oh, Joe, how the disappearance of Chuck annoyed me! In the Joanie/Chachi wedding episode, when Mr. Cunningham makes his toast about how he's raised 2 great kids, I always yell at the screen "You raised 3 kids, dammit!"
  2:06am
Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Don't look in the closet trunk, with the heavy lid...

Actually, speaking of "Argo", the end of '79 is the beginning of the Iran Hostage Crisis--Daniel came on board right on time for that.
  2:10am
Chop Scott:

I cried hard after the ending of "Silent Running", and of course "Son of Godvilla".
  2:10am
Julie:

Perhaps Chuck dodged the draft and Howard disowned him
  2:13am
Holly in NC:

@Julie - that is by far the most plausible theory, nice!
  2:14am
Chop Scott:

I meant "Son of Godzilla"
  2:14am
Marmalade Kitty:

there is a "chuck" in every family..

I say Chuck shacked up with one of his basketball buddies, and decided to move to either NY of SF, leaving the Cunninghams too embarrassed to mention him publicly ever.
  2:18am
Holly in NC:

I was so not cool in 76, no Bowie on my radar - except for his duet w Bing Crosby, which I did see - my whole family was rather bewildered. Not Bing's usual sort of guest.

What a brilliant album by Eno and Harmonia!

When I'm 64 'Grandchildren on your knee Vera, Chuck & Dave'

Matt from Springfield:

@MK: I'm sure there was a spin-off show for Chuck that didn't perform well. I was astounded when I learned of all the "Happy Days" spinoffs they made in the early 80s. Milked that franchise for anything of possible value, instead of writing new, originial shows.

Joe - play Be Bop Delux!
  2:27am
Caryn:

@Joe & Holly: see, my theory is entirely predicated on Howard being too much of a softy to completely disown one of his kids, but also on there having to be a reason why Chuck would not want to come back to the repressive small-town environment, and why the Cunninghams would not dare mention him again (in order to protect Howard's business and standing in the Leopard Lodge). Man, I think too much about these things...

Matt from Springfield:

Good morning Brian!
I always wanted someone to form a band with one girl and two guys, called "Vera, Chuck & Dave". Guess it's up to me then...
  2:29am
Caryn:

I guess "Happy Days" and "All in the Family" are the US tv shows with the most spin-offs (if we don't include the various Law & Orders or CSIs).
  2:30am
Matt from Springfield:

@Joe: ...and now from Eno to this experimental German Cluster! Wonderful segues tonight!

Joe McG:

@Yair: I was going to bring some BeBop with me, but I just played them a few weeks ago, so I decided not to. Everyone: Go listen to "Modern Music"!
Avatar 2:31am
Joe McG:

@Caryn: "Mary Tyler Moore" had a bunch, too.
  2:32am
Matt from Springfield:

Yeah, Law & Order, CSI, Survivor are all "editions" of the same basic show. Spinoffs would be a plot branch from another previous show. I was likewise amazed to find all the plot connections back to "All In The Family"--the NormanLearVerse, I call it.
  2:33am
Damien:

Great Eno musings... missed all of this at the time... was still buzzing with Station To Station...
  2:33am
Marmalade Kitty:

I remember "Happy days" toys... building bricks, rip off of lego, but not as good :)
  2:34am
Brian in UK:

Good job, Joe. I've lost the TV plot!!!
  2:34am
Caryn:

"All in the Family": 7 spinoffs
"Happy Days": 7 spinoffs (or by some calculations, 9), and was itself a spinoff
MTM is way behind with 3 spinoffs and a tv movie.

@Brian: These are all American shows. Most of the good ones were stolen from yours!
  2:37am
Caryn:

Hey, Joe, "All in the Family" was stolen from the Brits too!
