	10:03am Cecile: I read the review, what was scandalous about it. he's not as versed in art history as he thinks - I believe that Southerners black and white made junk sculptures long before there was a Kurt Schwitters. And I can see some people being threatened by solidarity - women artists get this all the time. At least he was honest about it. I felt it was an honest statement.

	10:15am Susan: What about African spirit figures? Collage or assemblage, yes, those are Modernist art forms associated with specific white artists, but combining materials to make sculptural form is certainly a huge component of a much older African culture.

	10:18am Cecile: I have an Alvin Lustig book, and he was upfront on how the spirituality of all the word influence his designing. there are African-inspired elements and shape in much of his work.

I'm no art historian but I bet in a matter of minutes I can find examples of assemblage that pre-date the artists who "invented" it. Then the rest of the article completely went to hell. 	10:30am Patrick: great! about the Ken Johnson piece, what an ignorant asshole! while the likes of Picasso and Rauschenberg may have brought the art of assemblage to the forefront there is a century long tradition of assemblage in the African American artistic community. perhaps Ken Johnson has never seen a quilt or heard any improvised free jazz. if anything assemblage is so deeply rooted in the African American artistic tradition that it pre dates picasso buy 100+ years.

	10:38am ffrr: Scott touts Baker as better than Bonham or Moon in his review, which is backed up from interviews in the film. This is what spurred the backlash.

A young lady next to me said "He sounds like Minister Farrakhan! he is hateful!" some people get to complain, and others don't in a lot of minds.

	10:47am Patrick: his use of the term beauty at the end of the piece is telling. in essence it seems like what he is doing is dividing the show into two camps, the work that he thinks has an element of beauty and the work that he struggles to understand, and instead of delving deeper and trying to make sense of the work that is difficult he is writing it off by saying at its core he cant understand it because it is not part of his tradition. thats really worrisome for a critic to say. isn't art supposed to be challenging and not reveal its self all at once?

	10:54am Susan: I was teaching an art history class at Baruch in the mid-90s & my peer reviewer was astonished that I discussed African art from a formal perspective. Of course, I taught the religious art of Europe from a formal perspective, too, but that's not shocking. There's this weird way of thinking that non-European art is all about use value or content rather than form. By extrapolation, African-American artists must be message senders rather than form makers or they're sell-outs. Goodness, what a really played-out argument...

	11:03am tim from champaign: I'm a huge believer in using empathy to create understanding between unique shared experiences that may not be my own. I used to be a social worker. I never experienced (nor probably will) what the clients I worked with have faced but I sure as hell could appreciate their experiences and understand how it shaped them. I try to apply that in other areas of my life. The "Dig This Art" exhibit would be a prime example.

	11:11am Susan: I can be moved by a religious painting even though I'm not a believer. I can (unfortunately) all too well understand the concept of struggle. I took an undergrad class with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and his position was that as long as race is the sole criterion, art of the 'other' will always be just that - the 'other.'

In doing so, he makes up his own version of art history. It's a Fox News kinda thing.

	11:40am Camille: Ken Johnson's comments were ridiculous, really...I think it speaks to, not only his own racist issues, but the decline of quality in or depth in the NYT. Johnson also made some insinuating remarks regarding the show "The Female Gaze: Women Artists Making Their World"...worth some scrutiny as well. He shouldn't be the voice for the NYT if the publication wants to keep its dignity in an arts dialogue.

	10:03am Cecile: I read the review, what was scandalous about it. he's not as versed in art history as he thinks - I believe that Southerners black and white made junk sculptures long before there was a Kurt Schwitters. And I can see some people being threatened by solidarity - women artists get this all the time. At least he was honest about it. I felt it was an honest statement.

	10:15am Susan: What about African spirit figures? Collage or assemblage, yes, those are Modernist art forms associated with specific white artists, but combining materials to make sculptural form is certainly a huge component of a much older African culture.

I'm no art historian but I bet in a matter of minutes I can find examples of assemblage that pre-date the artists who "invented" it. Then the rest of the article completely went to hell. 	10:30am Patrick: great! about the Ken Johnson piece, what an ignorant asshole! while the likes of Picasso and Rauschenberg may have brought the art of assemblage to the forefront there is a century long tradition of assemblage in the African American artistic community. perhaps Ken Johnson has never seen a quilt or heard any improvised free jazz. if anything assemblage is so deeply rooted in the African American artistic tradition that it pre dates picasso buy 100+ years.

A young lady next to me said "He sounds like Minister Farrakhan! he is hateful!" some people get to complain, and others don't in a lot of minds.

	10:47am Patrick: his use of the term beauty at the end of the piece is telling. in essence it seems like what he is doing is dividing the show into two camps, the work that he thinks has an element of beauty and the work that he struggles to understand, and instead of delving deeper and trying to make sense of the work that is difficult he is writing it off by saying at its core he cant understand it because it is not part of his tradition. thats really worrisome for a critic to say. isn't art supposed to be challenging and not reveal its self all at once?

	10:54am Susan: I was teaching an art history class at Baruch in the mid-90s & my peer reviewer was astonished that I discussed African art from a formal perspective. Of course, I taught the religious art of Europe from a formal perspective, too, but that's not shocking. There's this weird way of thinking that non-European art is all about use value or content rather than form. By extrapolation, African-American artists must be message senders rather than form makers or they're sell-outs. Goodness, what a really played-out argument...

	11:03am tim from champaign: I'm a huge believer in using empathy to create understanding between unique shared experiences that may not be my own. I used to be a social worker. I never experienced (nor probably will) what the clients I worked with have faced but I sure as hell could appreciate their experiences and understand how it shaped them. I try to apply that in other areas of my life. The "Dig This Art" exhibit would be a prime example.

I took an undergrad class with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and his position was that as long as race is the sole criterion, art of the 'other' will always be just that - the 'other.'

	11:40am Camille: Ken Johnson's comments were ridiculous, really...I think it speaks to, not only his own racist issues, but the decline of quality in or depth in the NYT. Johnson also made some insinuating remarks regarding the show "The Female Gaze: Women Artists Making Their World"...worth some scrutiny as well. He shouldn't be the voice for the NYT if the publication wants to keep its dignity in an arts dialogue.
