Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from December 4, 2012 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Listener comments!

  3:08pm
Dan B:

BOOM! Two bangers out of two.
  3:11pm
EAL:

OUT OF THE GATES PEDAL TO THE METAL AAAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
  3:17pm
Rödwolf:

Bon! Killer.
  3:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

Bill Murray! Soon-to-be FDR!

Hi BT! Hi everyone!
  3:22pm
SteveL:

Divorce: Perfect for work. Turn it up and no one comes close to my office.
  3:23pm
Dan B:

I didn't like this Divorce record on first listen but it's really grown on me a lot.
  3:26pm
ChrisB.:

I don't think I've heard this song since 1968. Sorta Kinks, right?
  3:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

The instrumentation sounds Kinksy, more so than the vocal.
  3:30pm
amEdeo:

Keep forgetting about that Divorce record. Was initially suspicious of a song called "Bill Murray" but have (thankfully) since then seen the error in my brainways. And ohh, how erroneous they were. Very good record.
  3:31pm
Chris from DC:

From the videos people have been posting, Crazy Horse must have been incredible.
  3:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

Quite an expressionistic work! Kudos to the great 4AD label for issuing this!
(And no, Archive listeners, Scott Walker has not gone 80s/90s ethereal! ;)
  3:37pm
Sigurdur:

hi there, two guys from Iceland listening in trippy stuff.
  3:39pm
Ike:

I respectfully submit my opinion that this Scott Walker track is utterly excruciating. I'm curious to see how long I can continue listening before I lose what little of a mind I have.
  3:39pm
Dan B:

Total sell-out Scott Walker, he's gone soft in his old age to please the Kokomo crowd
  3:39pm
Josh:

Look forward to the Knitting Factory recording!
Also, this Scott Walker album is fucking spooky!
  3:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

I'm not sure if Scott's ever done something this edgy before--if so I'd like to hear!
  3:43pm
krius ornj:

you have listeners from Kosovo...
Avatar 3:44pm
BT:

Heya Kosovo! Not Kokomo
  3:45pm
carbonjoetunis:

i like Ike
  3:46pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I think we'd be fine with either Mike or Ike
  3:46pm
Josh:

This is a great follow up to The Drift.
  3:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

Scott got by on pop music in the 60s because he was waiting for the world to be ready for *this*! Andy Warhol was even freaked by this at the time...

It is drawing the international fans! Welcome Iceland, and Kosovo!
  3:48pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm dying. I'm momentarily constrained from having the sound on here at work.
  3:49pm
common:

powerful record!
  3:49pm
Andrew Waterloo:

After hearing Scott Walker, referring to anything else as strange feels like hyperbole.
  3:50pm
Uncle Michael:

Matt, I like music from all of Scott's career...literally all of it. For me there was never a time whe he was limited to making music the world was ready for. My favorite Scott album...one of my favorite albums of all time is Scott 4.
  3:50pm
Josh:

Toronto, Canada here too.
  3:51pm
Dubinator:

Damn! Stepped out to Pret Mangler for some eats and I missed Tank! Grrrrrrr!
  3:51pm
tim from champaign:

I'm glad Rick Rubin didn't get his hands on Scott Walker.
Avatar 3:52pm
BT:

Me and Noiser will def rock some Tank next week methinks Doob.
  3:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

Amen, tim!!
@UM: Thanks for the rec, not familiar with that '69 album but I'll be sure to look into it.
  3:53pm
Andrew Waterloo:

that was a great transition
  3:53pm
Uncle Michael:

"Is he still cute??" Lulu from the "30 Century Man" documentary, referring to Scott Walker.
  3:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

I remember this one! The Yoko doppelsinger.
  3:54pm
Carmichael:

Hiya BT. Just in time to miss Scott Walker, dangit. But I'm all ears for the rest of the afternoon.
  3:56pm
Uncle Michael:

@Matt, It's worth listening, chronologically, to everything Scott recorded from the time he discovers Jacques Brel. But don't dismiss the Walker Brothers or even the teen stuff he recorded before the WBs.
  3:56pm
northguineahills:

Every time I hear that Cutler song, I have to imagine it was penned before Thatcher.
  3:58pm
northguineahills:

I actually liked that Scott Walker, I usually can't get into him. Must be his range of producers and musicians he uses now.... or something.
  4:00pm
Josh:

The Walker Brothers Nite Flights album from '78 is worth listening to as well.
  4:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

I like the Walker Bros stuff too. But even before then--that's a good chrono listen I should assemble. Twould be interesting indeed!
  4:03pm
kata:

howdy people !! I like this sweet simple O Paon piece. I believe she's a Vancouver BC woman.. pacific NW sweetness...
  4:04pm
Uncle Michael:

@Josh, the four(?) Scott tracks on Nite Flights point in the direction he has pursued since.
  4:05pm
northguineahills:

I concur w/ kata....
  4:06pm
andymorphic:

play more of the scott walker....i missed the track :(
  4:07pm
Carmichael:

I too love Mr. Walker, as a brother and solo. My Ship is Coming In is one of the great wall of sound songs of the 60s. And Scott 4 is the best of the solo bunch, though I like them all.
  4:09pm
Uncle Michael:

@Carmichael...kindred spirit. Though I might pick "After The Lights Go Out" as my favorite WB tune.
  4:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

Proto-doom Obscuro-thrash! EXCELLENT!
*headbangs, air guitars*
  4:17pm
paul:

i saw MWH opening for Devo last year in Toronto. the singer was definitely wearing a hat.
  4:18pm
Beerbully:

Groovy!
  4:18pm
BSI:

HOLY BOUNCING LIVERBUGS, I haven't heard this Men Without Hats tune since the album was new... My head a-splode.
  4:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

Reminds me of Modern English, similar production.
@paul: What kind of hat!
  4:20pm
Carmichael:

I saw Devo open for Blondie last month. They were ALL wearing hats (energy domes, specifically).
  4:20pm
Dan B:

This is brilliant BT, new wave VDGG eh?
  4:21pm
Josh:

If interested in SW definitely check out his documentary "30 Century Man"
  4:21pm
Martha:

Away was the drummer on their Sideways lp. btw - early 1990s I believe -
  4:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: Energy domes work well! Devo's been around a lot lately.
@Josh: UM also mentioned that, sounds pretty good.
  4:22pm
Chris from DC:

Wow, yeah, you can hear the resemblance to MWH there, kinda.
  4:23pm
paul:

i think he was wearing a cowboy hat actually
  4:25pm
Carmichael:

I saw 30 Century Man via Netflix online. It's available in other places, too (Blockbuster, etc ...).
  4:25pm
BSI:

He was quite the decent chap at the VdGG show here in DC. Great show as well.
Avatar 4:25pm
BT:

Me and my friend Andy actually lost our hats at the show but we found them next day
  4:26pm
Mike East:

30 Century Man is totally worth checking out. It took me a while to get to, but I'm glad I did. That Peter Hammill track was awesome, btw
Avatar 4:27pm
BT:

Director of 30th Century Man, Steven Kijak was actually here on the show some years ago, check the archive for some good Scott stories...
  4:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

@paul: That's quite "flaunting" his violation of the band name! ;)
  4:28pm
