Holla, holland oats!
  9:02am ndbob:

foggy and low 20s here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am Doug Schulkind:

Brian from UK — sounds like some caveman when pronounced "Brian from Uck"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Doug Schulkind:

That's almost tropical for you, ndbob?
  9:03am Van in DC:

You mean this show is done LIVE? Who knew? ;) HI Doug and everyone! Happy Friday!
  9:03am Jack:

Howdy everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am Doug Schulkind:

Nice to yak w/you, Jack!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

Fishing for bass or pumping up the bass, dcp@?
  9:10am ndbob:

Not bad Doug, but I'd rather have zero and clear skies
  9:11am Brian in UK:

Doug, it is yuck here, pouring & dullsville. Just bought the Christmas tree.
Is Ben in?
  9:11am Uncle Michael:

Good morning drumheads.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Doug Schulkind:

We go get the tree this afternoon. Hope the menorah doesn't catch it on fire.

@Brian in UK
Who is Ben again?
  9:15am Uncle Michael:

I've Ben there and back again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for getting up early, Uncle Michael. (I bet you never even went to bed.)
  9:20am Uncle Michael:

I've made and served the coffee..let the cat out and back in and fed him. Had my breakfast and was just finishing my stationary bike as the show began, and got the first load of the linens going in the washing machine. Worked out to the cool shit streaming during the preceding half hour. (I bet you're still picking out music for today's show.)
  9:23am dcp@:

I think it's safe to say I haven't caught a bass in 35 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Doug Schulkind:

I've got a pile of records ready to topple and crush me, Uncle Michael. Be ready to take over...
  9:25am Uncle Michael:

After your show, It's the used record store, the Mexican buffet, the toy store and then to-go from a salad bar for dinner tonight. When I get home from those errands I'll get the clean linens back on the bed, vacuum and get next week's Emergency Broadcast System show uploaded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

@dcp@
As long as its not one of those fretless Chapman Sticks. I hate those things. There usta be a guy busking with one in the Carroll Street F train station in Brooklyn. I was like, Dude, STOP playing if you want money.
  9:26am Uncle Michael:

Doug, I'm ready to lend a hand any time you need me.
  9:27am Uncle Michael:

I can stand Tony Levin playing one but that's about it. I have a bass mounted on my bedroom wall. True story. It's an Ibanez.
  9:27am ndbob:

I actually caught a bass the first summer I lived here - a friend decided to take me fishing - did throw it back though
  9:28am Jack:

Smallmouth, largemouth or striped? Bass that is...
  9:28am PGH 99:

The best show to have on while making Perohy!
  9:29am Van in DC:

Loved Tony Levin working with Gabriel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Doug Schulkind:

I hope they're meatless, PGH 99. My daughter's a vegematarian.
  9:29am Uncle Michael:

Perohy is "meat pie" in which language?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Doug Schulkind:

Van! Van!
  9:33am Van in DC:

Kiwi fruit & peaches for breakfast. Goes nicely with this :)
  9:33am PGH 99:

I knew perohy as Ukrainian. Mine are potato mushroom today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Doug Schulkind:

OK, PGH 99. I'll put on a long one and be right over. (I imagine you're not too far from Squirrel Hill?)
  9:35am Uncle Michael:

@Van I saw Levin with Gabriel in '82 and recently found am audience-shot clip of that show on Youtube.

@PGH som variation on that name in most eastern european languages Perogie, Bierock...
  9:37am Uncle Michael:

I like Tony with Crimson, still.

@Doug, if you put "Come Out" by Steve Reich on, I could take a shower.
  9:37am PGH 99:

Might need an endless loop, I'm in Coraopolis
  9:39am Uncle Michael:

Whatever you do...don't mention "ground loop"...or Niagara Falls...or "the war."
  9:42am dcp@:

I agree on the fretless bass -- ick. But on the fishy version, I use to stand in the middle of a creek and fish for 'em in Mechanicsburg, PA, 3 hours due East of you.
  9:42am Van in DC:

Okay I have been debating. The Hobbit in plain old Real3D or in the new "High Frame Rate" Digital 3D "experimental" format championed by Peter Jackson & James Cameron. Think I'll try the HFR version tomorrow :)
  9:44am Uncle Michael:

I'm having it performed in my living room.
  9:47am tr;sh:

Good morning. I'm sick of xmas music already,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

@tr;sh
This is an Xmas music-free zone. This week, at least.

@PGH 99
My mother-in-law is in assisted living in Avalon. Is that out by you? I still don't know Western PA very well.

@Uncle Michael
"Come Out" is always welcome on this show. Heartbreakingly groovy.
  9:50am Van in DC:

I don't know about *this* Dizzy, but I did see Dizzy Gillespie's trumpet this week at the Smithsonian American History museum :)

  9:51am still b/p:

Very enjoyable season's beatings in that last talk-over track. And if African sets are showin' up early in the show...I'll need to wear some kind of ankle Taser alarm to tune in ON TIME.
  9:53am PGH 99:

Across the Ohio riv and down stream 5 miles
  9:54am Hugo:

Yamashita!
  9:55am Uncle Michael:

@Doug, I only know "Come Out" thanks to Google. Plagued me for years. The kid that ran sound for the 1975 production of "Our Town" set up his quad system in the corners of the room where we performed the play in the round. One day after rehearsal...he played the quad version of "Come Out," where the time shifting is swirling around four corners and not two channels. It got completely lodged in my head from one listen and it was decades before I could figure out what the hell it was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Doug Schulkind:

You caught me, still b/p. I usually save the African sequence for later in the show. Gotta keep you people honest!

Van, last time I saw that trumpet live was at Wolf Trap in about 1979.

@PGH 99
I can just hop in the Mon and float my way down!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

This monstrously great Yosuke Yamashita record is downloadable here:

bit.ly...
  9:57am tr;sh:

Ahh. Thank you, Doug.

12 days of xmas is pushing it. Even xmas-aged kids get exhausted by that lousy carol's redundancy.

This music sounds great.
  9:58am PGH 99:

Bring a rope, you need to go through 1 river lock
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Doug Schulkind:

Calling this the Yosuke Yamashita TRIO is a bit misleading. There is a 12-piece brass section joining in the fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Doug Schulkind:

So what do you say, folks? Will the ancient Mayans let us convene for another show next Friday? (I need to know whether I should prepare a show for 12/21.)
  10:03am Uncle Michael:

I'd definitely have a 'Plan B.'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Doug Schulkind:

Not sure I've ever played a Chick Corea record on this show. He was playing piano on a Pete LaRoca track a few weeks back, but this is his own album.

And it's a great record, available via my latest Mining the Audio Motherlode post:

bit.ly...
  10:08am Brian in UK:

Did Stanley Clarke play fretless?
  10:10am still b/p:

With all the musicians aboard here, someone can write a "We Welcome the 14th Baktun!" song for us to enjoy post-doomdud day, yes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

There was a period of about three weeks when I was 15 when I was obsessed with Stanley Clarke's "School Days." (Have to say, glad I grew out of that phase.)
  10:11am Brian in UK:

The Kinks sang 'Don't You Fret'. Old Mose Nose.
  10:12am Uncle Michael:

My favorite pop bass line of all time is played on a fretless. It's Richard Evans' line on Gene Chandler's "Groovy Situation."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Doug Schulkind:

I've always loved the title Chick Corea gave to the album he recorded after this one: "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs"

Wow.
  10:14am Brian in UK:

Well Return to Forever is not a bad 'un.
  10:20am duke:

I'm gonna get this Chick Corea album
  10:21am Uncle Michael:

moi aussi
  10:22am Cheri Pi:

Good morning peeps! Hey-does anyone have any tips for record shopping in Italy? My friend is going to the northern region for one month.
  10:23am duke:

Scary background images on that blog with the Corea album!
  10:24am Van in DC:

black widow?
  10:24am Uncle Michael:

@Doug, can your schpeeler core a apple?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Doug Schulkind:

@Van
No, not a Black Widow. It's called a Red Back:

bit.ly...
  10:27am Van in DC:

Oooh. Looks menacing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Doug Schulkind:

@Van
I just read the Redback Wikipedia page. Apparently the little bastards ARE related to the widows spiders.
  10:29am Brian in UK:

Koobah in the Thirties? Peerless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

@Cheri Pi
I haven't record shopped in Italy since 2006. I remember there were some record stores across the Arno in Florence.
  10:37am Uncle Michael:

The Tromboning Nun!
  10:41am still b/p:

I was going to say something about redbackarachnophobia...and thought it was funny that it looked/sounded close to Bacharachnophobia...checked the intertubies and, sure enough, found this in a thread somewhere:

"Burt Bacharachnophobia: the unreasonable fear that spiders will keep fallin' on my head..."
  10:43am Uncle Michael:

Do you know the way to the emergency room?
  10:44am Hugo:

For those who would like a genuine Yamashita Trio record, without the extras, it can be found here:

http://bit.ly/TSgEw9

with functioning links, too ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

@still b/p
Hysterical, but still terrifying.

@Uncle Michael
Practice?

@Hugo
Oh yeah, that's a great one. Have it RIGHT here, thanks to the mighty Kinabalu!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

I keep drumming on my desk, causing my wireless mouse to lose its connection. I'm a menace.
  10:48am Cheri Pi:

Thanks DS- I'll google earth that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

@Cheri Pi
Record shopping in Florence:

  10:56am Hugo:

@Doug: How about a Legendary Jay Miller Sessions set? Just askin'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

@Hugo
I don't know. You think there's enough material out there? (cough, cough)
  10:59am ndbob:

Yep - there could be a hundred or more of those - and all good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Doug Schulkind:

Actually, Hugo, I have a bit of discomfort giving much love to Jay Miller. No doubt he recorded and released a ton of vital music, but his unabashed production of unrepentant and viciously racist music in his studio gives me pause. I am happy to play the great artists he happened to put down on vinyl, but I am not particularly eager to highlight Jay Miller's role.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

If this next song by the Dutch band NV Groep 65 doesn't give you a contact high, you should call a doctor.
  11:06am Brian in UK:

Jefferson Airplane?
  11:06am Hugo:

With that disclaimer, I think there is still room (cough cough) even for a Tuesday special. Highlight the music, not the man!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Doug Schulkind:

Can't argue with that, Hugo. It's a date next Tuesday!
  11:10am ndbob:

@Doug true but many behaved wretchedly and recorded good music - there can be both an acknowledgment of their great contributions with a caveat about their wretched behavior - Huey Meaux, Phil Spector and Ike Turner, among others,come to mind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Doug Schulkind:

All true, ndbob, but some of the vile, hateful shit that came out of Jay Miller's studio is hard to overlook.
  11:13am Carmichael:

Do I have the right stream? Andrzej rocks! Good morning, Doug and listeners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

Time to dip the other toe in, Carmichael!
  11:22am Uncle Michael:

My Internet connection has the hiccups, suddenly.
  11:24am ndbob:

morning Carmichael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

Anyone else having connection issues?
  11:25am Carmichael:

Woke up to a near-freeze here in NorCal! Maybe I should re-consider the whole Mayan thing ...
  11:26am Paul Sherratt:

A 'don't brew a coffee ' warning should have been broadcast before this set. Too late now !
  11:26am Uncle Michael:

It's at my end, Doug.
  11:27am Carmichael:

Are these guys channeling Samuel Beckett? An enlightened soul group!
  11:29am Carmichael:

Speaking of cold, morning Bob!
  11:33am ndbob:

@Doug different forms of gun control are appropriate for different areas - almost everyone I know here owns a firearm - and there is very little violent crime in ND
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Doug Schulkind:

@ndbob
The paucity of violent crime in ND has virtually nothing to do with the plethora of firearms, I reckon.
  11:42am kat330:

Hey, all! Wasn't going to jump in today, but was prompted here:
@ndbob: I'd be very surprised if statistics show that domestic violence involving guns is lower wherever guns are more plentiful. Especially in the north where "cabin fever" is a factor. Probably those keeping the statistics in ND don't bother to classify domestic disputes/deaths as true "violence," which is another problem altogether.
  11:42am ndbob:

@Doug nope - no causal connection - just saying that having lots of available firearms doesn't necessarily lead to lots of violent crime
  11:43am Uncle Michael:

Hey there Kat.
  11:45am ndbob:

heya kat! - actually most of the violent deaths here are related to domestic violence - I certainly favor stronger gun control - just saying that conditions vary from place to place
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Doug Schulkind:

@kat330
Always happy to see you!

@ndbob
I think smart, sensible gun control can be legislated in a manner such that it won't keep guns from the ownership of reasonable, responsible people. But the insane, irrational people won't permit even a whisper of discussion.
  11:46am ndbob:

true Doug - there's no rational basis for not banning assault weapons for example
  11:47am kat330:

Hi, UM and a now proper, polite "Yo!" to you Bob. Doug, aussi!

It's the sensational acts of violence that get all the press, but women and children are especially vulnerable in domestic situations where there's a gun in the home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Crappy mp3 here of Emily Bishop. What'r you gonna do?
  11:49am Uncle Michael:

It's the music, not the precious artifact. Hearing it is always better than not hearing it.
  11:51am kat330:

On a lighter note, to an early list comment: Hey, Van, I also enoyed kiwi and peaches this morning! Mine was in the form of pieces of kiwi in a fruit salad tossed with peach yogurt as a waffle topping. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Doug Schulkind:

Yeah, UM, that's pretty much always my rationale. I find agitatin' over audio quality to be tedious.
  11:53am ndbob:

I had eggs as usual - scrambled with pepper jack cheese - usually I go out to breakfast, but on Fridays I stay here to hear Doug live
  11:54am Cheri Pi:

YES!!!!!!!!! nice segue
  11:57am kat330:

@Bob: Eggs are Wednesday and Saturday in the kat/Philo household. Yes, we're slaves to routine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Doug Schulkind:

@kat330
I appreciate your lighter note. Well timed, Madam!

@Cheri Pi
About to get nicer still!
  11:58am kat330:

And by way of explanation on sensitivity to domestic violence, I'm involved with the Center for Women & Families program locally, shelters for women fleeing abusive situations, etc.
  11:59am ndbob:

trees here are coated in ice due to freezing fog - pretty common around here -roads look ok tho
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Doug Schulkind:

Catherine Irwin's voice sounds like the cracked paint on an old barn.
  12:00pm ndbob:

Understood kat - I've certainly seen the results of abusive situations
  12:00pm Uncle Michael:

Terrific show, Doug. Thank you.
  12:00pm kat330:

Thanks, Doug! Phone's ringing (Phio) -- have a good one all!
  12:01pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm Doug Schulkind:

From kiwi and peaches to frozen fog — it's been a wonderful three hours. Thanks for hanging with me!
  12:02pm Uncle Michael:

  12:03pm duke:
