At the suggestion of Listener Hugo from Norway, tonight's program features blues, cajun, zydeco, swamp pop and rock 'n' roll recorded by J.D. Miller at his famous studio in Crowley, Louisiana. Thanks Hugo.
  5:58pm Matt from Springfield:

Swamp us with it, this holiday season!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Wampum with the swampum!
  6:00pm ndbob:

evening Doug, Matt, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Doug Schulkind:

Hiya ndbob!
  6:01pm Matt from Springfield:

Hi Doug, NDBob! Merry Tuesday!
  6:02pm Hugo:

All ears over here at midnight
  6:03pm listener james from westwood:

do we not hear the ears at midnight?
wait, that's not how it goes....
good drummer's tuesday, folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm Doug Schulkind:

Everyone — blame Hugo!
  6:03pm ?:

Hi Hugo!
  6:04pm Matt from Springfield:

Merry Wednesday to you, Hugo! Thanks for the theme suggestion!
Hi LJFW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Doug Schulkind:

Good not so late night to you, Listener James from Westwood.
  6:05pm Matt from Springfield:

Lefty Frizzell -- I know of and like him!
  6:05pm ?:

and hello James!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Doug Schulkind:

Lefty Frizzell, "the boy with the wave in his hair and the curl in his voice."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Doug Schulkind:

@Hugo,
Maybe I'll just stay on for three hours to keep you up till 3am!
  6:08pm Matt from Springfield:

Everyone needs a description like that.
  6:08pm listener james from westwood:

give the sandman some (coffee)
  6:08pm ndbob:

My favorite Lefty record is his teener "Heaven's Plan"
  6:08pm Hugo:

Ain't no problem for a midnight rambler!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Doug Schulkind:

Only one hen was harmed during the making of this broadcast.
  6:11pm Matt from Springfield:

@LJFW: The occupational hazards of being a sandman! What if they inhale their own sand while working and fall asleep?
  6:12pm listener james from westwood:

never get high on your own supply!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Doug Schulkind:

He who dealt it smelt it?
  6:14pm listener james from westwood:

ooh, bluesy zydeco! c'est bon!
  6:14pm Matt from Springfield:

YES to the gee-tarin' on "Cold Chills"! And an upcoming YES to the accordion on "Goodbye Baby"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Doug Schulkind:

Here is the track listing for all fifty-seven volumes of Flyright's amazing "Legendary Jay Miller Sessions" records:

bit.ly...
  6:17pm Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: This 'Ouisi-ana theme reminded me: a set of old Cajun folk you played recently had the "LSU French Waltz". Did Louisiana State U have an official French song, or do you think that was that just a title the band called it?
  6:20pm listener james from westwood:

that track listing is one impressive stack 'o wax.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Doug Schulkind:

@Matt from Springfield
Not sure. I doubt that Nathan Abshire's LSU French Waltz had any official connection to LSU. Of course, EVERYTHING in Baton Rouge, and pretty much all of the southwestern Louisiana prairie country is completely connected to LSU in one way or another. (Most residents of Cajun Country could surely never afford to go there...)
  6:23pm ndbob:

@Doug Have you listened to all of them? I'm far from being done
  6:25pm Matt from Springfield:

Ha ha, "No bread, no meat"!

Thanks Doug, and that's a mighty comprehensive tracklist as well! Archivist's Dream!
  6:26pm Matt from Springfield:

"No dough, no oven"
"No pearls, no oyster"...
  6:26pm northguineahills:

Oh, forgot to say 'allo!
  6:28pm Matt from Springfield:

Phil Chenier "is presently a television sports broadcaster for the NBA's Washington Wizards." Ooof, that's got to be hard nowadays!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Chenier
  6:28pm Matt from Springfield:

'Allo 'allo, NGH!
  6:29pm listener james from westwood:

one of the things i plan to do during next week's time off is hit my favorite tex-mex/cajun joint. this is only impelling me to move that visit to this week! yum yum!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm Doug Schulkind:

@Matt
OMG, he is broadcasting for the Wizards? Painful. How i loved to watch him play.
  6:32pm Matt from Springfield:

There's an unusual Thai-Cajun fusion place near me; not purist Thai cuisine by any means, but what delicious *comfort* food it makes! They make pad thai with BREADED shrimp, and CRAWFISH! And a CRAB fried rice that's out of this world!
  6:33pm Hugo:

Just did a quick count of what I got - 46 in all. So that much should still be available - hopefully.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Doug Schulkind:

And I forgot to say bon soir, to you, NGH!
  6:34pm listener james from westwood:

i could see that crab fried rice being nice.
i don't get to the thai joint 1 town over from me as often as i should. i keep steering into the greek joint on the way. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Doug Schulkind:

Hugo, some of the links I sent you are now dead. So revise that number down. Sadly.
  6:35pm Matt from Springfield:

Speaking of M. Nathan Abshire...
  6:36pm Hugo:

What's playing now - Nathan Abshire - is the only one I have on record, vol. 13. Priceless!
  6:37pm Matt from Springfield:

@LJFW: Greek (and all Med) food is a particular weakness of mine as well, and a concentration of Greek restaurants. Fortunately there are enough Thai places in a straight line here!
  6:38pm ndbob:

sounds great Matt!
  6:40pm Artie:

Good Times!
  6:40pm Hugo:

What got me started was picking up some 20+ records of cajun and tex-mex at a local record fair, one of which was the above vol. 13. So I thought there must be more, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Doug Schulkind:

Now that you're here, Artie...
  6:41pm Artie:

Don't be no poulet!
  6:41pm listener james from westwood:

one of the mopiest, under-a-perpetual-cloud men i ever met was a guy whose last name was bontemps. a walking exercise in naming irony.
  6:42pm Hugo:

Thai - Cajun fusion ??? Intriguing ...
  6:45pm Matt from Springfield:

Ironic name indeed!

@Hugo: Not that it's common, I think it's just that restaurant combining, but it's a winning combo of flavors and textures.
  6:46pm ndbob:

There's at least one Trahan rockabilly record
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Doug Schulkind:

There are quite a few "legitimate" (non racist) Trahan records. I refuse to play 'em. One of the compilations I'm playing tonight has Trahan on it and it makes me queasy even thought I'm not playing him.
  6:53pm Matt from Springfield:

The producer of Johnny Rebel? I HAVE heard of this guy before, this sounds familiar: "He professed to enjoy African-American blues music more than any other musical genre, and he even penned blues songs under the pseudonym "Jay West" (a name he used to disguise his race)." So many racists profess a liking of black forms of music, what a shame that social environments lead people to like music and scoff at the very culture that created it.

That is OUTSTANDING, Hugo! Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Doug Schulkind:

Now what the hell do you think the "drummer" is using as a percussion instrument here?
  6:58pm ndbob:

Hmm can't tell
  6:58pm listener james from westwood:

bundle of celery.
  6:59pm northguineahills:

Later Doug!
  6:59pm listener james from westwood:

the celery, she make good mirepoix after the session, hear?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Doug Schulkind:

@LJFW
Best guess wins!
  7:00pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
  7:01pm Hugo:

beautifun!
  7:01pm Matt from Springfield:

A bon temps is guaranteed for all!

Thanks Doug, have a good night everyone! May you all have plenty of celery over the holidays!
  8:48am Van in DC:

Well now. Lookie lookie, a show I somehow missed. Goodie goodie! Let's go!
  8:52am Doug Schulkind:

Lemme know you're favorite cut, Van. For my money (what money?) you don't get any better than Nathan Abshire. And Clarence Garlow. And Clifton Chenier. And Guitar Gable. And...

Oh forget it.
  9:57am Van in DC:

Yep, you covered it! :)
