Sitting by the window, in the sun, listening to your show and you sir, are nailing it. Thanks for your efforts.

I hear your lament re: today's pop music. But there are lots and many of people making real music everywhere still. God bless.

Michael Shelley:

ABSOLUTELY - but there really is no large scale "indie" R&B scene - that's what I miss most

here is another mashup that improves both originals:

nickinitaly:

the problem is in the past all music was good and accessible.
Now, in the info age,all accessible music is crap, and the good stuff you have to dig for. this is your responsibility as the good dj you are.

mashmat:

indie r&b i get it now, thanks for your reply.

Real Don Steele had a "Bandstand" type dance show for a while in the 70's and some clips still exist.

Haven't heard the Real Don Steele mentioned in years. East coaster that I am, I've only heard of him, never listened to him.
  12:00pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Ah John Rydgren--what pipes on that guy!
Avatar 12:02pm
Philo Gristle:

I knew of Real Don Steele from the great Corman and Joe Dante movies he was in, like Rock'n'Roll High School and especially Death Race 2000. Only later did I come across some airchecks. Rockin' Ricky Rialto in Gremlins, too!
  12:02pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Parq--as a transplanted east coaster I can tell you Real Don Steele was just as good as all our heroes (except maybe a shade behind Dan Ingram who was so innately suited for that gig that he stood head and shoulders above everyone else). He was on the air till just before he died and he always sounded exciting and excited

Aces. Michael. I hate to sound like an old guy, but what are today's kids going to reminisce about? "Wow, remember the computer-generated weather report that Clearchannel put on its midwest stations? That was so cool!"

Michael Shelley:

Ingram = my all time favorite

Mike East:

watched some of the louis prima special on pbs on nye
  12:12pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Talk about drumming! I think that's Bobby Morris with Louis Prima--amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
Parq:

Ingram was THE greatest, no argument from me. Half of what I know about puns (and my daughter will confirm that I know way too much) I learned from Dan I.
  12:17pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Sorry--my mistake--Jimmy Vincent was the amazing drummer on that Louis Prima track. What a player!
  12:19pm
Brian:

Seconds on the Rose Royce song: now I want to watch Car Wash.

The Petty studio in Clovis appears to be preserved and tourable although their web site is defunct.

My wife loves when I play Prince Buster's version of this.
  12:30pm
Connie T. Empress:

Bob Shannon was called The Prince of Puns and he referred to Dan's words as "Ingramisms": Dan always the first and best
Avatar 12:31pm
Michael Shelley:

Both Bob & Dan can be so subtle & clever - that sometimes I don't figure out the joke till hours after hearing it. I love that.
  12:32pm
fred:

Beaties! RIP MCA, you're missed so much
  12:32pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Sam I Am--Vincent was the regular drummer in the Witnesses during this period so it's my assumption that he played on this. There is some Youtube footage of him which I watched a long time ago--a terrific player and an even better showman
  12:32pm
Gaylord Fields:

Did you say ther's a copy of "The Ten Commandments of Man" on eBay? I'll ask my wife if I can bid on it.
  12:33pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Bob Shannon is in ill health as we speak--it's why he stopped broadcasting

there's another for $24.95
  12:37pm
Connie T. Empress:

Dang Gaylord: I will dig out my extra copy: Can't have too many! 20 Commandments!
  12:38pm
Gaylord Fields:

I own two copies of tne Prince Buster original, as well as the Princess Buster rebuttal (as per the Fairness Doctrine).

here's the link that works for Norman Petty Studios

and hi Michael and all
  12:41pm
Brian:

I doubt Arkansas pre-dates Kansas City, which is derived from Bennie Moten's "Goofy Dust," 1924.
  12:41pm
Gaylord Fields:

Thanks for giving me cover to own it, Connie. It's not the most "comfortable" record in my collection, to put it mildly.
  12:42pm
Bob:

Chuck Berry pretty much gets it right.
  12:46pm
Gaylord Fields:

Ingram is the gold standard. The unheralded Dick Heatherton rates almost as highly. His return during WCBS-FM's short-lived Radio Legends series was revelatory.
  12:50pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

Gaylord--last time I was in Vegas Dick Heatherton was on there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm
Parq:

Sorry, I didn't realize this was still an open question. Arkansas became a state on June 15, 1836. Kansas City Mo was founded on February 22, 1853. You can thank me later.
  12:55pm
Gaylord Fields:

Thanks for the tip, MftLC! Maybe there's a stream!
  12:57pm
Mike East:

great show, Michael!
