Avatar 12:29pm Matt from Springfield:

@kat: To answer my question, Once Upon A Mattress (the Princess and the Pea musical) contained that song, "Shy".

To answer your question, I don't think you'd receive "signals from the Andromeda galaxy wearing those", but there's a good chance of receiving a pirate radio station of "socio-political commentary" from someone calling themself "Andromeda" :)

Avatar 12:37pm Matt from Springfield:

@kat: Sounds great, YLT is always fun to see! Glad you solved another quandry :)

I remember someone submitted this to Dan Bodah for his "Breaking Records" show of playing records then breaking them! They said in the comments that they like this particular song, but sent in their copy to get rid of the odious "cassingle" format!

Kat, sounds pleasingly PG (depending on the offshoulderness, I guess) ;-)
I've some HS pix of me dressed for Rocky Horror - I look like a a newbie tart right off the bus from hicksville. Cannot believe I was allowed out of the house! I give my parents far more credit than I gave them at the time.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Hugo:

Soundtrack to Mon Oncle?
Avatar 12:52pm kat330:

@Holly: HAD to be PG, and not just because I was 19. It was one of those family resorts where NYC escapees come spend a week in fresh air land with their children.
Avatar 12:54pm Matt from Springfield:

@kat: So you were Borscht-belting out songs? ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Uncle Michael:

Ahhh, an orange tabby, Hugo. I'm partial to that feline type.
Avatar 12:55pm Matt from Springfield:

Nice school recording, Charlie! So mellow and washed out...must incorporate into a film soundtrack in some way!
  12:55pm gary mitchell:

  12:56pm Listening Out There:

...great organ in "The Hustle." Anyone think that's a Farfisa?
Avatar 12:56pm kat330:

@Matt: That along with doling out iced tea and coffee. Actually, the owners -- the Shukis' -- were Lithuanian. But I remember no borscht. Just my first Singapore Sling and my first sauna. :)
  12:57pm erella:

I was thinking of a song with a great trumpet solo, Billy Bragg's Saturday Boy. Don't forget Kool and the Gang's Jungle Boogie. Johnny Cash's Ring Of Fire too. Now you have me thinking of other forgotten trumpets.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Ike:

I'm blaming the Ice King for this weather, not Mr. Freeze.
Avatar 12:59pm kat330:

Ohh, and there's the *delicious* trumpet in Costello's "Shipbuilding" -- dreeeeeamy it is!
Avatar 1:01pm Matt from Springfield:

@Ike: I'm partial to Elton John and Kiki Dee's "Snow Queen".
Even though I'm sure it has nothing to do with the weather...

and Hello Ike!
Yes, Michael, that's a trombone, but what the hell, I'm playing a sax number here...
  1:03pm Listening Out There:

...Steven Bernstein plays a good slide trumpet. Only one o' those I've heard..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Parq:

Just back at my desk. Confused. Pretty sure this is a saxophone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Uncle Michael:

Kat, that's Chet Baker on Shipbuilding, I believe...when he would play any date that would cover the cost of a dime bag. Not that it's not great. It was...but at that point in time the answer to "can we get chet baker?" was always yes.
Avatar 1:05pm Holly in NC:

Hugo, love your new addition!

HOOOOOOOOORAYmond Scott!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Hugo:

Wonderful Raymond Scott tune!
  1:08pm frenchee:

oh have I missed the Mangione segment? Please tell me I haven't. Or does he play flugelbugle?
Avatar 1:08pm kat330:

@Holly: Well, I'm certainly no connoisseur of trumpet playing or players, but something about the section where the trumpet sounds like a diver ascending for the surface with bubbles all around -- gives me the goose bumps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Parq:

Gonna make this Scott track my first "favorite".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Uncle Michael:

@Kat It's wonderful. I'm just saying that Elvis was the beneficiary of the fact that Baker was broke and therefore, always available for session work.
Avatar 1:12pm Holly in NC:

I haven't heard or played this Spaceheads song in years! Oh, nice call, Charlie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Ike:

Yay, it's "Joyriding," my favorite WFMU hit of... uh... 1997?
Avatar 1:14pm ndbob:

Hello Uncle Michael!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Uncle Michael:

Hi ndbob
Avatar 1:18pm kat330:

Unfortunately for developing my ear for the trumpet, my older brother played it (badly), so I heard Trumpeters Holiday and El Solo Toro over and over and over and over.... :/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Charlie:

Hi, Frenchee! I should have called the show Fuglebugle...
Hi there Lewis!
Yes, a minor hit, this one.
And hello Jan, nice to see you as always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Uncle Michael:

It would be cool if Kenzo could do something about the three mouse clicks it still takes to get from composing a post, back to viewing the conversation.
Avatar 1:19pm kat330:

Hi, Lewis! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Parq:

Cherry Blossom? The timing on this track is clinical.
  1:21pm Listening Out There:

....OK, another suggestion...Lester Bowie comes to mind...this Diagram Bros. tune sounds a bit like him....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Brian in UK:

Hey Charlie got any Bert Kaempfert in the offing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Charlie:

maybe, Brian,
lotsa good ideas out here!
Avatar 1:25pm Holly in NC:

If Kenzo's lurking, my song favorites keep disappearing!
Also would like to merge the (many, many) song favorites on my mobile with favorites on desktop.
Avatar 1:25pm kat330:

Oh, yes, and Tijuana Taxi, too.
Avatar 1:26pm Matt from Springfield:

@UM: You notice how Wikipedia now reverts back to the main page, with a box appearing over the "Edit" button saying that "Your edit has been saved"? Maybe Kenzo could switch back to the board after you approve on the preview screen, and a "Your comment was posted!" box could appear in the first few secs over the lower right box here.
Avatar 1:26pm ndbob:

ever hear Donna Lynn's vocal version of this - "Java Jones"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Uncle Michael:

If I felt like typing a lot, I'd describe going to see Al Hirt at his club in 1981. But I don't.
Avatar 1:27pm Matt from Springfield:

My Dad said that his parents were really into Al Hirt. Not sure why this Latin-y song is titled after "Java" in Indonesia. Would make a good ironic, upbeat soundtrack item in a "year of the living dangerously" type historical drama set in Indonesia.
  1:28pm Steve:

Would love to hear Don's solo on MacArthur Park with Maynard
Avatar 1:28pm Holly in NC:

I would love to hear some Dog-Faced Hermans &/or some Ex. Not that I'm not enjoying everything you're playing, Charlie!
Avatar 1:28pm Matt from Springfield:

@kat: I love "Tijuana Taxi" and the other TB songs--but that was an expert trumpet, and a fun backing band! Hearing a poor trumpet lead over and over would get real grating real fast!
  1:29pm frenchee:

MfS: I'm pretty sure it's coffee-related--hence the caffeinated, peppy sound!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm Uncle Michael:

@Matt Yes, something like the Wiki behavior.

@Matt I think "java" refers to coffee.
Avatar 1:29pm Holly in NC:

Queen Latifah genius pick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm listener james from westwood:

a british tv show called "vision on" used "java" as its out theme. it was rebroadcast on channel 13 in the early 70s. when i eventually heard the tune again sometime in the 90s, on fmu, i was bowled over. hadn't heard it in decades.
  1:30pm mo:

yo, chazaloo! you're daddy-o and you don't quit!
Avatar 1:30pm kat330:

@Matt: Ironic is right! Really love that film, btw -- most mollusk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm Charlie:

I should consult y'all before I put the show together...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Uncle Michael:

You don't need any help from us, Charlie. The show is great.
Avatar 1:33pm kat330:

@Holly: I was struggling with that unclicking star thingy on Duane's list yesterday. I'm wondering if it isn't mostly an optical illusion? All I know is a track still appeared unclicked when I left the list (after reclicking a bazillion times), but then when I went back a bit later, it was starred.
Avatar 1:33pm Michael:

What the Uncle said.
Avatar 1:34pm Matt from Springfield:

@kat: There was a VHS of that at the Radford U. library, was planning to watch it then when I had all that spare time, but never got to it. It IS somewhere in my Netflix queue, so soon enough I'll finally get that chance! Others have said it is a mollusk movie as well.
Avatar 1:34pm kat330:

What the two Michaels said.
  1:34pm Steve:

Mad props from Crown Heights, yo
Avatar 1:35pm Holly in NC:

What the 2 Michaels & Kat said.
Avatar 1:35pm Matt from Springfield:

@UM: Might make more sense then if he only meant "java" as a term for coffee. But as the song title is capitalized, and I'm a geographer...associations with places will be made! :)
Avatar 1:36pm Matt from Springfield:

What kat330 said, times 2 :)

(Keep this exponential tragectory going!)
Avatar 1:37pm Matt from Springfield:

All right then, what Holly said TIMES what I said! :D
Avatar 1:38pm glenn:

java's an allen toussaint song, and being from new orleans, he probably sucks back a lot of coffee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Uncle Michael:

@Matt...I see the confusion. Song titles are generally capitalized. And you miss the math, don't you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Uncle Michael:

Good thing Allen didn't call it Chicory Jive (what alliterates with chicory?)
Avatar 1:41pm kat330:

@Matt: The Maurice Jarre music, cinematography and art direction all work to immerse the viewer in the culture and the time. Hunt's performance, a revelation.
Avatar 1:41pm Matt from Springfield:

@glenn: And a fresh beignet as well, I'm sure!

@UM: I appreciate the speedier posting without the math like everyone else. But I will also admit that our minds will probably be a little less sharp from here on out because of it.
